- This is how I built a ukulele for my sister.
this is my second attempt at making a ukulele, I did build one for myself before the one you see in this video. my sister's is exactly the same as mine except mine has a quarter sawn figured maple fretboard, cheap tuning machines and doesn't have a heel cap.
0:00 Milling (with power tools)
0:42 Yay! Hand tools !
Specs are:
. mahogany top and back
. maple sides
. maple fretboard
. spruce bracings
. mahogany shop made kerfed linings
. walnut neck (14-ish ° scarf joint)
. walnut rosette inlay, mahogany tail block inlay
. walnut bridge with bone bridge saddle
. 345 mm scale length
. bone nut
. Gotoh tuning machines
. Aquila strings
Nothing flashy, just a simple & classic design.

7:50 A simple and ingenious idea
i knew it as soon as i heard it 😂
If you did an ukelele, you would do a venezuelan tipical instrument the El Cuatro.
As a uke player I found this process amazing. I never knew so much work goes into creating our delightful little instruments. Beautiful choice of woods.
Glad you liked it. Those woods were the only one I had so not really a choice but I like it too ! Kind of unusual :)
Can I ask u a question did u learn just uke and not guitar? Cuz justa suggestion as a quitar player, I learned to play guitar. But I can fairly easily play a uke too. So might be worth to learn guitar as well
@@nikitadubrovskyi4050 What for is to buy a guitar, when all that some people play is pop songs of bands, and all that.
Ukulele is more than enough for that purpose.
@@nikitadubrovskyi4050 because Guitar is overrated, everyone chooses guitar, there is no harm in making a stranger choice
@@nikitadubrovskyi4050 if you watch his earlier videos, you''l see he plays guitar
This brings me back the old times when my family still had a guitar factory.
omg that’s so cool!
@@laurennbull Yes, I can still remember the smell of the wood and the wood stain.
I want to learn how to build a guitar, but nones teach how
Your family sounds awesome😂
@@iavathar2120 I look for a teacher in the internet. Then I paid for a 8 month course in guitarmaking. I bought Cumpiano's book too.
As an aspiring luthier with a couple instruments under his belt, I gotta say I learned a whole lot from this video. I hope someday to achieve this level of craftsmanship.
Might be sooner than you think :)
I never understood why wasting time on cutting things in shapes and polishing them by hand is celebrated and aspired so much! sure you brought a beautiful idea to life but when it comes to luthiership, it's just doing most of it again and again. Why not spend time on crafting things that can automate the the process and then just focus on improvisation
@@mdchy3098 I get what your opinion comes from, but we probably live in 2 very different worlds (I'm not talking about geography, or politics, I'm just saying that profitability has no place in my life). It's a bit like your mom's meal versus fast food restaurants ... Furthermore, I use my brain all day at work, so it's nice to get back home and use my hands from time to time :)
@@tchiksguitars If you enjoy doing it by all means do it, I apologise if I came out sounding personal there. The meal analogy doesn’t work here in my opinion, I'm not saying they're the same. Look at it this way. Considering time is precious thing of all, I do not think anyone spending obnoxious amount of time in mundane, unnecessary, manual parts of cooking is something that deserves glorification.
Well again. Precious is subjective term. If by precious you mean time is money (or something similar involving a material dimension), then from my perspective (I insist, my perspective, not talking in anyone's name here), it's only precious if you spend time doing what you like. I happen to like woodworking with hand tools, like other people like fishing (hands), playing music (hands), drawing (hands), bushcrafting (hands), knitting (hands). You can also chose to watch people fishing, bushcrafting, knitting, and drawing on television too, but it feels a little less relaxing and/or challenging, wouldn't you agree ?
Well, I am no sort of woodworker, but I am a ukulele player. I watched this video, mesmerized, from beginning to end. Unbelievable skills and knowhow. A gorgeous ukulele with a great tone. Very nice playing. And both filming and editing are awesome! Many thanks for this great video.
Wow thank you so much for those kind words. I'm not a ukulele player myself so I hope there's nothing sacrilegious in my playing !
@@tchiksguitars Well, I have to disagree about your not being being a player! But even if you weren't, we uke players proselytize all the time. It's a great kind of instrument, and that one you made is a beautiful specimen!
@@tchiksguitars you say that you don't play ukelele BUT YOU CAN PLAY FINGERSTILE?! I play ukelele for more than one year and i can't do that, you are such a good player :D
@@tchiksguitars trop trop bien !
I’ve been playing uke for about 2 years and..... I saw him put 3 strings and thought “there’s supposed to be 6!” I’m learning the guitar rn and getting confused lol
I wish my brothers would build a uke for me, Instead they just steal my food lol
I do both, he has no excuse :)
Just told that to her, she added : "my food, and my guitar strap"
you're definitely the master of the planer. :D huge respect for your skills in using hand tools instead of machines, for many of the jobs.
Thank you ! I love using the planes because it's a very progressive work, I think it's sometimes more reliable than machines :)
When you are familliar to the names of wood because of Minecraft
*OH I SEE*
smh lol
If I could ever do this, I'd probably make a baritone ukulele and put standard ukulele strings on it.

Tu es belge francophone mais ton anglais écrit est absolument parfait. Nous, les français, là-dessus, on est des grosses brêles.
Ahahaha. Espèce de fou !
Kind of sounds like an m1 garand ping
@@sethmathews3273 I am definitely NOT in the weapons thing but I know that sound and yes, you are right. :)
There were times when I actually held my breath - "he's going to CHISEL away the edge of the face???"
As others have said, it's nice to appreciate everything that you cannot see inside the sound hole.
Hope your sister had a happy birthday.
Haha I was skeptical too the first time I did that but I couldn't figure out a better way to do it, and if you understand the grain direction it's not that risky :)
If I could ever do this, I'd probably make a baritone ukulele and put standard ukulele strings on it.
Good news! Some people do play bari with standard GCEA tuning so just go change it lol
100% hand made. Just wonderful.

