So many comments from our Italian friends! and so many "first car" stories!. My first car was also a (green) 850 Sport Coupe, that I bought in Lygon Street in about 1981 (from a falafel shop). I later put in a 12A rotary, driving through a VW Superbug transaxle and VW/Mini Minor CV joint axles. Radiator up the front. A fuel tank under each seat. Sold it to a 'kid' in Melbourne (Australia) in 1986 or 87. Saw it 3 months later on his nature strip with minor crash damage. Never heard of again.
Back in college, I commuted 50 miles every day fall winter spring in a ‘71 850 Spyder. Only mech trouble was a cable (cant remember if throttle or trans) that snapped in extreme upper midwest cold. Reliable otherwise. But looking back, it was a TINY TINY car! Getting into it was like sliding into a slipper.
I had an 850! I loved it. It was like driving a go kart. Mine wasn't nearly so pretty though and was not an Abarth, but the guy I bought it from put the radiator up and added a 2 barrel Weber racing carb on it. I could never get the damn thing to stop overheating so I'm eventually sold it. Such a cute little car and a blast to drive! Thanks for sharing! I wish I had another.
Cars years ago were light weight and all the safety and environment regulations changed the shape, dimensions and weight of car. And here is the thing roads are no safer today than they were 50 years ago. The same applies to smoking (not a fan of) in that less people smoke today than 50 years ago yet lung cancer rates are higher today.
@@bighands69 i agree with you, except that lung cancer rates today are connected to the habits of decades ago. The damage done in our 20s and 30s is causing cancers now
Hello Tony, the car has been beautiful and the project is impressive with a lot of work, I have a red Seat 850 Sport Coupe with an original 903 engine. What rims and tires do you mount? I currently have mounted a 13/7 rim and 185/60/13 tires, and I would like to lower the profile of the tire to 55/50 and also lower the width to 175, depending on the most commercial measures. Can you give me some advice about it. Thanks and enjoy the car.
Hi Jose, Thank you for your comments. The wheels I have are ‘performance super lite’ and the tyres I use are a Dunlop 205/65/R13.The wheel arches are also modified to suit the wider tyres. I prefer the larger profile which I think suits the cars period. 👍
Hi, Tony, very nice project. One question, please: The red colour, is original for FIAT or Abarth? Do you remember his code, please? It is a red colour very nice for FIAT 850 coupé, sport coupé and FIAT 124 sport coupé 1600. Regards from Spain
Thank you for your comment. Yes, the motor is a 1049 cc A112 A2 with a high lift camshaft, modified cylinder head , Weber 40 dcoe carburettor and a TCR Group 2 style exhaust system.
Hi Tony, I got a 850 coupe 1972 , to dismantle the fuel tank do I had to take down the gearbox? Plus the starter is in an awkward place I had to take off the water pump ,radiator etc etc just a nightmare to work on it.if you can give me some tips. Thank you.
Hi, some of these jobs are tricky for sure. My car was completely stripped and everything rebuilt before installation, which hopefully means I won’t need to remove the fuel tank again !. Access to the starter on my car is not too bad, because of the radiator being at the front of the car and for me, taking the time and being patient with the job at hand helps. 👍
@@kzz8971 The electric fan is now situated at the front of the car on the radiator and actuated by a temperature switch, it easily keeps the temperature in control.
