1984 was the time of the Apple ad at the Super Bowl, when we all youngsters despised whatever was old, and hippy music was our parents' --not ours. I also loved the guy throwing away the hippy medal despite the other kid saying "no man, we can still use it". To me, it's always meant that Devo could start with that old Hendrix's tune, violate it, and finally regurgitate something fresh out of it. Which is the principle of art, by the way.
HAPPY BELATED , PROFESSOR MARK MOTHERSBAUGH !!!!!!, AND REST IN PEACE , ALAN MYERS, GREAT DRUMMER OF DEVO , I BELIVE THIS ALAN LAST ALBUM ON DEVO !!!! GOD SPEED ALAN !
Have loved this since it came out on 'Shout!'.and have been a devolutionized spudboy for years(since their beginning).Glad to see so many on here that still enjoy this video!
True it would have been nice For DEVO to have taken more Videos from The Shout album DEVO was to host ,the New year Party on MTV 1984 And The Shout album Tour Was cancelled unfortunately?
Yup,and they used treadmills in their performance back with the "New Traditionalists" tour years before some R&B performer did as well. They're always well ahead when it comes to innovation!
let' hear ! three cheers for DEVO ,DEVO ,DEVO !, Duty Now For The Future!, and DEVO is the next future legends to be voted in the rock and roll hall of fame !
Am I imagining things, or did they just do digital morphing several years before Michael jackson did? Yep, they did - Devo was always light years ahead of everybody else.
Mark has the first version of Google glasses on his face here... they were testing it back in the 80's!! And while Hendrix would have loved this... apparently Hendrix's father did not and when they tried to rerelease Shout, they denied letting Devo use it.
This is one of the most awesome videos from one of the best bands (and most underappreciated) ever. Now, can we get a good copy of Penetration in the Centerfold somewhere?
I grew up with Devo since whip it...peek a boo etc....didn't get into this as a kid, even though I loved jimi hendrix and Devo....in retrospect ....this is another gem outta the 80s...I really liked the kids laughing at the smashing hullabaloo at the end....Patrick
I been searching for this many years and amazed and happy to finally see again since the days of MTV where it was barely played. I had only remembered the breakers at the begining - and I'm probably not the only one... then again i might be. Black Devo Fan
What's funny about this video now is that the references to the 60s and those 80's outfits are both retro now ;) I always loved this crazy DEVO remake... some won't appreciate it, but DEVO always had a sense of nostalgia and humor
I guess if I was the Hendrix family, I would have been taken aback by Jimi's resurrection, but it was both done with good humor and respect. Jimi Hendrix's second coming is something many of us mutants would like to see.
If You're going to cover someone else's music, You must do all You can to make the song Your own. DEVO managed to do that very well with Satisfaction and this song. As for this video, it has to be one of the stranger and better ones made in the 80's.
Damn, if Devo encore tomorrow night in Manchester by floating around in their R U Experienced suits, I'll just shit. I forgot just how wonderful this video was!
I TOTALLY AGREE , DEVO SHOULD HAVE THIS CLASSIC VIDEO BE ON THE NEXT NEW DVD , GO TO CLUB DEVO.COM AND SEE YES DEVO SHOULD HAVE ,SHOUT REMASTED ON WARNER BROTHERS ,CD WITH THOSE B- SIDES LIKE GROWING PAINS, AND OTHER GEMS TOO, PLUS HAVE , TOTAL DEVO,1988. SMOUTH NODDLE MAPS, 1990 REMASTED TOO !!!!!!
Aright, Auron1186...I'm 14 and i love DEVO and the music of the 80's...If you think it's "Nerdy" Or "Geeky" fine. But some people appreciate this kind of music..DEVO really inspires me...And without DEVO some of the music you listen to today might not even be here..And they are called ENERGY DOMES..."You'd better find out before you open your mouth."
AND I VOTE YES YES AND YES , THANK YOU FOR REMINDING ME TO VOTE FOE DEVO , AND LOG INTO DEVO THE NEXT FUTURE LEGENDS AND VOTE YES ITS A LOGIACAL THING TO DO !
Most people never got DEVO. I think them covering this song was thier furtive way of saying "hey, btw, did you ever happen to trip on us? Yeah, we're good like that." And they really, really were one hell of a trip to "experience," if you catch my drift. Meh, no one drops acid anymore, I guess.
-Jimi loved THE GOON SHOW from BBC radio back in the fifties -The idea of him cackling (probably in a cool New York accent) at Spike Milligan & Peter Sellar`s crazy surreal comedy is a timeless image.
I DISAGREE, THIS WAS THE THAT BROKE NEW SONDS GROUNDS , AND WITH THE HELP FROM JIM MOTHERSBAUGH , HE IS THE BROTHER OF MARK AND BOB 1, WITH THE HELP OF THE FAIRLIGHT COMPUTER KEYBROAD,, THIS SHOUT LP WAS GREAT FOR TOP 40 RADIO AIR PLAY, ESPESCALLY THE SONG PUPPET BOY,SHOULD HAVE BEEN A LONG 12 INCH VERSION FOR THE DANCE CLUBS , YES THE SHOUT LP WAS AHEAD OF TIME,, DEVO WAS TO PERFORM SOME THE SONGS ON THE MTV NEW YEARS BALL SHOW , AND YES ON THE SHOUT TOUR DRUMMER ALAN MYERS WAS TO USE TWO ,
Hell'ya they were one of the first. In adition to being extraordinary musicians, Devo were also very creative visual and performing artists who pionered music video, took musical theatre to a new level and began a whole new revolution in imagery and performance. Now did Hendrix do THAT at all? Lets give Devo their due. They were true and total renaisance guys.
Like a old sci-fi B-Movie with the classic rocker of Jimmi Hendrix being brought to life by "Peace Radiation", and only Devo could stop it with their 50's Future tech. Take it as what you will, I wanna see Devo in their own Music Video Movie. Also, the dude's shoulder moves strangely. It's... weird, about as strange as them floating like balloons and Jimmi Hendrix coming back to life. Still good music.
I am with you. I alway asked my mother why they looked like they did. Then she told me where to get the album with “Whip It” and have been hooked, ever since. And Mark Mothersbaugh did a theme on Pee-Wee’s Playhouse.
Never saw this video, thanks a lot! I bought "Shout" the album when it first came out but was at sea so no MTV time. Very awesome post! I think the Hendrix estate was a big freakin mess and it was all about dollars. This was DEVO right before they jumped the shark with Total Devo.
Reading those comments, it seems to me that i'm obliged to CHOOSE between 60's and 80's. That's stupid. Hendrix is amazing and so is Devo. Both contributed greatly to music. I understand Devo's critics. And I keep being a 60-lover, hippie-wannabe.
The moment I heard with my own ears they reused some of the music in "Too Much Paranoias" (Devo, 1978), I had to wonder if they were making a hidden point or just being cheap. Given it's the "synth dotted plipping" noise at the start, it might be a hidden point...
Nice work Gadgetman! I saw this ONCE on t.v. back in the day (1983?) & then never again until now - it's actually BETTER than I remember. Those ridiculous self-inflating costumes remind me of Vic Reeves strangle enough (anyone else get that?).
Because this wasn’t on the Truth About De-Evolution DVD I got when I was 12, it was kind of like this forbidden video for several years, and then I somehow caught it on VH1 Classics, which was amazing. After that, I kept checking the channel whenever I got a chance, hoping I’d somehow see it again. Now I can just watch it on UA-cam.
Just as Mick Jagger once said that DEVO's cover of "Satisfaction" was his favorite version, I'm sure Jimi Hendrix would have found this mind-blowing.
You've got to be kidding me. Both covers are unlistenable garbage.
❤️ So true!
"not neccessarilly beautiful, but mutated"

