Why The SG is Becoming The Go-To Gibson for Younger Guitar Players

I've recently become an SG guy, and I really think more and more young guitar players are turning to it as their staple Gibson guitar model for these reasons. If you haven't heard of Grace Bowers do yourself a favor and check her out!

Link: sweetwater.sjv.io/q4QYXg Legitimately one of the best all-arounder guitars I've had the pleasure of playing in a long time. Amplifier is a Fender Twin Reverb Tonemaster, and the overdrive used is a Wampler Tumnus. Sorry if the Japanese car analogy is a little abstract but it made sense to me!
Why The Gibson Guitar Company is Going Nowhere. From a Younger Guy's Perspective
Переглядів 6 тис.2 місяці тому
I've heard plenty of times that Gibson only makes guitars for baby boomers, and that their products and legacy are going to die with that generation. I think this has no basis in reality. All my life I've been watching the guitar players I looked up to play Les Paul's, SG's, Explorer's, and ES-335's; and I don't think that is going to stop anytime soon.

Fender Mike McCready Stratocater 1 Month Later (Is It Worth The Money?)

This guitar has been controversial because of it's price so I figured I would make a 1-month review of the Mike McCready signature Strat and really try to address whether or not I think the guitar is worth the $1,900 that it costs. Just some thought vomit and semi-complaining about how I had it harder when I was younger. The cheap gear you can get today, combined with the insane access to information I think learning how to play guitar today is an amazing opportunity to have.

Sorry for the clickbait title. I have been thinking lately about how immensely different the Gibson Les Paul is when you compare individual instruments to each other. What makes a Les Paul a "good" Les Paul? Furthermore, why is a "good" Les Paul so absolutely incredible? What do you all think?

I find the reverb on mine to be pretty terrible but other than that it's a very utilitarian amp that sounds as good as anything you'll ever need
@@kieranflemingifythere's definitely better digital reverbs
I have 2. I gig with one and have one set up for practice. I use the clean channel exclusively with pedals to get from clean to overdrive. Great amp!!!’nn
Dude, you gotta open that cab up and tell your viewers what type of speakers are in there. You can't give a full, solid review of an amp head without identifying the speakers it's coming through. I don't think you have any idea how much the speakers change the sound of an amp. It's a couple screws man. Open it up so people know what's fully going on. Saying a Marshall cab just isn't cutting it.
I got one a couple months back. I play in a covers band (rock pop). my main guitars for a few years have been a CS nocaster (99) and a parts caster Strat with a fender Mex RW neck. it's actually pretty good, I also have a MX Strat with roasted maple and CS fat50s. all through a Twin. I'm just giving background here because. I was surprised at just how good this MX McCready Strat is, it's becoming my main guitar, last gig I used it nearly exclusively. great sound, the neck Pup is very usable get all the Strat tones out of all of them. when I went to look at one and try in a shop I was sceptical about what the finish would be like having seen previous MX "road worn" type... again its pretty darn good. I say go give it a go you will hopefully be pleasantly surprised as I was. for money? yeah... all day
I got a mint 2011 Epiphone SG for only 125 euros (roughly 130 dollars). One of my favorite guitars. I put P90 pickups in it and a piezo bridge, it's so fun and versatile.
Peavey used to be a solid brand with super reliable and bulletproof products. Their Transtube amps were played by every young guitarist back in the 90's, since they were affordable and reliable and sounded great. I live in Europe and Peavey was literally everywhere back then. However I think that their current negative reputation can be attributed to two things. First they moved their production overseas, which hurt their reliability status. And second they were featured on "Undercover Boss", after which their reputation took a serious nosedive. Also all of their miniheads and combos use the smaller EL84's, while a lot of guitarists prefer the bigger EL34 and 6L6 tubes. That being said their products are still great, perhaps not as reliable as back in the 80's and 90's, but still very useful and decent sounding.
I'm just commenting to be the 69th comment.
Hell yeah 😎
I have a classic 30 with upgraded transformer and speaker and it eats blues jrs for breakfast with no pedals required and fits in my car better than a hot rod deluxe. Great all in one package.
I like the classic gain with pedal. Heck it made everything my sound and good.
Need an amp $20. Fender 15. Don't pay $50
I'm sure you hear this all the time but you sound like Heath Ledger's Joker!
@@xcx8646 I don't think that's a good thing lol
@@Randolphguitars No, it's all good 😃
Keep seeing these at the music store. i finally plugged into one of the combos and love it. Our local store is owned by an old 80's rocker dude that loves Peavey and most of his amps are Peavey. They're out of my budget at the moment ($600-$800) but i'd love to get my hands on one. They're criminally underrated.
Older rocker here: I have this amp and have said this same thing about it for years! PEAVEY was a staple brand for many years, but they got pigeon holed into the low-brow metal scene and their reputation diminished. The company has since done a poor job of marketing itself
Got mine in that exact same color last week - $499 on Sweetwater. I love it, just need to lower the action. I usually play 9s (and this came with 10s), but I think 10s work on this guitar due to the shorter scale length. I loooooooove the thick neck on it.
Excellent video! I prefer the DSL40CR. Just my two cents. And thank you for NOT using a Strat! I’m sick to death of them!
Growing up, my grandfather used a giant peavey PA with two 15 inch monitors as the amp for his acoustic guitars and cuatro. My first amp ever was a peavey rage trans tube that I still have. My buddy used a peavey valve king in all of our bands for years and it always sounded fantastic in any tone setting. Every time I see these amps I get excited. I’m gonna get one. Just gonna sell my TM36 and buy a waza craft blues driver and this head.

