Building a beer bottle cap cable reel table using bottle tops and epoxy resin

- Last year I made a small beer bottle cap table using beer bottle tops and epoxy resin, which you can see here: • Beer Bottle Cap Table ...
This time around I have used a large wooden cable reel to make this table, along with beer bottle caps, grout and epoxy resin. The table is trimmed with a wood edging and finished in woodstain.
I sourced bottle caps locally and up-cycled a builders cable reel to make a prefect recycled table. It is mounted on wheels so it can easily moved around the home without causing any damage.
#bottlecaptable #beerbottlecaptable #cablereeltable
Showing the process for putting on the edging would have been very useful....
Its a 65MM bean, nailed on in 4inch spaces, then sealled to the base of the reel. Quite easy in the grand scheme of things. You can buy the trim from any roof and guttering supplier. I used a light oak effect version.
I know 😒
@@MattGiles do you have a link or anything as I can’t find it
I have done these before and I am offering some advice only. When you do these types of projects always ensure your epoxy is covering all parts of the top, you don't want things sticking up because in the future when you get scratches and gouges in it you can sand it down and reapply more epoxy over the old. In this case the beer caps may take some scuff damage when sanding is done. I hope this is helpful and not hurtful.
I love the idea of gluing down and filling most of the space with grout, as the epoxy resin is the expensive part by far.
Have made 4 tables since i seen this 6 months ago, certainly the tables get better and better as you do them and valuable lessons along the way, pity i cant load some pics. and thanks for shareing in the first place
Peter Pearce I’m about to give my first one a go.
Any beginners advice for me ?
@@raybans8712 Yes....get the drum top level and make sure all yr Caps are glued down secure. Be sure to fit the outer edge and seal it with some silicone , to prevent Resin leaks. Also......dont do what i did and start Caps from the middle!!! start from outside Border and work in , that gives u some wriggle room in the centre if yr Caps are a little off centre.
Joe Bristow thanks joe appreciate that
@@raybans8712 cut the MDF to size and ge it perfect, make sure the edging is good, on the firt table i used pressed cardboard and other had metal rolled and results 10000% better
Any ideas or am i doing something wrong?
What a great project. I would love to give this a try. I just either need to wait for the pubs to be open again or take up drinking again. This could work out to be an expensive project!
Great craftsmanship. I hope when I start this project (once I move out in a couple of years time) it's just as good! Already started collecting bottle caps
+Bullyanho hey thanks 👍🏻
Thanks for sharing! I made a table for myself and IT worked out perfectly! Thanks again!
It would be cool to make one made of just Labatt blue or your favorite beer only.I would make one where every single cap is different.
I just finished my first little end table penny top. Fun hobby stuff to do.
Thanks for the inspiration, I have completed table 1 and a lot of learnings were to be had now to make a few more
I would love to make one like that and I wished there step by step instructions in this video
Tnx Matt! This is awsome. I'm gonna make this on my counter top on my boat. Just got my hands on 20kg of caps. Tnx for inspiring me.
Looks great. You skipped the whole edging part. Can you show us how that was done.
I plan to make another one at some point and a refresh video
Matt Giles how did you get the fine wood finish around the edge
I was wondering that part as well. I’m working on a bar for my garage and was thinking that edging. Great Video!
Does anyone know where to get this edging?
@@Gunnergordy91 I used 6 mil ply. Easy to bend. May get slight crack but when sanded gives nice effect
Very clever idea 💡 and gorgeous work!❤
Thanks for the idea! I made one with spent shotgun shell caps. Was a mission getting all the brass off the shells but definitely worth it. Would post a pic but have no idea how on here
that black grout filling looks great.
Hi looks great however instructions seriously lacking information for first times on a project like this. Steps were missed..like the band around the edge and what materials ands quantities needed. A better explation would be appreciated.
