    Prices are out of control for used gear

    Only an extra $100 to buy brand new .

      I noticed that too. Even old ass line 6 gear is damn near the same price it was new.

    selling anything used is a question of luck and timing. In the end, the buyer needs to see your add, and want it enough to be willing to buy it. Selling it at a reasonable price is also quite hard to achieve as well. Everyone expects a great deal

    I'm seeing guitars that have been listed for 8 months, to over a year. I was going to sell a few, but I think I'll hold off. I don't want to give them away.

      It's more likely prices are going to continue downward for used gear. When you add in the effect had you sold it now, even for a bit less than you want, then put the money in an interst bearing account or buy stock or whatever, It would be growing. But all you are doing with your strategy is watching it devalue more day by day and missing out on what it could earn.

      The market ain’t ever coming back, only grey beards at this point are into guitars and they all want to sell now because we’re all old, but no new generational buyers behind us to sell them to. Game over.

    What you’re explaining is Economics 101. I’m on the border between being a Boomer and Gen X, age-wise; I have seen these cycles come and go with music gear, as well as other types of consumer goods, numerous times. There’s nothing wrong with making a seller on Reverb an offer on something one is interested in. Who cares if they think you’re trying to low ball them. Market economics are a reality and there are sellers that’ll realize that a reasonable offer is the current reality and thusly a sale is made.
    It’s the same with something like the Digi-Tech Bad Monkey OD pedal. Josh Scott from JHS Fx made a video singing the praises of this once budget and now discontinued pedal and the prices went through the roof for this only available as used pedal. I saw sellers asking stupid prices as high as $1,000 for what sold new for $50 a dozen years ago. There are still some asking more than $400 and yet the next listing in the stack may be $150. I’d never pay more than $90 (including shipping) for one.
    Just like those who’d pay an outrageous price for a Bad Monkey, there are sellers who’ll take an offer that’s 20% less than what they’ve listed as an asking price because they’ve come to realize that it’s indeed a buyer’s market and if they want some cash for a used guitar, amp or pedal, they need to accept current market realities. All a prospective buyer has to do is make a marketplace reasonable offer.

    • @StratocasterHemi
      @StratocasterHemi 6 днів тому

      I’m your age and agree but there is one more HUGE difference this time around. No new generations of players this time to buy them all. Financial cycles do happen and I’ve seen them as well but this time we have millions of grey beards ready to sell collections of 10+ guitars and no new generations who want them. Guitar was primarily a boomer and genx thing since they became popular in the 1960s and it will die with those two groups which is right around the corner, It is what it is.

    Your assessment is consistent with some used guitar sellers opinions on things. I’m looking for a bass (US-made Fender Jazz with single coil pick ups, a brand that holds value, Isuspect I can find a seller who is not a working musician and wants to unload both bass and a lightweight bass amp, that I could find a good deal.)

  • @rodbelding9523

    Yeah the used guitar market is trash right now. For the past few months on my local marketplace sellers keep listing the same guitars over and over and over again because no one is buying them, and even though no one is buying them the sellers still won't lower their asking prices.

    • @Podcastforthewin
      @Podcastforthewin 8 місяців тому

      Problem is, here in Canada, they jacked the prices up way to high for almost every brand. I have a Dave Mustain signature Gibson flying V silver, I've listed for two weeks or more now, and I have had zero fucking offers. I'm asking $3100! That was $3700 new here and it's not going down in vallue, I'm just trying to sell or trade it because I cant stand flying V's.
      It's so weird how a guitar that will be worth 5k, in a year or two, won't even sell for 3k on Kijiji or marketplace.

    From buying used gear for 30 or so years, my observation is that the used value usually sits at about 60% of list. It can go up because of rarity or desirability and it can go down because of condition. I'm also just talking about selling to a customer. With a shop, you're lucky to get 40% I feel for the people who have their sales parked at 70% or higher but it would be unusual for the second owner to eat some of that sticker price.

    One of the biggest reasons why it's hard,
    Several of the major guitar dealers are financing them $50.00
    $75.00 monthly payments for a new guitar' no credit check vs all the money up front.

    • @KnuckleheadStuey
      @KnuckleheadStuey 6 місяців тому

      Some are for 2-4 years. I take advantage of those. Payments have been as little as $20 for 4 years. Pay it off in a year or less and it also boosts my credit rating. Plus that's zero interest if paid within the time frame

    The idea of selling used guitar for price higher than new is so absurd, and as i found now, not only to me, but also lots of people who won't buy used crap for 20$ less than new. And i've got my niche, and my favorite brand of guitars, so here how it is, i've bought in 2015 new guitar for X amount, and last week i found on facebook near me, same model as mine (from 2014) for 1.2X i paid back then. And if you say well inflantion, it's been 8/9 years, i'll answer with a word "greed", becouse i bought another of this kind year ago (2022 august) for 0.9X price, and there were many others in this price range, i just went for the candy color lol. I think that the comparison to house market is good, but genrally it's an awful thing, hoarding shit and making money simply reselling it.

I see used on reverb when adding shipping it's actually more than new. Why on earth would I pay a higher price for dented, dinged and who knows what else.

    I think there are many reasons including Covid oversupply, inflation and cost of living, people aren’t spending but also what is being made now by guitar companies, Gibson and Fender come to mind are largely poor quality with substandard timbers compared to what was being made pre 2018. People are realising the older guitars are just better. I bought and sold two American Fender Pro strats before buying older 2000 models second hand. Quality is vastly superior in build and woods. People are realising what they have.

    Why? Simple: People keep posting used gear for close to "New" prices.
    The post pandemic market is fully saturated with used guitars that first timers bought with their government incentive money.
    Want to sell your stuff? Offer it for USED prices. It's not our fault that you barely played your guitar.
    Sheesh. I've seen used "made in Mexico" strats posted for more than the new ones are going for at guitar center. Seriously, people. Understand that you will NOT get your money back for makes and brands that are too common and available everywhere.
    Take the hit and move your stuff, or stay unrealistic and stay stuck with it.

      I saw a crate 15 watt practice amp for $200. 5 years ago they were going for about $25. Now they're about $50. They wanted $200. Ridiculous. Just an example as I still have the one I bought in '95. Add shipping for it being used, they're never getting rid of that thing. I did get a "used" Engl fireball 25 for $1K from them. New they're $1350 and this was in new condition inside the original box with the original packaging. I swear someone opened the box, looked at it then sent it back. Not a scratch and works perfectly. Sometimes you get lucky.

    Yeah I wanted to skip all the shipping and all the bullshit on reverb and I didn't want to deal with the 20 to 30% Cut the local music stores who have established Reverb stores would take... the buyer used Reverb as a price point guide, the same as if he was buying a car... yes I accepted less but wanted to move the gear and he was a motivated buyer....
    I've only purchased two items both under $1,000 on reverb in the last year and it worked out fine.
    There's just not a lot of money to be found right now if I listed maybe after Thanksgiving like I should have I might have found better, more motivated buyers

    During the pandemic, everybody’s home with nothing to do, Trump sends everyone a shit load of money, so they all buy guitars. The guitar factories get caught flat footed, so they ramp up production like crazy to meet the new demand. Pandemic’s over sorta, people are going back to work Realize they don’t need six guitars anymore and put some of them up on reverb. Plus the guitar factories are cranking. guitars out like crazy. Supply is up, demand is down. Great time to buy a guitar, yay.
