Here's What Happened (Why I Cut My Vlog Short)

  • If you followed my last vlog, this is what happened at the end of the night. At first, I was kind of hesitant to share this because it's a bit raw and unfiltered (ergo the tears), but I wanted to open up about some of the more emotional aspects of adjusting to life in Israel and some old wounds that I'm trying to heal. 🤍
Here's a link to that vlog (from earlier in the day):

i’m really sad you’re going through this. it isn’t your fault and you shouldn’t have to think about handling these situations, other people just shouldn’t taunt you. it’s rude and mean and no one deserves that. i hope it gets better and that you’re still able to enjoy making aliyah and connecting with everyone. i hope people become more accepting to foreign people and stop being discriminatory! it isn’t your fault at all, it’s on them for being so tunnel visioned. sending you love! ♥️♥️♥️

So sorry Meorah! Unfortunately, you might have to deal with this issue all your life while living there, especially in a religious community! Being in Tel Aviv might be a better option, because of this! I’m sure there must be a religious community around there! Otherwise, develop a VERY THICK skin and try to ignore it! May God be with you and help you! Don’t get discouraged!

You don't deserve that kind of treatment from others. I'm so sorry that is happening to you. You deserve to feel free to walk down the street in your own home and feel safe, and feel accepted. Being Asian in Israel is hard and I am really sorry that you made these experiences that I made when I was there. I think it's important to be aware that that's partially a cultural thing, which doesnt excuse that in anyway. Personally I learned an appreciation for the openess. I prefer people being direct about how they feel, what they think, also what they think about me than being backstabbing and mean behind my back. It's a trade off.

you are very courageous woman. They are many challenges that you will face but please know that you are not alone. You have Sorah, Rifkie, Rachel and Leah all proudly looking down on you and beaming w pride on what you have accomplished and the bright future ahead of you. You will continue to have challenges and remember what it says in Tehilim 51;19:
    זִ֥בְחֵ֣י אֱל' ר֤וּחַ נִשְׁבָּ֫רָ֥ה לֵב־נִשְׁבָּ֥ר וְנִדְכֶּ֑ה אֱל' לֹ֣א תִבְזֶֽה׃

But I just wanted to say that you being all that you are (Korean, American, Jewish convert) is a beautiful addition to the Jewish people. Your existence alone gives testament to the beautiful diversity of our community. I'm so proud of you for not only joining our community, but taking the huge step in making Israel your home. So sad and difficult to hear this. I'm so sorry Meorah 💔 I never wished I could just give you a hug more. I connected so deeply with what you mentioned with you seeing an obvious Jewish man, I know that exact feeling you described, and exactly how it feels to notice they don't have that in return when they look at us. I don't want you to feel alone in this life-theme. I will tell you that my orthodox Jewish therapist has totally noted that this too tends to be my life-theme as well. It is just plain hard to be (in my case, a Jewish soul longing to convert but being forced to wait) in your case, Jewish, and so many others in either of our postions, just simply not having been born into it. It is a struggle but worth having. Thank you for sharing your raw experience, I'm so glad you talked about it, and so you are not holding it all in and suffering by it alone. Hashem should protect you and give you the strength of a lion. Alecheim shalom.

Hey, Israeli here. Unfortunately even with how beautiful Jerusalem here it can be quite backwards with the mentality of some people. Please don't be afraid to call out people for being assholes, some people can be really ignorant and need some good whip telling them they are assholes. Do not be afraid to tell them off.
I hope you can find your community in Jerusalem, As far as I know there is a community of Asians in Jerusalem even if it is not large, and there are defiantly many non-Asian groups that will be happy to accept you as well.
Hope things will be better :) sorry some people are giving you a hard time, I recommend also trying find a community and maybe exploring a little even beyond Jerusalem.

UGH. I'm so sorry that you are dealing with this. Do you have some people here? Like a small community that you can reach out to? Those feelings are legit. Feeling like the outsider in the galut is one thing, but feeling like it in Israel is a whole new can of trauma worms. My Husband and I joke that we were never French or American enough where we came from, and now we are THE French and THE American as Israelis. Luckily, our son is straight up Israeli, which reminds us of what we are here for.
Unfortunately, since Israel isn't a super docile place, in order to "fit in" if that's what you want (TBF I don't even know if that's what I want at this point) is going to involve you learning the language so that you can stand up for yourself. Whether you choose to or not is your own business. Regardless, every bully, even the Jewish ones, backs off when they sense strength, and you have plenty of that coming from within you and, I hope you know, from the people who are rooting for you. You have a friend if Beer Sheva if you need one.
