I hope you guys enjoy today's video! Let me know if you want to see more astrophotography videos, this was really fun to shoot. And thank you to Sony Australia for lending me this GM 14mm f1.8 - all opinions are my own. I was using the 14mm on the Sony A7III for photo and A7sIII for video.

Quick tip for Astrophotography on Sony camera you can assign the function "Bright Monitoring" to a custom button. It just boost your exposure at your screen so you can see much more at night.
Ooh thanks, I'll do this next time! I don't do astrophotography enough, but now that it's getting darker earlier in Australia I want to go out and shoot a bit more :)
Y’all made me smile taking those lovebirds shots. ❤️
I just purchased this lens to use with my Sony FX6. I’m excited to get it. It gets delivered in 2 more days. I kinda wish I had a photography camera now.
I come here for the photography but I'm also blown away by the video quality as well. Amazing team.
And her Frodos!
And her voice tones and timbres
@@JohnNugroho An Australian with Italian origins. Exotic!
Agree!
Ahh thank you so much, I really appreciate it!
The 1s at 6400 night portraits - that's impressive performance, and they look great, fun idea. I don't think I've seen anyone do that! Some clients will likely want that now.
Thank you!! I do those night portraits for my wedding clients and it’s always a big hit 😄
this is a great, practical/pragmatic (and fun!) review - much better than so many fluff reviews out there - thank you!
Hey Julia ... thank you for the video, it was super fun .. that lens seems amazing ... gets good shot wide open
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it!
Amazing and most fun video I’ve seen for the Sony 14mm. I’m debating between the 14mm & 20mm...🤔👍📸
I just Subscribed❤️
Same! Which one did you go with?
@@Kaisolostudio 20mm. 👍
Milky Way Photography is my very new Genre/Hobby and I use the Nikon S 20mm f1.8 on the Z7 >> gosh HUGE learning curve for me to learn all this Post Processing and Stacking etc etc LOL Quite daunting for this 70 yr old brain >> but my RAW unprocessed images from my first trip to a dark location in S Africa last week are Stunning. I used F1.8 , ISO 4500 and 20 secs
I'm feeling the itch to shoot more astrophotography, so I think I will be working on my skills over the winter and seeing how to improve :D Maybe I can make some videos about it too! There's something really relaxing and fun about it, I really enjoyed shooting these photos.
Loved this! The widest I've ever gone is 24mm so seeing what 14mm looks like was so fascinating! On a side note; definitely hope you and Kristina are able to do an updated 35mm video!
Thank you and yeah I'm the same, 14 was definitely fun/interesting to shoot with as I am not used to it. I'd love to shoot with Kristina again!! But need to wait for her to come back to Australia
great video. With the 14mm, you could likely get up to ~30 second exposure if needed and bring that ISO way down, at least from a star trail perspective.
I love the night photos
Thank you!
I come to your channel for all your amazing reviews but the two of you were super cute in this!
Great work!
Haha thanks so much!!
Blown away that you guys are only lit up by moon light.. low key showing off the A7siii 🙌🏽🙌🏽😂
I loved this! You two are so cute taking pictures together! It made me smile! 😁
The astrophotography was so cool to see! This lens is amazing!! I need to plan how many days I need to make the big switch from canon to Sony! Cause I love this lens! ♥️
Ahh thank you so much!!
REALLY ROMANTIC REVIEW 🥰 👏👏👏
between the a7siii and the a7iii, which one is better in both video and photo? i really want either one of the cameras and like to take both photos and videos, i’m experienced with cameras but when it comes to the details of a camera i’m not that good :/ i loved how the a7siii looked in video while the a7iii looked phenomenal as well in the photos, i can’t decide!
They're both good at both, the main issue with the A7sIII and photo is that the images are only 12MP, so if you need to print or you usually crop photos, it might not be high res enough. I think if video is more important for you, you should go for the A7Siii or if photo is more important then the A7III :)
@@juliatrotti thank you! this was super helpful
I like it when Julia and Dan do the atypical episodes. 👍 Challenges with gear and environments can yield fun content.
18mm is my personal limit before things just start looking weird to my eyes. But for those like it wider it looks like Sony has another winner, despite the oddly shaped and tiny bits of flare. I hope Sony continues to upgrade their standard focal lengths and fill the niche focal lengths as well. Hoping the 100mm f1.4 rumor is true.
Yeah , that would be freakin awesome 👍👍👍
Thank you so much! I love making these videos too, it's a little more challenging for me to not have a subject but I really like experimenting and trying out new things :) And omg yesss I would love that 100mm f1.4!!
Hey Julia, great video, it’s the first one I’ve seen of yours so promptly subscribed and I’m about to go and check out more! Just wondering, was that an atamos ninja v connected to the bottom of your camera for screen recording?
May I ask what do you use for recording camera screen while you testing the lens 😅🙏🏻
Such lovely energy between the two of you!
Hey..
Could you please tell the name of the App that you used in the video to locate the milky way?
