Correction ~ I miss spoke about pulling film - When pulling film, the negative develops for a shorter amount of time than normal... I accidentally said Longer .... Brain Fart
Also you are actually overexposing the film by 1 stop, means +1, not -1
@@Turgutyeter Usually, when marking the film, pulling is indicated by -1 (meaning one stop less sensitivity/development) and pushing by +1. Yes, this also comes with exposure correction by +1 (pull) and -1 stop (push) - but this is not over- or underexposure, since sensitivity is changed (well, a bit more complicated than that, let's just say the exposure index EI is changed). Overexposure by +1 stop means that the film is developed for box speed and just given more light.
It is time we use the old terms uprating and downrating, when exposing, and pulling and pushing when speaking in context of development. When you uprate a film, you push the processing to compensate etc. In my early days as a pro, shooting film, it was what was used around these parts.
I overexposed (iso 100) and I pulled in development hence the -1
I did both
@@BadFlashes you could say you just treat the film as if it's iso 100 and both shoot it and develop it at 100. i like the other comment's suggestion of saying uprating and downrating, sounds clearer what is happening, we're just changing what the box speed is vs just overexposing or underexposing but then developing at normal speed. it confuses me all the time still
Regardless of the results, another color film by a major lab is a total win! I'd like to see the results of normal film shooting, overexposing 1 stop and normal development. We never pulled unless the conditions were too bright to achieve a proper exposure which those Nikons are more than capable of achieving. Either way, always good to see a new video!
Yaya I’m glad
THE KING IS HERE!!!!
🚀🚀🚀🚀
Couldn’t agree more! As it’s been said, competition is good! And yes I’ve done the whole open the back with film in it. If you don’t do that can you really call yourself a true film photographer? 😂😂
Lol thanks for making me feel better 😂
Leave the photos on the screen a fraction of a nano-second longer. This isn’t tic-to where I have to rewind and pasue constantly to see wtf that the text comment says. I’m here to look at pictures, so let me. Otherwise, positive things to say, and I have decided to choose Phoenix as my primary film to support a third party and make it happen, I’ll evolve with it if I can. I think photography needs this more than it can afford to pass it off…for any reason.
#supportfilm also noted on the pics ... hard balance sometimes when editing ... but totally get it :)
Are you guys wearing high vis vests so that it looks like your there in an official capacity in case anyone comes to ask what your doing? :)
Excellent vid! Ordering this film today :)
That or just so that someone doesn’t shoot us lol
@@BadFlashes oh god! I hadn’t thought of that! Two uses then :)
swastika on the upside down car is craaazy, lovin the look of phoenix so far tho!!!
There were some on the big excavator as well
Yeah I wish I caught them before uploading!
Upon seeing images from Phoenix, I really thought pulling it would be a good idea to diminish some of the weaknesses it has, but I didn't see a lot of people pulling it, and I'm glad Caleb did it. Not only that, these are legitimately some of the best results I've seen out of this film stock! Nice work Caleb!
Oh awesome! So glad you dig them! Yeah I know pulling would be the move and it is :)
I’m stoked someone with such a rich history in film is stepping up. Competition is always good. Fuji left a hole and Kodak prices are consistently going up. We need some other options!
I really like the look overall, and can’t wait to try it out!
I’m right there with you :)
absolute true …. lets unite and support these guys as much as possible
Where do you buy…? 😀
should be anyways and everywhere by now ... unless you are in a small town maybe???? @@stevecrawford3551
Competition?
Having watched several videos now on Phoenix, I think these were my favorite results anyone had. Actually particularly enjoyed the box speed results on the FA. Nice job, my dude. 🙌🏻
Also, I've also photographed that cafe and gas station in Onyx, it was fun to see what frames you ended up grabbing in comparison to what I did.
Oh, sick dude! That place was so awesome. I’m definitely wanting to go back with some medium format or a large format.
And thanks! I’m glad that you did the results. It’s funny that you like the box speed stuff. Honestly, some of the shots are quite nice still boxed, so I definitely feel ya.
All the random swastikas though
Yeah…. I didn’t know …. But like the images are tight… I didn’t notice them
Looks a lot better pulled but uhh probably could've cut the swastikas out
I’m with you on that
Pulled. For sure.
And yeah… honestly when editing it didn’t even noticed them. If I had totally would have. I’ll be removing them in the images. I post online.
COLOR! I really like the pulled images but some of the box speed shots are just right! I really do like the colors! Giving me kodak gold vibes a little. The grain difference with just a stop is kinda crazy. That film stock sweatshirt is so cool as well. Also, that ricoh focal length and sharpness is so good. 100 is the sweet spot for that film from what I can see. Have a good weekend dude.
