great vid man, if i need to do this on my c63 i will be referencing this. Its hard to come by a high quality DIY sometimes for M156
Thanks Bro!

Hi mate. we actually developed and sell the plate that wears out inside the camshaft actuator. If you or any of your customers want to rebuild it and save money rather than paying for a new one we can certainly help you out. Great video by the way.
Thanks that sounds great!
How to buy the plate do you sell a new pin?
Can I get your email?
@@gvr3682 Just google Auto Bach.
They are in Australia.
Do I gotta send it out?
Again, very professional and entertaining! Looking forward for the next parts :)
Thank you very much!
Right on bruh. I have a code of p0013. cam position solenoid open circuit. I pulled solenoid and manually tested, it works. Tried your wrench method on cam intake, then exhaust. The exhaust was tight at first and then it moved at least an inch or two. Now I know the main problem of my code. Thanks for this video. It helped me a lot.
Glad it helped
Hello all,
Thank you for sharing this video. My experience with ticking noise in.cold start that started when my car had 36,000km only .. c63 507 edi.
Things u need to check:
Oil level
If you live in a hot climate area where winter is 20 c and summer over 40 c change ur oil to synthetic 15w50 ( yes sir) oil thickness is important in hot climate.
Check camshaft and tappets see if there is any scratches. Finally do what the gentleman is doing in this video.
Thanks for your comment!
Same here 507 edition and mine started at 22.3 k kms. Right now.
These german cars will keep you busy, same issue on my audi b7, respect g
Yes they will! But I love them. Thanks for checking out video and leaving comment 🙏🏽
Really lovely video there you explained everything nice and clearly. Thank you 👍
Thanks for taking the time to comment! 🙏🏽 Glad you enjoyed it
Absolutely fantastic video mate! all well explained.
Thanks I appreciate that!
Some things I'd like to add after doing this:
1. The obstructive hoses on the drivers side are one bolt and a zip tie away from not being a problem, it's 100% worth doing because...
2. Right next to the main coolant hose on the thermostat housing is the fitting for the breather tube. It is not strong.
3. A new thermostat is about $160.
4. Removing the steering resevoir also lets you see the 40° on the crank, otherwise it's nearly impossible even with a camera.
5. When you pull off the adjuster you'll see a paper thin friction washer. Optimally this is single use but I haven't heard too many stress the point. Keep close track of those either way.
6. When checking the timing, there's a small margin that's acceptable if the tools don't line up exact at 40°. For example: you can only fit the tools exact on one side and not the other when you're as close to 40 as you could get on the crank. I'm told the chinese tools could have stricter tolerances so as long as it's within a couple degrees it's nothing to tear your hair out over.
Thanks again for the vid. Was there ever a part 3?
Thanks for taking the time to leave comment!
Really need part 3- please
@@malveja I think there's a reason there are more videos taking it apart than putting it back together. I've put a couple thousand miles on mine since the job. What do you need to know?

