The inconsistent sizing is not just a problem over, say, size 14. This is a big problem with Amazon and Old Navy both. I just don't shop for clothes on Amazon or Old Navy. Like you, I am happy to pay a higher price for a perfect fit. Talbot's always has sales, and yes, much more consistent sizing. It's worth paying more!!
I agree. I am trying to have options for people that want more affordable clothing, but it just doesn't work for my body. Hoping that Talbots has a big sale this coming weekend, so many pretty fall items!
This is so true! Old Navy is so inconsistent with sizing that when I shop there in person I always take a couple of items in the same size into the fitting room. Costco is the ABSOLUTE worst for inconsistent sizing and they don’t have fitting rooms. I’ve measured pairs of jeans at Costco labeled the same size and their waists are different by at least 2 inches.
Cathy, as a general rule, people with blue tones in their skin don't do as well in warm brown tones (jacket). As soon as you put on the coat in black you looked so much better. I just loved it. Black is a difficult color as we age but you do so well in it. Thanks for showing us this haul.
I, too, was under the impression that a person with blue undertones don't look as good in browns but although I hated that brown fake leather jacket, I was surprised and thought Cathy looked absolutely fabulous in that color. I guess it depends on the shade one wears of a color.
Cathy, that shade of red is very flattering! Cool tones work best for me, too and cool reds can be hard to find. As for black, there are many shades of black. Soft black in a soft fabric is not necessarily "ageing" like shiny black or deep, deep ink black. IMO,

The jeans and red top are very flattering. Many years ago, I started wearing plain black and navy coats and dressed them up with colorful scarves and colored leather gloves. These accessories made the coats (and myself!) look more put together. The different colors meant I never got tired of the coats and could wear them year after year. I think the black coat you tried on has great potential.

I often find that black jeans from Old Navy are small. One of their employees told me that black dyes require higher heats that shrink the jeans I only buy them in store so I can try them.

I have seen many models wearing blazers opened and not looking close to being able to being closed. I think if we can find one that fits perfectly in the shoulders we shouldn’t worry about buttoning it up. That way, the look is actually leaner. What do you think!
I think that maybe a blazer isn't for me, and that's why I never like the ones that I try. Someone suggested a knit type of material, so I may give that a go. I mean I can live without a blazer, I've survived this far without one but I'm always looking. 😉

I have to say that, for some reason, I find that black jeans run smaller than blue jeans in the same size and style. It has happened to me numerous times over the years. It has happened to me with Talbots, J.Jill, Gap, etc. It's just something that I've noticed. I bought my husband a pair of his usual Gap jeans in black and it happened to him, too. Not sure why this is an issue, but it's my experience.
I always have an issue with arms….I bought a Ralph Lauren wrap dress and I loved it but I had to take it to a tailor for the sleeves! The struggle is real….

Thank you for the great video, Cathy. I actually very often come to your channel when I am feeling a bit anxious and need calm, as you give off an aura of peace and I love your approach. Incidentally, I am a small-sized person and I also find very inconsistent sizing and even fabric weight among the SAME shirts or bottoms. For example, a shacket I recently bought from Costco was lighter weight in the red colour and heavier weight in the beige. Happens often nowadays across a few stores, I've noticed. Love those blue loafers with the navy pants - it really does give an elongated effect. I agree with you on what you are returning. The biker jacket and the beige set don't appear to be your best colours (as opposed to pinks and blues - btw, TOTALLY love that beautifully patterned blue dress you bought earlier) - really, really looks good on you! Also, in your new "header", you may wish to add the word "to" in the first sentence. I also hate blazers and button down tops as I have wide shoulders and just feel so constrained! Congrats on how your channel is GROWING SO QUICKLY - you deserve it !!!! I joined when you were at around 38K subscribers I think.
I love seeing these videos, even when things don't work out. And I enjoy seeing them modeled on someone much closer to what I look like than the 20 year old, size 2, 5'10" models that Old Navy likes to use. Sometimes when I like an item and it fits good I'll get it in multiple colors and it seems the black items are always a tad bit smaller. And that's with things ranging from shirts to pants to bras even! I've always wondered why that was and if it was just me experiencing that. I really love how the jeans look, it's like they were made for you. It's too bad some of the items didn't work because they looked good on you but when they don't fit properly, why keep them. The items look fine to me but you can give us your feedback as to how they really fit and I appreciate that.

