Burton himself in interviews describes 1991 as his darkest hour. Returns is not just dark, it's hopeless. At the end all the characters are either dead, or alone and broken. Magnificent movie, but if you take the campiness out of it, it becomes too hard to take. Shame it was marketed for kids.
