Trust me. I've listened to this song for 45+ years and it's never, ever gotten old. Never! It's still always fresh and wonderful. So enjoyed watching you enjoy Chicago for the first time!
when that Chicago Transit Authority album came out my high school musician buddies formed a band just to play their stuff- they all went on to careers in music- me, as a bass player with little talent, stuck with college, etc., but still love their early music

I’m a Chicago fan, so this is a respectful suggestion: Take a listen to Leonid and Friends, 25 or 6 to 4. They are a Chicago tribute band. They do this song with absolute perfection. Absolutely phenomenal tribute.
Jimi Hendrix was asked how it felt to be considered the best guitarist of the era. He replied: I don't know but you should ask the dude in Chicago". His name - Terry Kath (RIP)
It is interesting that he would write a song about writing a song . Sitting up all night and looking at the clock at 25 or 26 minutes to four o'clock, giving up and writing a song about his writer's block. I remember these guys well from the 70s and 80s.
LOVE the terry kath years back when they were an authentic rock band in the upper echelons,cant abide the girly ballad years though.

I would recommend a quick follow up with their live rendition at Tanglewood now that you have heard the group. Terry Kath is a BEAST on that solo. I think most reactors overlook the fact that this is 50 year old music.... Keep up the good work, and welcome aboard!!

Maybe my favorite song of all time. I saw Chicago live in 1970. Danny Seraphine on drums...Peter Cetera on bass, Terry Kath, a guitar God...and those horns! I knew you'd love this song, and this band. SO much of their stuff is SO GOOD...Make Me Smile is a nearly perfect song, Does Anybody Really Know What TIme it Is?, Beginnings, I'm a Man, Saturday In The Park..the list never ends...
I played trombone. Chicago was huge to me and my fellow brass players in the early 80s. And all their great songs were on the radio all the time, every day, multiple stations. It was so much a part of my music-listening life that it's hard for me to realize that younger people could have never been exposed to it. But it all disappeared from the radio about 20 years ago, the original "classic rock" format from 1964-1974, replaced mostly by 80s music. Thank God for UA-cam, right? It does my heart good to see all you young reactors finding this stuff for the first time.

You've got to check out the live version of this from Tanglewood 1970, you'll see why Terry Kath was Jimi Hendrix favorite guitarist.
All but one born in Chicago; all schooled and raised in Chicago; several attended the same music school; the both horn players (trombone and trumpet) and the woodwind were invited for tryouts with the Chicago Symphony; Terry Kath did not read music but he wrote "Questions 67 and 68" with help from the trombonist; they did their own music writing and Robert Lamm, the keyboardist, was studying at one time to do concert pianist; they had 3 very good vocalists in Lamm, Cetera and Kath; the drummer, bassist (Cetera) and Kath were extremely underrated for both playing and singing talents. Simply phenominal group

wish I could solo like him...amazing lead player, some folks play a lot of notes, but just to show technique, and no musicality, he plays a lot of notes, but all the right ones, they sound improvised as well , which I love, you can tell this dude had spent hours upon hours playing around with the fret board to be able to just bust it out like that

Chicago’s epic guitarist, the early departed Terry Kath, makes his guitar talk! Did you hear it?
Terry Kath is the guitarist & is really the most underrated guitarist ever. Hendrix said he was the greatest the first time he saw him & Joe Walsh said he couldn't figure out how Terry got his first to make the sounds he got out of it! Tragically, Terry was playing around with one of his guns & shot himself. He passed away the age of 32 leaving behind his wife & 3yo little girl. RIP Terry...gone but NOT forgotten 😢

Sorry if anyone has already commented, but listen to “Introduction”. First song off their first album, and it takes you through all the changes you can expect from listening to them. At least the 60s and 70s. When you get to the 80s, I jumped ship. But one of my all time favorite bands.
When Terry Kath died, the band died.
80's, my gosh, what trash. Top 3 band for me, pre-80's, with Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles. Terry Kath made this band, as good as the other pieces were, the band died when Terry died.

Chicago's trombonist wrote Make Me Smile which features horns. The song Beginnings is great and has the only Trombone and Trumpet jam I know of (near the end) and its incredible.
Have you reacted to Steely Dan yet? From all the stuff you've discovered here and loved, I'm pretty sure you're gonna love Steely Dan. They have that sound.

Peter Cetera - lead singer. Backups and harmony provided by Robert Lamm (keyboard) and Terry Kath (lead guitar and the guitar soloist). You like brass- and again I will urge you to listen to Questions 67 & 68. written in part by Terry Kath but primarily the trombonist. The song incorporates 3 distinct tempo changes - flawlessly and trombonist doing several triple tongues techniques.

