- The '72 Cardinals were quarterbacked by Gary Cuozzo with Donny Anderson and Johnny Roland at RB along with rookie WR Ahmad Rashad and TE Jackie Smith. The offensive line featured Dan Dierdorf and Ernie McMillan as well as rookie OG Conrad Dobler. DE Don Brumm, LB Larry Stallings and DBs Miller Farr and Larry Wilson led the defense. The Cardinals' 1972 uniforms were perfect, especially the numerical and lettering typefaces on both their red and white jerseys. Too bad they didn't bring these back last year.
It was another disappointing season, but at least they won their last two games and escaped last place in their division.
I miss the Saint Louis Football Cardinals.
I do as well but mainly just miss having an NFL team. The Big Red were pretty mediocre and never won a playoff game but there were a couple near misses in the 1960s playing in the NFL title game prior to having a playoff format. It was all about the city and county fighting over new stadium location. The STL Rams however brought both the best and the worst of teams to St. Louis. I wish St. Louis would have gotten an expansion team for the stadium they tried building with the hotel and entertainment tax a local judge ruled did not need resident approval for public funding since it did not affect people as a whole. I think an owner would have been found for contrbution. Stan Kroenke really bad mouthed St. Louis all part of trying to move to the large TV market of L.A. and this hurt.
I'm from Baltimore and we were done dirty once but I can't imagine it happening twice to one city.
@@georgeford3687 I agree. The first time though was the fault of St. Louis with the Big Red because history proved having an all football purpose stadium was the future. I actually did not know the specifics but it came out in a Big Red history book I bought from a St. Louis sports historien named Greg Marecek. The Rams mess really hurt. I can see why a 20 year old Dome stadium built by public funding really stung because it was called obsolete but all part of Kroenke wanting the large TV market of L.A.. Then St. Louis when forced by Kroenke did some amazing things to so quickly get all the approvals to build again for the Rams but still needed owner contribtion. If only other more important issued were given the same priority by St. Louis. The NFL Relocation committee recommended the Rams stay in St. Louis and an initial vore by NFL owners was in favor of St. Louis. Then only as a result of the STL lawsuit it was learned that only when Stan Kroenke signed an indemnification agreement to compensate NFL owners in the event of St. Louis lawsuits swubg their votes a second time to L.A.. Kroenke though bought the land for SOFI years prior and did need to move since he wouuld have only kept trying. This is why the NFL should have awarded an expansion team that would have been backed well as seen by the UFL Battlehawks now playing in the Dome. The UFL has been good for St. Louis and have become fun here.

Crazy that they had the same record three times in four seasons (1969, 1971 and 1972). Only an 8-5-1 record in 1970 interrupted that string.

Better seasons were coming soon when Don Coryell would become coach in the mid 1970s. with Jim Hart as QB and an excellent offensive line. They won a couple division titles but never won a playoff game. I followed all their years from 1960-1987. Too bad St. Louis City and St. Louis County government fought over location of a new stadium resulting in no stadium and owner Bill Bidwell thought Phoenix would help build a stadium right away yet it took 18 years so they played at Arizona State. The best St. Louis football seasons were the Greatest Show on Turf Rams. The Big Red also had a couple near misses getting in to the NFL title game in the 1960s. Larry Wilson and Jackie Smith likely their best players ever. This was a frustrating season and St. Louis today still remains bitter when Stan Kroenke wanted the large TV market of L.A.. even when St. Louis was prepared to build yet another stadium. An expansion team should have been awarded to St. Louis. The UFL Battlehawks are now the craze in St. Louis.
Where is Jim Hart?
I wondered the same. I looked up his stats and he started playing for the Big Red more in 1967 and split time with Charley Johnson who was their main quarterback most of the 1960s. Charley Johnson had to serve in the military. Looking at his stats he was likely seen as being too erratic and came together better under Don Coryell starting in 1973 with a great offensive line to protect him. From this film it is like he was the number 3 QB unless he got hurt some this season. This was a frustrating season and do remember QBs Tim Van Galder and Gary Cuozzo. The coach was Bob Hollway.
