BUILDING BAKU: Modern Slavery in the Heart of Azerbaijan

  • Few authoritarian states have worked harder than Azerbaijan to leverage major international events to boost their image on the world stage.
Human rights and democracy advocates have decried the strategy as a “sportswashing” of a regime where opposition parties are crushed, journalists are imprisoned, and oil wealth is controlled by a small clique of ruling elites.
A new OCCRP investigation reveals the human cost of some of Azerbaijan’s projects - and the lengths the state has gone to protect its image when its complicity was unearthed.
Several marquee buildings in Baku, the country’s capital, were built or renovated by men from the Balkans who were shipped to Baku by a company connected to government officials. They were forced to work long hours in grueling conditions for almost no pay. Two died there; many others were marked forever by their time toiling far from home. This is their story.

There is absolutely no record of him working as an Police officer in Baku. Quite the contrary, he worked as a head of migration center in Baku, even the opposition sources claim so. More than half of this case is build on a guy that didn't work as a police officer since 1990s and on top of that he has been arrested for human trafficking by German government. Either reporter doesn't know how to check their sources or this is an intentional lie. A lot of connections that they make are far stretched out, trying to tie everything to the Aliyev family. I agree that there are a lot of corrupted people in our government and this case might be a reality, but I don't agree with the fact that instead of performing real journalism these people straight up trying to attack the president instead of solving these poor people's problems. In my opinion a good journalist should focus on truth and justice not on overthrowing people that you dislike.

Azerbaijan is a country where oil, gas, gold and a lot of minerals. Even the Rothschild or Rockefeller family, in my opinion, came to share in oil in the 90s. I understand why in many countries this happens more money more fertility. Let people continue to rejoice at penny slave labor without realizing thanks to and silently that these workers' institutions for their money built a business for themselves for the money of the people and without workers, no company, no shopping center will work. an ordinary official, a cattle breeder who left the village and does not understand anything in his business, steals billions of dollars. Recently I heard that 75 billion was carried out on a cargo plane, this is an ordinary official and this is not for his entire career. No Bill Gates or anyone else can compare with all this. You just do nothing and steal, and the Nord receives the minimum wage, and then if you find a job, 205 $. And in the villages, in order to get a job as a cleaner in a state institution, they will ask for $ 5,000. And, of course, in this theft both Europe and TC are involved. All this money is partly in England and is beneficial to everyone. And supposedly Europe is not aware of just everything in the share. And unfortunately nothing can be changed. And these investigations while everyone's pockets are stuffed will not help anything, all this is a waste of time.

We still don't know what role played the powerful balkani Mafia. The police needs to chase them, end of story. But it doesn't mean everyone is doing this. It's a crime which does exist in many countries in EU but the political prosecutions are a different issue. It would be better to addrsse them differently and avoid mixing all the topics. Good this raises some sad realities but this may mislead many to think it doesn't happen in their own country. There is plenty of Mafia crimes in Europe that we can't resolve for some reason. Very strange and sad story. Why weren't relatives of these Bosnians looking for them, why government of Bosnia didn't look for its citizens, Bosnia doesn't have embassy in Baku but there are plenty embassies of EU countries - ask through them. And last naïve question - even without passports why didn't these folks from Bosnia escape and go to any of embassies of EU countries in Baku? That would be a big trouble for Serbaz even if they have connections in the government of Azerbaijan. Strange story with former policeman who had to flee to Germany - if he knew someone inside the government was protecting Serbaz, why not to send information about these Bosnians to Bosnia, or to German / UK / US / France or any other major foreign news outlet. That would stop Serbaz right there and would force them to release these folks. I know this because I am from one of these former USSR authoritarian republics, and I know very well how much they care about their image, prestige and don't want to be asked about situations like these - they would immediately order to investigate and release these folks.

I never heard in my life Aze provide work permit to blue collar jobs from overseas and todays UK, France, Germany ..etc suffering from illegal immigration’s and trying to protect illegal immigrants from human trafficking.Generally, this story is not Azerbaijan based problem, all countries have this kinda cases.