JSX or Triple X 2 fitted with 6L6 tubes are peaveys real sleepers.
You can move your strap button and eliminate that neck dive
Gotta agree, they aren’t for everyone, but they are awesome…. I can’t decide if I like playing my SG more than my Paul… I’m a Strat guy so maybe that’s why I kinda lean towards the SG…. Which I wasn’t too sure about then instantly just bonded with it … people should be aware though that once you have one in your hands looking down the neck, it kinda seems like it’s a mile long highway 😆
Well I don't know why they would want one of those either if it was a matter of being old. The SG isn't exactly a new axe LOL. Younger guitarists aren't even buying the old brands let alone models. New names are taking over mostly because the bang for your buck on them is so good. I paid 95 for a strat with gig bag and then added about 150 in parts to it and this is better than most of the stuff the older brands offer now. Younger players lack the cash to go buying a prs or some other high dollar instrument when they just want to play something nice they can afford today.
I don't know that they made a lot of them, it's not something you see available very often. Certainly not like Classic 30 combos. The Classic 50 head is pretty sweet too but again, you rarely see them for sale.
There's a fair amount of em on sale on Reverb right now my guy. Good deals galore too. There's even a few Classic 100 heads.
The POST gain is a master volume.. its Peavey labeling.. and this amp with a boost can do metal.. easily.. jack of all things.. this is the modern Peavey Classic amp.. I have a Delta Blues 15.. awesome amp..

