Make your own ESSENTIAL OILS at HOME!!

- The herb garden this year has inspired me to do as much with my herbs as I possibly can. Moving towards learning and understanding what it means to be self sufficient, I recognize that a lot of money goes into my essential oils. This is why I have started to research how I can start making my own essential oils at HOME!
This particular process was initially the one that sounded like it suited my expectations of a final product the most. So this is the one that I tried. Of course, I seem to have made it a bit harder than it needed to be. Check out the video to learn more about my DIY Essential Oils experiment.

We learn from our mistakes. You showed us how to avoid some things. Thanks for taking the time to share.❤
Thank you. I appreciate you. It was not perfect but it was what I had available and I wanted to give it a try. We like to share our story. Thats not to say we always do it right.
I applaud you for sharing this process even though it didn't go perfectly and sharing your lessons learned with the community. thanks so much!
Thank you!
What you have right there is a jar full of Hydrosol which is amazing. The method you used is a great at home way to get hydrosol you will get very little oil because it takes pounds of plant material to get a bottle of essential oil. That’s why it is so expensive and you will need a still. You can do the infused oil method just know they are completely different and in no way is it an essential oil. Great video 👍🏻 fun to watch.
Thank you Carly!
Mason jars...the ones used for canning, can handle both heat and freezing. However, if the jar is cold, make sure the liquid is not hot and vice versa. I think if you had just put the jar of liquid in the refrigerator, if there were oil in it, they (oil and water) would separate just as well. However, oil does not generally turn into steam (water that has been turned into a vapor) or condensation (when vapor such as water forms a greater mass). I could be wrong but its what I remember from science classes years ago. It was a great effort though and helps me narrow down my own research and to be content with more of an infused oil process. I'm also thinking of using some alcohol (vodka or everclear) to break down the cell walls for 1st extraction and then using water / oil / glycerin (haven't finished my research yet) for the second extraction.
Wow that’s great! Thank you for the feedback. It sounds like you have put a lot of research into this. We did do another video on making essential oils. The setup is quite a bit more advanced but for this video I wanted to share with people how they can play around with stuff they already have at home.
This is the newer video

I saw you putting the glass jar in the freezer and said, “Noooooooo!!!!!” Live and learn. ❤️
Haha well I appreciate you! Unfortunately, i did it. But not next time haha
Good effort. I’m looking forward to seeing the future attempts.
I have a better feeling about using the larger pot
Thanks! I have some ideas!
The liquid should have been room temperature before putting in the fridge. The hot liquid was too hot , heated the glass up and the cold temperature cracked the glass . It could crack plastic as well. That was a good trial . I will give your method a try . Thanks
Thank you for the feedback Offshoot100
great to try plants in small garden. I'm going to try it gentler, slower, fridge instead of freezer. Fun idea to play with. Thank you
Let us know how it goes for you!
Thank you for your effort, I was told when small never to put glass in the freezer. I was surprised when you were going to put it in the freezer.
We learn from mistakes. Please keep us posted.
I wasn’t brought up doing a DIY lifestyle. A lot of what I do today was self taught. We also like to be honest on our UA-cam channel. We share it how it really is. Sometimes that means sharing the mistakes as well
Maybe if you put it in the refrigerator first for the separation, and then the freezer, that might help get the most oils out of your batch.
Yes! That is a good idea
@@GrantedGardens I agree with Clever Unicorn, cooling the liquid down more slowly would have prevented the jar from breaking. Plus, if you put hot product in a cold jar it can crack it. The solution is to heat the jar before adding your hot product. One way to do this is by putting your jar in room temp water and then heating both the jar and the water at the same time. If you let it boil for 20 mins. or so it will sterilize your jar also. After adding your product, then let the jar sit at room temp, maybe then put in the fridge and from there put in the freezer. Extreme temp changes can break your jar.
I enjoyed your video and gave it a thumbs up!
The real issue is she did one small batch. You may have to do a 50 gallon drum worth of plant material to get 10-50ml of essential oil depending on the plant. Also it depends on the time of year. There’s some good academic books with research in it just about essential oils like 600 pages long or something. I skimmed it. It showed like pinyin juniper or pine essential oil extraction varies throughout the year because of nature and temperature etc. so you also might want to try to extract essential oil at different times to try to see what’s optimal.
But I’ve never seen someone freeze water and essential oil to try to get the oil out. From what I’ve seen if you want to do it in a pot the best setup is a pressure cooker and then the top lid has a hole which you connect a hose to which then goes into your condenser. Just run the hose into a pot of cold water next to it, and then have it come out of the bottom into a glass jar. Just like cut a hole in a 5 gallon bucket for a hole to fit or put a pipe fitting so you can screw it on. That’d be a simple condenser and just put cold water in the bucket. Lots of setups use pumps to circulate water but that’s a lot more added work if you’re small.
Hey! You should also take full advantage of those gorgeous stems! So much oil in there!
Great point!
Thank you for documenting your efforts!
Thank you for watching!
