  • The Kleifarvatn earthquakes were no surprise but todays earthquake swarm just by the Blue Lagoon is a bit more unusual. It seems when I'm uploading this at 19:00G GMT that they might be over, but I know this area quite well, and I will cover this with high quality footage in my next update. I am however working on my trip to the Reykjanes peninsula now and will be away for 3 days or so this time.

    TY Gylfi, I'm no volcanologist, but I do understand pattern recognition (MIL/LEO Analyst retired). It seems to appear that each eruption is walking semi northwesterly direction, and at its present sequences of eruptions, it will reach NW shoreline by 2031. The good part about Iceland is they're proactive, they monitor via cams, sensors & sniffers, they've learned to block, guide, and channel lava. Just some old work habits in analyzing patterns of events, but for now, I think I'll join you for a few shots of whiskey from afar (NW Arizona, USA). Take care, Gylfi, and your community of followers. God bless you all!

    As a side note: a few years after the 2000 earthquake that caused the shrinkage of Kleifarvatn, the Icelandic crime novelist Arnaldur Indriðason wrote a murder mystery that ranged widely in time, but the prime piece of evidence revealing the crime surfaced as a result of that drainage event. It was titled "Kleifarvatn" in Icelandic, while the English translation was "The Draining Lake." The main detective in Arnaldur's series of novels, Detective Erlendur Sveinsson, is also featured in a movie based on another Arndaldur novel, which in English is called "Jar City", and a full-length video of that movie is available for watching elsewhere on UA-cam (ua-cam.com/video/9GzUAHbblIE/v-deo.html).

    Thanks so much for yet another highly informative and beautifully illustrated video! My only complaint is that ... your photography shows such incredible beauty on the landscape, that I wind up wishing I could live there! (But realistically, at my age, moving is not really possible ... I have GREAT-grandchildren!). Still, Iceland is such an incredibly beautiful country, I can see, and I do so hope that whatever volcanic activity that is to occur remains in the countryside, and doesn't seriously impact Grindavik, the Blue Lagoon, or any other critically important locales. 😍

    Thank you. Very interesting information on the deeper plumbing in the peninsula. This looks like it will not stop any time soon. the Blue Lagoon and the power plant seem to be sitting on stronger ground, that moves more or less up and down as a block. As long as there are no cracks, there will be enough time for evacuation, I think.

    Today the seemingly endless swarms of micro earthquakes went on around Mount Thorbjörn and the Blue Lagoon. As if the entire island is squeaking like a rusty old door hinge on being moved.
    What the heck is going on down there?

      @JustIcelandic  3 місяці тому +2

      I really appreciate your metaphors about Iceland like ‘heartbeat’ and ‘breathing’. I visited Þingvallavatn last November. I had the whole lake to myself as I sat quietly on a rock just connecting with nature. I could feel the gentle activity happening under me. It truly feels alive. I cannot fully explain the feeling I have when I’m there, just that I can’t wait to go back. ❤

    Your video style is a beautiful unique mix of good information fed by actually good personal journalism and research, helpful graphics, beautiful film and photography, and storytelling.
    I especially enjoy your storytelling because it is imaginative in terms of how you look at your country as a living, breathing entity; and as you are so connected to it, it is deeply personal. This was especially evident in some of those first Grindavik disaster videos that you did, where your video was the one that most made me understand and feel the impact of it.
    Your personal sense of humor just adds to the personality. Please keep doing what you do. I'd love to see that full length documentary in this style some day :D

    Lake Askja reminds me more and more of Taupō in the middle of New Zealand's North Island. An old caldera partially filled with water, with excellent trout fishing. Fingers crossed Askja does what Taupō did last year; after a few earthquakes, some increased uplift, and even a little tsunami (in the lake!), it went back to sleep

  • @hreader
    @hreader 3 місяці тому +6

    Very many thanks again for your update. I visited Askja in 1973 as part of an organised camping tour which included a descent into the Viti crater. Whilst there I lay down on the ground for a better view of some pretty (and sharp-pointed) sulphur crystals - and a few hours later discovered a few tiny holes in my anorak, presumably from acid gas. Very magnificent scenery of course - all yellows, reds, greys and blacks - and not a blade of grass or even a clump of moss in sight. Maybe this has changed by now with global heating?
    Do you know when it'll be possible to visit the new volcano, preferably while it's erupting?

    • @JustIcelandic
      @JustIcelandic  3 місяці тому +1

      I'm actually not sure but reg. the volcano, it's still no access, I thinks it's 50/50 if it opens this summer, I think it's going to erupt for a while longer but there are however "unofficial ways" to get there....

    Interesting about the lake fishing. We couldn't find any information on lake and river fishing when in Iceland a couple of years ago saw 2 people trout fishing a river but nothing elsewhere. Will remember this forcfuture visit.

    We were stationed at Keflavik NAS (now the airport) from the end of December 1980 to the end of December 1982, my wife was in Supply under the IDF and I was in the 57th FIS as a missile systems maintainer. My first shop was an old Butler building on Patterson just outside the base and then our new shop was just off of the F-4 Alert hangars via a taxiway. When we left construction of the F-15 structures was underway, building the bases for the structures and the taxiways to them. Our youngest son of 3 was born in the Navy hospital on base in October 1981. We lived in the "tree housing" in 3 Birch on the 1st floor. I used to fish all the time in the bay on the stone docks in Keflavik and I would also buy fish from the boats when they came in. While we were still working out of Patterson we had an approx 3 quake but it wasn't much more than a feeling of vibration under our feet.

    Good evening Gylfi,
    Has spring already arrived in Iceland?
    Totally different plumbing you have. We only have pipelines to and in my city for transport of hot water, rest heat from the power plant, to the homes for heating and heating the tap/shower water.
    Thanks for the new info.
    Stay safe.

    I am glad you pointed out that the fish in the lake are okay to eat despite the earthquakes. This Kleifarvartn Lake is large so it will not change quickly. The small lake near Askja that you mentioned in a previous video is a different story, too full of chemicals from the volcanic eruptions there.

      Yes Víti is a chemical pool and fish could never survive in Askja :)

    • @JustIcelandic
      @JustIcelandic  3 місяці тому +1

      Not that I know of, "Vatn" is water, also lake, but "Kleif" is an old description of some kind of feature in the nature that is hard to figure out :) But it might be that some Icelanders could correct me here :)

    If the magma comes from different sources and fills the magma chamber, would it not mix in the chamber and obscure the source? Thanks for your wonderful channel and wit… both are so very much needed.

    Stunning scenery again! What do I know as I am not a professional geologist, but based on the bathymetric maps of the Atlantic Ocean it has a central fissure traversed by innumerable cross-fissures. The same is true of the other generative fissures around the Earth. In the case of Iceland the course of the continuing fissure is roughly known and is responsible for pushing apart the Americas from Europe, as marked by your famous footbridge. Could the magma under this central fissure under the spine of the Reykjanes be being first pumped up and then pushed out to through the transverse cross fissures represented by the Eldorp craters, the Sundhnukar, Krisuvik systems etc., not from the south (SSW) but from the NNE? These cross-fissures would extend across both sides of the central fissure though much of the recent Reykjanes activity is on the grindavik side rather than the Reykjavik side. This would explain how all the systems in this area are linked to the continuing but crustal section of the Mid-Atlantic ridge, with volcanic an earthquake activity passing from one system to another in waves.
