It is possible to remove the internal mechanics without removing the door, even without removing the window. You can even reinstall it. Just loosen everything and carefully slide the inner drive out at an angle.
You're right. I just found it easier for me to do it after removing the door. Couldn't slide the inner drive without doing so.
