I am a Christian and I had a slight problem with a dress I had. Cotton, long, with long sleeves, but slightly see through. A friend suggested an orthodox Jewish clothing store for a slip, and they were completely wonderful to me. I had the dress with me, and they found the perfect cotton slip. Thank you to the community for helping me.

@Annacolleen Etters If you sew, a slip would be a very easy garment to make. I used to wear dresses all the time (I’m not religious but I do enjoy dressing more modestly) and started sewing because I wasn’t happy with everything being polyester and staticky. Nothing bothered me more than my skirts sticking to my legs.

I am a Christian woman also. 64 years old, I would LOVE to shop there. The designs are beautiful, and I would feel appropriately dressed for my age. Sometimes, I am shocked to see what some women, teenagers, wear in church. My mother would never allow us in church with some of the clothes teenagers wear at services.

I am also a Christian (Catholic convert) but have always dressed what you call modestly. Due to health conditions it protects me. I live in a mixed neighbourhood of Christians, Sikhs, Hindus, Rastas and Muslims and we all dress modestly. As you say we are all strong women who feel safe in our own skins. We are not oppressed. Anybody else wearing the same clothes would be called fashionable.

    • @CyclingM1867
      @CyclingM1867 Рік тому +9

@@GoogleGoogle-fy3cj I agree. I'm also a Christian who was raised to dress modestly, whether it's in dresses and skirts (both of which I love) or pants, which I do wear sometimes. It's so hard in some stores these days to find clothes that cover well without looking frumpy, which is very different from being Frum. I hope I said this right. :)
I also agree with you that far too many women these days - younger and middle aged and even older - show off far too much, whether it's how their garments are cut or are too tight. Very little is left to the imagination, and it can make those around them uncomfortable, something that a person of modest spirit would avoid doing.

@@valor101arise not always. Also, if people are going to be checking a woman out from behind, or even in front, they'll do it no matter what she's wearing. I've worn long, loose skirts before that went up past my belly button, topped by a long top that wasn't at all skimpy, covered my arms and everything else, and I still got checked out. So people checking others out happens no matter what a woman's wearing. What a woman's wearing has absolutely nothing to do with that.
I usually wear skirts, at least knee length or longer, but sometimes skirts just aren't appropriate because of what I'm doing. Then I wear pants, usually leggings. I always wear a long top over them, though, one that goes down to my thighs. I'm not saying that pants are for every woman - not by any means - but I do think that women have the right to wear pants if they want, and they can be quite tasteful and modest. Sometimes skirts just aren't appropriate or comfortable for certain things. I tried wearing skirts for exercising, and, aside from walking or cycling, if I was on my comfort bike, skirts aren't great for certain things.
But this is just my opinion, and if skirts and dresses suit you and you can make them work for you all the time, that truly is a good thing. For me, they're what I usually wear, but sometimes pants just suit a situation. :)

This reminds me of a former classmate of mine at university. We had two classes together over two semesters. During the first class she wore simple black abayas every day, so when she dressed in skirts or loose slacks and colorful tops for the second class I was a little surprised. When I complimented her and said I hadn't seen her in those outfits before, she looked confused for a minute and then laughed. She had been pregnant during the first semester, and turns out she wore abayas because she already had them, they still fit, and she didn't want to shop for maternity clothes! 😂 I can definitely see the appeal!

I love feeling protected! People are sometimes confused by my wardrobe and my perspective on modesty because a) I'm not religious, and b) I'm an outspoken old-school feminist. We live in a world that expects us -- especially women -- to expose everything about our bodies and our lives, and I prefer to have control over how much people see of me, literally and figuratively. Thank you for this peek into your world, Sara Malka. Always love to hear what you have to say!

I agree with you women are, as you say, expected to expose flesh and their shape to the world. Why? I have never felt comfortable with this , I too am an old school feminist and have found the way women's lives are commented on by the media is irritating. I am just turned 60 and suddenly I am supposed to ( never wear, do or be) now that I am officially an old person. This is more of the same!!! Women should wear whatever they feel comfortable with . I have no religion but feel that modest clothing is, for me how I want to be my true self.

@@lynnmalpas8124 But you are not old at 60! You are middle aged! If people tell you that you are old then they are as crazy as the people that tell me that I'm old - because here in the UK, once you are 40 you are "old"! Yup, you'll get told to "claim your pension" (which, ironically, cannot be done until age 69 for state pension), you get told you are "old" now, you get told to "forget about finding a husband [if you are unmarried or widowed] and get a pet instead or concentrate on the grandchildren" (grandchildren at 40??? Is this even possible???), doctors will fob every health concern off as "just old age", and another strange one - I constantly get told by doctors that I "must have gout and arthritis", two conditions I have never suffered from and most likely never will given I am slim and vegetarian.
Very strange, this new system - suddenly one is now a child until 29, from 30 on middle aged and from 40 on old. Blimey - when is one a young adult then...?