I loved your video. I was wondering if it would be possible to leave the jar open so the water can evaporate. You would probably have to cover the container with a porous cloth, like cheesecloth, to prevent bugs from getting in, but allow water to get out. The oil shouldn't evaporate. Another I idea I had is the you could to simmer the water off without burning the oil. I have never commented before, but your video was inspiring! This is my first comment ever!
Hi! 👋 Thank you for the message! We have upgraded our system quite a bit since this video. We have another video with our updated
System. However, I really believe that you don’t need a ton of fancy tools. Obviously, there is a better way than putting it in a glass jar in the freezer haha But I think it’s still a good run if you are looking to not spend a
Bunch of money on tools.
Let me know what works best for you if you try it!
Glass jars are ok for freezing but there are steps you need to take to make sure it doesn’t break. Great job beauty!!
OH ANOTHER IDEA for ice cube mess conundrum.. u can get one of the blue froze things that people have in their freezers, used in coolers and stuff instead of ice...hey damn sometimes I shock myself lol...using one of those wouldn't melt everywhere also the size would stay cold longer...what ya think?
And tell me what u think about the slow cooker idea too... because that's probably how I am gonna do it my first time
Oil freezes faster then water. U could have just put it in the fridge. The oil would harden and the water would stay melted. If you put oil and water in a cup put it in the freezer both would freeze. The only way you can separate it properly is putting it in the fridge not freezer
Thank you! I will do that next time
LOVED IT! You are... JEEN-YAS!! 💖
Thank you Barb! I tried to do it with simple tools everyone would have. We just posted a new video the other day of our updated tools
ua-cam.com/video/DfrE2Wh0Jw4/v-deo.html
Good attempt. You can use a turkey Baster to the water of the lid. Also keep heat on low, the oils in the leaves will release slower.
Thank you for the advice!! It’s a lot of work so any tips help
actually, you can boil the collected distilled water and be left with just oil or purchase an oil splitting jar that empties from the bottom once its splits
Thanks for sharing! I will give that a try!
Oil will freeze to the bottom
Put the ice in a small metal bowl on top? Use two… one to change out quickly.
that was very helpful, thank u :)
Thank you for joining us!
Was liquid hot when you put it in the freezer? That caused glass to break. You'll get it next time
excellent, worth the effort.thank you.
Thank you Steven!
I wonder if you had just put it in the fridge or on a counter to cool down if it would have separated like water and do naturally.
I would imagine that would do just fine
Also, put the jar in the fridge!! It won’t break the jar and it will solidify the oil, since oil has a lower solidifying temp than water!
Yes! Next time it will go in the fridge. Haha oops. Thank you for your help!
Patchouli is my favorite
I do love it! I hope it comes back this year. If not I will need to find more
Hi sis, good job. Please how do i preserve my fresh leaves oil i made to last long?
Hopefully I can do this I want to make sure my essentials oils are pure
This is a great diy friendly and inexpensive way to make them at home.
If you have any questions about oils I do sell for a reputable essential oil company. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have. You can email me at: ForHomemadeHealth@gmail.com
Maybe puting a frozen Ziploc bag on top of the lid might work.
That an idea!
Would it not begin to melt to the lid heated too much?
we can use some kind os stainless steel bowl or cup instead of plastic or glass.
I've put lots of glass jars in the freezer, and they've only cracked when overfilled with a lid. How warm/hot was your liquid? The temperature difference may have been enough to crack it.
Yes that had to have been the issue. I think I’ll try just putting it in the fridge next time to see if they separate
@@GrantedGardens let cool to room temperature. Don't rush
I think you could put ice in a zip lock bag and put it on the lid. And mason jars can be frozen.
What a GREAT idea!
I don’t believe you need to freeze it. If you had refrigerated it, I think that would have been fine. You can pull the oil off of the top of the water that way too
I agree!
Hey girl I'm just now learning how to do this too....hey maybe try using a crock pot and upside down lid!!! I never tried it but now seeing your problem with boiling, I know not how to.
I really want my own still girl hahaha
The crock pot is a Great IDEA!! My fiancé actually bought me a still for my birthday. We have yet to try it but I will definitely do a video when we do! Thanks for the comment 🤗❤️
I was afraid the moment you put the liquid in glass and put it in the freezer. Glass always cracks in the freezer.
wow nice
Use ice packs rather than ice but good ideas, enjoyed the video.
TY!
Thanks for watching!
It's common that you never put glass with liquid in the freezer 😢
Mistakes because of wrong decisions, will help us make good decisions. See you on your next video. By the way, this is Flordeliza Obispo, I'm using my husband's fb account because i don't have one, hehe.
Thank you, Flordeliza!
is it available for other plants or leaves ?
or only mint leaves ?
You can use this process with any plant
You can’t put a hot liquid in a glass jar and then freeze immediately, otherwise you get what you did, let it cool to room temperature then freeze it.
Yes it was a sad ending but we have changed the way we do things recently and will share a video here once we have enough herbs to process 🤗
I just wanted to let you know that this isn't patchouli essential oil, it's patchouli water. In order to make patchouli oil, you should be submerging the patchouli in oil and simmering it for about four hours.
