Scrambler Slam: Ducati vs. Triumph

  • What’s a scrambler? In decades past, a scrambler was a street motorcycle stripped down and optimized for off-road use by way of swapping-in high-pipes, wider handlebars, semi-knobby tires, and differently styled fenders, seat and tank. Sometimes, it was an unmodified street model given a scrambler or street scrambler designation. In essence, it’s a cool name meant to convey agile sportability regardless of the bike’s dirt or street intentions.
    The Ducati Scrambler Icon and Triumph Scrambler both adhere to, and extoll the values of, their predecessors, but which Scrambler is the better one to scramble upon? That depends on which definition of scrambler you prefer.

    Most people will make their choice based on one thing: styling. If you want classic, get the Triumph. If you want modern, get the Ducati.

      J.A.Ratt85 The 270° firing order is what makes it sound so good. Triumph, BSA and Yamaha 650's were all 360° twins. Honda has 180° twins.

      ***** I tell people this all the time, better to get a T100 and mod it than to buy a Scrambler. Most people buying these things immediately put an Arrow pipe on there which also sounds great. Stock Bonnevilles don't sound great due to their stock exhaust.

    Well unlike most people who have commented, I bought both. I purchased a 2015 Triumph Scrambler in November 2014 and got my Scrambler Ducati in March 2015. They are hard to compare like-for-like, as they are so different in all but the name. The look of the Triumph is more authentic and I added Triumph loud pipes so it sounded amazing. However, in every other respect, the Ducati is the better bike. Fuelling, brakes, ride quality (not perfect, but better), performance and generally easier to live with. The chrome on the Triumph is really hard to clean in places and the wire spokes started to rust after 6-weeks. Yes, you can tune more power from the Bonny, but why bother, the engine can't handle it with the 270deg crank on this version and you can never get rid of all the weight and higher centre of gravity. If you want a lightweight, mid-performance bike that is great to ride and easy to live with, which catches lots of attention from a wider range of other riders, the Scrambler Ducati is miles better.

    Owned a triumph thruxton for 1 1/2 years but 21,000 miles on it. Absolutely loved it and i beat the fuck outa hit and never had the slightest problem. Wheelies, nasty rutted dirt roads, cornfields, mudding and just straight up hooliganism. Dropped it several times and ran over plenty of shit i probably should not have still a bulletproof bike. I may have opted for the the ducati if it were available at the time but now after my experience with the thruxton id definitely own another triumph modern classic and probably will some day.

    The Triumph is a true scrambler. Ducati just used the scrambler name to get into that market segment and get a piece of the pie. They should have named it "Monster Lite" or "Monster Blast" (sorry Eric). As far as speed, the Duc will be faster in the twisties, but if you are riding sweepers and freeway, the Triumph is the comfort choice, and even at a higher price, it is the better value.

    I HATE when reviewers pick a winner based on on-road performance and speed alone. Yes, the Duc will beat the Triumph in the twists, we get it! But the whole POINT of a Scrambler is to have SOME off-road capability as well. Plus, the Triumph would be a better 2-up bike, AND would be more comfortable for a longer haul...NONE of which you gave it credit for!!! Dead giveaway when he was talking about switching out the handlebars on the Ducati. The point of these bikes is NOT to change them into a sport bike. If you want sport bike speed and sport bike handling and a sport bike posture on the road, BUY a sport bike....if you want a cafe racer, buy or build a cafe racer!! You may PREFER the Duc because it performs more like a crotch rocket, but as far as I'm concerned by the TRUE measure of a "scrambler" the Triumph wins...and would DEFINITELY be my pick of the factory scrambler lot!

    • @CrankyBuddha
      @CrankyBuddha 9 років тому +10

      Gary Stackhouse This is just a suggestion- but maybe watch the entire video before you spend a bunch of time typing out a comment. At 4:15 they blatantly say that the Triumph is the better bike in terms of comfort and actual offroad use.

    • @garystackhouse5787
      @garystackhouse5787 9 років тому +7

      ...and then go on to say the Duc wins anyway... I DID watch the entire video, thanks. I happen to disagree with their conclusion, along with the basic underlying premise with which they (and MANY OTHER reviewers of motorcycles) seem to be judging the bikes... "fastest in the twisties" (or, alternatively, "feels most like my Sports bike") wins.

    The funny thing is that the triumph is usually criticized for poor fueling and feeling bad on/off like was being described....so they're saying it's ok here and the Ducati is actually problematic in that regard - which is really making a statement about how bad it is. Very unfortunate.
    That all being said, both are slammin bikes in their own regard and I wouldn't hesitate to own either.

      DanDude2905 Actually the triumph is meant to look like scrambler. That's why it has high side exhaust pipes. The ducati... is just simply called a scrambler to fool the stupid people who will buy it thinking it is a scrambler. Doesn't matter anyway. • @mauriziopescatori4606
    @mauriziopescatori4606 9 років тому +18

    My two cent' worth: I am old enough to have owned an original 1971 Ducati 450 Scrambler in the days when they were still selling new... so I know what I'm talking about. A Scrambler is NOT an offroad bike, rather it is a "poor man's dual sports", a "naked version" of the Varadero/Versys/VStrom if you will. So to claim "poor or better offroad performance" is actually wrong, in the way that that is not what the bikes are built for; the Scrambler is built for dirt roads, which are dirt, but are still roads. They are not meant for fording rivers or jumping over obstacles like a Yamaha TT or a Honda XR.
    True, in the 1950's offroad races were made with scramblers, but that's 50, 60 years ago, and design has improved. Nobody in his ight mind would consider fittng clipon bars to a HD Sportster and expect it to handle like a café racer just because it's called "Sportster". So the Triumph Scrambler is just the naked "poor bother" to the Trumph Tiger, and the Ducati Scrambler is the grandson to the original Ducati Scrambler of 40, 50 years ago. 'Nuff said ;)