@@joerobertson795 couldn't agree more! I own more than 1 Peavey amp. There's a reason EVH played Peavey for so long.
1 because it’s not really considered a metal amplifier more for blues country that kind of thing but it’s fantastic for what it does . 2 also any Peavy will forever live in the shadow of the 5150 circuit. That’s why nobody talks about it because it’s not for everybody.
@@Waycooljr5 fair points
Very fair points, it is a cool little amp and I'm a metal guy. I'd buy one to have for practice or just noodling around though for sure. Even the King's amps are King's. Long live EVH and the 5150! 🤴🎸🔥
@@MainPrism it is a cool lamp. It does sound good but everything that Peavy has made no matter what including JXS or whatever Joe Satriani, his amp was called the triple X whatever it was it always lived in the shadow that 5150 even the new invective people don’t think about because they release that 6505 1992 whatever is called everything lives in the 5150 shadow in PV makes great stuff. I don’t think Pd’s made anything that was bad.
Am 69 year old retiree have been playing since middle school. Never took the time or had the equipment to get "good" at it. This year acquired a Marshall Origin 50, Boss GT-1 effects board, a Gibson SG Supreme and a Gibson 330 and taking lessons. Now feel like anytime I am not playing guitar is wasted.😊
You are playing a Standard SE 594 Singlecut
For the DSL Combo amps, the 40 is the way to go. It has 4 channels and master volume pots as this only has the 2 channels and no master control. With the 40, I can really drive the amp in the channel volume and use the master as an attenuator to keep the volume at bedroom levels if I want to. Marshall shouldn't even make this amp, the 20 head is awesome, but the combo is what I am talking about. The 40 is usually within $100 of this amp and is far superior in every way.
Totally agree. I play Ramones style punk rock. Had the 20 for about 3 days and returned it. Had the 40CR (not the 40C) for a year and still love it.
I personally prefer the 339. I have both a 335 and 339. The 335 is my slide guitar that stays tuned to a chord.
I think in his category it is an excellent amp, it shines with 'mid' output section. It makes me think as well to the Vox night train 15w g2 which did not get the love it might have diserved. There are a lot of amps like that on the second hand market available for a small price.
I fully understand the Gibson Sg and love them.

Opinions on guitars are subject to individual taste, preferences, favoritism, etc. so …… try it for yourself and see. I have the new custom and the 59’ standard. Flawless build, killer sound/ playability and feel. No fret edge issues on either of mine. The VOS finish to me is like a satin finish. I’m cool with it, no drag issues when your hands warm up like on a glossy finish guitar. Personally I think they are well worth the money !!! Maybe I got lucky and just got 2 really killer guitars, every brands QC issues. I love mine, not that my opinion matters. 🎸
Sg is old as well. Way more way better designs now. But hey. The complete pos people at gibson are great at selling poorly made junk to idiots!
Baseball bats are made of Maple. So, yeah it is hard! 😅 I call the tone from my Telecaster's bridge pickup, an ICEPICK THROUGH THE FOREHEAD! 😫 Regarding the "SG Neckdive" I do NOT often walk around with a guitar simply hanging freely from my neck. I have necklaces for that. When I am strapped to a guitar, it is because I am PLAYING it. When I am playing it, my left hand is under the neck because my fingers are fretting strings. My left hand prevents gravity from pulling the guitar neck to the floor. 🤪
Great guitars, crappy company. I really wish I didn't like them (the guitars) so much 😆.
I've always liked the look of SGs and the feel of the neck due to the scale/radius is like my LP. However, most that I have picked up I could tell without even putting a strap on would neck dive. I know you can find some that don't and there are ways to mitigate it but it's always been too much of a turn off to me. I hate the feel of a guitar weighted like that.
The guitar is very beatiful
I tried one. 594 is perfectly build but both of my Gibson LP's sound better.....
I picked up a used PRS S2 McCarty 594 DC earlier this year and it played and sounded so good I sold my Gibson Les Paul. I did swap out the pickups and electronics as the neck pickup was too dark, pots were scratchy, and switch was really stiff. New ones have the USA LT pickups which would probably sound great out of the box.
@@JarickL I can see how the neck could be too dark

@Randolphguitars Yup, I got the gold one. I think it would look better with birds instead of moon inlays. The color looks really great in person.
Nice guitar I tried one out recently just like the one you have unfortunately and unbelievably they set the nut incorrectly And when I would bend the high E The string would roll off of the fret board... And I've always heard great things about P.R.S but this was my personal experience really really turned me off
Very informative. I was foolish enough to sell my '91 Standard, '61 style, years ago, for way too much. Early '90's Gibson tonewood is now the thing to go after. It did already sound amazing acoustically. But - that fat neck you mention, would kill this one for me. I love the '60 neck on my '11 Classic Custom LP; it solved the big problem I had on that SG - the neck. I guess it's no more SG's for me I'm afraid...!
