  • Sharpening high vanadium and high hardness steels like S90V, 10V, K390, Maxamet can be daunting and many complain about needing specialized equipment. It is true that the proper equipment is necessary but it is very affordable today. Worksharp has many diamond abrasive products with some less than $30 for 2 grits and a strop. The setup shown was $50 for the diamond plates and the paste on the paint stirrer was $15 for a lifetime supply.

Just picked up this system because of the pretty sweet base it comes with, lots of hand clearance. I just wish the ceramic came as a plate like the diamonds. Some aftermarket stones for this would be cool too.

Probably my favorite system for both learning and moving onto the more advanced sharpening techniques. A real gem in my mind!

One time I did a hand satin finish on a Vanadis 10 blade to remove the DLC coating and started at 80 grit ceramic and progressed up to about 800 and when I was done the edge still shaved arm hair with some effort.
    That blew my mind.

Ceramic abrasives will move the steel but it can be brutal! I'm sure that was a battle.