Appreciate that, but when i made the table i was making them for a job, so didnt give away exactly how i made it as i was trying to sell them. Kionda defeated the object slightly. But now im not selling them, so ask away, id happily advise in fully. Might even make another one this spring
@@MattGiles hope you don’t mind me asking what the black stuff you used on top of the caps was, cheers
Ive built this table and it came out great!!! biggest issue I had was getting that goddamn edging!!! in the end I used 3 pieces of very thin Ply and ordered copper head nails to fi it all way round. I know Matt wants too keep some stuff secret and wont tell anything about the edging. The rest is standard Tile grouting and glue and Resin which has all the harderner etc in the Pack.
What did you use for the edging on yours mate?
Good idea for your edging. I used UPVC trim from a roof store ;)
@@MattGiles thanks for the reply Matt!! ive been trying for months to source some nice copper edge to finish but cant buy it anywhere here in Aus....unless i order 100 kg of copper band. I think it would look deadly!!!
@@MattGiles Hi matt, is the edging this Upvc Door or Window Trim Architrave 5 Metre Coiled Length 65mm? It comes as a coil pack? Thank you.
I believe this is what you used for the edging ?
www.eurocell.co.uk/trims-and-cills/trims-quadrants-and-angles/65mm-x-6mm-pencil-round-flat-architrave-in-oak-x-5m - The pins on the outside to fix it onto the table are they fixing pins / nails Oak colour from Eurocell as well.
Nice just watched your penny floor video
What is the project supplies you used?? This is exactly what I want to do
Just caught up with the video, great job! Thanks for taking the time to answer (most) of the comments (cos not everyone took the time to read the earlier comments). All of the elements are covered and I am about to collect them and start the build, wish me luck?
If you made one, would love to see it. Did you make a video too?
I thought it was cool as hell but then when you did the epoxy that just set it off!
What's put around the top after 2:35 it's like a flexible plank?
Can you please please make a list of ingredients in the description?
Yeah sure thing, keep checkong back it will be up there soon
Great job. I have 2 I’m making but I appreciate process & explanation 😔 I just subscribed to your page . I like what I see.
nice job fella, nice ink too
hello what and the glue that you gave me to stick the capsules? and what's the black thing you did for me to do the join thank you so much
Bonjour,
Superbe table respect !
Pouvez vous me dire quelle est la patte noir que vous utilisez pour cette table. Merci d'avance
What did you use for the border please?
Hi I'm in the process of building this but struggling to find the edging! I've contacted uPVC suppliers but they all state that it's 6mm thick and wouldn't bend enough! Can you help at all? I'm UK based and struggling!! Thanks
Hi,
What is the white thick stuff you use to put the beercaps in/on?
And
What is that black thick stuff you use fill the gaps between the caps?
I’m gonna make a wall of beercaps and i used glue and kit but both didn’t worked as planned.
The white stuff is mortar that you would use to put tiles on a wall and the black stuff is grout
Hi I am making a table the same but cannot find anything to edge the table with before I pour the resin in. Can anyone recommend what to use as an edging and where to source from please
Damn, this looks so amazing!
How do these surfaces fare for scratches? I'd almost want a glass panel to go over it to preserve the epoxy forever.
Hello, by any chance, do you have the link to the grout you used?
I am making my own now, curious as to what did you put over the top after grinding the bolts off
Thin 5mm mdf sheet
Mate what's the black grout you put on before the proxy ? And what's the stuff you use to stick the bottle caps on with ? I'm a complete beginner and fancy a project during lockdown
Awesome job bro , if you don’t mind what’s the black stuff that you put in between the caps ??
Says in the description mate, it’s black grout 👍
+joshua seruntine it’s just standard tile grout, get it from any tile merchant
Whats it like for sniffing lines off ?
lol, quality geez
When wiping away the grout from the surface of the coins with the sponge/ cloth as lightly as possible, I still managed to scratch most of the caps from the fine grit in the grout. Bit of a problem that I don't know how I could have done it differently if done again
+Colman O'Brien what grit grout did you use
I had the same issue but I sprayed the caps with a high gloss lacquer before grouting n it worked
Dude this is so cool! Can I ask a quick question, what type of wood do you use to wrap around the edge?
That's the same Question I have
Its upvc edging that u can get at any window making company in many different colours
shaun watson yes and also anywhere that sells fascias and soffits for you’re roof line
Hi mate really good work. What was the adhesive you used to fix the bottle tops down please? With the UPVC trim was it easy to fix around edge of table without splitting when fixing?
