The funky fretless bass in this album is addictive, it was a strong step in a new direction but I loved it. It had an uplifting feel even though the lyrics had serious context. The sound is a tad muffled on this video compared to vinyl or cd, but it's still one of my favorites.
Gary discovered bassist Pino Palladino playing in a club, and immediately invited him to play on the "I Assassin" album. This was Palladino's first appearance on record, and from that point onward he rocketed to an incredible career as one of the most dependable, in-demand bassists in the business. Gary basically just told him, "Pino, do your thing," and turned him loose on every song. Numan has a very discerning ear for talented musicians and helps bring out the best in them.
Not sure that's all correct as far as chronology. He talks about playing on a Jules Holland record first in this podcast. ua-cam.com/video/k0Qe2yada_w/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
@@Emlizardo sorry, I was just letting you know he had played on something else before this (before the Jules Holland session, too, actually), I wasn't thinking you needed to know what exactly it was. I have to admit, when I first bought the album, I hated it. But I have to admit, it has really grown on me. It's a great mix of funk and synths. The Image Is is my favorite song from it.
@@ajs41 I have no idea, maybe because Dance before it had been so wonderfully experimental, and so it was a little different compared to that one in that aspect.
I think they're pretty much random. "DEB" is a reference to a girl he'd broken up with called Debbie. Like "little deals and S.U.s" in Are Friends Electric is a reference to a girl called Su.
I always have wondered what happened to the Ferrari 512BB used in this video. The Corvette from I Die: You Die has plenty of information online but this video is all I can find on Gary's Ferrari. If anyone knows anything please do let me know.
Interesting but a little disappointing, I've been familiar with this video for some time now I have it on a DVD. It could have been so much more. Gary's love for Ferraris is obvious, he mentions it in some of the song lyrics for the album this song is sourced from, I Assassin. He's also a bit hair challenged at this point in time, hats were a necessity. I don't Like or Dislike this video but I do very much like the song, it's a personal favorite along with the B side, The Image Is, an absolute masterpiece! Happy 40th Anniversary Mr. Webb, thank you so much. My tribute video, Gary Numan 40 will be posted soon....
This is one of those songs that's very hard to find in crystal clear quality unless you own the record or a very well kept cassette tape recording. My mom had a mixtape with this on there and I used to laugh at it because it sounded like someone was playing it outside of the car.
I am here however Gary is the true legend. . this video shows posted 5 years ago. the original album for this song was released in 1982. Gary Numan is the same age as Madonna yet has a longer span of making music and he is still active.
Love the longer version of this track.
Pino kills it on this record. Bassline heaven.
First time seeing this video. It’s one of the coolest Numan music videos I’ve ever seen!!!
One of my favorite Gary Numan albums.
Now I know where Dave Gahan learned to dance! LOL
Rob Harper I had the same thought 😂
🤣 🤣 🤣
And where He nicked His Hat Tailor from
I'd dance with him anytime ♥
Only ret**ds use 'lol'.

Pino Palladino, taking inspiration from Mick Karn of Japan.
I am revisiting all of these classics, can’t believe how fantastic they all sound.
I love how he plays every single role in this video

I looked at you mistaking needles for eyes.
bass is amazing, love it, great track!
Pino Palladino..Great fretless funky bass
For some reason I always hear "that Napa know how" when I hear that bass line.😂
Amazing song… killer bass
So good, reminds of other bands, Japan, early Duran Duran gods music was so experimental back then
I actually listen to this song and the Premier mix album and I absolutely love this song
The 12" is especially good
this is one of the coolest music videos ever argue with the wall

Love this guy ! ! !
Sheldon, is that you?) Very impressive artwork, Mr Numan, thank you for it!

👏👏👏👏👏bravooooo. Gary….
Esoteric lyrics, I can't always be sure I understand the meaning. Reminds me of something Neal Peart might have come up with

Genius
THIS here is MY Numan, fretless bass FUNK. FUCKING AMAZING
That's pino palladino, fantastic bass player, Mick Karn(from the 80s band Japan) played on the Dance album, some fantastic bass on that one

Cool! 😂😘💛
I prefer this 7" single edit to the overlong 12" version.
Thomas and The Magic Railroad (July 1997)
sounds like mick karn on the bass
Close. Pino Palladino. Mick Karn was however on the previous album, Dance.
@@calamusquill116 there's a video of NIN w/ gary numan playing the song w/ pino on bass. it was fucking cool.
Mick Karn provided backing vocals on one of the tracks on this album. This could indeed be easily mistaken for a Japan song.
Is it just me or the audio quality is weird on this?
Yeah, it's weirdly muted.

Did Sheldon Cooper just travel back in time just 2 appear in a Gary numan video?
Best era, he did Burger King commercials back then.
Hahaha I can picture that, I'm surprised he's stayed in such good shape in his 60s because you regularly see him eating burgers and coke.
The Elaine Dance: Its Origins Revealed. Although seriously, was he demolishing his prior personas as a break?
Sounds like the no parlez album
Remember "men in black", where the cockroach alien is wearing the human as a disguise? He moves like Numan dances in this video..
Bad fashion choices all the way through this video, and thank you Gary for not dancing like this anymore.
After Telekon, the next few albums were pretty crappy...but there's quite a few really good songs amongst them.
Sounds like Duran Duran