@@LittleKitty22 oh I do agree with you, women are either maiden, mother or crone. In our society the crone is always depicted as woman who has ragged clothing and messy hair and is not really useful anymore. I am proud to be in my crone years as my mother died young and never got to be the grand old lady she, I am sure, would have been. I wear clothes that suit my shape and have grey hair cut in a style that looks good I like to think. I'll admit, I cannot dress particularly modestly because I have a chronic illness that makes it difficult for me to regulate my body temperature, but I loved hearing your explanation of the reason for Orthodox modesty and the way observing it makes you feel. I have an outfit that makes me feel protected like that because it holds a special memory for me. My paternal grandmother (who basically raised me after my mom passed) loved fashion and made many clothes for herself and others throughout her life, but I was never very stylish because I was shy with shaky self-esteem. When I was just coming into myself as an adult, I found a sundress with a soft pink and coral floral pattern I loved and a loose knit sweater that matched the petals almost exactly online, but I was really concerned it wouldn't actually look good on me and I'd be made fun of. I decided to take the plunge despite my fears and when they showed up I styled them with leggings and some ankle boots. My grandma was the first person to see me in this outfit. I walked into the kitchen, not even trying to show it off - I think I had gone to get a glass of water - and then she gasped and immediately caught my hand and attention. She asked me if my clothes were the package she'd seen on the porch and when I said yes, she exclaimed how perfectly she thought it suited me, how nice the colors looked on me and how flattering the silhouette was, and told me I should wear more things like this. I had heard her rave about outfits my other cousins have worn through the years, but she had never complimented an outfit I'd put together before. It made me love that outfit and gave me bravery to try out more things. Now, when I miss her dearly or want that little boost to my confidence on a gloomy day, I wear this outfit and it feels like she's given my hand an encouraging squeeze.

      What a sweet story!
I have similar concerns. On an average day, I dress modestly (though perhaps not by Sephardic standards, as my previous religion allows pants). However, I wear a tank top underneath my tops as I need access to my arms, and I'd rather not be standing in my bra by a public sink. There have been days where, despite the visibility of my medical devices or scars, I'll take off my top and continue my errands in my tank top, because I'll get sick from being hot if I didn't. I do feel self-conscious when I do, though.

A couple of my medications and illnesses make me sensitive to heat as well, but I also prefer to dress modestly! Living in canada it's easy for about 6 or 7 months, but in summer it gets dangerously hot, especially in the city (I suspect I live near where Frum it Up lives, too!) I think it's very relative, because even on the hottest days I see many Hasidic/orthodox Jewish people walking around in their typical modest clothes and headcoverings with barely a sweat. My Muslim friend also wears modest clothes and headcoverings and lives her best life in the summer. I think most healthy people can adapt to the climate where they live, it's unfortunately just us outliers who can't learn to deal with the heat!

(i feel like myself, so i feel able to best be myself and protect my peace) and then usually as soon as september hits, i begin dressing in my modest (always below knee, never skin tight) winter skirts and sweaters. i have a balance in my life to allow the best parts of me to shine through. i love when people dress in ways that make them feel comfortable and happy, it makes me smile to know that someone is wearing clothes that they love to wear. again, just my own personal life and opinions but i thought it could help for me to share my experience as a younger person.

Also Sara, I just love your sweet spirit. ❤️ It is so wonderful knowing you even if just through this means. I appreciate your time and talents and all you share with each of us about your life, your heart, and your faith. It is a light to us all! ❤️

I love feeling protected. Dressing frum/tzinuit I feel most comfortable, most like myself, and proper. I enjoyed the tour of the store. Where I live, we do not have a Jewish/kosher store. I have to travel out of state for what I need. I was in NY recently making purchases for warmer weather.

I am Christian, but I so admire your devotion to God, without the desire,as so many people have,to please other people over our Lord and King. Your modesty is an outward sign of the depth of love and respect you have for God. I think it is beautiful. Shalom.

As a Pentecostal, the definition of modesty you provided is much better than any definition given to me.
I grew up Catholic, and so I definitely grew up with a strict sense of modesty. While I have relaxed a bit, I will cover as needed to maintain modesty.
The explanation you gave encompassed so much then just wearing clothes. Thank you.

I,too, grew up in a Pentecostal home, but with a Jewish background (long story). My friends tell je I'm attractive and should ",show more",i.e. cleavage! I said,"No,I do t need to. Being modest is freedom!" I have hard time finding modest blouses for larger woman. Thank you!

I am not a practicing Jew but I come from a strongly Jewish heritage and I think that commitment to modesty is beautiful. It's like placing treasure in a guarded treasure chest. Well done.
