    My guy gave me a little exercise that will help. Just dry firing, put an empty case on your slide or wherever there's a flat spot. Aim, squeeze the trigger until the hammer falls (or pin strikes) and that case should NOT fall off. If it does, the act of squeezing the trigger is moving your aim BEFORE the bullet leaves the gun. I did that just sitting on the couch "firing" at the TV. Did it until the empty case stayed upright. Next morning did it again for an hour then went to the range and live fire. Folks, the muscle memory will remain. Just try it. It worked wonders for me. It eliminates that flinch and anticipation when you pull the trigger.

      That's not a good exercise for pistols..That's something that people brought over from the rifle training and tried to make it work. It's a great training event to do, but doesn't work that way for pistols..Difference being that you do it for a rifle because it's a shot laying down in the prone and you have the rifle supported by bipod, tripods, sandbags, etc...Then you put the dowel rod down the barrel and put the dime on the rod..So the only movement you get is from the trigger squeeze. The dime or washer falls off the rod if you jerk the trigger..With pistols you have no support for the firearm so you could drop the bullet case just from arm movements instead of focusing on just the trigger action

      Wrong. That just means your mechanics are consistent. You can "squeeze" the gun consistently instead of pressing the trigger which results in. Didn't give it much thought cause I was fine with every other handgun I shot that day. Well he texts me later, turns out the people he bought it from put night sights on it and didn't tighten the set screw so the sights were off. Rare case but it can happen

    EXCEPT when your sights are actually off from the factory! My last Glock 43 and the last Sig P320 both required the sights to be drifted out of the box. You could visibly see how far off the front sight of the Sig was. It had been over inserted into the dovetail. On the Glock the rear sight was under inserted. I have other pistols from both of those companies that were flawless but sometimes guns are assembled on Friday afternoon guys!

      Very good policy with the laser. I just bench rest my carry ammo and do 2 or 3 five shot groups. Then drift the sight appropriately. Then never think of it again. It’s just weird though recent I’ve had two brand new guns in the past year that were both visibly way off. Factory elevation was perfectly fine but dang when your front sight isn’t even lined up with the barrel there is a problem.

      Sometimes the firearm isn't shooting straight. I had a G22 gen4 issued to me in 2014, it was hitting very far left. The rep came out and test fired it. We found it was hitting 2-3 inch left at 10 yards. That was a manufacturing defect. Not two different shooters getting the same result. Until you get that pistol that made it to the shelf that mechanically shouldn't have and no matter how many people (right and left handed) that test it the shots still all go to the same side. I've seen it before (ironically in a glock). Went left no matter who shot, large sample size too including dominant hand, single hand and supported, as well as a large skill level spread. Shot a different pistol and everybody was dead on centerline again. Sometimes, on rare occasion, it actually is the gun. But thats why its important to test and vet tools.

    Its trigger pull that usually causes low to left for a rightie. Many times, it is because the trigger pull is too fast and that moves other fingers and the hand. it will shoot to the right if you are left handed, however sometime the sights are not centered. In that case they need to be moved. The term used is "milking the gun". There are several techniques to help remedy this and it depends on the firearm and your handsize, what you ate for breakfast and a myriad of other things. Try a lot of them and see what works for you. Practice, practice, practice. Peace and Grace. One more thing to add, CCW's are not fashion choices. You may need a smaller gun in summer depending on body size and where you live and other factors. Do not just switch out your carry because you are in a .40S&W mood, or a 10mm mood. Or I have not carried this fancy expensive one in a while. Pick one that work and train with it. The old saying, "Beware the man that only owns one gun, he can probably shoot it very well!" Peace and Grace again.

    I'm calling you out on this cock & bull about low & left and it's shooting technique. The only pistol I had issues with was a G43X that shot low & left. I had my rear sight moved off to one side. Got tired of that. Had a gunsmith check it out for frame deflection. He just used front sight and the pistol shot well. So, I moved my sight back to original and finally decided my trigger pull needed work. A Ghost connector solved my issue. The 5½ lb. trigger pull changed marginally to 4½ lb. But, the travel & break were greatly improved and solved my issue. And, i installed a Viridian green dot which helped even more. If all my pistols shot low & left I'd say it was me. But, it was only the glock.