    • @DivineMisterAdVentures
      @DivineMisterAdVentures 9 років тому

      Maurizio Pescatori Well, yeah, except they do have an "ENDURO" model scrambler ... what's THAT? eh? Think that would be a better match up? Maybe they did a change up on THE ONE ITEM - flywheel weight - maybe gear ratio - maybe throttle response curve...? You know this is the general idea....? It's the COMPUTER AGE ... and we've been doing this kind of fine tuning now for 40 years.

    • @mauriziopescatori4606
      @mauriziopescatori4606 9 років тому

      Ion-Christopher DiMeglio Excuse me... exactly WHO has an "enduro model" in their lineup? Triumph? The Tiger is a street-going dual sports, no more no less than Yamaha SuperTénerè or BMW GS; Ducati? Their Multistrada is as offroad as an Aprilia Capo Nord; and Ducati Hypermotard is exactly that, a Hypermotard. If you think slapping a "Scrambler" badge and knobby tires will make a bike a true scrambler you're thinking KTM, or Honda XR-R or Yamaha TT-R. As for "the computer age", you can sit on it if that's your kind of thing, but you have to work on valve diameters, cam profiles and port shape and length before you get all whizzi kiddy with me. I don't know about you, but I'm 55, I'm *Old School*. I dremel my heads, never mind PCs and ECUs.

      @just-dl 8 років тому

      Jo Gordon Weight and horses aren't the only criteria. The triumph seemed to get the nod "off-road." Frankly, I'd call that the number one criteria. But, "scrambler" probably doesn't have a single, definitive definition...so, it's pretty dang subjective, no matter how you slice it. Did you buy the Ducati, then? (they're both called Scrambler, so I wasn't sure.) Do you like it? how does it (did it?) work out?

    • @jogordon1530

      +Dan L Dan - I've been disabled for six years due to nerve damage during a kidney transplant. I had a 2013 BMW F700gs and I simply could not handle it as I no longer had the stamina I had prior to my transplant. I wanted to downsize. The Ducati fit my bill as to weight, size and power. I just wanted a bike to hop on and go. Just a bike to ride around town on my good days - a basic bike. At first I was not used to the low torque of the bike. But as I have driven it more and more, I'm really loving it! I have no intention of driving it off-road but if I had to get somewhere on dirt, the little Ducati, I'm sure would handle it well as its so small. At five foot five, I love the low seat and the bike is a breeze on back roads. It will handle the highway but for me, driving around town and the twisties is all I want and the Ducati is a great bike for my situation.

    Well I think the Ducati has its name due to keep the tribute to the 1962 one.
    Also I think that all the shape of the bike was designed with this idea of tribute, and this is why the exhaust is low, and not as it is suposed to be in a scrambler as the word means.
    I love the Ducati Scrambler and I think they made a very good job keeping the retro lines in the bike but kind of addaptation to the modern times. It seems a very cool bike for me

Now it's the opposite, the Hondas, KTMs and Moto Guzzis tend to have higher seat heights while Triumph chases Harley's market with 26-28 inch seat heights on most non-adv models.

      MCTeck Yeah there's a lot that could have been done easier with those things, the problem is that it's a boutique engine built with Japanese parts instead of being based on the old twins. 4 or 5 main cranks with clam shell bearings were not needed and just makes the engine much wider and heavier. There's guys with 250k miles on classic Triumphs that have never had the bottom end apart. (watch Brittown for a great example) there was no need to change the design unless it was because Hinkley Triumph couldn't squire the rights to use the old design or if it was purely to be able to buy parts instead of having to make them.
      865cc fuel injected making the same power as a stock carbed 650 is incredibly sad, especially with the extra weight of the new engine.

    If the fuel injection is anything like my old 916. It is very important to adjust the throttle cable carefully and often. There is an adjuster on the handlebar, and another on the throttle body. Keep it snug. Any slack creates the problem that they were complaining about.

    I think they look cool, especially the Ducati. But if you are looking for a "do it all, on road/off road" bike, why not just get a supermoto? Neither of these bikes are going to tear up a canyon road like a sport bike, they wont be any real use for long trips so they are relegated to city/around town use and they are not really capable off road.

    I have a hard time seeing the Ducati as a scrambler. It reminds me more of a middle weight urban street fighter. Or if you will, another reincarnation of the Monster. It should be compared to similar bikes such at an FZ-07, NC700-X, or the SFV650. Not the Triumph.
    The Triumph embodies the Scrambler name and heritage. It's built to be a modern day classic. That's how it's marketed and that's what people look for when they think of purchasing this particular style of bike.
    I'm not Ducati bashing when I say this, but they didn't seem to go into cost of ownership issues. The Triumph has a reputation for being essentially bullet proof and relatively easy with maintenance. Ducati's in general have a reputation to being a little more fickle with maintenance requirements.
    Moto Guzzi is putting out a Scrambler of their own. Much like the Triumph, it seems to be using a classic style chassis and their traditional V-7 motor. I would think a review pitting those two against each other would be a better comparison.
