Appreciate your honesty and this, for me cemented your status as nasi lemak expert (I know you didnt come up with it yourself). A nasi lemak place that is famous for its spiced fried chicken (ayam goreng berempah) cant be considered the best nasi lemak and heres why. There are 2 main components to a good nasi lemak; 1) the sambal 2) the nasi itself. Everything else is fluff, yes, that includes the spiced fried chicken. As a matter of fact, if you go back 30-40 years ago, it didnt even existed back then (or rather people didnt think to pair it with nasi lemak). People nowadays focus on the sambal (if they're not focusing on the side dish and garnishing instead) but never on the rice itself. True nasi lemak color is not white like white rice. Theres a subtle change in color due to coconut milk and herbs used. A lot of 'commercially' produced nasi lemak dont even use coconut milk anymore but rather skimmed milk as substitute (or they might still use coconut milk but a watered down version of it). They might argue its for health benefit but more so its to increase profit and they cut down on the herbs for the same reason. I can say for certain nasi lemak prepared at home will be at least a couple of times better than those commercially produced and if you get the chance (after you come back from the UK for the holidays), take up on those invites. Try a homecooked nasi lemak and see for yourself.
The key to THE Nasi Lemak of course needed to be the nasi (rice) . Appreciate the honest call. Too many got hung up on the bells and whistles of any particular dish and under appreciates its core spirit.

Village Park Damansara Utama Uptown. Their nasi lemak is their signature dish. But were u aware that at Damansara Utama they have the branch of the well known Satay Kajang Haji Samuri there? The best and established name for Satay in Malaysia . And if you're homesick there's also Cor blimey around there. But u did travel 6000 miles for Malaysian food.
Try Nasi Lemak Saleha. Very popular nasi lemak in Kuala Lumpur. Other option, can go to Kampung Baru to try Nasi Lemak Wanjo and Nasi Lemak Pak Hassan. There is food vlogger from UK reviewing the best nasi lemak in Malaysia. His name is Rhys William in DestinasiTV channel. But the channel conducted in Malay language.
i was expecting that review from you darren. just by looking at the rice i can imagine how it would taste like. the rice makes or breaks a nasi lemak. of course the sambal plays a big role also. my best nasi lemak is the one packed in banana leaf, sold for rm2 at the corner stall in the village at the edge of kuching town.

Darren...try those that sells for 0.50 cts a small pack. Last i had those were in Negeri Sembilan in a small food centre by the sea overlooking a kampung jetty. I ate 4 packs that evening....😂😂😂
With all due respect Nasi Lemak Village Park isn't good as it used to be, most tourists will got to Nasi Lemak Village, but for locals, I would reccomend you somewhere around Kampong Baru (Nasi Lemak Wanjo, Nasi Lemak Antarabangsa and Nasi Lemak Pak Hassan)
I'm not suggesting it is the best, and literally hundreds of people recommended it to me in these comments. I was at Nasi Lemak Wanjo yesterday, watch an upcoming video for that.
Village Park is more of a posh version of Nasi Lemak, you should try the humble version as originally nasi lemak is a cheap n accessible food for even ppl who lives in the suburbs, hence it's all about that anchovies n sambal chili with fragrant rice n hard boil egg to keeps them going. All those fancy fried-chicken add ons are simply upgrade versions as the more nasi lemak become more accessible n commercialise. I'm a bit shocked you're in town recently. If you're still around. Do checkout this place for humble nasi lemak which they used to sell at RM0.50 per pack, but that was more than decade ago before the inflation surge over the years. Now it should still priced around RM1.50 per pack n usually one pack is never enough!!! Google and lookup for this "Nasi Lemak Panas at 222". It's actually a street of food stalls and few nasi lemak suppliers here all consistently serves such humble nasi lemak-or shud i call it the most basic n the essence of a nasi lemak. There's few stalls but u can try both n see which you prefer, if you ask me i love all of them. Worth a try if you're still around.
I agree with u abt the chicken... Roadside stalls r malay nasi lemak... Village Park's nasi lemak, esp the sambal is a modified kind, with pronounced lemongrass, ginger n garlic taste, whereas all these 3 spices are not used in the original malay version...
Depends on your taste bud. I've tried Nasi Lemak over there and to say the best in Malaysia is way way over rated coz I guess, the roadside nasi lemak (rm1.50-rm2) are better if not the best.
You are absolutely right darren.to me nasi lemak is nasi that you can taste the coconut milk on it. Been to a lot of place that claim they have the best nasi lemak but the nasi taste bland.more like im eating nasi putih with ayam goreng and sambal. Thats it
I suspected that the rice wasn't cooked with coconut milk the moment I saw it, until you confirmed it later in the video. The colour of the rice gave it out. Anyway, if it wasn't cooked with coconut milk...it isn't nasi lemak. Personally I'd say, the main ingredient that makes a nasi lemak is the coconut fragrant rice and the sambal. The rest are bonus.
Have you tried Madam Kwan's Nasi Lemak? It has a few branches in most famous shopping malls like KLCC Suria, Midvalley, Pavillion etc. It's a bit pricey though.
Haha told you Village Park is overrated. I used to work in one of the office blocks next door. Never liked the place. Don't know what all the hype is about. Anyways, glad you enjoyed your lunch Darren. Best wishes.
Holler me if you want the taste of Nasi Lemak Mambau. The sambal is exquisite with herb and spices chicken fried to perfection. Located in Seremban 2 and you'll crave for more.
I'm gonna stick with roadside stalls that sell Nasi Lemak of their own Malaysia version, eaten by all group of the communities, race, age & occupation. There you'll taste what is all about Malaysia's Nasi Lemak ✌
I haven't taste Nasi lemak village park for years but last time I think it was okay maybe you are not lucky. There are two types of Nasi lemak. Hot nasi lemak like village park and other restaurants. It pro are it is tasty when it is hot and usually we can choose the companion food. Its con are less fragrant that usually come from banana leaves. The other type of Nasi lemak, is the ones that being wrap with banana leaves. It smell good and it help with your appetite. Both type has its merit and it is better to learn how to make it yourself because it is such a good food and you can eat it with lot of other foods.
My moms nasi lemak are the most delicious one in the world (for me.. 😁)..despite the spiciness of the sambal..there's also sweetness in it..unlike nasi lemak stall in front of my house..the taste a bit salty to me.. 😅 but i can't say it out loud because that makcik (aunty) is my moms childhood neighbour.. 😂
Best nasi lemak for me is in ttdi. Search for roadside stall near the public library there, an old couple sells them but must be there before 9 before it sells out. They call it 'nasi lemak belakang sekolah agama' Combination of a dash of chicken curry gravy on top of sambal sotong, fuuiiiishhh