Devo is forever, we are all devolutionized, whether we admit it or not....are we not men? We are Devo.
1984 was the time of the Apple ad at the Super Bowl, when we all youngsters despised whatever was old, and hippy music was our parents' --not ours. I like that interpretation!
I always saw it as “we don’t need to continue old ways, but peace is something we should hold onto the idea of”
@@LordToasterOven Thanks for refreshing my legacy comment. I uphold my words of yore - celebrating the 44th year of my Devo fandom... TOIL IS STUPID 😎
how can anyone be pissed at this?!?! they brought jimmy back from the dead. we should bow down before this.

Who’s gonna tell him?
Jimi Hendrix would be proud of this rendition of his famous song.
DEVO The TRUE Pioneers Of Rock and Roll Music Videos !
DEVO is Ahead of Their Time !
One of my favourite videos.
When Jimi pops out the coffin and all the little blond haired drones sway in the crowd, c'est vraiment magnifique.
oh man, as awesome as i remembered.
Amen, this is pure gold. One of the coolest and most avant garde music videos out there.
Man...these dudes are weird as fuck lol. I love them!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARK MOTHERSBAUGH DEVO LEGENDS!
this is a great work of art, and DEVO deserves a big award !
watch the sunshine from the bottom of the sea, oh planet earth are you experienced ??????? DEVO RULES FOR EVER AND EVER
maybe best cover of this song i ever heard. and one of my favorite devo songs
Have loved this since it came out on 'Shout!'.and have been a devolutionized spudboy for years(since their beginning).Glad to see so many on here that still enjoy this video!
Very underrated cover
Devo is one of my favorite bands. Almost all their songs sounded good. They had few that were okay.
One of the most underrated acts in music history covering one of the most underrated!
True it would have been nice

@@guyboost7311 no Warner bros wasn’t backing them up financially
Easily one of the best rock songs covered by a new wave artist. This was genius at the time. It still is.
some of the trippiest shit ever. i love it.

Brilliant. They do deserve an award. My favorite Hendrix track.

I love this song! Only Devo could put a NewWave spin on a 60s classic! P.S. Devo was right-we are de-evolving.
Greatest video of all time! Sublime use of the medium.
Wonderful cover! Never seen this till tonight. Hendrix lives on!

Very Good! Funny, criative, fantastic!!!

I dunno why but for some reason this video scared the living shit out of me as a 7 year old.
All of DEVOS videos scared me as a kid, now the truth about DEVOLUTION can be told.

Heavy wave and Jimi was a heavy wave! Hansen's lick is great! Never heard it before tonight awesome!

The best, least known Devo video.

Alot better than I remembered it being, pretty funny when old JH leaps out of the coffin!
Hey, this is a pretty good version of the song.

I like the original by Jimi Hendrix and I like Devo's version too. This was obviously a triibute to Hendrix.