What grout and resin did you use please? Xx
Hi
What kind of grout did you use to fill the table mate? And where did you buy it?
what material is the round piece you attached with screws? also this inspired me to try my own spool table. thanks.
this man has the patience of a saint
It would be nice if you could explain step-by-step what you're doing. Like what's that board you're putting on in the very beginning? Cardboard? Or what?
The board is a 4mm hardboard just to make the base of the cable reel flat for the caps to sit well :)
Bonjour très belle table, quel épaisseur de votre résine epoxy que vous avez mise?
Matt, im Dan, I liked your video, can you reply with a list of ingredients to use to make a table, besides the table and bottle caps. With this covid crap, I have more time, after work, on my hands and have been keeping caps for months, now I know what I want to do with them. THANK YOU Dan.
Read through the comments, he tells just about everything
I have some of those bottle tops :D
Can you keep it outside all year round??
Hi Matt,
Question :- Could I use MDF instead of hardboard and what did you use to "glue" the bottle tops ?
Many thanks, Gary.
Great table !!
It was tile adhesive. Just like tileing your bathroom. With black grout to fill in the gaps
Yeah MDF would work, i used tile adhesive but have used different types of glues i the past which all worked. Its finding whats best for you really
@@MattGiles what's the tool called you used to spread the resin?
Any chance for a link for the edging as you didn’t show anything of it
Hy i want to know how many quantité of resin did you used please ?
Great idea and finished product! How did you get the black grout off of the caps?
Its a time and drying judgement call. Getting it just right so it hasnt dried hard but is still enough to wipe off without puling from the joints.
@@MattGiles Thanks!!
put it on and wait aprox 1 mins.....wipe off with a damp sponge until u get all the excess grout off.
SORRY....that should read - 15 Minutes wait.
Its tile grout, so it wipes off when partially dry
What you use for the edging trim
Hello Matt, Im just drinking my way through 300 odd bottles to make a table like yours. After you have spread the resin, do you run a straight edge across the edging to make sure its flat? Also ive seen a lot of people apply a heat gun or blow torch to the resin to get rid of air bubbles? I take it you had no issues there.
Cheers mate
If you get self levelling resin you shouldn’t have any issues. I also used gorilla glue to stick them as it’s quicker and dries clear. I found it didn’t work as well with tile adhesive. You shouldn’t need a blow torch.
What was the black stuff?
Grout
Amazing job Matt- Looking into doing a similar table using coasters instead of bottle caps. Could I still use the same grout and epoxy or would that destroy the Coasters. Really hoping to make this work. Any advice appreciated
Super. Love it.
How much Epoxy resin I need for a 3ft x 3ft circular table?
This is a thing of beauty
the jump at 2.35 ... what wood or material did you use as an surrounding?
Where can I get the epoxy I'm doing the same as your project in the UK an which types, complete beginner
Ebay
A few questions. 1 where did you get the wooden ring you put on the outside?
2: what is that black stuff you put in between the bottle caps?
I agree both those questions but I think the wooden spool is what they use to wrap cables so probably check local electrical trade shop. But my question is how did you do the ring around the edge, that part seems to be left out, obviously without it you couldn't use the resin
It's upvc edging you can get it from most window fitters/ manufacturers
Hi, great job! What did you amuse for the round edge? Looks great!
I used a PVC bead from a local hardware store
Looks awesome! Thinking about making one for outside, is there a certain epoxy resin I should use?
Hello Matt, Sorry to bother you but after seeing this video on facebook through LadBible (who haven't put your credit on by the way the arseholes) I have spent the last 20 mins finding a way to contact you. I noticed the outside ring of bottle caps are all the same which is great but on the next ring in there is 1 of the same bottle caps. Booooom OCD kicking right off. Was just wondering if you could maybe take it all back apart and swap it round with a bottle cap further in or replace it with another. I am currently sat in the cupboard under my stairs and can't find the strength to get out after seeing this. Further more my cat needs feeding and she will probably only last a week or so without food so if you could get it done in that time frame then that would be great. I won't sleep until it's done either so if it's not quickly I will end up hallucinating and eating one of my fingers. Again.
hahaha
Cracked me up
Did you let black grout dry before wiping clean?
