It was the Ancient Greeks who first started talking about temperament. They put temperamental differences down to predominant body fluids. After a hiatus of more than 1000 years, modern-day Psychologists have returned to the question of temperament, and whether a child's temperament can give an indication of the adult they will in time grow into.

If a person's temperamental characteristics match the environment in which he lives, why are people raised in the same environment often so different from one another? Like siblings? I have four siblings, all of whom had very different temperaments from one another as infants and still do today, as preteens and teenagers. Granted, a home environment will change over time, and birth order in part determines the type of experiences a person will have, but if that accounted for all of it we would probably see an "oldest child" personality type and a "middle child" personality type and so on. There are characteristics we commonly associate with these people, but nothing expansive enough to be called a temperament. I'm really curious about this.

That's a really good point about siblings all being different, but with similar upbringings/environment. What I might suggest in reply is that the outcome is a combination of environment and other factors, perhaps genetic, which explains why different people react differently to the same environmental cues.
It's also worth thinking about environmental factors in a more temporary manner. Environment doesn't just mean home life. A person might be influenced by environmental factors when at a nightclub and act in a way that is different when they're in a library (even though they're still the same person).
I think ultimately this comes down to whether you believe in permanent traits or not... People who lean more towards the existence of permanent traits often disassociate personality/temperament from the environment and look for more permanent, internal factors to explain individual differences...
My own opinion is that it's probably a combination of internal and external factors... Have you heard of the term epigenetic? This is to do with the interaction between environmental and genetic factors

@@PsychologyUnlocked Yes, I have heard of epigenetics, and your stance seems quite reasonable. I'm not sure yet what I believe personally and will probably be doing more research. Thank you for your reply!
