  • Intel recently released their 8th generation Coffee Lake mobile CPUs for laptops, in this video I will compare the features and performance differences between the popular i7-8750H CPU and slightly more powerful i7-8850H CPU to help you decide if it’s worth paying more for the better CPU. I’ve benchmarked both games and CPU intensive applications to show you the difference between them, both at stock speeds and with the 8850H overclocked to 4.3GHz.

    This is a very rare and informative review of CPU performance between 8750h and 8850h. A google search would show nothing more useful than the cinebench comparison from March this year, in which the i9 is somehow slower than both i7. Thank you very much for the up to date review on the two CPUs. I can't wait to see more comparisons where the i9 8950hk is also included. Cheers!

      Good to hear that it was useful! I just got my first i9 laptop for review, although it has different graphics to the 8850H laptop, hopefully will also be getting another i9 with the same GPU in the future though and I can do more comparisons with it!

    amazing vid as always! I don't think the gaming benchmarks were very accurate though as I think in case of 8750h was throttling which caused such huge difference in performance in so many titles. gtx 1070 is not that fast of a card right now to cause such a difference with just the cpu(on higher settings I mean), as the actual clockspeed difference between these cpu-s isn't that big. When Volta comes out though, 8850h will be more preferable, but of course only if laptops with it will be cool enough.
    Thanks for the video!

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  6 років тому

      Thanks, I didn't see throttling in the 8750H laptop in the games, but yeah I didn't explicitly check for every single game, there was some power limit throttling occasionally on the 8850H with the overclock though, I feel like that'll probably just be typical with it in most laptops once you overclock it.

  • @electricmiragemedia
    @electricmiragemedia 6 років тому +2

    Another truly excellent in-depth video. Thank you for your hard work. I think Coffee Lake-H is a bit of a mess, with power requirements on max load *doubling* that of the previous generation. I see my undervolted 8750H pull 77W, so I could see why most OEMs aren't even bothing with the 8850, let alone the i9 (except Dell who just want to cash in on CPU magpies)

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  6 років тому

      Cheers! Haha yeah kind of silly to keep listing them all as 45W TDP 😛 how useless! I should be getting my first i9 in a few days so that will be interesting, although probably no gaming tests as it will have different graphics than the 8850H laptop I had, how annoying!

  • @chaoz6097
    @chaoz6097 6 років тому +2

    Great CPU comparison video! I would prefer the 8750H as there isn't much of a difference in most cases. Most of the time the 8850H just came ahead by a little but anyways

  • @Zipzeolocke
    @Zipzeolocke 6 років тому +2

    nobody is going to want to play games at the lowest graphics settings… So the verdict of this video to me says go out and get either one because when you play with decent graphics settings both of these CPU are nearly on par with each other and you'll only get a few FPS difference, I highly doubt you would notice the difference unless you really look for it

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  6 років тому

      Yeah for gaming with good settings doesn't really matter, maybe more of a difference if you do other CPU-centric tasks though, either way though yeah quite small really.

    thumbs up for the "cache" comment!!!
    for Overclocked laptops, because of the shared heatpipes and limited thermal headroom, sometimes cranking the CPU up to max will not get you the best performance.
    Power limit throttling can be resolved by increasing the wattage and the amperage settings in XTU. You can set them to the maximum settings and the CPU will only draw what it wants rather than being artificially limited. That leaves thermals as the only thing you need to manage.
    The Balanced power setting generally works better than the high performance power setting as well in a laptop environment

      To be honest I can't remember the details, you can refer to my Aorus X5 review though, I talk about testing clock speeds under stress test and gaming in depth. Basically to improve it as much as possible you'll want to undervolt the CPU and boost the power limit.

      I wasn't able to get mine any higher than what I had it here, would vary between CPU and laptop based on thermals/power limits though.

  • @2011Kestrel
    @2011Kestrel 6 років тому

    Thanks for the great comparison, I'm very interested in both of these CPU's for my next laptop. I would prefer the i7-8850H if the price difference isn't too bad. Currently one can upgrade from the 8750H to the 8850H in the Dell Precision 7530 for $260 CDN - I'm not sure if that's worth the price.
    Have you had a chance to check out the Xeon E-2176M? I would love to see how it compares to the i7-8850H - their specs are very similar - and the cost difference is $180 CDN (again on the Dell Precision 7530).