My 1st favorite group as a young teen in the 70s. Their 1st 10 albums are all fire anything after is no longer the Chicago I grew to love.
And now I'm back in high school, just like that. Chicago was a favorite, and was never quite the same after the death of Kath, although they rank right up there with the all time best. Thanks fir this!
A great follow up song for you is Chicago’s cover of “I’m a Man” which was originally done (and done well) by the Spencer Davis Group. But Chicago took the song and completely made it their own. Recommend you listen to the audio version, not the live version from Tanglewood, only because the original recording has amazing production quality. So fun to see how strongly you reacted to this song!
You may want to check out Leonid and Friends. They are a Russian Chicago tribute band. They are fantastic. Their version of this song and I'm a Man is just awesome.
I've seen these guys twice. First time was a Large venue with Peter C. singing and a huge symphony on the stage with them. Second show was a Small venue, only 5 of them and they were 10 feet from me!

I love liner notes and the liner notes for this song says that the group was in a crunch to come up with one more song to complete an album. This was written by Robert Lamm, who is a keyboard player and singer for Chicago. It's about trying to write a song, with the title referring to the time of day: either 3:35 a.m. (25 to 4) or 3:34 a.m. (26 to 4). Lamm explained on The Chris Isaak Hour: "I was living with a bunch of hippies up above Sunset Strip. One of the advantages of this particular house was that it was in the Hollywood Hills and I could look out over the city late at night. I wanted to try to describe the process of writing the song that I was writing. So, 'waiting for the break of day, searching for something to say, flashing lights against the sky' - there was a neon sign across the city. That song came from the fact that it was 25 or 6 to 4 a.m. in the morning when I looked at my watch - I was looking for a line to finish the chorus.

I’m a huge CHICAGO fan. And bring a bassist and sing falsetto, the lead on this one, Peter Cetera, is one of my HUGE music hero’s (he sings tenor AND is their bassist.)
But, love CHICAGO’s early music in the 60’s and 70’s to their comeback in the early 80’s when I was in high school and lead-guitarist Terry Kath already passed.
THIS song is hands down my fav Rock song off there’s. You need to catch the live version of this one with long haired Terry kickin’ booty on in that final 4-5 minutes or so on guitar.
And, Cetera’s voice was crazy cool on it.

I was 15 years old when 25 or 6 to 4 came out.Didn't know what it meant.But when it came on the radio I lost my mind.
School bands everywhere tried to play it.It is a very popular song.

Another great band from the same period, with a similar sound, Is Blood, Sweat and Tears. Other subs will have specific suggestions...I only remember one of their songs off-hand......Spinning Wheel I think was the name.
"You made me so very happy" is another one of their songs. In middle school I remember in music class singing Spinning Wheel.

It's the horns, rock and roll had fallin' away from horns as the electric guitar had become the soloist, there's line in Sultans of Swing, by Dire Straits "they don't give a dam about any trumpet playing band, it ain't what they call rock and roll." that they both brought horn's more to the front at about the same time gives them an association more than their music. That said the music is all wonderful.
I opened as a juggler for Blood, Sweat, and Tear, Dave Mason and Poco in '99 in Oceanside Ca. Small venue great outdoor concert. Their horn section is incredible.

Terry Kath was the amazing voice in this song. He was the leader in the early Chicago albums. After he passed they had Peter Cetera as the lead singer, and the songs were more ballads.
So that is what changed.
Terry Kath is on guitar, but it's Peter Cetera on vocals (and fat fat bass) on this. Cetera did lead them more towards ballads after Terry died but he was a key member from the beginning.

If you dig funk, check out Poem 58 on the first album. Terry Kath on guitar & Danny Seraphine on drums will blow your mind in the long instrumental first part. Peter Cetera's bass shines in the vocal second section sung by Robert Lamm.

Chicago's brass section also has toured with Earth Wind & Fire. I don't know if you've heard their music yet but they are one of my fav bands. Songs : September, Fantasy. You'll be blown away I promise (pun)!!

I absolutely have loved Chicago since first hearing 25 or 6 to 4 when I was around 15.
But they are so versatile.
A couple of songs are "Color my world",and one they recorded with the Beach Boys "Wishing you were here".They had so many ,but these two were different.
"Make Me Smile / Now More Than Ever" (This is the best edit off The Best Of Chicago album.) It's originally off Chicago Ii album from a multi-part suite.
"I'm a Man" off Chicago Transit Authority album.
Those are a must. Much more to suggest as time goes by. They have 36 albums and a huge variety of music styles and mix of genres with many hits across 5 decades and sold over 120 million albums, so there is a lot to choose from.
Two horn bands came along at the same time. Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears. Chicago had 3 different singers until their guitar player Terry Kath died. BS&T had Al Kooper as their main man, composing and singing, until he left after their first album and they replaced him with David Clayton So both bands went through some changes. Particularly Chicago when Peter Cetera, bass and vocalist, also left.

