I too was glad when my mother died as she was a black hole of need that drained me of any sort of ability to live my life as I saw fit. I have been in therapy now for about a year and a half and have already made a lot of progress, but still have a lot of work ahead to re-learn how to live as an independent adult. I saw your interview recently where you got emotional and I cried for you and myself which is healing because everytime I reach that emotional inner child I am processing a part of the trauma I received since I was very young.
Christmas was very much a mixed blessing in my childhood, as my dad never did any of the shopping (never knew what mother had bought us from him) and would almost invariably blow his top on that day with yelling. Far from coddled, Between those Two Ferns, he never bought me any birthday gift ever. Sometimes didn't even remember the date.