Technically, if I took the final process here and ran it through a few more time I would end up with a more pure essence. However, perfection was not my goal here. I was really just tinkering with what I had. There are MANY ways that people can make their own essential oils. I have see the way you mentioned done many times as well! I think they are all fun and it’s worth trying each type to see what works best for you.
Thank you!!
Does anyone know what's the plant name?
Patchouli
How does the hydrosol smell? I made some but with roses and didn't get a scent. Looks great:0)
It worked well in a diffuser! I could smell it for sure
@@GrantedGardens thanks, your video was helpful.
Wondering if this can be done in a crock pot??? 🤔
That’s an idea worth trying out!
Whether used fresh or dried, there's no doubt that herbs can take a dish from good to great with their lively, aromatic flavours. But the question is, do herbs lose their vitamins and minerals when cooked? The short answer is yes.
I have heard yes as well
Thanks . I’m going to try cardamom !
Can a rice cooker with steamer and basket work... As the moisture runs around the rim and collects in the side of the rice cooker... I was wondering...
I have never tried that. If you do try, please let me know how it turns out!
I think you should buy an essential oil distiller... I have seen a video with 10 kilograms of lemon just to extract 80 ml of lemon essential oil. that is how little you can get.
We have one! We ended up doing a video with it a few years later! Check it out!
I would suggest next time just put them in the fridge and not in the freezer
I think I will try that!
Great! Good Job! Antes Progress regarding Separation?
Any progress I meant.
I am considering doing a revamped video on this. I’m still trying to figure out the best way to go about it. I need to do one though. Update coming soon!
@@GrantedGardens thanks! I liked the idea of put in the refrigerator to separate the oil from water.
Thanks for sharing. All The best.
@@GrantedGardens I think about 47-50°F (9° C) it is enough to get essential oil solid, not the water (32°F). I live in Brasil, Sâo Paulo, and coconut 🥥 oil at 10°C is solid, now we are in the summer, above 21°C (70°F), and the coconut 🥥 oil at room temperature is liquid.
So i folowed the steps but it all froze as one thing. No separation at all. Curently have it in the fridge to melt out.
Let me know how it goes!
@@GrantedGardens so after it thawed out nothing separated from the steam water but it does smell like basil. Dont know what I can do with it. Not sure if i just didnt have enough basil leaves or if I didn't cook it for enough time. Any ideas on what I could do with basil steam water?
@@GrantedGardens forgot to mention that after it thawed I froze it again looking for that oil separation but nope
@@shadesmadness4399 do you have any diffusers? You can put it directly in a diffuser it’s essentially the same thing as adding oil to water.
@@shadesmadness4399 it sounds like you needed more basil
Super handy
For my candle business -t-h-a-n-k-y-o-u-
Byt did u wash the leaves
Thank you for watching!
you could have put the ice in a ziplock bag.
Great idea!
You used wrong type of jar. A canning jar would of been your best bet.
Agreed! I think the one I used was from the dollar store 😣 no good!
The steam you're catching is just water.
Technically there should be another step to separate the water/oil I am catching. But for simple diy friendly (and cheap) option this works. What I am collecting has a potent aroma and would work well in a diffuser
There is some oil, or there ought to be. It's a small amount in comparison to the water, but it's there.
You look exactly like somebody I used to know who has a Korean mother and a Native American-German father. Are you the same mix? thank you for your video by the way my cheap ass husband won't let me buy cilantro oil to help our autistic child detox the heavy metals from his hepatitis B vaccine so I'll have to learn how to make this myself and at times you sound like Kim Kardashian. I know I'm completely random but everything is connected anyway I must need detox as well. Lol!
Hello Samantha! Thank you for watching! This really is the most basic way to make your own and I tried to use materials that everyone would have in their kitchen. It’s worth a try! We will be doing another video this year with a different set up. I do have both Native American and German blood but no Korean to my knowledge. I will keep your son in my thoughts an prayers. If you do give this a try, please keep me posted and let me know how it goes!
@@GrantedGardens thank you so much hun you will be surprised to know that all native American ancestry includes asian. So a lot of Genghis Khan ancestors or descendants intermarried the proof is in the shovel shape incisors and the MTHFR gene which makes us more sensitive to heavy metals found in vaccines. Are you in Kentucky or are you in Florida. if you are in Kentucky watch Mike morales's channel he says a lot of rain is coming your way or something like that. Thank you again for keeping my son and your prayers. You have a beautiful channel.
Thank you! I live in Maryland.
only mint leaves availble ?
You can do this with any herb
which leaf used for esstional il?
You can use this process with any plant
Mason jars won’t crack
You should had waited for your leaves to dry
You can do it both ways. if you use fresh leaves, you will just need to use more leaves.
AaGood Idia 😂
Nice try thank you anyways
Thank you, Rogelio!
That was a complete waste of my time congratulations! You you didnt do what your video title said you'd do ,
I dont think you are very smartttt
