New and Strange Seismic Swarm and Lava Barriers to Protect Grindavik are in the Making
Вставка

- It's a race against the clock to build fortifications to protect Grindvík, but when they are ready, we can probably say that everything that can be done has been done. The project comes with a hefty price tag or somewhere around 5 Billion ISK to protect 150 Billons's worth of houses and infrastructure. I am however starting this video with todays earthquake swarm that was a bit strange. The MET office spoke about them as triggered from tension due to the magma intrusions lately, but tonight, Prof. Ármann Höskuldsson spoke about the need to make lava barriers in Hafnarfjörður to protect the metropolitan area from the Krísuvík volcanic system. That sounds like a strong statement to me that indicates where the volcano/rifting events might be up for next, and I will cover that's story of course. I have all the footage to do so already.

Thank you for visiting the Just Icelandic Channel.
Greetings from Iceland. Gylfi
If I'm next to my device and "Just Icelandic" pops up, that's an immediate click.😊
Yep! Asap click when Gylfi have posted! ✨🙌🏼
Me too!👍🏻😊
Me as well!
Thanks all of you :) Nice to hear :)
Agreed
"Just Icelandic" the very BEST of best about Iceland. In my humble opinion.
Try my best, but the best has yet to come :) and thanks a ton, appreciated
I just love your updates! You don't try to make the problems there seem more than they are. You present the current situation in such a calm and professional manner, but you don't "sugar coat" it either. I agree with you, something is going to happen, but when, is always the question, isn't it?
Thank you. And I hope you have a wonderful New Year in 2024! 🎉🎉
I just love the sound of your voice, and the melodic accent you use in your videos. I watch a few other iceland creators, but only your videos actually get watched as soon as I can see them. You have a way of cutting through all the details and sharing what I want to hear. :) You always make me feel like you've just greeted me like an old friend, invited me in out of the cold, and given me undivided attention. I don't know what it is, but I'm glad I discovered your channel. Definitely #1 when it comes to Iceland creators, top ten if you add in all of my other genres I watch. :)
He has a wonderful voice, definitely!! 🥰👍
Greetings from Shetland! Thank you so much for your continued updates 🙏
Always nice to see a person from next door. Greetings from the Faroe Islands.
Thanks and greetings to Shetland :)
Greetings to our good friend in the Faroe Islands
Lots o wis in Shaetland big fans. ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you, Just Icelandic. These videos are hard to watch, but I so appreciate that I found you back when it all started up again back in 2021. I think of all the people who have been forced to leave their homes. And those that were re-settled from when the island was evacuated now forced out a second time. I know this is your daily life, intellectually, but emotionally, it’s difficult. All I can do is watch and hope and pray….
A friend from the US Northeast wishing you all the very best possible outcomes. 🌋
The geothermal drones should do a lot of scouting now, looking for hot spots to help predict where the fissures will open when paired with seismometers and GPS measurements!
I have very little knowledge of the effectiveness of those drones, would they be able to ‘see’ far enough into the earth, rocks, etc to be able to provide sufficient additional data to inform predictions. Than what the seismometers and gps already do… ( not challenging you, this is a genuine question 😊).
@@freebirdh604 I want to know all that, too! From what I have seen so far, my guess is surface temperatures only, but when you see a bunch of hot spots in an area that otherwise appears completely normal, I would definitely hesitate before getting physically close!
@@freebirdh604 Lidar in my experience can penetrate up to 5m depending on ground type though usually used at 2m depth so I'm sure that Hi Tech Thermal Cams can penetrate several times that.
@@freebirdh604I don't think these cameras penetrate the ground at all, they just read surface temperature, which will be higher of course if more heat is warming it up from underneath.
That's not a sure way to predict it. Magma underground is very well insulated and heat takes years or decades to reach the surface.
Fissure eruptions occur fast, in a matter of hours or even minutes, so you have even the same chance of spotting the opening with a cheaper, visible light drone.
Thanks for the update as always, stay safe mate ❤
Thank you, I will
Thank you for the update. I hope they get the berm defense up for grindavik before another eruption. Happy New year. Prayers for you all
I have to wonder if they're going to put up the berm, and then have the eruption within the perimeter. That would be so tragic, but it is a possible outcome, I'd think!?
Happy New year to you too :) we remain hopeful
To the point, professional and short. I like these updates a lot. Thank you!
Glad to hear👍
Thank you for your update. Your drone footage is outstanding, such a beautiful country 🙏
My pleasure 😊
Thanks for the usual excellent update, and happy new yar to you Gylfi.
