Volcano Watch 2024: Lava Reaches Grindavík, Claims First Homes
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 вер 2024
- After a series of small earthquakes starting around 03:00 Sunday morning, an eruption began in the Reykjanes peninsula just before 08:00 just north of the town of Grindavík. By that point all the people residing in the town, numbering about 200 in about 80 homes, had been evacuated.
The erupting fissure was soon estimated to be 900 to 1,000 metres in length, situated just 450 metres from the nearest building in Grindavík. Lava has flowed over the main road to Grindavík and along the protective walls erected in the area. The eruption is smaller than that which began on Dec. 18 at Sundhnúkagígar.
A second fissure then began erupting around 12:30, just outside the town limits. Lava from that fissure moved rapidly toward houses in the Hópsshverfii neighbourhood. By 15:00 the lava claimed the first house, a newly built single family home on Efrahóp street.
At around 16:00, Met office geophysicist Benedikt Ófeigsson reported that land deformations and seismic activity around and inside Grindavík appeared to have settled. It remains too early to make predictions about the longevity of the eruption, however.
Dozens of sheep and several family pets are believed to be trapped in Grindavík, RÚV reported. The Animal Protection Association of Iceland is calling on search and rescue teams to remove them from the town, if possible. All animals had been evacuated from Grindavík in the days following the Nov. 10, 2023, evacuation of the town, however some residents had decided in recent weeks to bring animals back into town.

My heart goes out to the people of Grindavík and all Icelanders. No matter the outcome, may you thrive & flourish. ❤❤
Why if someone build there home on a volcano 🌋. Can we say with a straight face that was a smart investment. You make your own bed and lay in it.
@@davewhite3629grow a heart
@@davewhite3629just be quiet.
davewhite3629 - I bet you hate on people who get hit by a car or develop an illness. Do you blame women for being attacked? I hope you never need compassion from fellow humans.
@@davewhite3629Wow what a constructive comment. Such a good human being. (Sarcasm)
My heart goes out to the people losing everything to the volcano. So glad that people made it out safely.
I feel for the people of Grindavik and all Icelanders , So sad to lose your homes and town. I wish better things for your futures.
Thanks for the coverage. Peace and safety to the folks affected. Good luck.
Someone give that reporter a warm hat please!
I was thinking the same. He looks absolutely frozen. I think he needs a scarf and a hot water bottle too.
Glad everyone got out safely. Hope everyone remains safe. Icelanders will rally to help and rebuild as always but I feel for the residents of Grindavik. Our thoughts are with you all
240 sheep need to be rescued in barn in Grindavik.
It is so terrible! I wish the residents of Grindavik a lot of strength.
I am so worried for Iceland. Please stay safe, and I hope you recover quickly.
This isn't something unusual for Iceland. People are safe, they have been evacuated long ago. Also damages so far are also quite low, for example in La Palma in 2021 over 3000 buildings were destroyed.
@@ligametisnot really no. They were evacuated around 3am the morning of the current eruption
@@scrappydoo7887 it is not like it erupted in the middle of a town. Lava after weeks still really hasn't reached it.
@@ligametis I know
Devastating to watch the lava encroach upon the houses, and terrible that Grindavick town appears to be completely undermined by crevasses and channels where the magma might flow onward. Wishing everyone safe, especially those still working on the berms
Can only imagine how awful it is for these poor souls to watch their homes and neighborhoods going up in smoke.
Our prayers that everyone is safe!
prayers do nothing, religious people are so stupid.
I loved watching the earlier three rift zone eruptions in Iceland. But, like the eruption in La Palma was, this one is horrible. Of course I am glad that the people and animals of Grindavík got to safety, and that people had time to rescue their most valuable possessions, but it is terrible that some will lose their homes.
Apparently, there are still some animals trapped as some folks had moved back and taken them back with them! It claims this in the written information notes attached to this video.😢
@@ange5673 If true, I'm sorry to learn that. How foolish to move critters back into what was clearly a dangerous area.
I've been to Grindavik several times on my visits to Iceland. It's a wonderful small town and it saddens me greatly to see it so impacted. Crossing my fingers and wishing the people of Grindavik the best in the coming days from the US.