I feel your pain Cathy... I used to try to really like Old Navy and Amazon clothes but they just never fit me. I'm 4'11 so I have to have it in petite. I really liked the red top on you and the coat but you are so right consistency is not there with those stores. I appreciate when you mention adding clothes into your wardrobe that are investment pieces. They fit correctly and make you feel good. I heard someone say "Buy once and buy well" Cheaper isn't always better and at 50 I'm wanting the investment over a cheaper price point.

I find petite sizes run small. Im 5'0" and wear a 1x in regular sizes but I have to get a 2x if I buy petite. Luckily i sew and can alter regular sizes. It must be so frustrating for others who don't sew. This was a great video. Thanks for sharing. ❤

My shoulders are the shape of a Christmas tree so I have a difficult time finding a good fitting blazer and actually coat too. I feel your pain. I did not like that Moto jacket on you either. I thought the belt/band at the bottom made your stomach look much bigger than what it really is and as an apple shaped woman myself I know we don't need that!
Cathy, I’m a size 10-12 and sizing is inconsistent in those sizes as well. I too have never found a flattering blazer. I have liked a knit blazer by Ralph Lauren but I guess that’s really more a sweater but check it out. I like the look of the plaid blazer - maybe you can find something like that at Talbots. As for the rest, the red tee shirt and the pink shirt are nice, but that's about it. I find Old Navy so inconsistent in sizing - but at least they offer petites!
I also have rounded shoulders & arms and being very short, I try to avoid anything “drop shoulder” (and cap or puff sleeves), as I find they always hit right at the widest part of my upper arms😒 But a great way to get a “sharper”shoulder (without broadening/widening!!🤩) is to use small shoulder pads. They attach in different ways to most bra straps and they work really well with most blouses, shirts, t shirts, jackets & even coats if the material isn’t to heavy/stiff! I really like the red t shirt and dark blue jeans set, it suits you very well☺👍🏼
I was thinking shoulder pads would be great on Kathy, but I was hesitant to say so. I am short 5.1 and a 2X my problem is pants are to wide in the hip if they fit my waist,I have all this extra fabric on the sides,so annoying.
As far as the the shoulder/sleeve not being in the wrong place, it's intended to have a drop seem so it is actually perfect on you.The collar is intended to be a stand up color to frame your face.. I think if you go back to the camel coat you might see that it actually fits you beautifully I think with a colorful silky scarf around your neck it will be amazing.
I feel your position on blazers. I can't wear them either for the same reasons. I've made a permanent decision to wear sweaters. When I can find one styled like a Blazer it's a bonus.
Try Chicos for blazers, they have black, brown and denim that are very cute. I believe they come in petites too. But yes, they sure aren’t Old Navy prices.
Kathy, Torrid had some blazers that had a little stretch that were really nice. I am also an apple body girl and I did find them there when I was plus sized. I do like Old Navy for casual clothes. I actually got the white shirt(eyelet sleeves and around the bottom) you got but I got it in black and I love it! Good luck on finding that blazer, don't despair I am sure you will find one that looks awesome on you!

I always size up with black jeans and dark grey jeans for any brand. They fit smaller because of the dyeing process. I recently had that problem with dark "smoke grey" Levi's
I have the same issues. Pants are often too long, black pants usually too tight. Blazers just don’t look good on me, they aren’t proportioned correctly. I love the flannel shirt! I had originally bought the white runners.....but they caused a blister on my heel :( .....You look stunning in red! The biker jacket is cool also....too bad it was snug around the chest. Blazers are very hard for me too--sleeves are always too long and it makes me look boxy. That pink flannel is so cute! Especially with the sleeves rolled up.

I am in one of those years where I have had to rdo a full refresh to replace and update a lot of my wardrobe. OLd Navy sizing is all over the place. I have gotten the same item in different colors and had them all fit differently. I also see people mentioning this issue in thereviews.

I bought so many of their flannel shirts and love them! They do shrink a little bit even though you wash them in cold water. Be aware… I’m 5’7 and I had to return many jeans. They are very too long! Their skinny jeans fit very well but skinny is out of style so I’m really sad! 😆 I ended up buying two pair of Levi’s mid-rise straight jeans for 32,7$ at Walmart and they fit amazingly. I had to size up a size (18) though just so you know if you want to check that out.