    Low left for right handed people who are right eye dominant then I agree, but one issue I see has to do with cross eye dominance
    If someone is right handed and left eye dominant (or left handed and right eye dominant) and they have a sight set by someone who isn’t cross eye dominant then the sights will be off about 1 inch to the direction of their primary hand at 10 yards. No elevation difference - just a windage difference and it can be reproduced with a pistol on a bipod with an expert shooter pulling the trigger for them - it’s how their mind maps the sight to the target
    Generally people aren’t cross eye dominant so they don’t understand this problem so they take the same gun and shoot it and say “see your sights are fine”, because that’s what works for your eye dominance
    It’s the same with video game controllers and inverting the controls to get the look up/down behavior that works for your brain
    If the windage only adjustment is made to the direction of their primary hand and the cross eye dominant shooter holds dead center and gets exact POA/POI then it’s not a shooting problem - it’s a brain mapping issue

    I was taught that it’s not just my trigger finger that I have to control but also the three fingers that grip the pistol in addition to the trigger finger. That when we pull the trigger in addition to the trigger finger these fingers also contract sympathetically thus rolling the pistol slightly left and down. Once again it takes lots of dry fire to correct this. This is done by dry firing with one hand index and thumb only and keeping the pistol rock steady. You have to pull the trigger straight back and not contract the three other fingers.

      What if they didn't exist? Lots of pistols before DA. Is it the length of the pull getting 'surprised', heavier pull leading to different grip tension and maybe more time on target, the often longer sight radius giving more detailed information to the eye aiming? Or is it overall that the process starting before even loading being more deliberate like shooting a bolt action? Or was that just what was around at the time and one should train with that which is used in the end?

    I 99% agree. Not 100%, because someone the sights need moved. On our range I have a safe with a 22lr target pistol, and a 22lr revolver. I use those for problem shooters, to get the fundamentals down without recoil, and to show them that (USUALLY) the sights are not the problem. I also will shoot their handgun to confirm its not their sights, AND have them shoot mine, ask to reinforce in their mind that the gun is not the issue, the shooters brain is.
    Example... I shoot in the 290s on the FBI Instructor Qualification course (300 points possible), which I'm required to shoot every time we recertify as a LEO instructor. My best score is a 294, and that day I switched ammo and my first two rounds were 8s. After noticing that, and adjusting I only dropped 2 more points. I put rounds through the same hole, doing the chase drill at 10 yards. The point being, I shoot very well... with my Gen3 and Gen4 Glock... My Gen5 does not group as well, and consistently hits left. At least 25-30 out of 212 gen5s we got a year ago have had to have sights drifted. Including mine. 4 out of 14 instructor has to drift sights. I probably put 1500 rounds through mine, over the course of about 3 months, trying to figure out if it was an issue with the grip angle, thickness, trigger location, etc. Looking for something affecting my grip or my trigger pull. Sometimes the sight needs to be moved.

    Just think about what will happen if you have to use a gun with its sights aligned correctly. Suddenly you'll think that one's broken.
    I think this happens sometimes because a person can't tell whether the consistent disparity in where they arr aiming and where it hits is causes by themselves or the firearm.
    Will be good to hear some tips on how to tell the difference, but I do see some of those in the comments.

    Well, whatever… I’m nearsighted, so I just zero my sights to 36 inches. But the funny thing is, I’m really good at hitting my friends’ targets to the left and the right… although I can’t always guarantee which side gets some. So I just take the middle and shoot forward when we get our lethality on… and so far, so good. 👌🏾 Don’t judge me… unless you wanna but me new glasses, then maybe we can arrive at a compromise. 🤔

    Thank you for making a video about this. I shoot low and to the left a lot (often with good grouping) and have been working on more drills to stop. I know adjusting the sights off zero isn’t the solution.
    What’s the biggest thing you’re seeing that’s causing shots low and to the left (something commonly off in the grip, compensating sight wrong in dominant eye, etc.)?

  • @gregkerr725
    @gregkerr725 Рік тому

    I shoot to the left of center about 2 inches. It is a self problem...and I know what it is....My ironsights used to be right on...still likely are. Problem is my eyes aren't. If your sights are set correctly and you hit center every time, but then you injure your dominate eye...and you shoot with both eyes open.......your eyes will focus differently with one strong eye and one weak eye. Now I could get glasses or have some surgery on my once dominate eye, but have put it off for years. So now if I want to hit center I shoot 2 inch to the right...works every time. As far as your gun shooting where your sights are pointing...maybe...I'm not sure....but I do know that sights aren't always adjusted correctly. I even had a muzzle loader where the rear sight was not tapped at the 12 upright location on the barrel...weird...maybe a jig shifted in manufacturing. You could adjust that sight all you wanted to and never hit. The manufacturer took it back and sent me a new weapon.