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  6 років тому

      Hmm that's a bit more than I'd personally pay to upgrade, doesn't really make that much difference in the way I personally use my laptop though. I haven't unfortunately, only Xeons I've ever had are my two old 2760s and x5650 😛

    • @2011Kestrel
      @2011Kestrel 6 років тому

      I don't have the knowledge/experience to properly evaluate the pricing of these things - the last time I seriously shopped for tech was in 2010. But I'm planning on using this laptop for the next several years, so I'm willing to spend a little more to get more performance and maybe better longevity. I'll take the i7-8850H if I can afford it, but honestly the i7-8750H would probably serve my needs just as well. I'm just being CPU greedy. :)
      As far as the Xeon E-2176M goes, I still haven't came across any good comparisons between it and the i7-8850H other than slightly better benchmarks for the Xeon. I take benchmarks with a grain of salt - we both know that benchmarks are really only good for guessing at real world performance, and I get the feeling that the i7-8850H would actually serve my needs better while being more affordable. The only compelling reason I have at this time for getting a Xeon processor is bragging rights - saying that I have a Xeon processor instead of a "lowly" i7. And having a Xeon may make reselling the laptop easier down the line. Brand recognition and all that.
      On a side note the laptop currently at the top of my list is the HP Zbook Studio x360. I think it'll serve all my needs beautifully.
      I'm looking forward to more reviews. Take care and keep up the good work.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  6 років тому

      Cheers! Yeah fair enough, generally buying the best you can afford at the time works pretty well for longevity. The Xeon E-2176M looks pretty decent in terms of clock speeds, I hope I get the chance to get one and compare it in the future, but yeah definitely a bit more uncommon.

      Thanks! Not sure on pricing unfortunately, based on the rumours it seems that it's not long until the next gen, but not sure how long we'll need to wait before we have a few laptops to choose from with the new stuff. At this point I'd probably wait it out unless I needed a new laptop ASAP, that way even if you go with the 10 series it may be on sale by that point.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  6 років тому +1

      To be honest most of the brands I've tested when you get into the higher end gaming laptops are all pretty good, even the mid range isn't too bad for like ASUS/MSI etc, I can't really think of one I prefer over the other in terms of just brand, I try to evaluate based on hardware/specs/performance etc, all the brands I've tested have pretty good options and depending on what you're after I would recommend quite a few (eg MSI GS65/Gigabyte Aero 15x/Aorus x5/ASUS Scar etc)

    • @gregh2003

      I'm considering something like the Dell G7 yet ProductReview for Dell Australia shows a massive red flag in term of customer service. Have you ever experienced this before? (if you have ever owned a Dell)

    • @JarrodsTech

      I don't have any experience with Dell customer service recently unfortunately, I dealt with them in like 2007 or something and they seemed fine, but nothing anymore recent than that I'm afraid.

    As far as I know 8850h is only partially unlocked. So, you can overclock up to 400mhz and no more. You could give an information about it too though.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  6 років тому

      I'm not sure, I thought it was just unlocked in terms of the core multipliers, doesn't matter too much as I doubt you'll be able to go above that on a laptop CPU anyway due to power/thermal limitations.

    • @gokberkturkdogru9664
      @gokberkturkdogru9664 6 років тому

      thats I think the reason why its not fully unlocked. Intel did this only for this CPU but not naming it "k", coz I believe its not unlocked in the traditional way.

    Hey is i7-8750h under performing after very small intensive work? Almost all new laptops with this chip is struggling to give sustained turbo boost. Cinebench R15 too dips quickly like 1050 to 800 in no time . Should I go with i7-7700hq ( awesome proven consistency) over this? I don't mind 5℅ increment ( day to day) ?

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  6 років тому +2

      Depends on the laptop, from what I've seen so far they're on some pretty thin models so thermal limits can be a problem, but in many cases undervolting can help with that significantly. Depends if you need the extra two cores I guess, 7700hq is still a good CPU I think, working on the comparison video of that vs 8750h soon 😀

    • @unitedalliance2978

    • @ChadKenova
      @ChadKenova 6 років тому

      the i5 8300h is a better choice than the i7 7700hq both have 4 cores 8 threads but it boost higher, But the 8750h is a nice bump in performance over the 7700hq, but undervolting and new thermal paste really helps it. If its mainly gaming your doing the 8300h or 7700hq will be fine. just picked up a acer helios 300 2018 model with the 8750h and 1060 and im loving it best bang for your buck laptop nothing else with similar specs and price have a 144z screen all have 60hz's like the dell g7 and hp omen. And the 300 has a 2 year warranty when most have 1.

      I'll probably compare them in a future video, but off the top of my head I liked the ASUS one better because it was thinner which is pretty important to me. I've actually got a dedicated video on thermals and undervolting the Aorus X5, if I recall it did require it to get full performance, but it will of course depend on the workload applied: ua-cam.com/video/dfbeByZ1thk/v-deo.html

    Something seems not right here. How can the 8850h make such a huge difference in some games? It clocks a little higher but has overall like 3% advantage over the 8750h. But in some of your cases that results in almost 100fps more.
    I guess it is just a bad comparison as the systems' thermal designs differ.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 років тому

      Most games I test seem to be CPU bound at 1080p, at least depending on the graphics it's not uncommon for the CPU to constantly be smashing 100% all the time. There are differences, though as close as I could make it, not perfect.

      I haven't tested it, but I have my doubts, 4K is pretty intensive, even with medium-high settings I find the 1080 struggles in many games, but of course also depends on the game, might be fine in say Overwatch for example. At higher resolutions generally the graphics card will make a much larger difference compared to the CPU, CPU difference is more noticeable in lower resolutions (of course depends on game, this is just speaking generally and not specifically for CPU heavy games).
