    I always comment on these videos when DB is properly interviewed because he actually did change my life. Back in 2000 I was at university doing a Japanese degree and was struggling - at this time internet was still in its infancy and DB was just up and coming. I managed to find the contact details for his agent and emailed, explaining I was struggling to learn all the Japanese Kanji and could Derren (via his agent) suggest any strategies. Although I wasn't expecting a reply I got one - with a load of strategies and book recommendations. Fast forward to now and I'm a Consultant in the NHS with three undergrad degrees, two masters, and in the middle of a clinical doctorate. Genuinely don't think I would have had the skills to do that without the little email he sent, and I'm absolutely certain he won't even remember. For that he'll always be one of my heroes

      @@ImmortalExplorer The two main ones I used and therefore only remember consisted of "You can have an amazing memory" by Dominic O'Brien (great as an audiobook if you drive a lot) and the main one was "Your Memory" by Kenneth Higbee. Bearing in mind this was 20 years ago (welp) the systems used are pretty well known now and I daresay there are more modern texts that perhaps lend themselves better to our current modern life. I think what they gave me - apart from obvious stuff like memory palaces and loci mnemonics etc - was that they forced me to come up with connections to things I wanted to remember (for example to remember that a liver function was around the transamination of amino acids I thought of a Transformer (that old kids toy) drinking a protein shake while taking a med school class) and the ability to make connections is something that has impacted other areas of life, and I personally believe that's the secret sauce these books give: the ability to think abstractly and come up with connections I would have otherwise not have thought of. That's for me, obviously - different people are very different. 🙂

    I'm a mental health recovery worker. And speaking from conversations I've had with people, short, dated goals are massively important. However, to echo what Derren has said, we focus on goals that we, and we alone are in control of. As an example, rather than "by the end of spring I will have a job" we say "by June, I will have applied for 5 jobs". Ultimately, someone else decides whether we get the job or not, but we control our actions that impact on our chances of success.

    Grew up watching Derren and seen his show in Glasgow a short while ago, he dedicated the show to his late father and the message at the end was "Don't just sleep walk through life", basically don't just accept your fate because one day you will regret it... the message deeply resonated with me as I had to be reminded of it at the time and even still now. Derren is a great showman and he has entertained us all for many years and I'm sure that he will continue to do so for many years to come.

    I think what I most like about Derren Brown is his openess and honesty. This is apparent in his performances - he tricks our minds whilst telling us that is what he is doing. He is completely unguarded in this interview and I love him for that. His live entertainments are life-affirming, he is an exceptional human being. I also appreciate this interviewer's peaceful and relaxed pace, giving his subject room to think without distraction. I hadn't seen this channel before. I will subscribe.

      Transparent? Lol. He tells the audience he's reading body language and microexpressions and using subliminal suggestion and a ton of other such nonsense. That's not transparency; that is LYING! Mentalism uses NONE of those things. It's not real! Sorry! It's just not! For some reason, people really want to believe that Derren has these special skills that simply don't exist! They're tricks. They work every time, BECAUSE they are tricks. When Derren says he's "reading" people or planting ideas in someone's mind, it's no different to if an illusionis were to say that they are actually cutting a woman in half, and using magic to put her back together again. Nope. They are using a gimmicked box they didn't even design themselves. Derren is using gimmicks too. And it's not stuff he designed. It's the same old stuff mentalists have been doing since day one! He's being very dishonest and quite harmful though, by making these claims about his methods. It's a shame, because he has great hands and is a very good card magician. What he does on stage on on the TV shows, takes no skill whatsoever. It's all a dead cert from the get-go. He's a fantastic showman, but part of your mind will never be free until you can accept that everything he says about his methods, is just part of the patter. It's a lie. You could be shown how the trick works, and it would work for you too, 100% of the time.

