The name Capalbio seems to derive from Caput Album or Campus Albus, due to the white alabasters that characterize the place, but more likely it comes from "Capo d'Alveo", from the name that the castle built in the Middle Ages took. The nickname little Athens derives from the position and relevance of Capalbio in the Renaissance period.
Inside its walls you can "breathe" the atmosphere of past centuries; walking through the alleys, the squares, and the ancient walkways you lose track of time. Capalbio is in fact a beautiful medieval village very lively throughout the year, but especially in summer. From the walkway of the great crenellated walls, rebuilt by Siena, they embrace the whole town center, you can enjoy an exceptional view. The Rocca Aldobrandesca with the imposing tower stands out among the roofs of the stone houses, which overlook the narrow streets of the village. Next to the Rocca is Palazzo Collachioni from the Renaissance period, which houses the piano that Giacomo Puccini used when he was staying in Capalbio.
From May to October Capalbio and its surroundings are animated by festivals, parties and other events. Of particular importance is the Capalbio Cinema International short film festival, an international short film festival held in October.
    Curiosity:
✱It is also known for the beautiful Tarot Garden which is located a few kilometers from the ancient village. The garden is famous for the large sculptures of the French artist Niki de Sante Phalle, which depict the 22 Major Arcana of the tarot cards.
