I think you may be right about Alex being the best singer Santana ever had, I loved him with Brian Auger and the Oblivion Express. However, the best line-up? This band was excellent but the Abraxas original band was pretty much untouchable. They had a vibe that no other Santana band has had, Schon joining for Santana lll added to it. As far as pure talent, the band on the Lotus album was exceptional, but for power and vibe I still have to favor the Abraxas band. IMHO...
Carlos has always lived in the stratosphere! His sound his style and his phrasing are just stunning! I've seen him five times and he's always been in my top two or three guitar players ever!
These were the best years. I remember at shows the whole audience being lifted all at once to their chairs dancing in such rhythm and nobody falling down. It was like an energy was flowing under everyone keeping them aloft. When you left the show you were riding so high. Incredible times.
No question that Greg Walker was the best vocalist they ever had. The most natural, the most soul, the best range, as well as the way he moved & looked onstage. I loved seeing that band.
@@tram84mvp I definitely don't agree. Alex has a fricking amazing voice in my opinion. I assume you have heard Alex sing all the other songs he sang. Especially Hold On!
@@jotenor No question Alex can sing. The issue is that he never really fit in sonically; his singing often seemed too forced. He didn't have the range that Greg had, nor the smooth R&B & gospel chops that made Greg's singing so effortless while at the same time being totally integrated with their overall sound. The band was so comfortable & natural behind him. Alex's other issue was that he had a hard time carrying the older songs which were meant for someone like Leon Patillo, Greg W. or Greg Rolie. A perfect example of this was when Lenny Williams left Tower Of Power & they've never quite found anyone to take his place, so the old songs were lacking; though Hubert Tubbs was pretty good. Alex's voice, the strengths & weaknesses with the Santana catalog, would have been better served with bands like the Allman Brothers, Delaney & Bonnie, The original Fleetwood Mac, Little Feat or a Stax/Volt kind of thing. But that's just my opinion after seeing multiple lineups of the band & having a few hundred hours of soundboard recordings. Santana was heavier with Alex which is what Carlos wanted after the '76-78 era. I preferred the sound of Greg's tenure, though my favorite era was the Lotus era from '72-74 which is only natural since I'm a Coltrane & Miles fanatic. I still think 'Caravanserai' was the greatest thing they ever did. Staggering; & one of the highest albums ever recorded. This is one of my fav performances, from Soundstage. I remember watching this on PBS in high school. Of course the Tower of Power horn section is excellent. ua-cam.com/video/jfzwEyB9tQo/v-deo.html
That must have been the performance done in Germany (Palast der Republik) on April 6th 1987. Maybe you can find some footage searching that. I know 'Before we go' from that show is on youtube!
Look ive got favourite singers of all time for instance Ronnie james but this voice is outer this world and ive always wanted to know who this amazing vocalist was man outstanding
Fantastic performance by all. Thank you!! It's very hard to find a good clip of this (the extended studio version from "Moonflower" appears to be non-existent) and this is a great show of his force and Alex's voice. Any idea what year?
Hi! Indeed one of the best concerts they have done! Specially the singing part of Alex is exceptional on this take of 'She's not there'. It is from the Rockpalast 1980 concert which took place on 12-6-1980 in the Westfalenhalle, Dortmund, Germany. There is a video of the entire concert on youtube also. It can be found here: part 1:ua-cam.com/video/X0Bs69cCoV8/v-deo.html part 2: ua-cam.com/video/y7nyGet0dZ8/v-deo.html Enjoy!
Moonflower was Greg, not Alex. Alex didn't join the band till '79. The Moonflower recordings, live, live w/vocal overdubs & studio were all recorded from '76 (w/vocalist Leon Patillo) on the Amigos Europe shows, to '77 in San Francisco. Some of Leon's vocals were overdubbed by Greg).
I have had the same problem not being able to find the better original music videos. I think perhaps one of the musicians felt upstaged and had an issue which buried the best reproductions of these videos. I think most people know without all artists participating this masterpiece would not have happened. It went to the soul! . I hope to see more, and better reproductions of US 82' !! LOVE US!
It was great to see Mike playing drums again at that time, Carlos and Mike play so well together, feed off each other, Carlos always looked happiest on stage with Mike being the kit.
Anybody know if this was the same lineup when Santana opened for Frampton Comes Alive in ‘76 w/Gary Wright?? That’s when I 1st saw them as a teenager. TY 😊
I'm not trying 2 put anyone down Alex has a beautiful voice and I'm not taking that away from him, but if that would've been me, being a lead vocalist I would have fixed my teeth.
This is great but it's not the track from Moonflower (which is an excellent album). On Moonflower, which I believe was recorded earlier than this clip, they had a different singer.
There it is again: the endless discussion 'bout who's the best singer for Santana...... I think you should throw away all records with every singer you don't like and play only that one record with your singer of choice! NOT! Please be happy with the body of work Santana's left us and enjoy.
@@guitarclassics I only wanted to highlight this great live vocal outbursts because they are rare and chilling. People whine about everything these days. Not my fault :)
Well, it's too late to say you're sorry How would I know, why should I care Please don't bother trying to find her She's not there.... Well, let me tell you about the way she looked The way she acted, the color of her hair Her voice is soft and cool Her eyes are clear and bright But she's not there...
The golden voice of Alex Ligertwood in the best Santana lineup.
The best Santana line up. And Alex is the greatest singer Santana ever had.

Alex was tops!
I have to agree!
Gregg Rollie was in the best lineup…
the best voice of santana's band
....what about Greg Walker..? he was pretty good also
Former singer of Brian Auger's Oblivion Express
Alex Ligertwood....the "sound" of Santana. I miss him. Their best lead vocal ❤
I prefer Greg Walker. Alex was good, but Greg was the man
I think the original Keyboard player of Santana was Gregg Rolie who sung Black Magic Woman and Oye Como Va. It was the Original Studio Recording.

Those were the wild years of Santana. Songs and performances that give you energy for a lifetime.

My daughters took me to a Santana concert for my 67 birthday. The best birthday present ever 🎁
Congratulations!
Alex Ligertwood - for me the best leadsinger through all decades. And today he has the same great voice with "The Magic of Santana".
Tony lindsay, as far as singing, is far more talented. Alex is great however
Alex can't be beat.
Moonflower was thier bet album since the first three killer albums

Alex Ligertwood you're great 👍 voice for Santana awesome.
That Yamaha SG guitar of Carlos' back then was his greatest ever tone & sound!!! Such a beast!
Alex the great.
Suits perfect to that period of Santana
Without a doubt an awesome version ... Oh and I love the jersey Carlos is wearing!
Late 80s, These guys with the Neville Bros opening... Incredible
Santana is a Legend! Switched guitars during the song! And Alex, Raul, the best live band🤗
Agree! Carlos learned a lot of his guitar skills from Gary Duncan of QMS band~who is a favorite guitarist of mine. R.I.P. Gary🥀🕊️
Top lineup.
Neal Adams, Alex your the best!!!!! We love ya. And will always remember you. Thanks for all the good times... You Rock
Now that’s a band my son !
Breaks a string, changes guitar ten seconds before second solo, no sweat, just another Friday night for Carlos.

Santana was one of my faves. What Carlos can do with a guitar is amazing.
Alex Ligertwood has a great voice 👌 👏 & great singer for Santana awesome &🏆 wonderful...Ray Patel

Great Zombies song. This is one of my favorite covers of it!