Hey Jon~ I first saw you with your video of November 14, 2023, when you went back into Grindavik with your parents. I so appreciated they let you film to show us what was happening. I found it compelling and harrowing. Seeing your father on a dead-run and so focused was intense and difficult. Seeing you all racing against time was overwhelming. I hope your parents are well. There’s nothing I can do or say. I am in the US northeast. I woke up to Shawn Willsey’s drone flyover and saw live the fissure closest to Grindavik open up and expand in just a few minutes. I am heartbroken for all of beautiful Iceland and her people - and especially those of Grindavik. I hope and pray this ends soonest, the multitude of issues are dealt with creatively and quickly, and all is well. A lot to ask? Maybe, but I am still wanting it all. You all are in my thoughts and prayers and have been since 2021. Godspeed…. 🌅
Condolences to all for their losses. Emergency workers please be safe.
A brave report from Jon as he sees the horrible threat to his parents' house has now arrived. Best wishes to all affected, and special thanks to Art for his drone work and usual excellent photography.
Sad. My thoughts are with all those affected by these eruptions. Sending love from New Zealand
The fire that never goes out. How devastating for those poor people.
Have you ever heard of Centralia?
At least people are safe. Good luck folks.
My heart breaks for the people of Grindavik. I can’t even imagine the amount of stress and fear they’ve been living with these last months and to now have their worst fears realized by having lava flowing into their town and threatening everything they own. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the man who lost his life when he fell into a fissure a few days ago. I pray that the eruption will cease and no more homes will be lost and people can retrieve all of their belongings before any further eruptions. I pray that this fishing season will be able to continue and the fishermen be able to continue to make their living.
prayers do nothing, get an education
A mammoth courageous effort Sir. I wish safety and strength for you and your family and friends! 🙏💛 from Australia 🇦🇺
Praying for the safety of all. God bless Iceland
god doesn't exist prayers do nothing, religious people are so stupid
PRaying for the animals that they were able to be removed...hoping families are out of the town and that their home values will be repaid to them...Sending supportive hugs.
animals are smarter than religious people, they don't believe in of have a need for an imaginary friend
In 1973 the town of Heimaey on an island not far from Grindavik was faced with a similar situation an eruption on the edge of town in the middle of the night. The town fought back against the lava as it entered the harbor of the most important fishing port in Iceland. Industrial size (possibly from the navy) firefighting pumps were flown in from the US. The lava had formed a jagged front that was able to be cooled diverting the pressure of the lava away from the heat of town and the harbor. The end result was a better harbor as the shape of the mouth became somewhat “s” shaped sheltering the fishing fleet better from North Atlantic storms.
I wish the people of Grindavik and Iceland the best. Technology is better today and so far it appears the majority of the fluid basaltic lava has followed the berm. It will be difficult to deal with the part of the fissure that breached the berm and is going down the main road.
I for the sake of the town and country of Iceland as a whole we see something of a repeat of the miracle in Heimaey. If there is anything that can be done to
minimize destruction I would hope to see Icelands friends lend to its aid to the people on the ground trying to save what they can like in 1973.
I love watching volcanoes, incredibly fierce raw nature.
However, this spectacular sight is at the expense of a town, its livelihood, its homes, friends, neighbours, loved ones, community and memories. My sincerest condolances, i hope you stay safe, healthy and have friends to take you in until future times help get your families back on course to live again.
Love to you, your families, from the myself in the UK.
How sad, how stomach-wrenching. Seeing these beautiful homes burn. A home is part of the core of life for people. I am very sorry for their loss.
Well done Volcanologists, for predicting and moving the people to safety. Feel for the people of Grindavik Hope they are able to find a place to rebuild their lives.
3:03 Probably off topic, your mic wind break thingie is doing an excellent job 🌬🎤 👏🏽
It looks like that barrier is doing it's job for the time being, but what a shock to see another fissure open right behind the town! I said this a couple of weeks ago, there is no way to know where another fissure could open. When you look at geological maps, the town is riddle with fault lines. I pray they won't open up too, but it should be no surprise if that happens. In fact I saw a little spark of light off in the distance up in the right hand side of this video at time stamp 4:02 and wondered if that wasn't a new opening beginning to grow
If you enlarge the image, it appears to be the light on a drone at 4:02.
I saw drone footage today, looking back at the fissure from the town. Looks to be a straight line of fissures. Probably continue thru town.
We appreciate your efforts out there. You may want to consider the joys of heated winter attire. It looks bitter cold in that wind.
so sorry for everyone involved. just please be safe
The opening shot is so striking, it’s a work of art on its own.