Happy New year and thanks :)
Best wishes for the safety of all. Thank you for your calm and helpful updates.
Thank you kindly :) appreciated :)
Iceland is so beautiful. Blessings to all who live there. 😊❤
Blessings to you from Iceland😊❤
Thank you for the update.
Welcome :)
Thank you for the update Gylfi.
Welcome :)
Thanks for the update, Gylfi. I love your balanced, informative reports, not just from the geological point of view but also (and more importantly) regarding the impact on life in Grindavik now and in the future - it’s something that can be easily overlooked in all the excitement of eruptions. Also lovely to hear the placenames being pronounced by a native Icelandic speaker 😊And the drone footage is spectacular! Stay safe!
😊 thanks a ton and welcome
Hello, Thank you so much for the very informative videos you make. - I am from Norway, but the people in Norway and Iceland we have the same roots. I love Iceland !!! Best greetings and peace and love from Norway. ☮🕊☮❤❤❤
❤ thank you very much and greetings to our old home country :)
Idea also when techtonic plate movement starts, it tends to flow along the plate boundary like water in a river. It’s not too surprising that you are now seeing possible action to the N NE from Grindavik along the boundary and waking up some of the hotspots that brings magma to the surface!
It’s great that they are able to protect Grindavik with the barriers bc of how fast the lava moves probably due to silica poor lava. If the lava mixes with salt water then toxic gases will be released. I hope the town does recover.
Your updates are very much appreciated. Looking forward to your next update.
Thanks, once again Gylfi for your clear and non-hyperbolic explanation of developments, combined with your beautiful and meticulously collected stock footage.
😊 thanks a ton and welcome
Fabulous drone footage ❤
Thanks a ton :)
Hi Gylfi, Thanks for the update and the beautiful images, I have never seen the Blue Lagoon from that perspective before 👀Stay safe n well on the Volcanic Island ICELAND. TFS, GB :)
😊 thanks a ton and welcome
Thanks so much for the Blog!
I find the background information very helpful.
Hopefully the situation will calm for the Citizens of Grindavik and they can look forward to new year!
Take care.
Glad it was helpful!
Good morning Gylfi,
Thanks for the update.
It looks like it’s going to be a hot year in iceland and I read this could go on for some years. Let’s hope for the best.
I remember the eruption in 1973 very well. Very impressive and frightening images on the news then.
Winter is finally coming to the Netherlands; it’s getting colder already. What we now call winter would probably be called mild in Iceland. It was much colder and there was much more snow when I was young. I remember -17°C where I lived back then in the southeast of the country.
Stay sage
Thanks for sharing and greetings to the Netherlands😊
For me it felt like a wonder to hear that the eruption suddenly stopped before christmas. So happy that Grindavik is still there! All fingers crossed that it will remain and people will keep their homes!
Thank you very much and greetings from Iceland
Thank you for another great update video.
Lets hope that Grindavik will be safe now that they have started to build a defence wall.
I'd like to wish you a Happy New Year Gylfi and I'll be looking forward to the next video.
Thanks and a Happy New Year to you 👍
Thanks so much for the latest non-hyped and objective update! Take care, and stay safe!
Thanks :) I will
It may be expensive to build a berm now, but its a investment for the future, I guess. If I understood it correctly, we can expect volcanic activity on the Reykjanes peninsula for the next 200 years - so its most likely not the last berm that needs to be build.
Sure, its not a perfect protection, but the best we can do for now. At the end... the volcanos always win.
Thank you for a great explanation of the current situation! Hoping to see an infrared drone flight over the recent lava fields assuming authorities have lifted flight restrictions.
Will be soon :)
Thanks so much, I appreciate the update! As always - great video, very beautiful.
Thanks and welcome :)
So glad your back!
Thanks :)
thanks for the update gylfi
wonderful drone video work
Thanks 👍
Happy new year Gylfi 🎉❤ I hope this year will bring you great happiness 🥰 thank you for all your efforts to make these videos
Happy new year to you too 🎉❤ and greetings from the volcano island
Great update, thank you
Thanks :)
As others before me have said ...thank you for these interesting and informative videos. You have a very calming way of explaining the very serious situation.
So nice of you and greetings from the north :)
Thanks, Gylfi.
Welcome
So many different things happening already this year. I really hope the berm at Grindavik is either not needed or does its job properly when the time comes. I'm trying to imagine the scale of berm needed to protect Reykjavik, but with how quickly the ones at the power plant and Blue Lagoon went up, and now this one I think your planning people will not see it as a difficult task.
