How come NO ONE is talking about the Cloak sacrificing itself??? That was the saddest part!!!!
The dark ending is a fine example of why I was so obsessed with What If comics back in the day. LOVE a doomer ending.
I agree. Every dam movie, comic, book or myth basically ends with the good guys winning. I will never claim to be a nice guy or a good guy so I like stories where the Bad Guy wins and not just the career of Razor Ramon, the OG Bad Guy.
I kind of like watching the doomed endings because it makes me appreciate the endings where the good guys win that much more. I don't like depressing endings just for the sake of being depressed.
*"Love can break more than your heart, it can shatter your mind"*
I felt that. Librarian O'Bengh made this episode.
But it is redundant. Because everyone know it is not your heart that feels emotions but your brain... So you die of heartbreak, it is because your mind shattered...
@@pugdad2555 Um no. He meant love can cause one to become mentally imbalanced.
@@thatdude33347 so..... unbalanced does not mean break or shatter then?
yeah Cagliostro was cool.
He definitely dropped some bars on us
This episode is the prime definition of “but, at what cost?” Moment. Love the episode
This is marvels twighlight zone. Loved the ending. Happy disney didnt flake out with the happy ending. Great episode
Multiverse of sadness: Dr strange trying to bring back his lover
Multiverse of madness: Scarlet witch trying to get her kids back
I was thinking along the same lines
This sounds pretty accurate to me
That will probably be dialogue in the movie. Something about Strange saying, "i know how this ends"
i kinda had problems with all the first 3 episodes, one being predictable, second one being good idea but not super interesting execution, 3rd one being pretty darn good but the ending was slightly underwhelming, but this one was basically how a doctor strange should go absolute 10/10. basically why dr strange is the most interesting character.
A person of culture I see. Well done, well done.
I liked how centuries of training and absorbing mystical power only made Sad Strange a bit more powerful than Happy Strange.
I don’t think so. He was only focusing on draining his power so he could absorb him. If he went all out to kill him instead I think it would be a different story
It surprises he didnt look for a nexus being (Wanda). Sidenote: probably we wasnt able to control the power. Ironic
Nah happy strange was always on the defensive, he was never close to winning. Dark strange could of ended him whenever be wanted
@@isseizoldyck7371 he could cut off his arms like he did the Shuma Gorath.
yea i kinda wish the overall fight had a bit more crazy clever stuff it did at the end but i think there was a bit much explodie stuff at the beginning, but the episode was fantastic best in a marvel series, not cos it was sad but because, they did a true ideas sci fi dr strange story, and i loved every second
I liked the ending too, because it wasn't typical.
I agree.
So Marvel can't go dark. So Marvel stories have only happy ending. What if just said really.
@@hamhockbeans dc also has happy ending.
Can we agree, that this episode was a cinematic master piece! It contained every form of animation Disney is famous for.
Yessir!!
This ep has so much emotional depth & gravitas… Easily the best ep in What If so far & actually darker than almost anything in the MCU so far outside of Tony dying. Amazing Ep.
The Watcher sittin back shaking his head and lookin at Strange like "Boy ain't no way boy...boy ain't no way"
Dad vibes lol.
“What if” comics were always great when they ended on a dark or ironic note. It gave them a Twilight Zone vibe. 😏
Someone was a fan forsure haha
I think Dr. Strange was commenting more on Peter's actual life. He lives two lives, as Spidey and Peter Parker. Secret identities make things complicated....
This was my favorite episode, it just felt so different and intense compared to the other ones
A.2 Strange/Sad Strange is officially named Doctor Strange Supreme, and we just lost a chance for Rob to say that with his awesome voice.
To talk about the episode, I love that we finally see an experienced Strange in a magic-on-magic fight. Although the first movie had this, it was mostly a novice Strange improvising on the fly with very basic spells in a desperate attempt to survive (and there were multiple times where he only survived because of luck/the Cloak of Levitation). In Infinity War and Endgame, we saw an experienced Strange but he wasn't fighting anyone with magic (the closest we got were telekinesis and the Infinity Stones). Here, we got to see two Strange with somewhat different magical skillsets duking it out, and it was a very cool fight to watch.
Anyone else noticed the watcher started to considered stopping strange but stops himself. I think by the end of the season the watcher will be like his comics version where he intervened with the earth
I think in No Way Home, Strange will MERGE timelines together rather than split one in two.
