This whole album is masterful. Terry Kath is a complete monster.
Ladies and gentlemen...the incredible Terry Kath on guitar!
MISTER Terry Kath 🤪
Amen.
Actually apparently on everything! And it was good!
Early Chicago was a jam band. First couple of albums were the best.
For sure. I stopped listening after that.
Kath playing this glorious and filthy licks and Cetera’s bass work here is insane. “South California Purples” and “Introduction” i recommend it with all my soul.
Also the song Listen has every member in full flight throughout. Hell every song on their first 4 albums are recommended.
Chicago Transit Authority AKA Chicago was a force in their early years. Thank you for this one. I still remember the excitement of dropping the needle on the 1st song and knowing it was a double album left to listen to.
No one could shred a guitar like Terry Kath. He was a beast on those filthy licks. Way ahead of his time. No one could ever come close.
Simply amazing!!! Gone away too soon.
R.I.P. Terry😪
One of the best Chicago jams ever
This whole album is pure gold.
Imagine the balls of a band releasing consecutive double albums a year apart...as debuts!
and 3 times to boot!!!!
Actually I think first three!!
The Carpenters. Puscifer. Incubus. George Carlin. Chicago. Dire Straits. In one night. There is not another more diverse analysis channel anywhere.
Tre Narcisse
Jimi Hendrix said Terry Cath was a better guitarist than himself.
I grew up loving chicago.......you have to listen to ALL of chicago Transit Authority---chicago 1....and Chicago II.......ALL of it.....Terry Kath lead Chicago is one of the greatest music during the 70s.......AND some of the greatest anti war music............You are hitting what the 60s and 70s were.......
I would also recommend Chicago III from 1971.
Terry Kath. Total beast on 6 strings. Watch him live, then watch the young Russian lad duplicate him with ‘Leonid and Friends’
‘Questions 67 and 68’. Chicago is the total package when it comes to perfect music, and ‘Leonid and Friends’ bring it back in the studio with perfection....and they don’t even speak English
Thank you! You should definitely check out “South California Purples” from the same album. You’ll like it!
Also, Listen and Liberation.
Here you go again introducing me to something I've never heard thank you so much for doing what you do
If you want a lyric heavy classic Chicago tune, i highly recommend "Dialogue part I & II". We can make it happen!
After the loss of Terry Kath, Chicago changed gears and created a new genre called "Sappy" Rock.
I bought this album with my lawn mowing money when it first came out. I’ve been a Chicago fan ever since. I get goose bumps even to this day when listening to their music. They are the greatest musically talented band in history. Thanks to modern technology we can listen to them forever. It’s the only band that I have never gotten sick of and had to put aside for a break.
This is from Chicago's debut.
Terry Kath in flight!
I love watching watching young people listen to the music that I started listening to over 50 years ago!! I just browsed through over 160 comments and can't believe that there are not raving reviews of Peter Cetera's bass playing.. As much as Peter has been maligned as having been maligned as the ballad singer who destroyed Chicago, almost no attention is given to the way he played the bass so masterfully in Chicago's early years. Bravo Peter - job well done!!!
Wow....this one's from my era, but somehow never heard it until today. Fantastic!
Nice selection, Daniel..Don't believe I've ever heard this epic Kath- driven vurtuoso performance reacted to on any other channel
My fave Terry Kath-guitar-focused song (tho Robert Lamm wrote it) - thanx SO MUCH for reacting to it! Tbh, the entire debut album is amazing ...
(Btw, don't know if u can change the video title; it is listed as "Poem 85")
This was part of the hard rock, guitar driven sound that morphed into metal for sure.....God,.....this sounds to me so much like a John Paul Jones bass line......
This is from their first album. Terry Kath wrote "Introduction" Side 1 Song 1 From this album. It is a must!!!
Introduction is in my top 10 favorite from Chicago!
Not sure if I know this tune...typing as we go!
Nope, never heard this, but that funk beat is awesome!! What a groove! I am getting the feeling this is an instrumental...3 mins. in. Okay, there ARE words LOL!! But MAN what an opening jam!! This was released in 1969 so metal really hadn't quite come out yet but the beginnings were there. Danny Seraphine on drums was really kickin' it! What a great tune and reaction!!