    I'm fairly sure I won't get an official response from WPSN because you guys don't read these comments lol but here's a helpful tip I learned actually.
    If your gun is shooting low left. And your doing everything perfect, to include dry fire practice and STILL low left.
    First off. It's a flinch. I had a shooters flinch for about 12 years and didn't realize it until I tried these two methods to both diagnose and solve the issue.
    1. Bring a big bore revolver. I mean like 44 magnum or 454. Has to be six shot cylinder.. load 3 rounds. (So every chamber before and after a round is empty) make sure those 3 rounds are as ungodly powerful on recoil as possible. First shot, then flinch. If you flinched. You have a flinch. Keep doing this and your body will automatically stop flinching eventually.
    Don't have a big bang six shooter?
    Try this.
    2. Go to a range, preferably somewhere out in the middle of nowhere for safety. Grip your carry pistol with two fingers. Thumb and trigger finger. Shoot a whole range session. One, two, maybe 7 times just like that.
    The reason you delete your middle ring and pinky fingers in option 2. Is because those are the fingers gripping harder as the gun jumps.

    So long as the sights are actually zeroed, yes. I’ve seen plenty that weren’t out of the box. That said, pulling left we know for right handed shooters is mostly going to be a weak support hand grip or to much firing hand grip if not both, both of which are very common issues in the pistol shooting community

    • @papimaximus95

      Shooting low-left for a RH shooter is usually either "peeking" or "recoil anticipation".

    • @ShawnHinck
      @ShawnHinck Рік тому

      @UC36h77VGLRNgUTz9klf7OxA nope, it’s typically grip, more likely insufficient support hand grip, this has been shown time and time again with world champion level shooters who also instruct.

    • @papimaximus95
      @papimaximus95 Рік тому +1

      @@ShawnHinck Nope...my first correction for new shooters is ALWAYS peeking. They are dropping the gun just slightly while shooting to see if they hit the target. Next culprit is recoil anticipation. After that it is "throwing" bullets. New shooters want to "help" out the gun giving it a little throw when they press the trigger - going low left. Grip is about follow-up shots...it would go just left - not low-left.

    • @ShawnHinck
      @ShawnHinck Рік тому

      @@papimaximus95 grip is about a whole lot more than follow up shots, fixing grip right away always seems to fix that issue, new shooter or not, especially when it’s pushing it left. If it’s just pushing it low, ok those two things, but as soon as the left component comes in to play, you are working with insufficient support hand grip and/or to much firing hand grip, which is almost always a problem with shooters regardless of skill level. Can the other things also be a factor? Yes, but grip is almost always the main culprit.

    • @papimaximus95
      @papimaximus95 Рік тому

      @@ShawnHinck Poor support hand grip is not a KEY cause of low-left. If it were, then one-handed shooting would not be possible. Handguns are about sights and trigger. We purposely show this in every class by holding the gun upside down, with one hand and using the pinky to pull the trigger. At that point, it is all trigger and sights. Before I would go to grip I would check the finger placement on the trigger. Too much finger can cause it also. But hey, agree to disagree.

  • @RetreatHell
    @RetreatHell Рік тому

    While I absolutely agree in principle regarding the need to learn proper fundamentals, I disagree with not drifting the sights. For one, iron sights need to be zeroed just like a dot (assuming the shooter is good enough to hold a good, consistent group at at least 10 yards… if it’s not consistently grouping in one general area however, I’d definitely leave the sights alone).
    Two, the x-ring of a B8, or the face/CNS of an adversary, don’t know you drifted your sight(s). Do whatever you gotta do in order to achieve accurate hits. Accurate hits are all that matter, it doesn’t matter one bit how you hit the X-ring…. It only matters that you can CONSISTENTLY achieve a high level of accuracy.
    Once a shooter gets better, they may notice they start shooting slightly to the right (or left for a lefty), which means you’re now actually consistently applying proper fundamentals (yay, go you!👏) and will likely need to drift the sight back the opposite direction you originally came from).
    Just another take is all.