Beautiful selfie 💓
So good! I was waiting for you to review this lens. The photos at the end were super cute :)
Thank you so much!
“Was that English?” Haha I think this is somehow my favorite video of yours in a long time. And I don’t even love wide lenses.
Hahah thank you! Just going out to do photography for the sake of photography :)
Such beautiful colors.
heyyy great review, really loved it as it showed many different types of use with this lens. I was considering going for Sonys 12-24 mm 2,8 lens, because I thought that I'd then get the 12,14,18, 20 and 24mm in one high quality pack. Do you think you'd recommend this solution? Or would you recommend just getting this 14mm? I'm new to ultra wide, but I wanna do some creative shooting with it. And video as well. I like the cinematic vibe it gives.
I looooved the astrophotography photos!! Also super impressed that the video caught the stars as well!!
Also curious how you were able to get yourself and the stars in focus at the same time. I struggle with that.
A 14mm f/1.8 wide open and no pincushion distortion. Sony 1224 f/2.8 and 1635 f/4 and f/2.8 also. Sigma 14mm f/1.8 does. Also check PhotoPill Spot Stars to check proper SS for camera with MM lens. You were using the A7iii to capture images of stars 8.08s to 16.16s is good. But earlier you said you were using the A7Siii for video and the clarity of the stars is awesome even with a moon.
Helli, what lens did you use to record this video with stars in the background like 12:00 ? Sigma 18-35?
I was so confused for a second but forgot Australian is opposite weather, new life goal visit the land down under for fall in April
Haha yeah I got heaps of messages on Instagram with people saying the same thing! I on the other hand would love to see cherry blossom season on the other side of the world at this time
Nice work together, guys.
I am searching for a good gimbal lense for the crane 3s and my fx6 but I think this is a little bit too wide Julia’ 🥴 best cinematic greetings from germany
I've been using the G 20mm f1.8 for video which you should check out if you haven't yet! Otherwise there's also that new G 24mm f2.8 Sony just released a couple of months ago which is even smaller, could be a good option for a gimbal as well. I have some video examples of it in my review video :)
@@juliatrotti thanks a lot Julia 🙏 i will check it out
Just wondering why you use f1.8 for the Astro photography? Xx
Yeah they answered your question just as I would have :)
@@LUITESLIFE Thanks so much!!!! Will have to give this a try! Ive only ever done portraits before :)
Wow, I want that lens!!!
Beautiful shots, and the lens does a great job. A question if I may, what do you have attached at the bottom of your camera that's connected to it?
Im not sure but i think its an wireless transmitter so we can see her liveview ?
Fantastic video.
Thank you
How far away has to be the camera to include both lovers fully standing up in the frame? I want wide lens i can't figure out yet how much wide is wide enough. Both lover in elevator scene for example. Extremely tight place and can't go backwards enough.
Hi Julia, Can I ask about your wireless video transmitter?
i just bought this lens sony 14mm. I noticed a sound when you press shutter button i hear mechanical "chik" of closing aperture sound in lense while focusing. Is it normal?
35mm always seemed too tight in most cases for me. Considering a 14mm after your video. The shots seem more interesting and immersive.
Great lens. Got mine yesterday. Only thing is I noticed the inside elements of the lens moves back and forth when you tilt the lens but when I attached it back to the camera and turn it on, it disappears. Is this normal?
Julia did you use the a7iii or the a7siii during the astro shoot out ??
I used the A7iii for the astro photos! We were thinking of doing the self portraits on the A7siii so we could bump up the iso more, but decided to just keep shooting on the A7III :)
I would like to know the lens that you used to shoot early in the clip, what is the lens?
is that a powerbank below the camera??? plz enlighten us...
Hey Julia, what’s the best Lens to shoot dance videos at?
Tried to concentrate but the whole video is just so dreamy and watchable I felt myself being swept along with it. This is Academy Award video stuff here. Thank you for making/sharing it! I'm trying to think... maybe it had something to do about some kinda lens? ⭐x5
Well damn, thank you so much - that's really nice!
6:25 was going to ask is 4k60 fps useful this 50fps also looks good at 50%speed
I was waiting for this video. Thanks 🔥📸
Orion upside down - Wow!
Please do a video over silhouette photography with the Sony a7iii! Not many videos explain as well as you do and show then perspectives you do! Keep up the amazing videos
5:40 Rare photo of your man smiling Julia.. great video ❤️
So sweet, I like it. 😍😍
OMG, Julia is doing astrophotography!
Now that it's getting darker earlier in Australia I want to do some more astrophotography! I'll see what other videos I can come up with :D
I’ve been waiting for this video ❤️
GREAT SHARE! NEW FANS HERE
omg Julia how did you make that last little timelapse? it's spectacular! could you please let us know the settings?