thank you a million times, my car is currently making that rattling noise when starting, the dealer told me it's going to cost me 75k
75k!? 😯 Oh no! I glad I was able to save you that! Thanks for checking out my channel and leaving comment. Good luck 👍🏽
I think you mean $7,500?
Uhhh? You mean $7.500? 75k I can buy another engine & other stuff for the c63.
great detailed explanation, not looking forward to changing adjusters in the coming weeks.
Yeah, it’s a little involved, but not too bad. Good luck! 👍🏽
@@DriveTalkCars did yours rattle on every startup or at random times?
It started off randomly then eventually happened every cold startup
I have a 2010 e63 same engine and problem, I have turned the crank over to 40 and all locking tools are fitting on the passenger side, on the driver side where my adjusters went bad , the hole for the lash gear is only opened slightly and I can’t clamp it on fully, all the other locking tools fit. Any tips ?
Hello! Did you need to do a calibration for the camshaft adjusters after? I have replaced lifters on the left intake camshaft. I used tool for cam and adjuster but now I have check engine light (Yellow). Engine runs as it should.
I tried removing the cam adjuster bolt, but it's very tight. Is that normal? It super tight, I'm unable to remove the bolt. Will it be fine to force it?
Great video! Question for you. I unplugged both the int & ext solenoids (on both sides) from the wire harness to reinstall the top covers, and am not sure which one goes where on the wire harness. Does the intake solenoid connect to the connector closer to the front of the engine or does it connect to the connector furthest away from the front of the engine? Should have marked them!
Hi, I'm planning on replacing one of my cam adjusters and I was wondering where you purchased all your gaskets.
Great great info! Would you recommend replacing the valve covers gasket even if, I’m just checking? Thank you!
Yes, I would if they haven't been changed recently. They are fairly inexpensive and would make sense to change while you have the covers off anyway.
I’ve been trying to find the camshaft timing tool for a 2013 Mercedes’ C250. I see this is for the m156. What’s the code for the 2013?
I have a slight rattling noise in my cls 550 2014 on startup , I wonder if this is it.
Great job. But M156 most happened issue might be the lift tapping sound, I am looking for that DIY video.
Thanks for great content! Is it harmful not repairing this? Driving like this for 6 months (c43)
Thanks for the comment! Yes, in my opinion anything that involves lubricating engine needs to work correctly. I would definitely repair it. It will only get worse over time. Good luck 👍🏽
Question, are all your DIY under the E63 playlist correlated to the W204 C63 as well? Thank you
I believe so since they share the same M156 engine.
@@DriveTalkCars I would think so too! Thanks mate
Do I have to use the timing tool if I just wanna change out a bad timing cover?
As long as you are not doing anything else but replacing the engine timing cover you don't need the timing tool.
Do the cams need to be locked with the tool and the pulley rotated to 40 degrees before taking the timing cover off?
I don’t believe so. The timing covers doesn’t hold the cam adjuster. The lock and 40 degrees just have to be done before loosening the cam shaft bolts.
the backlash is for preventing gear noise. These are straight cut gears pushing cams, so lots of back and forward movement. If there is slack you would hear it...a lot.
Thank you for your comment! 👍🏽
Question: Can you do one side at a time? So basically you only need one cam locking tool right? Say for example you start with the right side. You can lock the cams in place remove each adjuster, flip the barrel or replace, put back together, and then move to the left side and do the same thing all over again? Or do you need two tools and lock both sides of cams in order to perform this job? That has been my only cofusion to this job. Besides that I know I can tackle this job.
You can do one side at a time. The locking tool is compatible with both sides by flipping it over. Some people say use two because it is faster/easier, but I don't think it is necessary.
@@DriveTalkCars Where can I find the timing plate???
Hi mate can I aske where from you order new camshaft adjuster
I got it from eeuroparts.com
The best or nothing at its best
Exactly! LOL
hi, thanks for the video...very informative...what sort of head bolts do you have in your C63?
Thank you for your comment and checking out my channel! Greatly appreciated. Luckily, my E63 has the new updated head bolts.
Is the process about the same for a 2013 c250?
No sure to be honest. But I would think it depends on the engine. I’m thinking the process should be similarly
hi, i have put the pulley on 40°, i can fit the timing tool on one bank but it miss small rotation to fit the tool on the other one (maybe 0,5mm), did you experienced the same thing ? thanks
Yes, I had the same issue. I had to adjust it slightly until the rear lock tool was able to go into place.
that rattling could be in any other meceredes leaking camshaft? I'm asking because mine was repaired poorly and I'll be fixing it soon.
"Rattling noise" is one of those things that can be hard to diagnose. It could be timing chain, adjusters, or something else. The cam adjusters on the M156 engine is such a common issue that most times if there is a rattling noise (especially during startup) it is the cam adjuster. As far as other Mercedes engines I can't say.
Great video, thanks for posting. Any small issues with the timing tool?
Thanks, I appreciate it! No real issue with tool. This may vary or course, but I didn't experience any issues. If anything, I would say the rear locking part of the tool can present a slight challenge when putting it in the back of the camshafts to lock them. But all in all the tool is pretty straight forward.
@@DriveTalkCars likewise! Another question if you have the time.. On the crank pulley are two lines, one at 40° and one maybe 5° ahead of it. I line up with the 40 mark going clockwise, adjust the cams by single degrees to where the guides (front and back) fit on both sides effortlessly, but when I crank it around to check my work it usually lines up better with the mark in front and it's not exact. Am I doing something wrong or is that acceptable margin? Additionally, what are some common mistakes people make setting timing? Thanks so much for your time.
What locking tool did you purchase?

What’s the part number for this
great job as always

REPAIRING/REPLACING E63 AMG M156 CAMSHAFT ADJUSTERS - COMPLETE GUIDE
ua-cam.com/play/PL1KGP-3xBS_ysVe5kIkgy6EwpI3dpjkLi.html
Is there anyway to repair them versus buying new ones?
Yes, there is a way to potentially fix it. Check out this video ua-cam.com/video/V0eCEW2Y6_U/v-deo.html
How much would it cost to repair it? Got a rattling noise on my 08 e63 and engine code p0010
Well repairing it varies in cost. It depends on what you are doing to repair it. For me, I decided to try the pin flip trick (first) which is free if you don’t replace anything. If you are replacing items then you could spend a couple hundred dollars for a used complete cam adjuster or you could even just replace the plate that holds the pin and usually wears out. This route is questionable because from what I’ve seen most of the used cam adjusters are for the exhaust side which is usually the one that goes bad. So you may be buying another “bad” adjuster. Or...you can just purchase a brand new complete cam adjuster for $600-800 (these are the prices I found).
@@DriveTalkCars Is flipping the pin guarenteed to work? How long did you take it to do the entire repair?
I have a 2006 C280 with a M272 engine that has this problem on the left side (driver) cylinder head. The previous owner neglected the car by NOT changing the oil frequently. These multi cam/ flex cam engines need clean oil and correct quantity of oil or they fail in many ways.
Yes, oil is crucial with these engines!
Always remove the spark plugs before rotating the crank 🙏🏽
Yes, I agree! 👍🏽
any catastophic failures from the cam adjuster plate issues? I've got my new plates on order but am currently driving the car until they arrive
No, I didn’t have any catastrophic failures. I did drive with mine when it started failing, but I addressed the issue fairly early. Good luck 👍🏽
Everyone needs to find a competent mechanic with a Mercedes computer. This rattling noise will not go away with better oil or a replacement. My c63 came with the updated m159 lifters. You’ll need to remap the way your engine sends oil to these cams/lifters. It’s a simple fix that will save you thousands of dollars. This mechanic was also able to flush my entire engine with hydrogen to get rid of any possible carbon build up in the engine. It runs so well now lmao.. Dealers don’t want you doing this type of shit because your car will pretty much run forever.
Thanks for the info!
Hi, how do you know if it came with the m159 lifters? I'd like to buy the c63 but would prefer it with m159 lifters.
How can we know what type of lifters came with our cars?
I have a STAR computer, how do you do this?
Hi, can you share more information to me? I have a c63 and would love a possible solution like yours! TYIA