KahSing82 thanks I’ll add it to my list of places to check out!
I agree with u abt the chicken...
Roadside stalls r malay nasi lemak...
Village Park's nasi lemak, esp the sambal is a modified kind, with pronounced lemongrass, ginger n garlic taste, whereas all these 3 spices are not used in the original malay version...
literally u are malaysian nasi lemak expert :)
hakim ibrahim hadiruddin hah not quite but I’m getting there
Depends on your taste bud.
Thats it
Yes, it was a little dry, and had no taste to it, other than that the chicken and sambal was good!
Anthony Wong yes, didn’t have much of a taste to it but thankfully the sambal was actually good
Have you tried Madam Kwan's Nasi Lemak? It has a few branches in most famous shopping malls like KLCC Suria, Midvalley, Pavillion etc. It's a bit pricey though.
Haha told you Village Park is overrated. I used to work in one of the office blocks next door. Never liked the place. Don't know what all the hype is about. Anyways, glad you enjoyed your lunch Darren. Best wishes.
Try Ali Muthi & Ah Hock nasi lemak either at Oasis Ara Damansara branch. You will not be disappointed. Number 1 contender in my list.
Roadside nasi lemak is the best. Maybe you should go to Kampung Baru, find stall that sells nasi lemak for breakfast.
Nicky have been and agree about roadside.
Holler me if you want the taste of Nasi Lemak Mambau. The sambal is exquisite with herb and spices chicken fried to perfection. Located in Seremban 2 and you'll crave for more.
Sounds good, sadly I'm leaving tomorrow :(
@@remotedarren anytime you come back to Malaysia
U come to Penang, u cari nasi lemack pandan mama.. u must try before u sleep forever... Trust me..
You are nasi lemak hunters!!! Nice
Haha, I'll hunt down any Malaysian food!
I'm gonna stick with roadside stalls that sell Nasi Lemak of their own Malaysia version, eaten by all group of the communities, race, age & occupation. There you'll taste what is all about Malaysia's Nasi Lemak ✌
Yong Tze Min yes roadside is better, been to a few but the chicken here was the best I’ve had.
Happy to see you happy, how about you trying to cook Nasi lemak by yourself.
To me personally village parks nasi lemak is just so so. They're the modern nasi lemak as opposed to traditional one, taste wise anyway
you need to try nasi lemak royale in kedah.. you’ll no regret sirr..✊🏻

They call it 'nasi lemak belakang sekolah agama'
Combination of a dash of chicken curry gravy on top of sambal sotong, fuuiiiishhh
You shud go to Kampong Baru area there is a popular stall serving nasi lemak.