I didn't know this song. Thank you for your reaction!
Terry Kath!! And Danny Seraphine on drums!!!!! 🙏🙏🙏
I had totally forgotten this song! Yes, this would be proto-metal. It's early metal jam. We called it hard rock.
Wow, what a ride! This is amazing. I just realized something about reaction channels: I'm not necessarily being introduced to YOUR musical tastes, but rather to the musical tastes of your viewers who recommend tracks to you. This was a great choice.
Terry Kath was around until Chicago XI when he passed. May I suggest "It Better End Soon" all 4 movements next off of Chicago II.
Yes. Great recommendation.
“I’ve got to pause it at some po- Oh, God...”
Idk how many vids I've watched where DS9 says, "I've got to pause it at some point," only to realize that That exact moment is Not the point to hit pause.
😃
But this??...
This reaction here has to be the not-pointiest! 😄 👍
Best first album of any band EVER Love how Terry, Cetera and Danny are SO in the pocket.
Im confused as to how i havent heard this? Was i just too stoned to remember? This was awesome. Every once in a while one slips through the cracks of my music radar and im grateful to whoever recommended this !
ZenClover84 this wasn't played on the radio and i grew up in the Chicago area. I heard it because a friend had the album.
@@cesarnarro6013 A lot of the time an artists best songs are the ones that never get played on the radio. This is probably the main reason I stopped listening to mainstream radio years ago.I'm about deep cuts.
@@TRANZEURO when I used to be an interstate driver always had Sirius radio on and there deep cuts station on their rock channels was my go to station followed by the outlaw country station.
Same here...or I've heard it and totally forgot about it, or a performer like Rickie Lee Jones...
@@cesarnarro6013 My favorite go to stations! The Rhythm and Blues channels are quite good as well!
Daniel, you've hit it out of the park once again. I had completely forgotten this song, and haven't heard it probably 50 years. Thank you for what you're doing; you're helping me beat Alzheimer's.
Terry Kath and Frank Zappa were my biggest guitar influences growing up. Chicago's first three albums and Zappa's "Overnite Sensation" and "Apostrophe" albums were my textbooks for developing my guitar playing and singing. There were other influential musicians and bands such as Deep Purple, ZZ Top and Grand Funk Railroad, but Chicago and Zappa were always at the top of the heap for me. I cried bitter tears when Terry Kath died; I was 19 years old at the time. The only other musician whose death actually made me cry was Stevie Ray Vaughan. My first band, back in high school, used to win all the talent shows playing Chicago tunes such as Introduction and In the Country, and over the years we worked up and performed 16 Chicago songs along with all the other bands we covered. The late 1960s through the mid-1970s was the most transformational era of rock music, and the influence of the music at that time can be heard in the sounds of thousands of artists who followed them.
Now that's what you call rock and roll.. this is one of my favorite Chicago songs !
Damn I forgot about this song . Well I have t heard it in 45 years
This is what I would love for you to do. First I would like you to experience the Chicago transit Authority music and soak it all in, and then I would like you to experience that same music from ‘Leonid and Friends’. That would ‘make me smile’😊
Greatest Chicago song
Well, I guess if you like this one, Liberation from the same album would be your next stop. It's a live recording and while not, strictly speaking, a companion piece, there's definitely some consanguinity with Poem 58 . Best. Leo.
5:02 We expect you to learn this bit for your next live stream! 😁🎸🔥
This song is incredible! The horns, the killer bass, drums, and especially Terry Kath. Starting at 7:30 we either have: 1.Two Terry Kaths sound on sound. or 2. Two guitars. Probably solution 1. I never heard this song until recently even though I was a huge Chicago fan since way back there in the 70's. Thanks for the video!
It's always incredibly amusing listening to a band like Chicago's earlier stuff, and compare it to their 80's MTV garbage. Wow, talk about devolving!
Yoo YOU WERE IN MY RECOMENDED you have grown good job
Howdy Ledgane, yes indeed:) I made a second channel and it seems to be doing rather well. How've you been?
