How To Make A Guitar : Part 3/3 - EVERY SINGLE STEP EXPLAINED

  • In 2021, ANYONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO MAKE A GUITAR ! So here's a comprehensive guide to guitar making for anyone who's always dreamed of building a guitar from scratch, no matter if you already know your way around woodworking or not.
This is the final part of this building series aimed at absolute beginners!
We'll cover the neck alignment, the final details, the hardware installation, the electronics and more.
Making this tutorial was a lot of work, more than it takes to build a guitar I should say. But I'm glad I did it now, 15 months after my first build, because all the things I didn't know, all my mistakes, all the mishaps, all the uncertainties, to the last insignificant detail, are still very fresh in my mind. Those elements were the redline of this tutorial and hopefully they will help you plow through your first build ever :)
This is most likely going to be the only tutorial I'll ever make, unless you want me to teach you "how to mic a door using an AKG D112", or "how to use the footage of the same guitar to make 5 different videos on your youtube channel".
Jokes aside, I learned woodworking and guitar making only thanks to the internet.
So dear internet, with this contribution, wouldn't you say we're even ?
I don't have a Patreon, or anything of that sort, if you liked the video and want to support me, just show it to a friend who once vaguely talked to you about wanting to build a guitar.

    • @coreyselover8460

@@tchiksguitars Ultimately I think the main problem is that I should have made the neck pocket deeper, because the fretboard (and the nut, which is also too tall but I could file the notches down) is just way too high for the bridge. The fretboard was pre-slotted so that's no worry. I'll probably go back and try to fix it up soon!

    • @tchiksguitars
      @tchiksguitars  3 роки тому +10

Then it's an easy fix, just make the neck pocket a little deeper. Conversely if your fretboard is too low you can also shim the pocket :) I really recommend that book from Dan erlewine, it really explains the whole set up of the guitar with great details.

One way I like to set my neck alignment, is to hold the neck and the bridge where they'll be, then go diagonally from the left edge of the nut to the right edge of the bridge with some string, then do the opposite. If the string is the same length, you've got a straight neck!

Please don't ever delete these videos. It has been a 40-year-long dream of mine to build my own guitar. My dad planted that idea in me but life, well, it lifed (you know how it rolls). I have the time now and have watched a lot of videos from people saying this is what you have to do blah, blah blah. Yours is the best yet. I doubt there will be better. Actually, I'm going to delete all the other ones after telling them they are rubbish; joking (maybe). In video 2 I saw a tool for the neck profile that none of the others have used or even mentioned. I can't remember what it was called but it was a cool tool. It was to help with the neck profile. So naturally, I bought one. Of course, I will use it inappropriately as well. No, not on me silly.
Anyway, thanks for a very clear and concise trio of instructional videos. Just know I have subscribed and will now stalk you. In fact, I may even take a trip over to Belgium once I figure out how to trace people via their IP addresses.
    Cheers.

And yesterday I showed these three videos to my father, and it was all such a very pleasant quality time. Mind, I'm 25 and these moments don't happen as often, as they used to.

You’ve really created something special here. I can’t imagine anyone watching your videos and not coming away seeing the world a little differently. It’s one thing to show the process of building a guitar, and quite another to engage viewers in a manner that leaves them inspired to take on a new challenge minus the fear of failure. Here we see what can be done with the right perspective in place.
Two months ago I had surgery on my right thumb, which requires at least three months to fully recover. That was followed by surgery on my right ear. The success of both procedures require a serious effort to follow the doctors’ orders to the letter. This pretty much puts the things I love to do on hold. Taking a second trip through this series of videos has inspired me to get my workshop in order, and to make plans for numerous guitar projects that I’ll tackle once I get the green light. It also goes without saying that I can’t wait to get back to playing, the thing I love to do most.
Thanks for shining a light on what awaits me when I’m in good health. We’re lucky to have you.

Reason it's taking so long is I needed a lot of tools that I don't have so needed to save money for it then had to learn how to actually use those tools. Awesome series, I like how it is straight forward, non complicated, easy step by step with no screaming heavy metal guitar in the background and in the transition between scenes. Job well done.

I stumbled across your channel from looking into guitar building. Thank you for all this effort and attention to detail. Now, I'm addicted to your videos. Already subscribed. :) I have been playing guitar for more than 20 years now, but never really got into the details of what it takes to create a guitar. I really want to start building my old guitar. For now, it's more financial and finding space to do it is the bottleneck. But one day I will. And I will probably pivot on your channel for everything I need to reference. Again, thank you so much for what you're doing! Watching your guitar building videos is already very satisfying enough. :D

Thank you for making this series. I've been so invested, and now I'm preparing all the materials I'll need as well as tools. Also, thank you for proving that you don't need a lot of tools and a bandsaw and all that! Gives me hope

This is great, thanks heaps. It confirms the fact that I am scared of the neck and considering how many mistakes I have made already and I haven't even finished shaping the body yet I think I have good reason to be apprehensive. Having a ball and learning so much. I suspect it's not going to be pretty in the end but I don't care I'm just going to push ahead. It will be my first so it will be special and we will love it anyway :)

I've ordered some wood and have most of the tools so can't wait to get started. Many thanks again.