You have to wipe it off with a damp sponge before it sets.
Trabalho lindo!!!! Parabéns!!!
U didn't show putting the lip/rim around it ?
I want to know where to get the round thing that is around ?? What is it called
SPECTACULAR 👍🏽👍🏽
Hello Matt,
I would like to start of by saying awesome job on the table! One thing I am curious about is what you used as a cover for the spool table at 0:44. Thank you.
Just a thin hardboard
Hardboard
I have a large tree/natural wood slice that i want to make a bottle top table, would i need to seal the wood with something first or just glue bottle tops straight on? Thanks
Where did you get the edging please
How long do you let the grout dry before whipping it with a sponge. (Reply asap)
Please reply now!!!!
8 months approx
I am doing the same but my Polystyrene molding trim keeps snapping in half when I try wrapping the trim around the table. what did you use for your table edge?
Amigo espectacular su video. Que clase de producto es la masa negra
Es frague
Matt,
What did you use to stick the bottle caps down initially, and how long should it be left before applying the grout?
Tile mastic works. That's what I use
What did you use for the edging mate. I’m starting one myself now and basically learning as I go. I work in a timber yard at home timber and hardware, so I’ve got access to most things. But the edging what did you use? I’m also doing a bucket in the centre for beers and ice
Jayden Van Dort it looks to me like he used a piece of pvcu (plastic) trim which you might use on the fascia or soffit if you’re roof.
Its UPVC edging trim
hi , this is fantastic.
Could you please tell me where you got the trim from. i cant seem to find it listed . i dont know wether i am using the right search terms or not.
Many thanks . paul
Littlebigmouth looks like something you would find in a roofing store. (I’m a roofer)
We use things like this on fascias and soffits and finishing around loft windows
Ray Bans thank you bud
Can someone tell me the name of the black stuff he’s using to fill the gaps between the bottles?
Grout - used for tiling: www.screwfix.com/p/no-nonsense-no-mould-grout-black-5kg/200hp
Lee Austin Thank you!
Hi Matt I have a few questions as I am planning on doing this project soon. What did you use to stick down the bottle caps with ? Did you wipe away the excess grout when it was wet or dry ? Any other tips you have I would appreciate thank you
Hi,
Looks great. How wide was the spool and about how many beer caps did you use? Thanks!
Awesome!👍🏼
that efes cap over there
Did you have to do any sanding of the epoxy to get that shine
Just great,I’m going to mate one deffo...🍺
What is side panel called been looking and can not find.
Hello, just one question what is the edge that you took and where did you find it ?
Hi, the edging is a 65mm wood effect upvc trim I bought from a fascia and windows supplier. They come in 5m lengths and are extremely flexible allowing for it to be nailed around the edging.
Any advice for anyone that hasn't used Epoxy Resin before?
Mix it thoroughly, and use it all quickly. You have about 15ish minutes to get it all down which is plenty when doing a table. If you are doing a 2-coat pour, please wait until coat 1 is ready. Follow manufacturewr guidelines, thewy are the professionalls and usualy on hand to help and advise.
What did you put down on the top of the spool before putting the caps down?
Just some 3mm ply
Would cardboard work instead of cardboard. You just used it to give you a solid flat surface right?
In my opinion, no
What material did you used to wrap the topping in ?
Hey Matt. Im in the process of making one. I was just wandering, is it tile adhesive you use to stick the caps down with??
Super!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hey Matt, the height of the reel you used. What was the size and did you find it to be a good height to sit at and use? Thanks!
What are the dimension of the drum.
Hi Matt,
Question : What do you use to make the black coating ? Tile glue ?
Thanks in advance for you reply
Jules
I was wanting to find out too. He has grout listed in the description. I'm going to look for that darker color one. We use grout all the time at work but its lighter in color.
Maybe a black tile grout ?
Where did you get the wood trim from?