Thanks yo so glad you enjoyed
It's 2024 and somehow Harry Potter feels much , much more dated and poorly aged than analoge photography
oh wowo ... fighting words ???? lol
JK lolz
@@BadFlashes JK? Don't call me Joanne Rowling please >:(
First of all, you're absolutely right that we need to support this project! As I said on Jason's video, I'm not a huge fan of this film at box speed, but I'm very interested to see what they come up with next. What I am a big fan of is the breadth of info and vibes watching you guys' videos back to back. I love Jason's coverage of the people behind this project and showcasing their passion, and I love your video's more "scientific" approach which shows us more of what this stock can really do! The smoothness of the -1 pull in harsh light was nutty and I liked the way it shifted the colors as well. Like I said, after Jason's video I was going to buy it for the sole purpose of supporting the project, but you've shown us a different side of it that I really like and now I'll buy it to experiment with! Now to get a scanning setup...
Yay I’m so glad! It was a treat to get to explore the stock. I’m glad you enjoyed the different facets of the film stock
You should carry some shake cans to overspray random swastikas…
That aside, great to see some brand new stock. Looks interesting. Should I hold my breath for 120?.
They might be making it in 120 soooo you never know.
4:55 wait, when you pull film you put it in the developer less time, not more
My thought as well. I was confused for a bit.
Yeah, you guys are right I totally misspoke just one of those things that happens when you’re talking to a camera and I never caught it when I was editing unfortunately
@@BadFlashes Thanks. Totally get it. Love your content however and your review made me want to try the film.
The guy in the video said you leave the film longer in development when pulling...I thought pulling was the opposite. Overexpose and shorter development than usual. Pushing is when you underexpose and develop for longer.
Oh, wow how did I miss speak…. Thanks for catching that!
Thanks for the video! For the sake of clarification, did you rate the film at 100 or did you have the lab pull the development? Thanks! Edit - or both?
I am a little confused, too. Also the statement at about 4:49 that pulled film is developed longer does not really make sense. I think there is a general miscommunication about over-/underexposing when shooting the film and pushing/pulling in developement here.
Pulling is both … overexposing the image by a stop…. The. Asking your lab to pull the image by putting a -1 on it. They they leave it in the development for a shorter time
I apologize I misspoke in the video.
@@BadFlashes No need to apologize. However - in my opinion the pulled pictures came out way better than shooting at box speed!
Love love love Harman for doing this. Also love that you got to try it. Your photos came out really well!
Aw thanks so much
Thanks for the fun video!! I'll have to bag some of this and give it a spin.
I need to learn about pushing, pulling film....real quick, if you pull by a stop...that means you overexpose by 1 stop, and then take it out of the developer early by one stop?
Thank you in advance,
CC
You’ll definitely have to give it a spin! I didn’t actually misspeak a little in the video I believe and said you keep the film longer which is not true. Pulling does mean overexposed by a stop and you do take it out earlier and development. The time I’m not quite sure on … so you’ll have to look that up
First of all, love the video. I still have some boxes of Phoenix 200 laying around and waiting for the right opportunity to use them. Secondly, I'm also loving all of the Order of the Phoenix references, however, Creature the House Elf had a pretty great redemption arc in the book. The movie did him dirtier than underexposed Phoenix 200.
Hahaha they did do him dirty. That’s right!!!
I’m glad you liked the episode
Thanks. Very nice video! As I understand it is a 123.5 ISO film. From the Ricoh images I guess they don't DX code it as 200? I liked the pulled images with regards to shadows, but not colour. Is it hard to get it to match box speed ? Especially greens in the shot before the stairway as way yellow in the pulled image.
I don’t think it’s hard to get the color to match. You could always just overexpose a bit and hopefully retain those box colors you like
This had to be the best comparison I’ve seen. Whitty humour aside, you’ve demonstrated the best range of the film rather than just one box speed test unedited.
Thank you I really wanted to go deep on this film and see what is capable of
Didn't really matter that much how the film looked to me tbh. It's literally everything we beg for and that's more film and more availability of film. Will buy some as soon as I can and plan on shooting some with some adapters in some brownie cams and maybe some 30's medium format pocket cams to see what the potential could be on a 6x9 for a 120 variant. Never know we could look back at when this came out as a pivot point for film popularity and nostalgia kind of like Agfa RSX or other films. I work at a retail store that doesn't really carry much photo equipment but we do sell FUJI 400 3 Packs and we do sell a few a week which is great to see.
More film more film more film! So glad you think so toooo :)
I always want to bring a roller and paint to erase graffiti when shooting, but I kinda want to do that everywhere too. And, film’s expensive enough.