Tbh, I hope not. Im loving what if but I hope it stays its own thing.
That's crazy
@@junjiito6298 oh no everything marvel related is connected some how in some way haha.
If that's even what happened.
At this point I hope you get a cameo in a Marvel movie. Cause you deserve it.
He needs to be a writer for them
Since the Daily Bugle is a website now a UA-cam 'cameo' would be amazing
5:15 “OOHHHHH THATS A GOOD ONE!!!” Is what I said out loud while watching this. *Morgan Freeman Voice* however you have to keep in mind that the MCU it’s not that complex. It’s actually the opposite. It’s simple for the viewer. A lot of the viewers don’t watch this show. I’m telling you as a first hand experience from somebody who is surrounded by MCU fans. It could be the same thing re-introduced in a different way, or maybe connected! I hope the ladder like you do.
Thank you Rob, first video I’ve watched today where anyone has been on my wave length and made connection to the rant Möbius gave Loki about “the proper flow of time, because it’s suppose to because it has to! “ And Christine’s death being in the same ballpark, just being described differently.
Episode 4 was fire
Great plot
I felt so bad for him even when he asked the great The Watcher to put everything back and he said no 😔.
Rob question so how Captain American was fighting himself in Avengers? Did that open a time line, I know they went back to put it together even when Cap American stood in the past
They explain that in Loki. It was supposed to happen
Such a phenomenal episode it was. Absolutely phenomenal! 🙌
Been waiting for your video Rob, couldn't wait to hear you say that was "amazing" in your Rob voice 😂😂😂
I really don't think it's Peter talking that will have sabotaged Strange's spell. I think it will be an effect of the coming of Scarlet Witch tampering with universes at the moment Strange is casting. Then to be resolved in Strange II.
On another note, this episode felt SUPER Twilight Zone. Best one so far.
I don't know why y'all keep putting layers on Marvel movie stories.
@@jaym8988 well, it’s kind of the point of building out a “universe”
@@veritasagent7727 yes but not by what you are predicting. That’s lame and forced
@@BallIsLife353332 or it coincides with what happened in Loki. It’s really not that big of a deal, champ. And it’s probably a better guess than Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme messing up because a kid kept yammering. Marvel misdirects all the time in case you haven’t noticed.
@@veritasagent7727 I’ll give you a real world situation that’s makes what you see as improbable as completely practical. For my job I have over 70 safety phrases and sentences I have to have memorized word for word and be able to recite them on the spot at random. Easily doable with no effort. Put me in that situation where someone is in front of me completely throwing my flow, focus, concentration, etc off I will screw up whether it be multiple phrases or a single word. Yes everyone knows marvel misdirects only people who say this nowadays are the newbies to the mcu
I expected Strange to figure out a way to create the main timeline at the end by giving up his hands and erasing his own memory
Every single time I hear and see Alfred Molina's Doc Oc say, "hello Peter," a tear comes to my eye and my arm hair stands up.
I’ve been waiting this and wanted to say you called it rob
When the creators were discussing What If, they explained that this episode is important
Been waiting for this all day
Dude I look forward to your videos!
I hope you keep making them.
Awesome episode! What a tragic Dr. Strange....
Happy strange and sad strange sounds like what a night out with Schrödinger and the boys would be called 🤣🤣🤣
Dude your mind is just WOW like your comic book knowledge is amazing love your vids since day one with the really old intro!! And live these videos you get me so hyped.. PEACE
"That dog don't bark" Rob 2021
The hair raising on Peter's arm and then William Dafoe's face on a building 🤣
Near the end of the Good Strange vs. Supreme Strange fight, good Strange split the timeline using the same spell the Ancient One used earlier in the episode. It’s the same graphic. This gives Supreme Strange a chance to see and learn from his failures and another chance at redemption. We already know he has the power to affect other branches within his timeline. Hopefully he’s able to travel into the last existing branch, and find a way to save his universe.
To quote The Narrator's response to Tyler Durden in Fight Club: "I felt like destroying something beautiful."
Yeah I loved the little conversation between "Sad Dr. Strange" and the watcher
8:18 Rob is the cutest person ever lol. His innocence and excitement and nerdiness is so charming. Love ya bro
"Failure!"
you're a legit villain dude! hahaha
love your contents.