It's so nice that you model for us, I used to think I'd like wearing a blazer even though I seldom need to dress up but they just never seemed to suit my body so I stopped trying. The red top looks great on you with the jeans. Sizing can be so unpredictable here in the U.K. too. I think black is just fine. I would look washed out if I didn’t wear make up when wearing black. As you suggested, a colourful scarf with black looks so classy. Love L🌺🌺

I think you look great in red! The leather jacket had that belt that hit you in the wrong place as well ..IMO ... keep looking you will find one that works! For the blazer, I highly recommend going to the thrift store and looking in the men's section ....find one you like and pay to have it tailored!

That blazer is not too tight! When you are not used to wearing them, they take some getting used to. It’s because it has no stretch. Try looking for a knit blazer in a little shorter length that doesn’t overwhelm you. I’d go for navy, charcoal, or a soft black. One with a contrasting piping would be attractive. I’m short too, but I have broad shoulders and a larger bust. Some blazers/jackets make me look like a linebacker so I’m very aware of the struggle. Sticking with softer fabrics helps.

Thank you for the great video, Cathy. I actually very often come to your channel when I am feeling a bit anxious and need calm, as you give off an aura of peace and I love your approach. Incidentally, I am a small-sized person and I also find very inconsistent sizing and even fabric weight among the SAME shirts or bottoms. For example, a shacket I recently bought from Costco was lighter weight in the red colour and heavier weight in the beige. Happens often nowadays across a few stores, I've noticed. Love those blue loafers with the navy pants - it really does give an elongated effect. I agree with you on what you are returning. The biker jacket and the beige set don't appear to be your best colours (as opposed to pinks and blues - btw, TOTALLY love that beautifully patterned blue dress you bought earlier) - really, really looks good on you! Also, in your new "header", you may wish to add the word "to" in the first sentence. I also hate blazers and button down tops as I have wide shoulders and just feel so constrained! Congrats on how your channel is GROWING SO QUICKLY - you deserve it !!!! I joined when you were at around 38K subscribers I think.

I love seeing these videos, even when things don't work out. And I enjoy seeing them modeled on someone much closer to what I look like than the 20 year old, size 2, 5'10" models that Old Navy likes to use. Sometimes when I like an item and it fits good I'll get it in multiple colors and it seems the black items are always a tad bit smaller. And that's with things ranging from shirts to pants to bras even! I've always wondered why that was and if it was just me experiencing that. I really love how the jeans look, it's like they were made for you. It's too bad some of the items didn't work because they looked good on you but when they don't fit properly, why keep them. The items look fine to me but you can give us your feedback as to how they really fit and I appreciate that.

I like the red! I recently bought a few things at Old Navy, The pants were very affordable. You definitely need to try on the clothes for fit.

I feel your pain Cathy... I used to try to really like Old Navy and Amazon clothes but they just never fit me. I'm 4'11 so I have to have it in petite. I really liked the red top on you and the coat but you are so right consistency is not there with those stores. I appreciate when you mention adding clothes into your wardrobe that are investment pieces. They fit correctly and make you feel good. I heard someone say "Buy once and buy well" Cheaper isn't always better and at 50 I'm wanting the investment over a cheaper price point.

To me this old navy outfit looks so cute on you. I like it better than your spanx other then the length. Maybe it is the color or the looser fit. I also love the red on you. The jeans look great too. Side note you should buy all shirts V neck it looks so good on you.

The apple shape often has sloping shoulders. Sometimes shoulder pads can be helpful.
I find petite sizes run small. Im 5'0" and wear a 1x in regular sizes but I have to get a 2x if I buy petite. Luckily i sew and can alter regular sizes. It must be so frustrating for others who don't sew. This was a great video. Thanks for sharing. ❤

My shoulders are the shape of a Christmas tree so I have a difficult time finding a good fitting blazer and actually coat too. I feel your pain. I did not like that Moto jacket on you either. I thought the belt/band at the bottom made your stomach look much bigger than what it really is and as an apple shaped woman myself I know we don't need that!
Cathy, I’m a size 10-12 and sizing is inconsistent in those sizes as well. I too have never found a flattering blazer. I have liked a knit blazer by Ralph Lauren but I guess that’s really more a sweater but check it out. I stopped getting things online because it’s too inconsistent and I don’t want my returns in a landfill or a third world country. I really enjoy your videos. Thank you
I like the look of the plaid blazer - maybe you can find something like that at Talbots. As for the rest, the red tee shirt and the pink shirt are nice, but that's about it. I find Old Navy so inconsistent in sizing - but at least they offer petites!

