Kirk, Let's face it, you are a born rebel! Who else does a highway 'economy' run in the passing lane? 😂 38-40 mpg at 75-80 mph is darn impressive for a big, luxurious car like the Signia XLE. If given the chance, I am confident I would be getting over 45 mpg while hogging the right lane. 😉
I got about 44 mpg before the colder California weather kicked in getting 39.6 after 2 fill ups post reset in the computer. About 50/50 city/highway driving I found it give it some gas then coast and then feather tap the accelerator, it'll use the battery to maintain my current speed until the charge goes down to 3 bars
Thanks for doing these in-depth reviews. You can't find these to drive where I live, so while I have sat in them, I am buying them without driving. Did this with the Tesla Model 3 and found that I hated it so much after four months, I sold it at a great loss.
@ that is correct 👍🏼 and as more miles pass, the battery will be conditioned to use even more of it’s capacity. This could be why LC’s are getting lower than average mpg out of the box during break-in.
for such short distances you drove (really. compared to using a full tank of gas-trip) small differences in fuel pumped can make a huge difference in mpg calculations
@@AbrahamArthemius You and Kirk have mentioned this, what are we, 12? 🙂 ...but seriously, IMO it's already low enough. It's not that high, really....just a modern-day, extremely mildly jacked wagon along the lines (at most) of the almost unnoticeable (most had to be told) old Golf Alltrack (RIP NA), the current Mercedes-Benz E Series wagon All-Terrain, the Audi Allroad, and the RIP Buick TourX, most of which drivers have noticed hardly any jack-up.. (and they've actually been criticized for just how little). It's just enough to negotiate today's crappy streets, and to be able to do extremely mild backroading, or to ski resorts and the "cottage" along regularly graded rural roads. That, and most (not just seniors) I bet will appreciate the slightly better step in/out.
I got 44+, mostly highway, around 60-70 mph. No desire to accelerate or go fast when sitting in this thing, it just moves, hauling a ton, going wherever, can't care less
Won’t the ECU learn your own driving habits over time to maximize efficiency? I don’t understand what a mileage trial accomplishes when it is not your long term car.
If they used Venza battery which is more efficient and light weight, it will give more mpg but price will go up even more. Do you remember brick phone in 90th? signia used old brick phone battery tech NiMH instead of Venza Lithium-ion battery which is same modern battery tech used on iPhone.

I love the form factor, they need to work on a number of details that Kirk and a lot of people have already mentioned. Since the focus is just on the powertrain on this one, let's start with that!
Kind of disappointed the battery doesn't carry the car at hwy speed. I have a Prius Prime (well into the 13 month of waiting) on order and since I ordered, they have dropped the Prime designation and I am almost about to give up and go straight hybrid with something like the Signia. My 2024 Maverick Hybrid will run on the battery on the hwy from time to time which surprised me. Kind of assumed the Signia would do the same.
I really want to like the Crown Signia because I really want a midsize hybrid wagon. But there's just something about it that comes off wrong, including the terrible color selection. I kinda wish it were just a Camry AWD hybrid wagon.
Bringing a wagon to the American market is a big, bold experiment by Toyota. If the Signia sells in decent numbers, Toyota might consider bringing some of the other wagons it has in production. I know there are 3 different Corolla wagons being built today as well as a car called the ProBox which is reminiscent of the Scion xB. At least 3 of those wagons are Hybrids and one (Japanese Corolla Touring) is sold in a Hybrid AWD trim. I don't think there is a Camry wagon currently in production but I agree, an AWD Camry Hybrid wagon would be excellent.
@@rightlanehog3151 You hit the nail on the head. Its a bold move and one that I wish more companies would make. I'm sick of SUVs. But I don't think Toyota has gotten enough of the mix quite right in the Crown Signia to make it a compelling product... even for a wagon fan like me. What the Crown sedan and Signia got right is the move to a higher roofline, when other sedans are pushing seating and rooflines lower - requiring them to be much longer to have any functional room. But then headroom is tight. Accord, I'm looking at you. But the interiors and exteriors of these Crowns just aren't great, when they really needed to be great in order to sell these niche products at these prices.
@@chrissetina1107 At 6'2" with a very long torso, I admit to being a little obsessed with headroom in this age of ludicrously impractical, 'swoopy' sedans. You may be surprised to learn the Crown sedan has a much higher seat height than a Camry but actually offers less headroom. Although far more practical than the Crown sedan, the Signia is still somewhat lacking in front headroom as Kirk reported. I don't know what constitutes a 'great' exterior or interior but Kirk had an Outback on this channel a week or two ago that costs as much as this Signia XLE. Redline Reviews recently featured a high trim RAV4 Hybrid which cost more. It would not be too difficult to find CX-50s, CR-V's etc that come within a thousand dollars of Signia XLE. I did a little research recently and found today's Signia is priced in line with top trims of the original (2009-2016) Venza. Adjusting for inflation, it may actually be cheaper than Toyota's last raised wagon while providing far more features. The fit and finish of today's Signia and the fuel efficiency are certainly streets ahead of that Venza.
Bringing the premium Crown line to the USA was a very smart move, filling the gap between the upper mass-market Toyota and the entry luxury Lexus, the only real competitor being the better handling and nicer designed premium Mazda.
Kirk, thanks for all your work. Your videos are really helpful in the car buying process. What's your impression of visibility out of the rear of the vehicle? I sat in a Signia for a few minutes not long ago and it seemed like the rear window was tiny and a million miles away compared to a RAV4. Maybe I'm being unfair because I haven't been in a more station wagon-like vehicle in a while.
Hi Kirk. Is the air condition in the Crown as efficient as in the new Camry? Because when you reviewed the new Camry, you said the AC was very good. Thanks.
After all the Insignia reviews you have done, I would like to know : 1) Do you think the Insignia will have the same buyers as the Venza ? , 2) Is there a significant difference in terms of luxuries features and driving between the Insignia and Venza ?

The compact Crown replaced the full size Avalon at at about 30% more cost. My Avalon always gets a little over 50 MPG The Avalon was designed and built in America. The Crown is inported putting a lot of workers out of a job. You can buy a full size Lexus hybrid for a lot less money than the compact Crown
Every car I owned the computer showed better mileage than actual (I.e. compared with using the trip odometer and the gas pump reading). Oh... and using a different pump should not make any difference (unless the gas station owner is a crook) as pumps are to be calibrated regularly and are inspected (or should be).
I like how we’re all just like, ehh it ONLY got 38mpg for a 4200lb luxury vehicle. Lol When fueling up, run the pump on the slowest detent and don’t click it afterwards. When filling up at the fastest rate, it tends to miscalculate a bit. There have been studies on this and it’s usually in the gas stations best interest. The clicking after it clicks will usually just put additional fuel into the charcoal canister as well which can lead to emissions related check engine lights.
I'm very suspicious of the gas pumps not being accurate. My 2007 Prius fuel tank had a bladder that making actual fuel use calculations very variable. Do you know if Toyota has a bladder in the crown signia? The bladder in my Prius was very temperature sensitive.