Is this the timeline where I’m watching Rob talk about a what if episode and it ends up being another Spider man video 🤣🤣🤣 #LoveYaBro
Rob: I am not evil.
Rob, gleefully during Eternals trailer: culling of the planet!
Just finished the episode then this dropped, nice
Good timing
Couldn’t wait for your take on this one.
Long time follower/fan. I'd continue to advocate you/this channel being WAY better than Emergency Awesome.
Rob can we please get some episode breakdowns from u? Like who are the monsters, the easter eggs etc??
I’m pretty confused about the idea of Christines death being a fixed point, but only for this alternate timeline because we know she is not dead in the main line story. You’d think that a fixed point is fixed in all realities. Good storytelling though.
That’s why it’s in an alternate universe…..hints “What If”
TBH, I don't think the fixed point is Christine's death per say, I think it's more "Doctor Strange has to lose something in the car accident to lead him to the Ancient One" type thing, where in the main MCU it's his hands that he loses, and in the What If it's Christine. In other words the fixed point isn't her death, the fixed point is Strange losing something in the accident, if that makes any sense.
I'm guessing it's a fixed point of this specific timeline. Idk it confuses me too.
@@lordofninjas1 except that in several of his "retries", there is not even a car accident. He tries letting her drive, not going to the party, even standing her up; and every time, she dies, car crash or not. "Losing something" yes, the car crash didn't specifically have to be the vehicle (pun slightly intended), but the loss of something...and that something in this particular universe was Christine.
@@herbalt I'm aware. I just said the car accident because that was the most common as well as being the one that is similar in the main MCU (which is what the comparison was asking about kinda).
I Loved the Face to Face scene, it's art style reminded me of early peak Disney "Fantasia Style". Awesome video Rob
The episode is based on the "Time Machine " like in the Time Machine, the death of his fiancee was the catalyst for the creation of the time Machine, so going back in Time to stop her death could not be avoided. The same way he became the sorcerer Supreme to keep his girlfriend from dying.
I immediately thought of that movie when I watched this episode
Your "happy ending" thing is why I love Fallen w Denzel!
You the best. You break it down. I appreciate.
Totally know what you mean by the dark ending. It leaves you in awe and in usually doesn't happen so when it does it like, "oh S***..."lol I had to watch it again after watching this and i absolutely love how uatu says "we've seen..." in the beginning. Making us apart of it! I love it!
it's nice to see actual consequences to events, rather than everything being reset to status quo. Adversity is something we all can relate to and it's nice to know that sometimes, in the comic book world, that there are unhappy endings and even our favorite heroes can make mistakes.
It reminds me of that classic interrogation scene from Menace To Society.
'You know you effed up didn't you.'
The fractured timeline is how we get the get the next Spidey movie, and the Venom tie-in.
When the timelines collapse back in to one, we get The Sinister Six, and Eddie Brock and Venom (now in the single timeline) help Peter defeat ALL of them, by allowing Venom to temporarily bond to Peter Parker, giving him the added strength and reflexes to handle six opponents.
Cue the famous church bell scene at the end of Sinister Six: Eddie crying in the pews who just wants his friend Venom back, and Peter wants a reluctant-to-leave Venom off of him.
I guarantee Kletus Kassady isn't dead-dead at the end of Let There Be Carnage.
This episode has got to be one of my top favorite pieces of MCU material. Top notch.
The character in the main mcu that this reminds me of is Bruce Banner. That dude has lost almost everything. Natasha, Tony, he watched Steve pretty much get away with living an alternate timeline while he is just forced to move on with the loss. They have also been pretty mum about that character. I could easily see some version of Maestro emerging and messing with the multiverse leading to a future imperfect type storyline. I think he has the same or maybe even more motivation to turn bad than Wanda does.
2:30 which is a pretty incredible bit of magic itself.
6:50 that was a great name hahaha
Didn’t Jameson mention Strange by name in the Raimi verse once, could be your version of ‘Sad Strange’ perhaps?
No that's not an MCU film neither is it even related to the MCU like What If...? That film takes place in a completely separate continuity entirely. No connection what so ever.
I watched this episode and knew I needed Rob’s reaction to it haha
I agree with you it’s fun to see things ending on a dark note
There are scenes from the trailer for this episode that aren't in the episode. One he is with party thor, and another Captain Carter. Wonder if just misdirection or glimpse of what is to come.
