Gendy Tartakovsky is an absolute legend of the animation industry, and it’s such a shame that he never got to make his Popeye movie when he had the chance. Though I’m still looking forward to this new one.
What the 3-D computer animated "Popeye" feature needs is a new animation studio.
Genndy is just a wonder for animated films!
As I recall, the animated Popeye movie was shelved for The Emoji Movie! Talk about your bad decisions. Anyway, I am really a fan of the Sunday Popeye strip by Randy Mullholland, I kind of wish that he did the daily strips as well.
@@janebyrne6463
How about Warner Bros. Pictures Animation?
It’s been 44 years since, the first Popeye movie from Robin Williams.
Not sure if this is technically one way for the Lost Popeye Animated Film to be revived or not.
I agree with your comment!
@@mayracordero382 Thanks
@@mayracordero382 Thanks, man
So basically there’s 2 Popeye movies in development. One live-action and the other one animated still in development hell to this day it seems.
I need to point out to a lot of people
Sony’s Popeye was never canceled for to make the emoji movie, it was canceled because Sony just didn’t like Genndy’s vision for the movie and they wanted it to be more modern and hip for the young kids.
Sorry about earlier.
I didn't really mean to make one correction look like a problem, honest.
@@thefantasticretroreviewer3941
It’s fine
@@Sean-132 Ok
He (Genndy) departed from the production a few years ago (in 2022), which is a damn shame.
I found three new directors for his replacement.

What video?
@@CreditsBean17Who were the new directors???

Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, and Craig McCracken.

Adam Sandler as Popeye
Sandra Bullock as Olive Oyl
Will Sasso as Wimpy
Zach Galifianakis as Bluto

I don't see adam as popeye.