I also have rounded shoulders & arms and being very short, I try to avoid anything “drop shoulder” (and cap or puff sleeves), as I find they always hit right at the widest part of my upper arms😒 But a great way to get a “sharper”shoulder (without broadening/widening!!🤩) is to use small shoulder pads. They attach in different ways to most bra straps and they work really well with most blouses, shirts, t shirts, jackets & even coats if the material isn’t to heavy/stiff!

I was thinking shoulder pads would be great on Kathy, but I was hesitant to say so. I am short 5.1 and a 2X my problem is pants are to wide in the hip if they fit my waist,I have all this extra fabric on the sides,so annoying.
As far as the the shoulder/sleeve not being in the wrong place, it's intended to have a drop seem so it is actually perfect on you.The collar is intended to be a stand up color to frame your face.. I think if you go back to the camel coat you might see that it actually fits you beautifully I think with a colorful silky scarf around your neck it will be amazing.

I feel your position on blazers. I can't wear them either for the same reasons. I've made a permanent decision to wear sweaters. When I can find one styled like a Blazer it's a bonus.
Try Chicos for blazers, they have black, brown and denim that are very cute. I believe they come in petites too. But yes, they sure aren’t Old Navy prices.

Kathy, Torrid had some blazers that had a little stretch that were really nice. I am also an apple body girl and I did find them there when I was plus sized. I do like Old Navy for casual clothes. I actually got the white shirt(eyelet sleeves and around the bottom) you got but I got it in black and I love it! Good luck on finding that blazer, don't despair I am sure you will find one that looks awesome on you!

I always size up with black jeans and dark grey jeans for any brand. They fit smaller because of the dyeing process. I recently had that problem with dark "smoke grey" Levi's

I have the same issues. Pants are often too long, black pants usually too tight. Blazers just don’t look good on me, they aren’t proportioned correctly. I love the flannel shirt! I had originally bought the white runners.....but they caused a blister on my heel :( .....You look stunning in red! The biker jacket is cool also....too bad it was snug around the chest. Blazers are very hard for me too--sleeves are always too long and it makes me look boxy. That pink flannel is so cute! Especially with the sleeves rolled up.

Bewteen your video and a coworker wearing cute Spanx pants, I made a big order. At least I had a 10% code. I am in one of those years where I have had to rdo a full refresh to replace and update a lot of my wardrobe. OLd Navy sizing is all over the place. I have gotten the same item in different colors and had them all fit differently. I also see people mentioning this issue in thereviews.

Hi Cathy, I enjoyed your try on! I’m going to try the flannel shirt and the mules. SPANX has a blazer that looks awesome and has high reviews but it’s pricey. Just curious if you had tried it? I would go for it but I’m on my own weight loss journey and hopefully would be too big..eventually lol

I bought so many of their flannel shirts and love them! They do shrink a little bit even though you wash them in cold water. Be aware… I’m 5’7 and I had to return many jeans. They are very too long! Their skinny jeans fit very well but skinny is out of style so I’m really sad! 😆 I ended up buying two pair of Levi’s mid-rise straight jeans for 32,7$ at Walmart and they fit amazingly. I had to size up a size (18) though just so you know if you want to check that out.

It's so nice that you model for us, I used to think I'd like wearing a blazer even though I seldom need to dress up but they just never seemed to suit my body so I stopped trying. You're definitely right about Amazon & different fits from different brands, I've gotten clothing from Amazon but also dislike the idea of needing to return & the item possibly being discarded.
The red top looks great on you with the jeans. Sizing can be so unpredictable here in the U.K. too. I think black is just fine. I would look washed out if I didn’t wear make up when wearing black. As you suggested, a colourful scarf with black looks so classy. Love L🌺🌺

I think you look great in red! The leather jacket had that belt that hit you in the wrong place as well ..IMO ... keep looking you will find one that works! For the blazer, I highly recommend going to the thrift store and looking in the men's section ....find one you like and pay to have it tailored!

That blazer is not too tight! When you are not used to wearing them, they take some getting used to. It’s because it has no stretch. Try looking for a knit blazer in a little shorter length that doesn’t overwhelm you. I’d go for navy, charcoal, or a soft black. One with a contrasting piping would be attractive. I’m short too, but I have broad shoulders and a larger bust. Some blazers/jackets make me look like a linebacker so I’m very aware of the struggle. Sticking with softer fabrics helps.