Not sure why the world needs to be the same as the margins of my school notebooks.
Rattlesnakes: "Take my picture, take my picture!!"
Hahaha right
What was the name of the blues track played during the shots of the collapsed barn please? Enjoyed the video, great to see someone experimenting with film.
Oh thanks!!!!! So happy
Unfortunately I don’t remember the track name but it’s from epidemic sound.
You DEFINITELY had the best results with this film stock from any of the videos I have watched. I was slightly on the fence about the film. But I will definitely give it a try soon.
Yaya!!! Totally give it a try 🥹
Thanks for a great review! looking to shoot 35 mil version and hope they eventually come out with a 120 mil version!
Of course!
Great video, as always. After watching several Phoenix vids, I think it’s safe to say that you got the most of of the film (or just “best shots”) of the bunch. Gonna have to go watch your push/pull video and take some notes before my film arrives in the post.
Aw thanks. The film really does preform so I’m glad you dig the vid. But yeah pulling …. Set your meter to iso 100 and then tell the lab to pull it a stop :)
I guess everyone who shooting film will accidentally opening the back once 😅
lol it’s all but certain 🤪
Was it my imagination or did the Ricoh images at box speed have less grain than the Nikon FA at box speed? Ricoh metering letting in more light?
It might. But I’d have to go back to the source
That Ewan McGregor Jesus/Obiwan Kenobi picture makes me laugh every times.
Hahah right. Couldn’t believe they had it up in the room
13:25 Wow! Dad reflexes! When is it due? 🐥
😝 I’m a ninja 🥷
Thanks for video👍. Am going to support the stock….😂…scouring google earth to figure out where u were❤
hahah thanks glad you liked the vid!
this is probably the first video that's convinced me to pick up a roll sometime (I just spent all my money on black Friday film deals). I think pulling or rating it 100 is definitely the way to go! I enjoyed your shots 🙂
Yaya so glad you liked em!!!! Try it out for sure someday !
You're going to Europe, you're allowed to shoot anything you want- anyway you want.(unknown if you even shoot Digital)
How you gonna do it?
Film OR Digital?
Thanks.
Film!!!!!🎞️
ok man!!! Thanks!!@@BadFlashes
So I’m guessing the memo from
Harman said “release on Friday at 11am?” Cause I got an email from a lab at 11 and all yall film channels released around the same”
I mean not quite but something like that lol are you mad at it 😝😝😝😝😝
@@BadFlashes I was whelmed with the amount of phoenix notifications!
to confirm, the camera settings for the first two rolls are the same? Both shot at 200 ISO. But one roll was pulled a stop?
Kinda …. one was shot at 200 and the other was shot at iso 100 and also pulled in development
The pulled shot of that upside down car is sharper than professor mcgonagall’s wit. Marry me
😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘🥰 ok
Idk man, the pulled photos look absolutely incredible. Isn't that essentially shooting ISO 100?
I had the same thought, but pulling is shooting over exposed followed by a shorter development time. So I think he was trying to demo a pull vs a roll that was just overexposed and developed normally.
Pulling and pushing only happens in development. Rating it one stop over would be shooting it at 100 with normal development. He may have rated it at 100 and had the lab pull it one stop. There's some method to that madness. The shadows fully develop early on in the process. So pulling or under developing really only affects the highlights. That may explain the favorable results.
I did indeed overexposed … the. I had the lab pull the roll in dev…. I did miss speaking in the video, unfortunately saying keep the film in the soup for longer… I do know that it’s less time in the developer… dumb me
Hope you did the images tho and the film 🎞️
@@BadFlashes no worries at all. It's great that you did so much experimentation. That'll help a bunch of people. Thanks for the clarification.
Video @ 3:56 Multiple Nikon F3 images show a gradient & darkened right side of the frame. This is common on cameras with focal plane shutters that are out of calibration (curtain travel times are no longer matched up). It will get worse wasting film; so it needs to be serviced...
Oh interesting. I’ll have to check it out
@@BadFlashes It's most obvious at the 2,000th and 1,000th shutter speeds (your F3). Also VERY common in the 1,000th of the Leica M6 model that you own (I fix these issues all the time)... Your camera Tech😎
What flash and flash cord did you use in the FA? Looking for one on my F3.
Light pix qii … i think. Lol
And the cable is a Nikon , speed flash cable
Great vid! Just an fyi thumbnail is missing on my end at the moment
Oh really. That’s weird.
I would love to know how you plan a trip and how you find locations! Great video!