I choose Jim Carrey.
I’d choose Tom Hardy.
Big show as bluto
I'm looking forward to the live action Popeye a brand new of live action adaptations of Popeye the sailor since 44 years after Robin William hits
Yeah, well, not me.
What a coincidence that we got updates on new movies for Cat in the Hat and Popeye just days of each other. Both of which have had such panned live-action movies, that have become cult favorites in later years.
Me too
Popeye will be in the public domain next year.
Wait really??!!
Yup. It will be 96 years next year.@@diegopinnhammer4083
@@diegopinnhammer4083 Yes.
Dwanye "The Rock" Johnson Is Popeye.
That would be incredible if that was true!
PERFECT
A dark and gritty Popeye live action movie???
If that's true, then I guess that some people just didn't learn from the disaster that was Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. If anything, I hope that this news will enable more people to watch the 1980 live action film. Yes, there was singing. Yes, it was a little weird. But, that film had heart and respect for the original source material. It was especially evident in Robin Williams' performance because he was able to match Popeye's speech and mannerisms as best as possible.
My fancast for this movie is Ryan Gosling as Popeye, Ana de Armas as Olive Oyl. Whats your fancast.
I just recently saw Robin Williams’s Popeye for the very first time only a few evenings ago. I found it to be a fun tribute to the original Max Fleischer cartoons, and I really enjoyed it! I don’t get all the flack that movie got. Not sure how a gritty reboot is going to work, but I’ve got an open mind to it. Still hope the animated film gets made, though!
So another Harold and the Purple Crayon situation?
"Harold and the Purple Crayon situation"?
@@Mario500NOW An animated adaptation of Harold and the Purple Crayon by Sony Pictures Animation was planned but then cancelled, years later a film adaptation would be planned again but in live action and they made Harold a grown man and not a child like the book.
@@Mario500NOWa new trailer for the film had just released, and also was a former culprit of sony’s development revival pipeline.
@@Shantae-June22002But it was actually still part live-action back in 2010. That SPA label was a financial excuse since only The Smurfs and Goosebumps were made as such for no reason.
@@matthewkrenzler1171 That part I never heard about Harold and the Purple Crayon.
I think it's a shame that Roger Langridge's 2013 IDW Popeye limited comic series (which also lead to a one shot Mars Attacks crossover) got completely lost in the shuffle. If anything proved the Sailor Man could be great in the right hands, it was that. A beautiful throwback to Thimble Theater comics instead of just copying the formulaic cartoon shorts. I really REALLY wish Roger would somehow handle the script for a proper Popeye comeback of some sort. Something that could put the adventure aspect into the character and property. I don't know what to make of this live action effort. It seems it could maybe go back to those roots, if we're lucky.
Oh. And I always hated how the Robin Williams Popeye movie was treated. I've seen so many live action adaptions in movie form that have no passion or understanding of the characters to them that Popeye feels like someone actually WANTED to make a Popeye movie and not just crap one out to fulfill a contractual requirement (cough cough Dragonball Evolution).
I wish they still made that animated movie in full color
Sounds like it could be interesting, I'll give it a chance! 👍
That's cool
If the rock will be in it I think he would be good to play bluto
Oh God 🙄
Coming soon the Craig of the creek LIVE ACTION movie
No. No more Cartoon Network live action, please.
Hopefully-Craig McCracken will direct the 3D Popeye Movie! I wish this film to finally be released (and it would be my favorite movie, too).
I just want to project it, Craig McCracken could directed Popeye with Genndy Tartakovsky to project it!
Excited by this! As for casting I’m kind of thinking Daniel Craig. Maybe I’m crazy but he’s got some muscel (but not to much), he’s willing to do a voice, and I just think he’s got a salty seaman vibe to him in general. If the film is more comedic I’m not sure he’s the right pick even if he has shown he can handle some comedy in the past. For a pulpy tone though I like him
I can't believe that jbhifi are selling ww2 steelbooks of movies in 4k for 65$, absolutely ridiculous
I have never seen the 1980s, popeye, the movie. However, I did see the Popeye, the sailor shorts either in black & white and color, and it's pretty entertaining.
I saw the 80s film years ago. If you’re only familiar with the well-known cartoons, the film will appear weird as it’s based more on the original comics.
@BR-jw7pm True I remember seeing popeye DVD trailers on various releases like looney tunes then I watched the history of Popeye a few times and then of a couple of years later, when boomerang is still airing Popeye cartoons at night I have watched them and I enjoyed them.
@@BR-jw7pm People always say that, but it's really more like the cartoon. In the E.C. Segar comic strips, spinach didn't act as an instant steroid, and Bluto was a minor character that only appeared in one story. The Segar strips are much better than the movie. There's not a whole lot of them either, as Segar died pretty young. (The strips continued for decades with other artists, but never were as good.)
I’m happy we’re getting more Popeye but I’m not sure I think Popeye can work in live action. But still that’s a very talented writer
i want popeye animated movie😔
Maybe not...
NOOOOOOOOO! 😨 ¿Por qué?
They should reconsider the Live Action and pick up Genndy Tartokovsky's project!
i'd be down for a gritty reimagining of popeye
Thimble Theatre Origins Popeye The Sailor
A good recent source for screenwriters would be the version of Popeye and the other Thimble Theater characters in both the NEW Sunday episodes in the Popeye strip, along with the "Olive and Popeye" strip, which also has separate Tuesday and Thursday new storylines, starring (not surprisingly) Olive Oyl and Popeye, respectively.
cooool
If they do do a gritty version, Jason Stathham is kinda perfect.
To quote a comment I saw on Instagram, “This is Robin Williams erasure and I won’t fucking HAVE IT!!”
I’m not sure how to feel about this. I kinda feel Popeye works better in animation (what with toon physics and all that) but we’ll have to wait and see.
You're right. Some things are just more suited to animation than live action.
Dwyane as Popeye I could see it despite the skin colour difference (not saying its a bad thing but the internet is going to internet ala the controversy around black Shaggy/Norville in the Velma series)
Uh oh! Here we go again! Hopefully it’s not another subpar movie like the one starring Robin Williams from many years ago.
this better be good
fan cast:
tom hardy as popeye
kane hodder as bluto
nick nolte as poopdeck pappy
I vote that Craig McCracken should directed the 3-D computer animated "Popeye" movie along with Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise (directors of the original "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Hunchback of Notre Dame") for Genndy Tartakovsky's replacement.
A gritty live action Popeye movie starring Dwayne Johnson? I kind of just rather have the animated one. Maybe Gendy could take his vision to another company.
I'm really not keen on that gritty version of Popeye in your thumbnail. Doubt I'd see it if that was the direction, honestly.
Couldn't they do something more like that Tintin movie from 2011 and go halfway between realistic and cartoon?
Now a sims movie coming!
It’s about time we see a grand return for Popeye!
No.... Just No oh god no please 😞
Not this agian! Popeye should never go live action agian
Just give us that animated film please
Like i swear to god this feels like an early april fools day joke
Hope this stars the Rock
Why did replace the Popeye Movie with an Emoji Movie again? They had Tom Kenny, Grey Griffin and everything; also there was a live-action Popeye movie before
It was never canceled for the emoji movie, it was canceled because Sony just didn’t like Genndy’s vision for the movie and they wanted it to be more modern for the young kids.
It needs celebrity voice actors.