      @ashscott6068 Рік тому +1

      @@njones420 Yes. He outright states that NLP is bullshit. And it is. Didn't stop him pretending to use it. His tricks are tricks, not skills. You could take anyone off the street, explain the trick to them, and they could do it. Mentalism is no different to stage illusiions, except for the fact that mentalists are often happy to dishonestly suggest to the audience that they're using shite like subliminal suggestion, NLP, etc and reading micro-expressions and body language, and all that garbage.
      They are not. Derren is not. They all use the same methods. Stooges (though they all lie about it to the audience), spotters and discrete signalling, gimmicked equipment, etc
      Hell, most of the audience conveniently forget that they ordered online weeks before the show, and now the "mentalist" has a bunch of email and social media accounts, and knows which seats they belong to.
      Deerren even tells a story in an early book - I forget which - about a time when a gimmicked dice fell apart and the electronics fell out, so hee ejust put it back inside, and the dumbass he was doing the trick for believed it was a psychological misdirection.
      Lol. People are so invested in believing that he has these special skills (Which he doesn't, because they don't exist) they they actually get angry at you for telling them the truth. Even though they can go read Derren's books themselves, and have their whole fantasy destroyed.
      He put his "mentalism" nonsense together at the last minute, when Channel 4 planned a one-off magic show with a different magician, and that fell apart for whatever reason.

      I have seen him live two times he blew me away on both occasions.I believe he uses various techniques to do what he does.He is an expert at reading body language working off small tells we all give off in situations which are heightened by feeling uncomfortable when participating as audience members on stage with him.He also is an expert at manipulating situations/conversations by using slight language cues such as repeating him self and using visual cues such as slight head nods when interacting with you to control the situation so that the outcome is favourable to him. He also uses some light hypnosis live on stage to make you more open to his techniques. I say all this because he used me on stage once and it felt like it was an outer body experience it seemed like he was in control of the situation and I was sort of watching what was happening from a 3rd person vantage point. It was all very strange and I felt very euphoric for some time afterwards.

It is almost completely closed off BUT by asking the right questions in the right way, within the space of a few minutes he goes from describing himself as a happy, contented child to a child who cried a lot, who suffered from OCD type twitching and sniffling, who lived in constant shame because of his sexuality etc etc. This is also a great illustrator of how researching your subject properly in advance makes for a really great, well rounded interview. I have always been a fan of Derren Brown and have fond memories of watching his shows on tv when I was younger. Last year, I had the opportunity to see him live in Birmingham and it was an incredible experience. I even had the chance to go on stage with him. His show made me really step back and think outside the box. I listen to your channel regularly and wanted to express my appreciation for the impact it has had on my life.
    Since the age of 13, I have struggled with mental health issues. I was scared of the world and couldn't even go outside to the shops. Over the years, I have experienced both good and bad things that have helped me grow, but it wasn't until recently that I was able to break free from the grip of my mental health struggles. In the last year, my confidence has grown, some times I struggle to belive I am the same person when I look back. However a part of me still felt stuck and I found myself slipping back into old habits and thoughts. I became tired of working for others and being a people-pleaser. Since discovering your channel a month ago, I have started a business with a friend and have learned to say no to people. Your interviews with others and your own words have helped me take the leap to truly live and enjoy my life. My mindset is now (at 26) much more positive and I am learning to see everything in life, both the good and the bad, as opportunities to learn.Thank you for making these podcasts and videos. One of the best interviews I have seen you take.. Derren is amazing, and always thought of him as being other-worldly, based on his TV shows (never read any of his books). But all the way through this conversation, I got a feeling that he was truly invested in your opinions (by way of his little prompts, a noise if any, that he wanted to hear your side of the story, as much as you wanted to hear his).

    Derren is a gem that is so underrated. Thanks for properly interviewing him.
    I love his shows, because of the craft he has; but indeed also because of him educating, because of him letting the audience think. The show leaves you thinking about not only the tricks, but also hints of philosophical questions. Things that matter. It touches. And that's why he has been able to be doing this for such a long while.
    Whenever someone asks about pyramid schemes, I recommed "horse races"; or whenever someone wants to get an intro on placebo, I recommend "fear & faith". And tons of other content he made debunking things. This man truly made "magic shows" interesting again, and keeps them interesting, because it isn't about the magic trick in the end. It's about life & people.