@@DiconDissectionalReactions I have been doing pretty well. Im just taking a mental break and then ill start my grind again. Thanks for asking, how have you been?
@@Ledgane I've been good:)
Heavy Metal as a genre came about a bit after the release of this song. Steppenwolf coined the name when they included the line 'heavy metal thunder' in their song 'Born To Be Wild'. Indeed; this could be considered Heavy Metal, but also any other genre like funk; however when you say that 'Chicago' is your best Heavy Metal act, people would look rather strange at you:). This is a similar reaction to me when I first heard the song as a 13 year old back in 1969
I only listen to Chicago when Terry Kath was still with us. Hope to be able to listen to more Terry Kath in the next life !!!
WOW! I had a blast just watching your reaction as the song went on. I listen to this song every time I put on my Chicago four disc collection. Funny thing about this collection. The first two disc's are full of incredible songs, one right after the other. i can listen to the first two over and over. But the third and forth CD's, even though they have popular and successful songs, I only listen to one or two songs on those cd's. I much prefer the early Chicago. And FYI the official name of the Band is The Chicago Transit Authority, but people started calling them by Chicago, so that's what they started going by. Great reaction.
Actually the real Chicago Transit Authority (Chicago's public transportation bureau) tried to sue, so to avoid they agreed to change their name.
That's the funkiest bass line I've heard in a long tine. Gotta learn that one.
Peter Cetera ;-)
Dicon gets this music at a very deep level.
Congrats dude, I'm really pleased for you.
I've always thought Terry had a metal metal tone for it's time. Glad to hear I wasn't the only one
This is an overlooked gem from this album. There was no "before Terry Kath." For your information he was with the band from the beginning until his death in 1978.
Kath, Cetera, Seraphine were every bit as good as Cream or other power trios of the day. Terry was their heart and soul 😢🙏♥️😎
I do remember the 1st time with this album...a miraculous gift !!
Love the channel Daniel! Keep doing what you are doing. I’m not sure if you ever intend to hit up some blues but there are so many great blues guitarists. Don’’t worry,, you can still be into prog rock as I am (Yes, Genesis. Jethro Tull.....). But I digress. One of my favorite blues guitarists is the late Stevie Ray Vaughan. He is best heard live. One of his best songs to watch/listen to is “Texas Flood....Live at The El Mocambo”. It is life changing!
It's so cool watching youngsters dig on terry kath in his time
It's off the 1st album. So, of course, Terry Kath would be on it. And, all you have to do is here the opening guitar to know it's him. Easily one of the most underrated guitarist ever.
Chicago II Album is a great one to listen to from beginning to end. Side 4 It Better End Soon medley and ending with Where Do We Go From Here is very fitting for where we’re at in 2020.
I luuuv seeing youngster feel this uniquely classic soulful jazzy improvisational!? Masterpiece .. the whole album is stunning (except for the free form guitar track - like we needed any more evidence of his virtuosity!)
FREAKING EPIC ... This is their 1969 debut album!!!!!!! So I was 13 my FIRST listen was hanging out with my horn student classmate/best friend basement and were BLOWN AWAY. Raised on Jazz & Funk They immediately became our favorite rock band after Hendrix before I discovered PROG 2 years later!
That entire album is off the charts. Kath goes off. A classic.
This is from their very first album. Awesome album
I'm so glad you enjoyed this great song from this phenomenal album. Kath's guitar playing from about 3:30 to 3:55 always struck me as sitar-like once again demonstrating his versatility. Someone else suggested listening to "Introduction" from the same album. Excellent idea, but for a treat, also listen to the version from Leonid & Friends.
Chicago-South California purples or liberation
Kath was probably the most underrated guitarist ever. Yet admired by Hendrix.
Terry Kath was a master at distortion. Glad you got an education from it. I miss the '60's and '70's.
So glad you selected this one! I was stunned the first time I heard it too. (btw, your video title says Poem 85, but maybe that's by choice).
Recently discovered #dicondissectionalreactions and really enjoy your channel. Would love to hear you react to one of my favorite bands The Cure Inbetween Days.