Ooh thank you! You can set the camera to interval shooting, so from memory I think I was using a 4 sec exposure for the photo and getting the camera to shoot one image every 5 seconds. We left it running for maybe 10-15 minutes. I didn't get the perfect timing though as I needed to speed up the footage a bit more in Premiere, but we were getting cold so we didn't have a lot of time to experiment.
Im not a fan of 14mm wide angle lens, but im a fan of Julia! I just gotta like the vid for that.
Haha thank you! Yeah it's a fun lens for sure but not for everyone, like I mentioned in the video 20 is usually the widest I go for video and 24 the widest for photo
You two are soooo cute!!! Great video. 👌✌️
Is this Hand held or you use a Gimbal ??
Hand held! I don't own a gimbal 😅
@@juliatrotti
Then your work is in the list of my inspirations...🙌🏻
Julia nice review. What camera and lens the video is taken with.
Thanks! The video was on the A7sIII with the Sigma 18-35 and the night shots were with the GM 35mm f1.4
@@juliatrotti thank you :)
So good
Haida make really good very affordable internal filters for this lens.I got a set (3,4,6 & 10 stop ND’s) I use these in my 12-24 f2.8 gm lens but it is the same setup for the 14mm gm.😀👍🥰🙏
@@godsinbox sorry no, I haven't got or tried that filter.
Patiently waiting for the 35 mm queen to discuss the new 35 1.4 dgdn 😌
I'm trying to get my hands on one! I will make a video as soon as I do :D
HOW ARE YOU RECORDING YOUR SCREEN!!!!
Was the A7siii on a gimbal or hand held when he was following you?
probably handheld
Yep it was all handheld!
@@juliatrotti mind blown 🤯
Hey,I Am from Bangladesh. your video is so helpfull.. thanx a lot and u looking to creamy ❤️
Love your videos ❤️
Keep it up
Damn was that night footage A7siii at max ISO? I mean sure it looks noisy but all things considered it's really not that bad.
It was at iso 64,000 and I agree it's a little grainy but I don't know another camera that could capture shots like that lol Dan also used the GM 35mm f1.4 for those night video shots as well
I agree on the Damn! Midnight vlogging is now a thing.
Had to check comments to indeed see that it was the mighty a7siii.
Wish I had a spare 5 grand just for pitch dark usage. Butttttt, god such a mind tear.
Thx for the footage nonetheless.
Hi. don't you get the new sigma 35mm to review?
I'm trying to get a copy of it!
Julia posts, we click! Personally won't be grabbing this one but it looks good.
I appreciate you! 🤗
Does anyone know how she has a real-time view when she shooting?
What is she using?
You can record your EVF using atomos ninja. I am not sure which specific model is she using though.
Pretty sure it's the Accsoon CineEye. She talked about it in a video but the video wasn't specifically about it so I'm not sure which one.
@@NickDelDuca thank you.
WOW❤️❤️😍😍😍😍😍
What bag is that?
Lovely footage, especially your ability to stand still for a second! :-)
Thank you and bahaha I tried :)
Not sure leaves and nature are a good test. I would prefer to have seen building, architecture, etc., allowing us to assess distortion.
Hey Julia, you're so gorgeous as always. Btw it's a little bit weird for me to see autumn colors in april, because we're waiting for the summer here in Europe 😁
Amazing video as always, but the thumbnail is insanely beautiful!!
Thank you so much!
like the leaves through the leaves
You should try the 1.4 24mm gm lens its ment to be incredible if just got it but haven't tested it yet lol
I have used it before and I agree its an amazing lens! I just haven't uploaded the video, but maybe I will work on it and upload it soon :)
@@juliatrotti I'm doing my very firs video with the 24mm 1.4 gm lens on Friday but I still learning to edit videos any advice you can give me for editing videos would be amazing please 😅😅
I think you have been shooting portraits with the 35mm for too long wide & ultra-wide portraits are great in alleyways, pathways or with overhead interest like Chinese lanterns. Any time when the leading lines converge it gives a perception of extreme depth please redo this shoot for Portraiture in mind 🐣
The thumbnail photo is nice.
Thank you!! We were making the most of those beautiful colours 😍
LOL too funny. Too cute.. thanks for the tips!
Nature is enough to satisfy everyone not always need of models.
I agree, I had so much fun taking these photos!
Ok now I want this lens ...
I think the picture is better with Sony Cinema 16-35 lens
I've missed your videos and your accent.
I was literally smiling when she was laughing at slow motion.
For Astro photography you need a dark sky, new moon is when you go out, the moon makes the sky too bright.
If I may, you own an A7SIII ... Try using ISO 12800, which is native to that camera!
My choice is camera, and your photography is beautiful
Love ❤ from pakistan 🇵🇰
❤❤❤💓❣👍
Absolutely pointless doing an Astro photography review of the lens on a night with a full moon
👍
Hopefull you know what you are doing. Instagram on a Fame Walk . Way to Cloudy . Does Sound pollution exist?
You are so pretty
She is low key flexing her iPhone 12 😂
Hahaha I just needed something dark for the lens to focus on 😅
