Why a Telecaster is the Best First Guitar (Not the Stratocaster)
I got a severe amount of hate from my video of my personal reasons I wouldn't recommend a Strat as somebody's first electric guitar. This is a kind of follow up. I firmly believe the Telecaster, whether it is made by Fender, or Squier, is the better choice as a platform to learn on and learn from.

A few valid points for sure but I still think a strat is the best first guitar. There are many strats without whammy bars and I feel like it's just a way more versatile type of guitar. With a strat you can play really clean stuff just as well as heavy stuff. A tele is more focused on the clean stuff, maybe a bit crunch but it doesnt go too with tons of distortion especially when its a single coil tele. Same for humbuckers vs single coils, they are just a lot more versatile and the warmer sound makes it more comfortable to play. I think versatility is the number 1 priority for your first guitar bc you dont know what kinda of music you are going to want to play in a month or a year or 2 years when just starting out. Buying a guitar that wont force you to get a new one very early on just to change genres is great. My reccomendation for a first guitar is a HH strat. Without tremolo might make it a bit easier in the beginning but probably its still a good idea to have one. At some point you will feel like its missing and want to buy a new guitar for it. The tuning stability is not that much worse and if you get a clip on tuner along with it it's not too big of a deal to keep in tune. Most of the Ibanez GRG series is great for beginners.

I think your arguments are right and the Tele is best across the board for the particular reasons you mentioned. But I do agree that if someone doesn't want to pick up the guitar to play because it's not the one they want to play then they are less likely to play. So individual circumstances should have wiggle room for personal taste on the cool factor. I never got the strat I wanted as a kid and only played tele's and acoustics. In hindsight, it was perfect since I didn't really need to maintain it much (I'm pretty lazy on that front), but I do wonder wonder what would've been different if I had gotten the strat I wanted. At this point I'm not super interested in vibrato bridges anymore (maybe one day) but I am trying to convince myself to get an evertune or something eventually. Got some work to do before any of that though.

I wholeheartedly agree. My first guitar was a Young Chang Tele. I still have it and love it. One of my life goals is getting a real one some day. By the way, comparing it to the AK47 is so spot on. I really had to laugh. But it's true. It's just the perfect all-purpose no-bullsh*t guitar. Beautifully designed understatement evergreen instrument. Great sound. Fierce attack if you need it. What more can you ask for? On another note: I hated the Strat from the first time I had one in my hands. There are too many reasons to list, but nothing about this guitar is for me. To me, it just feels wrong on every level. And it's definitely not a beginner guitar. It's honestly more frustration than fun with these things. So again, I'm 100% with you on that one.

Austin- I enjoyed your video very much; I purchased a Fiesta Red model with a maple neck in 1998 for $400 (with soft gig bag). I was told the California E.P.A. tightened its ventilation standards and the Corona plant could not spray the polyurethane finish. So they were painted in Mexico for two years, until the Corona plant was upgraded. Some describe it as a '62 reissue. They were selling Telecasters for the same price, wish I bought one of those too.

Gotta say, still think a strat is a good beginner guitar, especially if you have a small budget. The way that a stratocaster single coil is designed is for a very bright sound; therefore, when you get a cheaper instrument that compromises wire quality by diluting the copper, the muddiness caused by the diluted wire and use of other cost cutting measures such as weak ceramic bar magnets and steel rods as opposed to magnetic polepieces sort of balances itself out. For a while, I had an old les paul copy from the '90s, and it was super hard to work with. The tone was as dark as could be, I would often mistake the sound of the bridge pickup for the neck pickup because it was just that muddy. If you're on a tight budget (Say $200 or under), a stratocaster's design sonically complements the cost-cutting measures needed to make a guitar in that price range.

I've gotta tell ya... The Tele CV is a very good first electric, but among many choices. But I think you are off on a few things. String thru body vs top loading MAKES NO DIFFERENCE AT ALL in tuning stability or tone. Tuners on the same side as opposed to 3+ 3. No difference in tuning stability or tone. FWIW I *hate* string-thru. More hassle than top loading. Stratocaster's tremolo can be locked down for tuning stability... OR set for FLOATING, additional options not available on a Tele. Strat's contours are more comfortable. Can reproduce Tele sounds, but not so much the other way. Les Paul's have more contour and more comfortable, especially at the bridge area. Epiphone Les Pauls are a great deal as are the Squier CV's. But the Tele, while a good choice is not the only choice. Trust me. I've got/had them all. Just sayin'.

They won't ever thank you for getting a tele when that's not what they wanted and will be more likely to lose interest in it. I would say if someone is looking to get into guitar, who likes metal, they are probably better off with and Ibanez or Jackson with at least one humbucker. If they are more into blues, indie or punk they should go with a Telecaster.

My friend has a PRS he has decided to sell that I covet and may purchase. It’s the old original (I’ve no idea what model name) before they offered a cheaper line, it’s the honey colored, AND it predates the bird inlays on the fretboard that I have never liked. I want it as: it’s a truly stunning instrument, and that that PRS model has, to me, become iconic. I would like to offer a buddy his/her/their choice “grab the Strat or a Tele. Oh, here is a Lester, we got a Ricki 365 or you can pick on this PRS…” However, when I saw the Silver Sky, I thought “So. PRS makes a Fender Stratocaster now? Why? Fender does a pretty good job with Strats already.” Enjoyed the video. Liked, subbed and such. 🙏🏽✌🏽💙 from Minnesota

I don’t understand it, I have two Gibson’s that I absolutely adore (A Standard Les Paul and a Standard SG.) [Best guitars I’ve ever owned.] I would point out however that I can setup my own guitars at a reasonable level and I’ve seen people sell guitars for the dumbest of reasons (Basically they barely knew how to change the strings on their guitar, let alone adjusting the truss rod or raising or lowering the pickup height.) I will say however that Fender makes the best guitars overall when it comes to affordability but the high end Gibsons I’ve had great experiences with. YMMV.
