What's TRULY amazing is the people will listen to 2 to 3 hours of in depth discussion on a single topic, especially at such a high academic level. People are starving for real information

2/3 of the US population can not read at a 6th grade level. That's according to the department of education. People are starving for something, but it ain't "real information" and "real information" doesn't come from podcasts or youtube videos. That's info-tainment for the illiterate.

Who was it that called Huberman a stray ferret , yes Rich Roll! And so Andrew Huberman did suffer in his formative years and paid his serious dues, and so now he professes science for a living! I definitely trust him although from trying many of his tips over the years, I think some of the hacks seem better on paper than in reality. Like you don’t have to turn all the lights down in order to sleep! Nor drink plain salt water upon waking just to fire up your nervous system, or even the early morning cortisol spike!

Andrew is a true scientist with a pure heart and a clear conscious. That is enough for trust. What makes him worthwhile to listen to is his talent for teaching and the ability to arrange cutting edge science into topics to be digestable for wide audience, while at the same time not loosing out on freaks who want to dive deep. The selection and quality of guests is unheard of.

Katie, I can't believe you did a video on probably my favorite Podcast person and Podcast. His Podcast is about giving to the audience genuinely, not a platform based or driven on his self-interest primarily (like Tim Ferris). I listen to both Tim & Andrew, and I can tell you that my listening rate is double or even triple with Andrew's Podcasts, I specifically carve out time to listen to his podcast. When I am done with Andrew's podcast, I feel like I have gained organic knowledge, awareness, something to think about, and actionable items that literally work in the real world immediately. I am able to curate my habits, my thoughts, and my actions and rate/score myself accurately. I am able to suss out the bull-*s peddled by bro-hacking podcasts. He is also seemingly (and feels) like a genuine man, he does not commodify his listeners and he respects us as listeners and does not take us for granted. Most podcasts feel like it's between them and the guests and we just happened to be listening but they are not "talking to us" they are talking to each other! Most bro podcasts are like this! Not Andrew, he is talking to us, he is with us, and his format is tailored around us his audience, and helping us. You have to admit this is a very self-aware man, on top of being intelligent. As a person who has worked in research, I appreciate that Andrew cites his sources in full, in real-time and he shares his own opinion about other people's work critically and explains to us how to interpret studies and findings and what they may be lacking. I could go on but these are some of the reasons I watch/listen to Andrew. My original reason which I will forever be grateful for is that he helped me change my life, so he has impacted me greatly. That is something no wearable/tracker can help you do, it doesn't talk to you. He helps you to synthesize the inner workings of your brain. Also, I feel soooo much better after talking to him, he is like a dependable friend to his audience. You can trust Andrew!!!

I never leave comments but AH is amazing. At times, however, I find my self wishing I can see visuals or images to go along with his talk. Being a biology professor myself I know the importance of visuals.. But since this is a podcast we're speaking of and not a classroom the lack of visuals is fine, plus the way he explains science is so visual that one doesn't need any. I'm sure he used visuals in his classroom lectures tho😉

I love learning about science especially neuroscience, a field that reveals few practical applications to everyday life.
I appreciate Huberman's podcast presented as it is, primarily because information is based on the highest standard of peer-reviewed research. This is important because there's so much hearsay for decades about what's best for maximizing health.
Huberman is just not that mysterious.
So why don't you have him on your show?
He's revealed his backstory growing up.
His father, a physicist, influenced him to become a scientist who studies the brain.
His parents divorced, which led his mother to be depressed and disconnected from him. His father moved to Europe.
He was into skateboarding and hanging with that crowd when he lacked direction as a teen.
Around 19 years of age, he decided to get serious about his education, and he connected with mentors who encouraged him along the way.
Huberman has said several times that he has depressive tendencies, is an omnivore, takes naps, uses yoga nidra to fall asleep, lifts weights and uses supplements.
He emphasizes scientific research in order to provide evidence for tips he uses himself that could help others. Since he's a professor at a top university Stanford, it's not shocking to me that he wants to let his audience know his podcast is not part of his day job.
He reveals most personal details when he's a guest on Tim Ferriss, Joe Rogan, Lex Fridman, et al...other podcasts besides his own.
A comparable podcaster is Lex Fridman also a PhD. Lex shares a little more personal information in his podcast space.
He interviews various scientists and intellectuals on politics and economics, emphasizing computer science, AI, machine learning and their impact on society.
He also loves dogs and is friends with Huberman. His father is also a scientist.
He includes some personal experiences about Russia (he was born in Moscow) and playing guitar and interest in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, etc.

Regarding whether or not we can trust Huberman, the salient question to ask is whether his interpretation of the scientific literature is trustworthy.
Here we need to be cautious. We never want rely on an authority figure, rather, we want to rely on authoritative data.
More often than not, Huberman presents a conservative view of the scientific literature when recommending applicable behavioral tools.
However, he has recommended some protocols that are not well supported by the literature.
For example, on JRE, he erroneously claims that the herb Turkesterone is equivalent to taking the anabolic steroid Decca, based on one outlier study that clearly had sampling errors. Ecdysteroids have shown no effects on testosterone production in all the literature.
If we were to blindly trust Huberman on his word alone, we’d all be taking Turkestorne with the false assumption that it would be equivalent to taking anabolic steroids. It isn’t, and as a result, we shouldn’t.
It’s our responsibility to be skeptical of any claims made by anyone, including celebrity scientists. Failure to do so can be dangerous for our health and safety.
Long story short, although Huberman’s intentions seem commendable, he’s human, and capable of erroneous conclusions.
Be skeptical, and seek out a broad range of interpretations of the literature.

You make a very good and important point. That may be why he chose to do his own podcast, though, so he could make sure everything was validated with good research before he spoke about it. This is much harder to do in an interview setting.
That being said, I agree 100% that it’s important to do your own follow-up work before jumping right into a new protocol. And honestly, I think he hopes and expects that most of his listeners will do that, especially as he cites and attaches the papers and studies to each episode. He has even had a couple of “corrections” from previous episodes when people have written in to point out an inaccuracy, so he leaves me with the impression that being accurate is a priority for him.

    • @_negentropy_

Well said! I think it’s also important to exercise caution when listening to topics he presents outside of his professional purview. He’s a neurobiology and ophthalmology professor, any discussions outside of those domains are going to be biased toward his interest in them. There was at least one guest episode where the “peer reviewed” studies touted to give the guest credibility were actually published with the peer review commentary and it was not at all favourable toward the study or the field in general, though Huberman and guest presented the information as gospel. I haven’t really been able to trust him since. I spend more time pouring over the studies he mentions to be sure they’re sound than I do listening to the HLP. To be fair, by doing so I’m gaining mastery in important areas of my academic trajectory. But I get little else out of his pod anymore.

Excellent analysis of a podcast I really like and respect. The only thing I would have to correct is that Huberman did talk quite a bit about his life, his childhood and teenage years, his struggles and what led him to pursue his career as a scientist. I believe that interview with Rick Roll (titled Change Your Brain) covers everything one would like to know about him and his formative years.

Outstanding 🎉❤ video on Huberman. I agree with all your commentary here. Thank you for making it. I had the same questions. The key is trust. I listened to one of his podcasts and although some of the science stuff was putting me to sleep I love that he knows how our brains 🧠 work and quickly summarize for us what it all means. ❤ also what is so uncommon is how long they are. This is rare in the podcast space. It's almost as they are designed for you to start listening then take it to the gym. I call it Huber- Head 😊