You really, really should see the live performance. Terry Kath, the guitarist, shreds the livin' daylights out of that solo!!! I think it is the performance at Tanglewood, if I'm not mistaken. And there are so many awesome Chicago songs, I hope you will do more soon. Like, for example.... Beginnings, Introduction, Saturday in the Park, Does Anyone Know What Time It Is, Colour My World... just to start off with (all very early Chicago).

Back in high school, during the early 70's, our pep band used to play this song, without singing, while the b-ball team was doing the pre-game layup line. Got the crowd and the team very pumped. By the way, guitar solo by Terry Kath, Jimi Hendrix's favorite guitar player. That's saying something.

Chicago was once the warmup band for Jimi Hendrix, and he thought Chicago's guitarist Terry Kath (R.I.P.) was the greatest guitar player he'd ever heard; high praise indeed from the incomparable Hendrix. May I recommend "Mississippi Delta City Blues" from CHICAGO XI ? Nice work and analysis on 25 or 6 to 4; the title refers to the time on the clock 25 or 26 minutes to 4 AM, that Robert Lamm, the writer was observing. The LIVE version that inspires me is CHICAGO (and the Band Played On), remastered DETROIT 1992, feat Dwayne Bailey, guitar. I felt the same way you do about Chicago, EWF, Billy Preston, and Blood, Sweat & Tears nearly 50 years ago. You have a good ear and an eye for talent.
For me, there are two different Chicagos, with Terry Kath and after Terry’s passing. The guy was a beast! You also have three different lead vocalists in the band. This is Peter Cetera but Kath and Robert Lamm also sing lead. You must see the live version of this song at Tanglewood. Kath really goes off! The Chicago Transit Authority album, Chicago 2, and Chicago 3 are fine albums. Try “Make Me Smile” “I’m a Man” “Color My World” ti name a few. Listen to those 3 albums in their entirety!
Every high school or college band has played or tried to play parts of this music since the 70s.
Chicagos catalogue is a rabbit hole every reactor should delve into.

Nobody can do justice to this a cover song but Chicago.
Until Leonid & Friends showed up. These guys are Russian/Ukrainian! I think the story is that Leonid transcribed everything from the album, and put together a group of musicians to record this as birthday present to himself. It is note for note the original version, great vocals, incredible guitarist, and Igor the drummer is the best I've ever seen.

Their early albums with Terry Kath are the best. Try to watch their live performances. The audio is not as good but to actually watch them play you can really appreciate just how good Chicago was.

I like how you said that you have a lot of young followers and also want to do their request. Glad you are thinking of them. When I was young the only way to hear a song I wanted was by listing to a lot of music on the radio and hoping that the DJ would play my favorite songs. Chicago was one of those groups that I would listen to a lot. There is a difference between the 70's and 80's Chicago and reading the comments I see it has to do with Terry Kath death. I was hoping to get more info about this in the comments, so I'm off to do my research on this guy.
You listening to a REAL group of musicians!! Among the GOATs of 1970s and of all-time! High school and college marching bands still play this!! In fact, Chicago played with the Notre' Dame marching at half time of a football game in the last couple years.

Nice work on this excellent musical experience by Chicago, Chod. The horn section is like a wave blast, sending a source of blistering energy into the song, and Terry Kath’s guitar solo is damn near dangerous. These guy’s put out some awesome tunes, so glad you enjoyed this one.
Try listening to the Approaching Storm on Chicago III...it's one reason why I bought the albums instead of 45 records with 2 songs ...most artists put their all in all their songs and a lot of gems never got radio exposure...enjoy your journey and thanks for sharing..🤙
Their first album, released in 1969, was called Chicago Transit Authority, but they had to change their name to simply 'Chicago" as the transit system in Chicago (CTA) threatened to sue them over the name. That album is full of great music. Some where along the way someone referred to the band going "disco". NO, they did not. Their songs took kind of a softer lighter sound somewhat as they started writing more ballads. Then, in early 80's they took on more of the 80's sound.
My dad and I saw them in concert together and that was a blast with my DAD.
Something that most people will fail to suggest, is Ballet For A Girl In Buchanan. I includes Make Me Smile and Color My World. Listen to the live Tangelwood version.
Gotta check 25 or 6 to 4 live! This song, this group live at Tangle wood is even better.