What do you think would happen to the lake near the new swarm and uplift should the red stuff pop up close to it? It looks so calm and beautiful there like many parts of Scotland and it would be shame if it was destroyed.
My thanks as always Gylfi 💜🌋🦄
Take care, Gylfi!
Thanks, I will for sure :)
Thank you for the updates, I love the way you explain what's going on. Stay safe.. ✌️
Much appreciated
Very many thanks once again! I hope the disturbances at Krisuvik won't affect the capital. At the tender age of 10 (first visit to Iceland with my family) it did seem odd that the capital city should be a place called 'Reykjavik' i.e. 'smoking creek', even if the 'smoke' was vapour from the hot springs and vents that give the modern city its hot water and other benefits.
It must be very trying for the inhabitants of Grindavik, and also for the people who work at the Blue Lagoon and the power plant - and for those whom the power plant supplies with electricity. I really do hope for an early resolution even if it is an eruption to put an end to this enervating and apparently never-ending waiting game.
Thanks a lot for sharing this looks a bit better now but hard to say though, and welcome back to Iceland :)
Fantastic video..great report. Thanks a bunch.
Always welcome :)
I wait for your updates over the others!!
Thanks, do my best to deserve it :)
Thanks again Gylfi. I like your approach to communicating with us. For me it is a winning formula and some of my favorite edutainment. 🙂
Great to hear, I need to make this simple for me, thats how I can keep things simple for you all, there are others who do the full science versions way better than me than I'm capable of, and I can't always understand them :) although they have excellent information :) so simple is and will always be my way :)
Beautiful footage Gylfi, love the horses too. Stay safe , looking forward to your next video.
Thank you, I will
You do such an awesome job on your videos. Happy New Year!! Wishing you & the town the best!!! ❤❤❤❤
Happy New Year ❤ to you
'May you live in interesting times...' Seems to be an understatement living on Iceland
😊
Hi,happy new Year and thanks for this update.Greetings from Brunsvik
Greetings to Brunsvik :)
Exemplary use of a drone. So satisfying and informative. Thanks!
More to come!
Hope everyone stays safe throughout this ordeal.
Thank you, appreciated...
those sheep were like "He's here again with the drone...not moving" and the one to the side was ...I wasn't here last ime I'm out of here....strange that they sit on top of the mountain though
Thankyou for the update, I like that you can say what you think about the iceland "underground",
You have a superb record of drone footage for future viewing, It's going to be interesting to compare the two.
Thanks a ton :)
Happy new year and continued thanks for your videos. :)
Happy new year from Iceland :)
His accent reminds me of Max Von Sydow. Old actor. Passed recently. He did Ingmar Bergman movies. Nice that someone else is covering Grindavik.
Thanks :) and welcome :)
I'd been waiting for your upload! Really pleased to get your perspective. You seem to be so familiar with the geology it's very interesting.
I just try to keep this very simple to make my footage more fun to watch :) and it seems to work :) and thanks 😀
Superb aerial photography. Such a stunning landscape! Happy New Year and greetings from Scotland.
Many thanks!
Happy New Year and Greetings from the Netherlands. Great drone footage!
Happy new year to you :)
It’s always good to hear from you Gylfi. Happy New Year.
Happy new year!
Love your videos.....thank you❤
Thanks a ton ❤
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Great videos. Love Iceland. Will be back soon! Greetings from Norway
Welcome back!
Beautiful imagery!
Many thanks!
I find it interesting that most of the GPS stations on the west side of Grindavik more or less stopped their uplift a day or two ago. And today we got the swarm. Like you say, they are not directly connected, but it's still curious.
Happy 2024. From Colin😀
👍 Happy New Year Colin :)
I loved seeing the Icelandic Horses at the end. Magnificent creatures! Thank you for the update. I'm glad you are all safe for now. I do have questions about the crack/fissure that opened up in the town of Grindavik though. Just because lava escaped through a different fissure how do they know if the one that opened up in town is dormant?
Hi Gylfi, Just Icelandic is always my first port of call for updates! 😊
Good to know😊 always welcome 😊
I am delayed while watching your updates, but it is still worth it even if the next eruption happened meanwhile, today morning 14.01.2024. So sad to see the youngest new fissure which opened around lunch time at the side of the houses of Grindavik. I follow up specially as I visited Island for my first time in June 2023 and drove through Grindavik about a dozen times. It might be fascinating to see volcanoes, but not people losing their home or become danger for their lives.
Thank you for the updates. Be careful always!