Sea of fire. 😭how sad for these people, sending prayers for safety. May the Lord be with you and protect everyone
Thank you Jon for getting out to this disaster 😢. We can all share in the towns heartache. Great filming I assume Art is with you.😊 Take care both ❤
Agreed. The drone footage really brought it home 😞
Sharing from the USA. Prayers for these folks. I served on Keflavik from May 88 to 89. This is sad to see.
Looks like someone needed warmer clothing, nice report thanks.
There are no words of empathy I can say that could come close to bringing solace to the people of Grindavik but I can say I have never seen a people be so resilient, committed and courageous, from the residents, to search & rescue, to the police and the amazing teams fighting relentlessly to construct the berms and barriers to protect as much as possible. God bless you.
This reporter's parents lives(d) in Grindavik. This must be terrible for him to report on.
I am a teacher in Lesotho within South Africa. The topic I am teaching the external stage is volcanic eruption, it's causes and consequences, land formation and rock formation. Volcanic eruption 's benefits, types of eruptions and earthquake. Thanks to the journalists for the information, it is helping my students to gain understanding.
Have you seen Just Icelandic's channel? I recommended it to a teaching colleague (geography) and they love it. His explanations are fabulous!
Have the sheep been rescued yet? 240 sheep were reportedly in locked structures and have no water.
Some idiots brought sheep back into the town, which wasn't allowed.@@Fizzbomb1335
By far the best video I’ve seen so far. Art you are excellent at ur job
Wow, how would it be watching a slow crawl of lava heading towards your home and town. I can't imagine. Stay strong and at least you can have your lives and move a little further down the road.
I remember those winds when I lived there with my husband when he was in the Navy and boy do I remember those winds! If they caught you in the back they would blow you down the street. Fun times. 😂
Excellent report under stressful and dangerous conditions.
Best of luck to all Icelanders, from Texas.
1:51 and 4:07 drone shots of burning houses in area north of traffic circle / roundabout. 4:34 Intense red lava glow! 4:53 wow, another wild view! Kudos to drone pilot! 👍
Is it Art I wonder? His drone work was absolutely amazing.
Excellent photography. Stay safe, Jon.
wonder if they will be able to restore power and water to the rest of the town that hasent been coverd in lava any time soon to keep pipes from freezing and such
I'm thinking of you people in Grindavik. Stay strong. Love, from New Zealand.
Sending blessings of safety compassion kindness empathy to all those in this town that are going thru natural disasters in Iceland..many thanks to all the first responders and environment engineers and political leaders that have to continue to make decisions of safety that affect other residents of this town...to the reporting news journalist and reporters, proudcers editors and camera personal thank you for your contiune review and news of this environmental crisis ...the noise that the lava makes is so different than ive ever heard. May those affected in this town find warm shelter safety food medince and some stability that helps them feel safer..💙🇺🇲🇨🇦💙🎤💻🎞🎬📹💙
So very sad for the homeowners.
Beautiful footage - really evocative and stylish
I can’t imagine the huge upset these eruptions must cause - that town is at mother nature’s mercy! I’m sure people are aware of the volcanic risk living in sections of Iceland, but I’m sure it must be devastating to lose your home like this.
Terrible situation, Jón's parents live in Grindavik. Hoping for an end to this eruption soon!
I remember that video. I so appreciated his parents allowing Jon to film when they went back to their home to get more stuff out. It broke my heart watching his dad at a dead-run trying to get as much as possible. I am overwhelmed to think of them all and what they are going through. And the ones who were evacuated from the island back in the 1970s….
Curious about any kind of financial help residents can expect or even if it exists ? And since the whole island is volcanic where do you go ?
May everyone be safe and survive unscathed. Take care! ❤
Does anybody have a thermo camera on a drone to see if there is any other hot spots around?
The UA-camr Just Icelandic has a thermal drone and has used it previously in the area. Sadly, he won't be allowed in the area to use it even though he has sent information off to the volcanologists in the past. Unless there is a chance he can get within range as he will be heading to Reykjavik from his home in the north. He used to work in Grindavik and has friends there, so the situation is personal to him. His channel is very good.
Give that reporter a warm hat!