Maybe that would make for a great episode
That shot of the flipped car was probably my favorite, love the pulled ones. I'd be interested to see the halation on a faster stock like 800
Yeah, that photo really shows the true capacity of how clean the image can be
The pulled film reminds me of Pro400H a bit. Obviously more contrast and way less dynamic range, but them GREENS DOE. In a few years, this will be the shit.
Oh yeah it willlllll
3:47 maybe shouldntve panned to the sw*stikas lol
Yeah didn’t notice it …. Sooo 🤷🏼
I just subscribed your channel. It's awesome.
Ahhh lovely!!!!! Thanks for joining
It would have been nice if they sent me some - and I am in bloody England!
Hahaha sorry yo.
Well hopefully you can pick some up
Actually, loved the Box speed photos more than the -1
They are chill
Cool video Erik! I've owned this camera for a while and it's really a tank. Feels like a small DSLR. Good grip, so many features, very solid! The lens is awesome and the zoom range something very rare for it's time. The displays made it hard to see what you are doing because of it's low resolution and small size. But in 2004... it was great! Sadly the internal battery was empty and i couldn't replace it... that's very annoying. Keep it up, good job! 👍🏻
missed another upload wtf is going on caleb??????????
Naw …. You just got this one early 🤪
Think of it like like you’re part of a Patreon lol
Who’s hot grandma was that behind you in the opening of the video?
Kodak ad baby!
Congrats to Harman, and a boon for film photography. Really liked the film a lot pulled one stop , will be trying it out. Thanks for a great review!
Thanks! I’m glad you liked it. I’m a fan of
I'll give this new stock a go... you said it's basically Ilford?
Ummmmm Harman lol
ok well anyhow i have 2 rolls of it coming! thanks for the tipoff@@BadFlashes
Nobody commenting on the swastika on the car lol
Hahah you’re late to the game. Everyone did…. I did t even know until they told me. I painted them out of the images I posted to IG
I didn’t know Jason looked like that in the wicker chair photo.
Wicker chair??????????
Am I the only one that liked the Box Speed images better?
Hahaha weirdo!!!!
Jk they do look nice too. 🥰🥰🥰
What was that alien circle cloud at 3:41 ????
👽
how come the ricoh shoots like it‘s pulled one stop?
Yeah I honestly have no clue. I was surprised tooo. Maybe bc it was overcast? But even then … maybe the DX code is not 200 🤷🏼
@@BadFlashes ugh.. i just looked up how to „read“ dx code. I don‘t have Phoenix at hand but it should be possible to read the actual dx info using a chart.
I don’t think this film will become my go to colour film, but it’s great to have another option so I’ve ordered a few rolls and I’ll try it out. Even if I don’t like it , I’m happy a new film has been released. What I’d really love is some new high ISO colour film… 800 and above
It's just the first step. Im sure the future films will look better.
Exactly building towards a well exposed future pun definitely intended lol
Love the bit where you compare grain on a swastika 😂😂😂
😔 I know … I never noticed
@@BadFlasheshahahahaha love you mate! We know you're not secretly hiding anything like that ;) or if you are you've done well keeping a lid on it so far ❤
Best results with the phoenix ive seen so far! Great job 👌🏼
Oh sick! Thanks 🥹🚀🥰
What lens did you have on the FA? 🤔
They both had Nikon 35mm f2
that scanning setup xD what lens is that?
Ok that was fake B-roll …. I don’t have another camera to use so I had to just put something there. Hahaha that’s why it’s barely in frame
The Harry Potter references are so cringe
Love some good cringe!!!!!
I think I have a photo that trumps Jason’s toilet photos. Spotted a porta potty that someone put on wheels, and strapped an engine on. Nothing like seeing one of those speeding down the road. Did some dragging shutter shots there.
That grain is insane for a 200 speed film. It looks like it’s been pushed to 1600.
Yeah, his first go is a little grainy, but that’s why you pull the film and then bye-bye grain
@@BadFlashes It seems to behave more like a 100 speed film, as box speed looks underexposed
Love the intro music choice
Aw thanks 🙏🏼
New film stock! Awwwww yeah
Right !!!!! 🚀
Thanks for the video. Going to try rating at 100 when my rolls arrive. Either that or manually meter for 120 which I think is the native film speed .
Sounds solid to meeeee
Well thank you for this science class Dr. Bad Flashes! Now I am sure I will pull Phoenix film stock -1 when shooting! The results are fantastic! Thank you for your video!
Of course!!!! Glad you liked it and yeah for sure …. Pulling is dope
The high contrast, saturated colours and grain gives me strong flashbacks to cross processed slide film like Crossbird & old Ektachrome which I’m all for. In a moment of madness I just ordered 15 rolls!!