It has been announced lots of times since 2014 and seems unlikely, not to be negative but just giving you a Point.
Those announcements were specifically about the animated film. This is a new announcement about a live action film that has entered early stages of production.
@@DaveLeeDownUnder
I'm not happy about seeing that.
@@DaveLeeDownUnder so, if we getting a popeye live action movie, does this means that the popeye animated movie is dead?
Hell to the absolute no! They better not ruin this beloved character!
Words can't even describe how EXCITED I am for new Popeye content, even if it's gonna be live action. I legit thought that movie Popeye's Voyage: The Quest for Pappy was the last completed project we'll ever get. Even tho it's gonna come out in 5 years, I CAN'T WAIT😁!
Oh… oh no….
What?
HAPPY 95 YEARS POPEYE!
I remember seeing the Popeye Film with Robin Williams
Those fake AI trailers were created to copy the trailer for my fan film. People were comparing me to the Rock and then these weird trailers started popping up. A lot of them were using my footage in the beginning but got taken down and so they resulted to using AI and footage of the rock instead.
I would have prefer animated but eh, close enough.
What if popeye returns to paramount global and done like sonic movie?
Maybe with Paramount Animation
Given the long history between King Features and Paramount it wouldn't surprise me if the animated film would instead go to them. That is once Sony's film license ends.
I hope Williams' legacy can survive
Robin Williams was awesome though the movie was on the cheesy side and I don't like musicals as a child I thought it was hilarious.
Do a video about Babar the elephant Please? The evolution and voice actors and voice comparisons of the character Babar the elephant?
Sorry, no current plans for a Babar video
@@DaveLeeDownUnder why please do in 2025 or 2026?
Sorry, I don’t plan that far ahead. I cannot confirm what videos I’ll be working on in a year or two. But currently, I have no plans for it.
*WHAT!!!* WHO WAS THE ONE WHO TOLD ME THIS EARLIER
Can you make an evolution of power rangers
Sorry, that would take me months to make, and I’m not the right person for that.
Give Jason Statham a shot of the iconic role he will do lot better than Robin Williams.
I am not excited. We won't get a good Popeye project until he goes into the public domain. Then someone who actually is a fan will be able to make it and not screw it up.
I want a new Popeye animated movie!
There Will be no the Popeye Animated Movie and the Adventure Time Movie! Both of these movies got cancelled.
I don’t want to live on this planet anymore :/
Gotta admit, feel kinda split on this one. On the one hand, it’s really refreshing to see a Popeye reimagining that doesn’t feel watered down or overly childish. On the other hand, I think it’s possible to go too far in the other direction, you know? Like, I don’t want this movie to loose any of the charm that makes us like Popeye in the first place
Well this is going to bomb, popeye hasn't been relevant in years.
The Sony cgi animated film of the beloved spinach munching, pipe-blowing, and muscle bounded sailor might as well be dead…but who knows it may be still alive (citation needed). 🙂
That pretty much feels like a missed opportunity if the emoji movie never got greenlit. 😔
It was never canceled for the emoji movie, it was canceled because Sony just didn’t like Genndy’s vision for the movie and they wanted it to be more modern for the young kids.
@@Sean-132 from the looks of the visuals...that certainly looks like a genuine kids to adults movie to me, and would've been a good throwback to the classic theatrical cartoon days...Didn't they see that?
Just sayin...
@@Woobuggy848You know Sony, they don't see a lot of things.
@@Woobuggy848 What I heard is that they wanted Popeye to be a teenager, not have a pipe, not have tattoos, and not be a sailor, because "kids don't know what sailors are". Genndy got fed up with these stupid notes and left.
I’m not really sure about a new live action, Popeye movie, I was looking forward to gennndy Popeye movie I really wanted to see that Movie instead of the live action, one
For the Live-Action Version, Pipes (Tobacco) not included.
Pipes is real
Dont tell me live action of a talking Pipes
Can you do a evolution of south park? I just really want to the whole origin of cartman, kyle, stan, and kenny, So can you do it? PLEEEEEEASE?????? 😢
Sorry, I don't have any plans for a South Park Evolution. I'm not even really a fan of the show, so dedicating a month of my life to making a video about it just doesn't seem very appealing to me!
This sounds like a terrible idea. I can't believe no one let Gendy make his animated movie but someone greenlit this.
Popeye was the first shounen protagonist: Short, lanky, and incredibly powerful.
So I'm not really interested in a professional wrestler playing the role.
Pretty fast, too.
When?
This is a bad idea for multiple reasons. Honestly, Popeye should be a kids and kid at heart favorite given his often moral nature that has developed over the years. Making a dark and gritty take is not what the franchise needs.
I honestly don't see how this is suddenly a terrible idea right now.
Have to disagree. Popeye was never divised as a 'kids' brand, and the original Fleischer cartoons certainly weren't designed just for kids (neither was the original live-action film).
@@DaveLeeDownUnder That is very true
@@DaveLeeDownUnder okay, i did watch this video. So, do you have idea what happened to the popeye animated movie? Is it dead?
Where's your cartoon evolution video Garfield Pink Panther Wallace and Gromit and The Cat in the Hat
What do you mean “where is it?” I never said it would be any time soon. They are videos I plan to do at some point this year. You wont have any of them for months… in fact, you wont have the Pink Panther this year at all.
It takes me a full month to make one of these videos, so asking me why I haven’t done four videos is insane. Please be patient.
This movie is going to be a total flop
I don't think doing a dark version of Popeye isn't going to do well. Look what happened in 2017 with Lionsgate's attempt at the Power Rangers.
I could see a live action/animated take.