Thanks a ton
Happy New Year, Gylfi. In addition to your beautiful videos of IceIandic landscapes, I do appreciate your empathetic comments on the human impacts of the ongoing volcanic and seismic events in Iceland.
Happy New Year, to you :)

Happy New Year Gylfi. Thanks for the latest update on the situation on Reykjanes Peninsula.
Happy new year!

best regards from the volcano island of La Palma....
Thanks and greetings to La Palma :)
Appreciate you teaching me to pronounce the names!
Any time!
Rather unscientific but the fissure North of Grindavik seemed almost like a safety valve, in that the magma did not need to find a single weak spot but found 3.5 km of it in one go to let it all out out of reach. Hopefully the Gods will continue to favour the inhabitants of this town.
Welcome
Interesting, as allways
Glad you enjoyed it
Can tectonics and seismic events be Strange for Icelandic people??? 🤷🏼♂️
Wish to go there some day!
Sorry to be late, But these days forensics steal my time🫣
Science Rules💯
Welcome to Iceland :)
really interesting news! always look forward to your updates! greetings from germany!
Thanks for watching!
Greate thanks for all you talking about your home land.Wish you all a better 2024 ,what ever cames your people know what to do best.
Happy new year 👍
I was surprised that the cooling of lava is so slow.
With the eruption in La Palma, they found it unfeasible to build dikes there.
I believe in the actions of Iceland.
I think this might work out, and this whole scenario might be heading east now according to the latest earthquakes trends
👍🙏>>>💚~~~ Thank You for the update
Welcome 👍
Many thanks and best regards 👍🏼
Many thanks!
thanks for making this content.
My pleasure!
Thank you
You're welcome
Thanks.
You're welcome
Than you Gylfi
Always welcome :)
How was your new year Gylfi?
Work, work, work :) this eruption took 2 months of my life so I didn't finish some important projects, but catching up little by little now, until the next eruption starts :)
Happy new year. God bless you all
Thank you and God bless
Hope they work for yall
We remain hopeful, nothing else to do :)
@@JustIcelandic Many hope with you and pray
Are you planning a video or a part of a video about the lava barriers? I cannot imagine their material or looks. Thanks.
yes , hoping to go to Grindavik soon....
Thanks as always Gylfi great update. As my holiday draws ever closer I've been trying to find a drone map showing updated areas of places i can fly when im there. We have the excellent Drone Assist app. Is there anything like that there i can reference for flying legally ?
Stay safe buddy 🙏
Welcome to Iceland, those are the restrictions plus the national parks: www.dji.com/global/flysafe/geo-map and have fun here :) it's easy :)
@JustIcelandic thank you Gylfi. That's extremely helpful. I can't wait to spend my Birthday there in such a Beautiful place 😊
❤❤❤
Happy new year!
Wasn't expecting a seismic swarm in that area.
Iceland is full of surprises :)
Let's hope that the government has the back of the people of Grindavik and supports all of the people as always stay safe and have a plan 👍 good hunting Gylfi 😊
😊 thanks, we might have elections soon, the government is barely hanging in there so the helps the people in Grindavík, the politicians are already buying them selves some votes :)
It seems like a of icelandics. Are doing well staying strong. Pray my friends.
At least it seems like you have great scienstic. I pray that there will no loss of life. My prayer and thought are with you all
There sure is a lot activity all around the world?
Lots of tectonic plate movement all over the world?
God 🙏 willing it will not be a Catastrophic
Very useful video, hopefully the volcanic system will have a little rest and the people of Grindavik and get their lives back!
I hope so too! and welcome
Seems to me like the tectonic plate gap is 'locked'( strongly solidified & not melting/cracking up) under Iceland while the gap is getting more active & hotter. It looks like the magma is being funneled into systems down the line thru 'weaker' & open dykes. And it also seems to be coming from the other end (the hotspot) too. Iceland is gonna have a serious lava problem when they meet in the middle😮
2024 will be even more interesting then 2023....
Your pretty much summerized the current situation right . I'm watching too from New Mexico , USA .
Love your updates, the grey fishing boats in the harbour they look really short and stubby what do they fish for does anyone know?
They do cod fishing mostly :)
@@JustIcelandic Thanks for the update saw them in Lofoten over the summer and was confused as to what they fished for. They sort of looked like a British prawn boat, but there seemed to be a lot of them. Fishing for Cod makes a lot more sense. Stopped for lunch in Grindvik a few years ago a bit of a shame to see what is happening to it, but as a former geologist, it is fascinating to watch a continent being built in real time.
