Thank you for another brilliant video, Julia! I was screening all the options for a 35mm for my Sony A7 IV, and this video really helped me to make a final decision. The GM's ability to render natural (and vibrant) skin tones, even with strong backlighting, was the litmus test for me. I love doing portraits at "golden sun time", with the sun behind the model's head, igniting the model's hair.
You can always edit images in lightroom to look any way you want so vibrancy of images or colour in general shouldn’t be what you prioritise. The Sigma is an infinitely better lens overall, image flexibility and image quality is unmatched rn. Altho I can see why people would wanna go with the second best option because it’s lighter
Buy the GM. The size of the sigma is absurd lol specially if you travel, you do not want to lug that thing around. Needless to say, the GM is 100 dollars cheaper and is just as sharp and better built imo. Also, for video, the sigma is kind of weird with the focus ring if you’re into manual focus, the ring has a slight delay and you basically have to full 180 your wrist.
Don’t have the GM but sharing experience about Zeiss and Sigma. By far the winner is Sigma. The Zeiss is just too soft and has a very odd rendering pertaining to greens and saturation. Now if you are a hobbyist and can get the Zeiss for $800-900, that’s a good deal
Are they still making this Len? I heard they postponed the release date indefinitely. I preordered mine but don't have any information when I will have mind
Did you update the firmware of the sigma? Sigma released a firmware update in December fixing focus issues, which is a big plus on sigma as they keep working on already released lenses.
I like the look of the song GM better than the sigma. Great video, julia! I would love if you could do a short video where you show us how to do a simple skin retouch on photoshop. I find it very intimidating 👀

Beautiful light and model. I thought, side by side, that the Sigma shots looked a bit duller and darker than the Sony lens. Was that a setting difference?
Really unique light - on the side by side I think the native lens looked better consistently - although... some of the BEST shots on the Sigma 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
Hi Julia let me tell you that this video is not a fair review I'm sorry, you use 2 different sensors and the pictures, as evident, have different focus points each shot and techincally speaking you cannot compare these two lenses here. Also, sometimes the sigma is darker and sometimes is brighter. One lens is f1.2 the other f1.4, if math related to optics is not an opinion then we should see slight differences in order to prove how these lenses perform in different scenerio. I made a research about both lenses ad unfortunately I got into your video which is way far from appropriate concept of technical comparison. You should have mentioned it. You should adjust the title which is entirely out of place. You may love Sony and it all depends about marketing and agreements on youtube which is the first referenced platform for people. Consider my intervention in your favour since gaining fans is not a problem for you.
HI Julia! Do you ever get “PDAF Striping” when you are shooting backlit photos with the a7iii? I have been experiencing the issue but some forums say that it depends on what lens you are using. It happens to me with my 50mm f1.8.

your video helped me a lot! bought the sigma first and the autofokus on a7III missed pretty often (even on 1.4)! the bokeh was beautiful but this lens ist really front heavy. Testing the Gmaster was such a relief on my arm and the autofokus worked much much better (and its a bit sharper). In the end: a lens has to be fun and has to do its job. i dont want to check every image if it is in focus. I will still miss the bokeh though :/
Those eyes are in focus. Canon files vs Sony files, which one do you find easier to edit? 😂 Sony’s 35GM all day for me and can’t wait to get my hands on it. After the 24mm 1.4 GM, it will be my favourite.
For the rain shots I would have told the model to stop moving around and slowed the shutter speed way down to get bigger streaks for the rain. Probably have to take the ISO down to 50 and maybe stop the lens down a bit for proper exposure.
What a beautiful lighting indeed, wow. I loved the rainy shots! I do have to say, though both lenses had great images, my eye tended to look to the GM over the Sigma. I feel that the GM has a slightly more dreamier look to it and love how it melts away the edges of the focus area.
I'm not surprised you say that since she failed to properly expose both pictures to an identical look in order for us the audience to A/B it properly.) I'm blown away by how badly she failed to deliver a proper comparison and turned this whole video into a "raw vs edited" shootout rather than one lens against another. Totally unprofessional and soaked in ignorance test.

I hope Sigma will make 1.4 dg dn art version just like they did with the 85mm. In this comparison i would definitely pick sony because of the size and weight.
Great shoot! I guess you can’t go wrong with either of those two great lenses. As I have neither I’d opt for the Sony as it’s much smaller and a bit lighter as well as probably quicker af thanks to it being native. But if I already had the sigma I’d be more than happy.
Thanks and I agree, both are great but the Sony has the small and light weight factor which I really like since I shoot sometimes for 12 hours in a day with weddings!

After shooting both and i decided to keep my Sigma 35 1.2, to my eyes the Bokeh is better on the Sigma. i for one don't really see that GM offer any better optic quality at all, especially on the Bokeh the Sigma looks quite a bit better to my eyes actually, so I am willing to deal with the bigger, heavier and even more expensive ( only $100) lens.
@AllCarsUnited, you must be a huge amateur to not be able to tell that she failed to deliver a proper A/B comparison by not matching the exposure to make both look identical (the sony can't be brighter than the sigma since the sigma is f1.2). The Sigma shots looked like some mediocre raw files and the Sony looked edited and brighter. There's no glass that can give you those variables, it's the in camera settings which she failed to proper match in order to get the same light transmission in the final images and the least she could've done was to match it in post. She's way unprofessional and this ignorant testing approach is quite putting me off. It's almost like she rigged the Sony shots to bias people into thinking that you get more by paying for the Sony glass which is not true.
In Centre canon slightly sharper but on the corner sony a bit sharper if you just think about portrait canon look better, and colors seem to different, on sony: a bit yellow on canon: close to natural.
I like your videos but that's a bad comparision. Maybe it was difficult to do it in these conditions, but you shouldn't call the video that way because it's not a meaningful comparison between the two lenses.
Great shots. Beautiful model. However, I hate "posing trance". There were so many lively, energetic and spontaneous moments that quickly evaporated once the model looked at the camera. I'm sure she's modeled many times before (for obviously gorgeous reasons) where they didn't want the model's personality to take attention away from the clothes, but to me this should have been different.
That sigma background blur is so dreamy, and it swirls! Like a helios.

You're the only reviewer to find the Sigma slower to AF than the Sony. If you were in AF-C, the Sigma should have been almost twice as fast
So different colours. Must be a profile thing in RAW converter.
I had not such a big differences when comparing that lenses...
