Illusions are products of the mind, and juxtapose reality, in the same way that space juxtaposes time, or the the physical juxtaposes the spiritual. Once Thanos has the reality Stone, the Avengers were not going to defeat him. Strange trying to use the Eye of Aggamotto on Thanos is no better than Starlord using the blaster - bubbles come out (or anything Thanos wants) Thor trying to use the Stormbreaker is no better than Gamora using her Godsword.