@@janszikora8284 close enough in my book.
I was going to say 95 :p
building my own ukulele was my absolute dream, or At least someone builds it just for me,.
this is so cool, dude I wish you're my brother.
I wish I was my brother so I wouldn't even have to bother making them ahaha
Watching this makes me feel like I should've paid more for my ukulele.
same D: i bought mine for about 15 or 20 bucks with case, tuner and extra strings oof
Yours probably was more efficiently made in a line of production
@@2137milo Wow....I only got a cover. But damn yeah...the craftsmanship for this stuff is crazy.
same here
I’m just learning how to play ukulele and have absolutely no knowledge of anything related to woodworking, but I watched this video the whole way through and loved every moment of it. Your work is absolutely beautiful!
I have a new found appreciation for ukuleles as well (I mean after I built it)
Blessings for taking precious time to create this beautiful instrument for your sister...such a beautiful thought. Sharing your process (so much hand work!!!!) was really wonderful...I hope she enjoys it as much as you did the process!!! Thank you for an inspirational video
I think the amount of work that went into the video production wasn't far off the amount of work that went into making the ukulele. Both are outstanding! Thanks for uploading for our education and entertainment.
Thank you so much ! I'm discovering both aspects at the same time so it can only get better :)!
If i was in your place then i could have get bored and leave the work incomplete.......👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻bravo......for your hardwork........👍🏻👍🏻
Dude huge respect for this and guitar projects. I love to watch these videos and I admire your skills!
So impressed. I love this kind of work, I love all the different tools you use, it's a remarcable patience also. Amazing work dude, you are so talented
Beautiful craftsmanship. A pleasure to watch
I just build my first one from a kit. It came out pretty good. I like yours and the way your built yours!!!
A kit is a very good place to start !
Very fun watching this build! Great job and it does sound very nice! Thanks for sharing
Love the use of masking tape to see the lines better and to line things up rather than relying on hard to see pencil! Will use that technique from now on! Thanks!
It's beautiful. The different woods compliment each other and it sounds really good too.
Another episode of what youtube recommend to watch in quarantine
Apparently, this is a very good sister, since she is being given such a gift! Apparently, this is a very good brother when he makes such a gift to his sister! Happiness to your family !!!
Happiness and health to yours ! :)
beautiful build, simple timeless design...inspiring!
That's beautiful. You have a very fortunate Sister. :)
Didn't offer her anything in 28 years :p
@@tchiksguitars Trust me, I am a Ukulele player. Waiting 28 years for that Ukulele is so worth it! :)
Haha thank you ! I never played any high end ukulele so I didn't really know what to expect here, esthetically and sound wise, but as far as my ears are concerned, I'm now very happy about the sound this makes :) wish I could find an actual ukulele player to better showcase this but ..meh.
Excellent work! Astonishing.
wow I loved how you played at the end!
Wow man, you are awesome. I can't get over how fascinating the whole process is, this is only the 2nd vid I've seen of yours, but I'm hooked now. Subbed and probably going to binge your channel tonight.
It’s nice for you to do this for your sister
I have two sisters, so I hope I could do stuff like this for them one day :3
Make a 12 strings guitar and make them share it :p
tchiks guitars and furniture that’s a good idea 💜
Beautiful - the process and the end product.
Hypnotisée du début à la fin ! Quel travail ! Quelle perfection ! Vous êtes un artiste et un Maître 👏👏👏 !
What a sweet thing to do for your sister.

I've built a few but stewmac kits with pre-bent sises. Usually do it for newborns in the family, sold a few too. Yours are much better in
the kerfing. I love your mould also. Very professional.
Amazing build!

WOW very good job!
Watching this video made me realize there is no way I could do this as a present for someone. My woodworking skills are nowhere near this. Not even close.

Happy Birthday, sis.

brother love to sis......really very sweet of u!🌹❤️❤️😍
I deadass just stared at this video for the full 23 minutes this is mesmerizing as hecc
Beautiful instrument
Champion design & build....
I learned so much from this video! Thanks,
Amazing
Wow esto es un verdadero arte
Quedo hermoso
Great!!!
Super satisfying wood cuttting
Absolutely beautiful. Hah I was going to say I can't believe it's your second Uke. Then I noticed you normally make guitars :D and furniture. I've got a long way to go. This was a great video. One thing I haven't seen elsewhere is the little pins through the heel and iirc, the head.
Haha thank you so much ! " Normally " is a big word :p I started making instruments a year ago and only just finished my seventh build.
Truly brilliant, your skill and attention to detail is a credit to you. The only down side for me was the 11 adverts I had to watch during a 23 minute video! Thanks for sharing this.
This is very entertaining.
Next build a guitar for yourself.
“Wow, a lot of hand tools! And the other tools don’t seem too intimidating. I might even consider trying this myself. This is so inspi- aw, hang on, laser...”
Just kidding, I really do appreciate the craftsmanship. The fact that each and every part that was shaped was touched by a hand tool shows the care and personal attention that this ukulele has been shown. Well done.
It is very relaxing to work that way !
Who would we be without Jupiler ? Haha ! Really nice work as always !
Congratulations, your'e a master. Very well done.
Thank you ,!
beautiful present
Que gran trabajo lleva hacer un ukelele. 🙌❤🎶