Praying for Iceland to recover from the volcano activities and unexpected lava flows that come up from underneath the ground. Praying for the rescue team doing everything they can to save homes from the lava.
prayers do nothing, religious people are so stupid SMH
Ohhh sweetie, you look soooooo cold. You definitely need to get out of that wind. Thanks for your report. Stay safe and warm.
Thanks. I was indeed very cold.
It will be a sad thing if the blue lagoon is gone, but it is what it is. Be SAFE first of all
The blue lagoon is fine, it’s uphill from the lava flow
Thank you! Fortunately the Blue Lagoon is still there.
🙏 to everyone who are going to see their homes destroyed. Life can be cruel... keep goin. The rest of the world is thinking about you.
Can You imagine seeing lava envelope Your home...😮😢
It's obvious how cold it is, you are shivering visibly! My heart breaks for the people of Grindavik. Please stay safe and stay strong!
Not a fun event for onlookers like the eruption a few years a ago. Very sad, our hearts go out to the townspeople of Grindavik.
Like a movie. Coming up in the town? What are the chances.
Truly heartbreaking to witness. God save them all ❤
IN 1969 I was stationed in Iceland and worked at the U.S. Navy transmitter site that’s just spitting distance away from Grindavik to the NW. I have good memories of my year long stay in Iceland and my heart goes out to the residents of Grindavik. I hope most of the town will be spared eventually. I can still remember the smell of the fish drying on the big wooden racks nearby town.
Best footage I have seen yet. Sorry for all the loss.....
Prayers for the people of Grindavik that are losing everything. This is horrible devastation.
Attachment causes suffering. Live and love are more important and they will survive this!
prayers do nothing, religious people are so stupid
HOW OLD ARE THE TOWNS?
Declared a municipality in 1974 but has been a fishing station for eons.
People may be saying the berm was too little, too late, perhaps, but it would be disastrous already and beyond hope if the berm that was created hadn't been there. Bravo to the workers and engineers!!!
I do believe a crack opened on the inside of the berm.
Right? It does look as if the lava on the protective side of the berm is being diverted as intended. No one can predict exactly where the magma will decide to emerge.
My heart and prayers go out to the people of Grindavik and all the people of Iceland. ❤️🙏🏻
Nature reminding us who is in charge!
It is so sad to see those beautiful homes burning up. But it is good that the people had time to evacuate. Prayers or them.
Widok piękny i przerażający jednocześnie.
Sometimes we forget that the earth is in charge.
Thank you.
WOW, Fantastic views!! Where is your dog Polly?
Polly is no longer at The Reykjavik Grapevine since Valur does not work there anymore, and Polly is his dog.
So heartbreaking. Our prayers are with you ❤
Iceland must live with the worry of this happening all the time.
@rodneyjweltham150
Yes we all have something. I live in tornado alley.
Prayers are with the people of this community. May they be able to return safely to their homes once again. And for those that are not, may they find better happiness and security elsewhere.
Great footage Art! You do some of the best drone work that I have seen. Background audio adds a lot of depth.
My prayers for all the residents and the emergency personnel, reporters and spotters.
I just can't believe people have left their pets there again! My heart goes out to people who live in Grindavik, however they make their own decision to go back, their animals /pets got no say in the matter! I would never leave my home in a hurry without grabbing my pets. 😢
I have always wanted to visit this beautiful country and am greatly saddened by their latest woes...

Can you update images more frequently of how the second fissure is affecting the town? Please. Thank you.
Praying for the people of Iceland visited the country a few years ago beautiful and nice people
Good luck for Grindavik!!
Thanks!

Just sent you special prayers, glad to know that people were evacuated and sending you strength for the aftermath
The whole world is watching and learning ❤
I'm sure that a lot of people are, but it hasn't even made the news here in the UK, certainly not up to last night. Let's not exaggerate!
I'm very glad you're Parents are safe, Jón. I sincerely hope their home makes it through this OK. 🙏
Thanks for the updates! Please stay safe!
When it’s cold, put your hood up.
It stops your body heat from escaping through the top of your head.
It keeps out wind and helps to keep you significantly warmer.
How far away from the larger fissure has the lava traveled? Looks like a long ways
Thank you for the footage that I was looking for. I know that the people have been evacuated, but it does hurt to watch someone's home and it's contents going up in flames.
Thanks Jon and Art.
The lava is so beautiful.
I know what it's like to lose. To feel so desperately that you're right, yet to fail nonetheless.