Takes your breath away doesn’t it, one of a kind band
You tickle the daylights out of me! Will you be my honorary grandson? I can't get mine to go near the the 60's and 70's! 💃
How did I miss this one. I frikin' love this whole album! Terry Kath is the man.
Haven't heard this for ages, sounds very similar to Zappa's guitar on Hot Rats...both 1969, but Kath wins it...
Hey man. Great channel. Great find. How about some Marillion...”Out Of This World” , “The Space”, or maybe “Neverland “. Cheers.
Yep, he needs to do all of those- but he has already reacted to The Great Escape not so long ago.
The new Script for the Jester remaster sounds amazing.
This form Chicago Transit authority, there 1st LP. Terry Kath was kicking ass. This a love song as a metaphor for how many felt about country during the VN war and disappointment with authority and leadership. Note: the change denotes danger! The democratic convention had just happened in 68 which turned into a police riot!
Please check out “One More Time to Live” by The Moody Blues... Off the album EVERY GOOD BOY DESERVES FAVOUR... Very different from DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED... Studio version is best but the live HD version is almost as good... Peace...🤟🏼✌🏼
Another "1st" trifecta LMAO!!!
these guys were SO good !!
NOW YOU ARE UNDERSTANDING WHEN MUSIC WAS AWESOME !!!!!!!!
AMAZING!! From that era!👍👍👍 Do a reaction to "Liberation" from the same album.
I was 16 when this album came out
Unbelievable
But it was very doubtful you would ever hear this song on the radio
1st album they're best.
Late to comments but the intent of this intro Jam was to to highlight the core 3-piece strength of the classic Chicago lineup against its peers of the time - Cream, The Experience, & others... Yes, Kath takes the well deserved spotlight, but Cetera was a critically underappreciated bassist and Seraphine was highly lauded by all the old big band jazz drummers of that time. Adding the horns, organ and vocals to the final part of the song truly demonstrated the product was better than the sum of its parts....
On this album Daniel I'd recommend Introduction which is the first song on the album appropriately. It's fantastic!
Fantastic choice.
The first time I heard these guys was just after their first album came out. They were the warm-up act for Jimi Hendrix-‘69 at The Forum in LA. We heard a lot of the songs from the album - I’m a Man, Questions 67 and 68 and this one (I think, it was this song - a gloriously, mostly instrumental jam, anyway). We’d never heard of them before and were blown away and instant fans.
:) :) Very enjoyable reaction, Daniel! Not sure which I enjoyed more ~ the song or watching you discover & enjoy it! :)
You’re are a very cool young man…Bobby T …from Chicago!!! .. Neighborhood stuff!!
great album.. very ahead of its time.
I really miss old Chicago.
Terry Kath on vocals, too!!!
amazing show live,,,,,i was a frequent flyer of chicago shows
With the exception of Free Form Guitar (7 minutes of Kath sounds great on paper, but it's pure unlistenable noise) everything on the debut is incredible, this is one of my least favourites from it, which says it all really! Definitely one of the first cuts to play someone who sneers at Chicago for being a pop ballad band, that's for sure!
Joseph Simpson-Bushell well it’s a double album from 69 so bound to have a couple of songs like this. I agree it’s a little half baked but it’s more of a showcase piece for the musicians than a proper song for listeners.
free form guitar i find quite interesting. a little glimpse into the great Terry Kaths id.
free form guitar i find quite interesting. a little glimpse into the great Terry Kaths id.
Terry Kath.....Jimi Hendrix favorite guitar player at the time!
No precedent here. This stands alone so far out no one has ever come close to the raw skill and awesome self expression seen here in this album.
I'd forgotten how great this was.
Hi Daniel, great reaction to a great band. I would like to suggest Dialogue Part 1 and 2 (long version). I think you’ll totally like the lyrics. Also, any song they performed live at Tanglewood is a great performance. Thank you. Janet from Louisiana ☮️🖤🤟
Terry kath is the greatest guitarist of our time.
two more (of many) songs from Chicago that are worth listening to are "Dialogue" (Part I & II) and "Poem For The People"
thank you for this reaction. nice.
