I’m not bragging here, lol. But I’ve done a ton of yoga and meditation in the past 20 years (I’m still struggling through life but anyway) and I realized over the last few years how slowly I can breathe. I have lain in bed at night breathing in a fairly relaxed yet consciously slow and comfortable way, and noticed that my former partner, who had alll the breathing issues, would sometimes breathe 15 times in the amount of time I breathed once. Bizarre but true.

I have had problems with breathing due to asthma since shortly after birth. I have been diagnosed with bronchiectasis due to overuse of antibiotics used for treating constant infections over the years and have had it since 2004. I recently went to pulmonary rehabilitation sessions which lasted for 8 weeks and was held for 1 hour twice a week. They took us through exercises which consisted of walking on a treadmill, doing sitting and standing exercises, arm bike exercises, weight exercises, stationary bike exercises, step up exercises. One thing that I thought they would most definitely do was take us through some breathing exercises to try to make our lungs more efficient. Not one time did we have any instructions on how to breathe. I did ask the physiotherapist about breathing techniques and about how to breathe. She said most people breathe normally in the upper respiratory airways which is normal and said that when exercising you inhale through the nose and do purse lipped breathing on the exhale. That little talk lasted approximately 2 minutes. The only instruction I got on how to breathe. Totally amazed that no instruction was given on breathing techniques. Just one comment though. The introduction and ending of the video is the sound of a person breathing in and out but instead of it being through the nose, it's clearly through the mouth which is in total contradiction to what you are teaching?????

I think it's because both of it can have health benefits. The suggestion from James reduces chronic stress and the Wim method produces a burst of stress which can be also beneficial just like sport. It's the same with cold therapy and sauna or high intensity interval training.

I believe it’s the inhale through the nose that matters most. That is where the air is filtered, temperature controlled, and humidified for easier absorption in the lungs. Exhaling through the mouth has a host of valuable benefits as well. We are big fans of “nose to mouth” breathing.

I really recommend reading the Breath book (by James Nestor, appearing here). My guess, based on my reading of it, is that if nose breathing is making you yawn (gulp breath) it's because your airways are obstructed. There are things can do about this, detailed in the book.

@@fourierrocket If your chest can't expand properly, it seems likely to me, based on my reading of Nestor's book, that your diaphragm is also not fully contracting for exhalation. The vital importance of exhalation - more than inhalation - is one of the many counter-intuitive gems in the book. He also has an interesting chapter on a guy who had techniques for freeing the chest and the diaphragm. I don't want to over-promise if you have a specific condition, but it might well help.

1-Says that the perfect breath is to inhale 5.5 seconds and exhale 5.5 seconds. But then it says that your exhalations should be a little longer than your inhalations. Can someone clarify this for me?
2- Regarding the first doubt, I have two more doubts according to your answer:
    a) If the main goal is to get a 5,5 second breath during the whole day, how do I achieve this?
    b) If on the contrary your inhalations should be longer during the whole day, how can I achieve this?
3- Talk about excessive breathing and breath holding. Here it would be enough to do the Wim Hof breathing (TUMMO), wouldn't it, because in it you do both.
4- How does this apply in sports?
    a) weight lifting
    B) running/walking
5- And when sitting for several hours? because the posture complicates the breathing.
