My mom is from Sturgis SD. She said my grandfather actually met Wild Bill and Calamity Jane on a trip to Deadwood. He said she was very scarred up from having small pox in her life. My grandmas and grandpas family were settlers in that area. My grandma grew up in an old sod home cuz that area is not very populated with trees so they built their home, where they raised 12 kids, from what was available to build from. They made sod bricks and glued them together from the soil that when wet was a sticky slurry they called Gumbo. When they had snow run off or rain they made sure the livestock stayed off the areas where the water would collect. Cuz animals would die in that miry bog land where they’d sink and get stuck. How fun to participate in the death and trial skit
What a cool story! I had read that she was amazing in helping folks with smallpox. I would love to hear more if you know any more of your grandfather’s stories of the two. Thanks so much for sharing!!
@@popshiking I’ll ask my mom but I know he didn’t travel a lot cuz they didn’t get a car until the 40s. So they had a horse and wagon so only went to sturgis once a month at the most. And only in the late spring until early fall. So I’m not sure there is much more to the calamity Jane and wild bill story. Grandpa was born in 1889, gramma in 1902. But I’ll ask her cuz she’s been connecting with her cousins back there more. It’s a beautiful and fascinating region
I. Love. Deadwood! I'm so glad you not only saw the play, but participated, awesome! My time in the Black Hills contributed to SD becoming my domicile seven years later. I found it humorously clever the saloons are modernized casinos!
Jane Fonda was Cat Ballou and Doris Day was Calamity Jane. Good memories of watching those movies with my Mum. Deadwood looks like a fun and interesting place to visit.
Great video! I enjoyed the museums and history you showed in Deadwood. I was able to visit Mt. Moriah cemetery and see the graves but didn't have time to visit the museums. The view of Deadwood from the cemetery is beautiful, another good reason to go up to the cemetery. I would not stay at the Bullock hotel but it looked interesting. Cudos to you. I assume you didn't experience any paranormal activity.
Another video, another jump into American (hi)story telling with its major twists & turns, getting to know the main characters from another perspective through this interactive experience. I wonder if you ever get bored of revisiting your country's highlights or if this actually gives you the opportunity to approach it differently every single time. Anyways, thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for the kind words! I really feel like the places I visit with Josh come to life when you have some background. Deadwood and Tombstone were two particularly great examples of that. Thx for stopping by!
Really enjoyed my trip to Deadwood. Walking Mt Moriah is no joke. The pathways are steep especially to Bullock’s grave. I also like that the flag flies 24 hrs a day in honor of the veterans
1986, I was on the way to the 110th anniversary re-ride of the Little Big Horn. We cavalry reenactors had just ridden from Fort Robinson to Palmer Gulch near Hill City. We loaded up the horse for the remaining road trip to Montana, but we stopped briefly in Deadwood. Deadwood was dead in those pre-gambling days! In period clothing we walked up to Wild Bills grave. On the way back to the parking lot, I was mysteriously drawn to a grave marker to my left. As if a voice was calling to me, "Hey, trooper come here." I walked the twenty-five yards. Before me was the grave of William Dunn a Civil War Veteran of my own re-enactment unit. Co. C, 7th IL Cav. Decades later, on a return trip, I poured Trooper Dunn a beer in my old tin cup and left some tobacco and my old pipe that I had used for years. I then told this story to the tour group I had led there.
HELLO POPS I ENJOYED THIS VIDEO IMMENSELY ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU TOOK PART IN THE REENACTMENT.SOUTH DAKOTA LOOKS GORGEOUS .I HAVE A FUNNY QUESTION PLEASE DONT TAKE IT SERIOUSLY BUT AFTER YOU GOT UP FROM THE TABLE AND BEGAN TO RUN THEN STOP DID YOU FEEL YOUR KNEE .ANYWAY AS ALWAYS A VERY LOYAL SUPPORTER LARRY FROM LONG ISLAND
Hahaha! I was about to hit that box by the pole so I tried to move around it. Josh teased me about that. It was fun to be in that little skit. The guy who played Wild Bill was great. Thx as always for stopping by.
Our original family name is Bullock. My grandpa was adopted by an aunt after his mom died, and he took on their last name when he turned 18, so our last name is different now, but it should be Bullock. I wonder if I'm related to Seth Bullock 🤔
The Saloon #10 that you showed in this video is NOT the same saloon where Wild Bill was killed. The actual, real Nuttal & Mann’s Saloon #10 is further down the street. The Saloon you showed was actually , back on August,2 1876 when Bill was shot, a dance hall/theater where a miner’s trial was held to convict Jack McCall the man who shot Wild Bill. The saloon you showed is called the “Old Style” Saloon #10, not the actual place where Wild Bill was killed.
Great video Pops, they just keep getting better!
I really appreciate that!
Great job Pops. I didn’t know you were an actor? MARVELOUS 👏👏
I won’t say that I haven’t been nominated for an acting award (I won’t say it but I haven’t! Hahaha!).

Such a beautiful state for you to live in! I had never been but was so impressed. Yeah was fun to participate.
You should be nominated for an Oscar if you ask me 😆 Great video, Pops! 🙌🏽
Maybe one day! Hahaha. Was fun to be in the skit. The wild Bill actor was a great guy.
Wonderful western history... so interesting. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it! I really love western history. So often it’s not what you have been told or have seen in movies.
I love your videos Pops! I am a major history buff and I've been to Deadwood and loved it! South Dakota is an amazing place to visit❤
Couldn't agree more! Thx so much for the encouragement!
Another great job! Very informative!
Glad you liked it! Thx for watching.
Fabulous video, Pops! I can tell you really get into the Wild West stories, and I loved your bit in the drama at the card table too! 😅
Glad you enjoyed it! It’s a fun place with lots of history. I even learned a bit from that drama which was cool.
Great video again! You need an Oscar.
Working on it! Hahaha! Thx for watching.
Enjoyed the video and history lesson.
Cool glad you enjoyed it!

Yep! Two fun movies. It was great.
Loved the video...heading to stay at the Bullock next May
That’s great! It’s a nice spot. Thx for watching.

Yeah that was cool about the flag. Hadn’t really heard about Bullock till we got there. Was an impressive guy.

Wow that’s a pretty amazing story! So cool you were somehow drawn to that grave. Thx for sharing the story and for watching!

You made that scene! I’m surprised you weren’t asked back for the other re-enactment
I had them contact my agent! Hahaha! Was fun to be in that.
Hey Pops! Are you going to do the Buffalo Bill museum in Cody Wy too? Love that you have a channel now!
Great idea! I done some Buffalo Bill stuff in North Platte, Nebraska. I need to put that on the list.

@@popshiking it would! I'll have to do some digging.
They’ll be telling Wild West tales of you 100 years from now pops!
Hahaha I doubt it!
