- Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of Styx. I've had a number of requests to feature music from this legendary band, and this is technically the first time I've featured them on the LNL channel - so let's dive in!
Styx formed in my hometown of Chicago, IL in 1972 and by 1975 the had already released five albums with the original lineup, featuring the fretwork from the late-great guitarist John "JC" Curulewski. John left the band after the release of Equinox in 1975, which is precisely when Tommy Shaw joined the band.
This lesson features music from four of the early releases from Styx, and include chord-based and rhythm guitar examples from songs such as Young Man, Light up, Witch Wolf, Lorelei, Best Thing, You Better Ask, I'm Gonna Make You Feel It, and more!
Needless to say, if you're a Styx fan (especially the early years), a fan of classic rock music from the 1970s, a player searching for some new chord moves and ideas to stick in their bag of tricks, or maybe you're just curious what all the fuss is about - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

One of my musical claims to fame is that I used to play with Styx. Kind of. 😀 My fraternity in college hired them to play in our living room, an Otis Day kind of thing. This was pre-Tommy Shaw (John Curulewski was the other guitar player then) and Dennis DeYoung wasn't there. Later in the evening I sat in with them and sang War Pigs and Smoke On The Water. So i can say I used to be with Styx, but....
Just saw Styx here in Phoenix a few weeks ago. They still sound great. I went to see a Styx concert back in the late 70's in LaCrosse Wisconsin. I mostly went because Rick Derringer was backing them up. Styx really impressed me (I didn't know Tommy had joined the band). Tommy and JY did a North/South guitar duel which was really good. "Crystal Ball" was awesome as well. I was a big fan after that.
Gonna go listen to some early Styx now because that rocked 🤘
The attack on this episode was killer. You really sunk your teeth into the music
Tommy Shaw and James Young are great guitar players...I use to listen to that JY lead solo in Renegade over and over...Saw em the first time in 1979...Houston, Tx...
A lesson on late 70s/early 80s Starship with Craig Chaquico would be great
Runaway
Good tunes never expire.
A Styx fan since the 70's, finally getting to see them next month. Tommy Shaw sings and plays as good as ever, if not better than ever. Thanks man!
Styx really rocked back in the day. Tommy was / is a great guitar player ...thanks again David
They still do! Saw them last summer 👍👍
JY and Tommy are two of the best rock guitarists in history. Very underappreciated. Crank up Borrowed Time or Half Penny Two Penny or Eddie!!!!😊😊😊
Grand Illusion Tour 1978. Cobo Arena, Detroit. My first concert. I was 15. Good times.
So first off, david that tele sounds great and looks awesome,, love the yellow and the pick guard perfectly compliments it… noice! And early Styx, well you just cant beat it..
I’m a huge fan of early Styx. So much so I knew right away the tune you were playing at the start. Their early songs were mystical, heavy and cerebral. Though their newer album Cyclorama is a hidden gem of an album.
Agreed new one is great for sure and the early stuff ruled
Your lessons are always spot on. Great teacher!
Great breakdown Mr. Brewster. As a high school kid in the late ‘70s, we were unfamiliar with much of Styx’s work before Equinox (and we all thought Tommy Shaw played on that album), except for “Lady.” When I saw them in concert on the Paradise Theater tour, they didn’t do much early work (except, again, for “Lady”). Thanks for opening this old fart’s eyes to their earlier work. Much appreciated.
Awesome The Wooden Nickel days. First saw Styx at Northeastern Illinois University on Bryn Maur in Chicago early 70's. Love these early years Styx.
They were the first rock band I had heard in my youth. I was in awe of the way their lyrics. I don't want to mix philosophy with music especially on David's channel because we don't come here for that, we're here because we love music. But 50 years later the 1st album that introduced me to rock makes me shake my head because I can't be anymore involved in The Grand Illusion now as I was then. If ya catch my drift!! Enough said. Forgive me David. Back to the music.
A suggestion for a future episode. Terry Kath from Chicago
"Lovin you is the best thing that I've ever had" Thank you for the reminder, haven't listened to that song for quite some!
Rocked to "Equinox" on cassette in my '67 Barracuda back in the day.
Great lesson as always, Dave! I love Tommy Shaw! I have my group of main influences listed as EVH, Vai/ Satch/ Frank Zappa, Greg Howe, and 70s guitar players that bend strings! 😂
BTW, somehow, I was randomly unsubscribed to your channel when UA-cam had an update. Hopefully, your other viewers didn't have that same issue. All my subscriptions were reset. Thanks again!
Tommy Shaw and JY rock!
Great bass line in Light Up, and the wah guitar is so cool
Saw STYX last year and Tommy and JY still absolutely ROCK. Incredible players. Great video Dave. Keep up the great work
Do another video on the Shaw/JY years. It would be great
Should check out the hellacopters. Awesome guitar rock.
Light up !
Equinox is still the only Styx album that I'll listen to occasionally. It has a really interestingly dark production that I really love, and it has just a great hard rock vibe.
Sweet !!
Equinox album was when they really rocked, but then I grew up in the 70s ha
great job Equinox was good album
I used to have those early albums. Wooden Nickel Records, as I recall, was the label they were on at the time.
Chicago here too!! NW side
2 other rockin songs in Equinox, Midnite Ride and Thief of the Highway
Born to Adventure
Renegade scream. That was my fav
JY did a lot of lead vocals back in those days as well.
Great lesson! Styx was a great band!
Have you considered covering the chord play of Ty Tabor's solo work? He has some excellent songs IMO from his solo albums.
Best Thing ! classic. Wooden Nickle Rules. Southern Woman all day.
BILLY GIBBONS REINVENTEd THE BLUES WITH EVERY NEW ZZ TOP ALBUM! Thanks Dave.
The band Styx formed in the early 1960's when some beleaguered parents taped their toddlers romping in the living room......Wo-Wo-Wo-Wo.....Yeah-Yeah-Yeah-Yeah.......And they called it Styx!