Also, that has to be the Purple Dimension or Gem at the end. In the comics, you try to use the gem, you basically get sucked into the purple dimension and never come out.
Scenes from future episodes. A team-up is coming.
Rob you're awesome. Every time I'm done watching new Marvel content, my first after thought is "I can't wait to hear Robs take on this."
Inb4 gnome demon is really Mephisto 🔥
Strange begging the watcher to fix what he did really hit hard and as sad as it was I’m excited to see what’s next
The evil laugh isn’t helping us believe you are “a good person.” Lol.
Sad strange/happy strange names gave me some weird Homestar Runner flashbacks and I approve of this
The one thing they love more than a hero is to see a hero fail, fall, die trying. In spite of everything you've done for them, eventually, they will hate you
I absolutely love how they are tying the classic What If...story arc into the modern MCU story telling. I think it's an amazing way to keep such a large audience, it's like respect for the fans of the classics and modernizing the story for the youths.
I can't wait to see Shuma-Gorath live action.
Ding ding ding
Agree 100%, I like when stories end on a bad note.
Could multiverse of madness be like “the one” with jet li? Where strange just goes universe to universe absorbing the other Dr Stranges? To be powerful enough to change the universe?
He was so powerful he asked for the watcher for help
This was the best episode of what if so far
"I know it makes me sound evil....." *Evil laugh*
The absolute best episode so far with this DR Strange episode.
I've enjoyed them all, but this was the best by far.
The dark ending is what made this episode so good, i was watching like wow they really went there
Am i the only one who say wassup back to Rob when the video starts ? Lol
The MCU’s version of time is based on Nietzsche’s concept of the eternal recurrence. Look it up Rob, because I’m wondering what your thoughts are on this.
This explanation really makes sense
He's calling Wanda pretending to be her kids to get him out.
That would actually be crazy!!
Thank you Rob.
For those of you out there, if you watched Doctor Who, this all makes sense. (timey wimey)
Dang dude. You might have to start making thumbnails without any type of spoiler. (Even if it’s just a character in the episode) Just my opinion haha love your content dude. Take care!
The best episode of What If so far! The new spells and variety of creatures we got to see were awesome. Really makes me want to see more Doctor Strange.
Also, was that one tentacled creature the same one we saw from episode one with Captain Carter?
“That dawg don’t bark” - Rob
My fav what if ep so far
Best "What If?" so far.
Thanos reducing the stones to atoms was referencing the children of the atom, the energy expenditure was felt across the entire universe, awakening the X-gene throughout to people who have it. Similar to how the twins got their powers along with majority of the heroes.
Wanda making the deal makes me think house of M
Did ep 3 get skipped?
I heard fixed points in time & moreso than in Loki my first thought was Doctor Who - & how same there they cannot be changed (interesting because of the way that IP handles time similarly & yet differently in places as well on it’s degree of malleability).
That way to make it work by the Ancient One was awesome.
Totally agree more fail would be awesome. Some of the stuff I remember the most from fiction is when things ended on a dark note - eg Old Man Logan, or some of Twilight Zone or The Mist [movie version]; all very different but each in their own way you root for them & either by their actions or sometimes no matter what it ends bad. Injecting some of this into the MCU would be great & help improve the general well something is going to happen but in the end the heroes will win - unless it’s the end of a phase then it’ll be more complicated.
Am I the only one who found this episode really similar to Steins:Gate with the whole unchangeable events, a girl dies no matter what thing?
6:49😂😂😂😂
I was thinking the same. Evil Strange should absorp Okabe to get his Reading Steiner lol to move to beta worldline
I couldn't agree with you more, sometimes it's great to see the bad guy win. However, I am willing to settle for seeing the good guy fail. LOL
What if stories gives the heroes a chance to fail. That's right on point.
I find it interesting that the "fixed points" in some universes aren't the same "fixed points" in others.
Sad Strange: “Watcher, help me!!”
Watcher: “No, I don’t think I will”
Honestly I thought at the beginning when they said his heart they were being literal. So Dr. Strange becomes Iron Man
This episode drew me to tears, the other episodes are good, but this one was great. Truly tragic.
I feel you on ending stuff on a dark note with comics and stuff. Thats why infinity war is my favorite
They could've started with this smart guy's reaction time & then the car from behind.
The editing on this video was funny as fuck. It's getting better!