Hahaha hells yeah 🙌🏼🤘🏼
the thumbnail for this vid is so minimalist.
Yeah, I know right. It’s unfortunate, but I contacted UA-cam about it.
@@BadFlashes it’s probably because the person in charge of YT thumbnail code is pissed that Harman didn’t put out an Aerochome type film, and this is their protest.
Just bought a few rolls of this film and I’m super stoked even more after watching this!
Oh yaya!!!!!!
hell yeah, new caleb video!
Yay!
its probably best to rate it at 100-125 and develop as normal in c41 without pushing or pulling
Pushing definitely adds an extra cost to it, but does make things look good
I agree with many other users. I'm not a fan of this film. It is far too grainy for my taste. Also, the contrasts vary too much and don't seem to be the same in similar situations. Pulling might help a bit, but then the highlights burn out. However, I know the Haman company and especially Ilford with their fantastic black and white films very well. So I support this project and will order some Phoenix films from B&H, my second main supplier. ContinentalPhoto, my main supplier, does not yet have this film.
More color film 🎞️
Never a bad thing to support 🥰
Loved the side-by-side comparison. Box vs. F-1. Thanks for the very scientific approach. Always need more data. This was excellent.
Data is king!!!! 👑 🥳
nice hat👍🏻
I love it thanks 🙏🏼
I find it quite funny that you used a Kodak box to store the new Ilford film in 😁
And BTW, don't waste your money filling tires with nitrogen; the air we breath is already 78% nitrogen.
Well, you know … we’re all friends here
Lol
That flipped car comparison @6:06 makes a really nice crossed eye 3D picture. For those whom know they know.
Anyway, very comprehensive explanation. Lots of interesting information.
So glad you enjoyed the video! :)
Bring on the saturation, the light and the overexposure. Fresh Bad Flashes content always relaxes me, makes my day better. I need to shoot the rest of the Roll of UltraMax 400 in the Canon L1. Hope the light's right.
Do it!!!! Ultramax for the win!!!!!!
And thanks for the love 💜
That melting house shot is incredible!
🥰🥰🥰🥰
Great video! Definitely one of the best and most detailed video I've seen so far! I definitely want to help the project by buying some but am not too into the box speed look, overexposing seems to be the best option for me.
I have a question regarding shots at 7:56, what doo you attribute the differences (in what seems to be exposure) between images shot at box speed in the FA vs in the Ricoh?
Aw thanks so much! As for your question… honestly no idea. Maybe the DX is less than 200 🤷🏼
Should ask … shouldn’t I
Not a fan of how much extra work is needed to get a quality image, but I’m certainly glad new colour film is being made! Keep it up, Harman!
Let go Harman!!!!!!
I hope that Harmon watches this video - exactly the type of experimentation that they need. A number of your photos had merit so, for some lighting conditions / subjects, this "experimental" film is usable now. I bought four rolls to support their efforts.
Oh, I’m so glad you enjoy the video! I know at least they know it exists
Lol
Of all of the videos reviewing Phoenix 200 ( Phoenixpalooza?) I watched today yours was the most instructive.
Aw yay. I’m excited you took a lot away from it :)
I'm absolutely hyped for a competitor to Kodak in the color film market. I'm loving what I see from Phoenix and can't wait for more!
Oh yeah!!! Agreeeeee
…you can‘t store the Harman films in a Kodak box 😉… Thanks for the video, great job 👍
We are all friends here 🤪
Best review I have seen for this film. Shooting at 100 looks like the way to go. I'm am in & will order several rolls to give it a go & to support Harmon.

Ayyyy that’s what’s what !!!!!!!!
I'm really impressed with what you got out of this film. It inspired me to shoot it at 100 indoors and 125 outside on an overcast day. I'll be posting results soon, but definitely inspired by this video to shoot closer to 100 iso and develop normally.
Oh awesome. So glad that I could help out :)
Thanks for the cool video - great to see how the film behaves at different ratings!
Totally :)
And you’re welcome 😇
The comparison at 7:57 is amazing, but it's especially amazing because the box speed shot looks so sick. Far from neutral but super interesting.
Oh thanks. Yeah for what you get it’s pretty sick! :)
even the video footage has the phoenix look! #onpointgrading #bittedankegerne

Great review! I’m looking forward to shooting this. I love that you experimented wildly with your rolls to help us see what it could do. Also, I totally agree that this is fantastic news for us film shooters.
Awwww thanks. And for sure It’s some fun stufff . 🚀
Excited to test this stock out and great to see it has some variability with pulling it.
Yeah. I really in the pulling.
