The vast majority of Italian-Americans have roots south of Rome. Contrast this with Italians in Argentina and Brazil who are more central-northern, and you see some differences in culture and food. All the regions are interesting in different ways--sad they are becoming so similar

My mother came to the US from Napoli when she was 27. Not being allowed to speak dialect in her family, she only spoke pure Italian, which really benefitted me when I finally wanted to speak Italian. Of course, she swore in dialect her whole life so I learned those important words, too☺️🇮🇹

Italian culture? Italian culture does not exist brother and Italy does not exist, I am from the south and my culture has nothing to do with those of the north. We have 6,000 years of heritage from the founding fathers of the West, Italy does not exist and Italians do not exist, we are different peoples with different cultures, as I have already said here in the south we have 6,000 years of Western civilization and culture. Canadian here. To put it very simply: Northern Italy, to me, was almost central European or French. I have never been to southern Italy but my impression is that it's "mediterranean" instead of "continental european".
In fact, the united Italy has never existed, there is no "country" more divided than Italy, because of 1860 today we are without a real identity, we are different countries and peoples that have been forced into this fake union.
Southern Italy has a history and a culture totally different from the north, we are countries that in reality should be divided, not under this fake union, in the north for now it is better only economically but history, Culture and way of life are much superior here in the south, there is no comparison.

My paternal grandmother is from a small town in Veneto near Asiago and my grandfather is from a small town near Treviso and Venice. So different from the south. Family emigrated to France, Sweden, Canada, Australia and the U.S. Some of us are gathering in Italy this summer to visit our Italian family. I'm from Argentina and half the people have a least one Italian ancestor , and we talk Spanish with an Italian accent. We also have a lot of the gestures you have. My great grandfather was from Veneto. I'll definitely go visit/live in Italy .

Just got back from 3 months in Catania! Traveled south to north on mainland and east to west in Sicilia. My favorite region was South Tyrol. I’m from Southern California so that region was so different from what I am used to.

My father's side was from the far south..Aspromonte area..and my mother's side from the farthest north..alpine area of Piemonte. Everything you said is true in my family as well. Unfortunately my parents split up and I believe many if the north- south differences were the cause. So many misunderstandings and differences of preferences, differences in expression, even differences of heat tolerance both in food and weather.. there were constant arguments. Intellectual interests and broadmindedness however were the same. Whew! There really are 2 very different cultural groups here between North and South, much more extreme than in other countries.

I travelled through both and can say that every where I went I found Italians to be friendly, hospitable with great food. Each region has its differences which makes Italy so incredible. As a southern italian, a thing i noticed living in Turin for 4 years, is that while in the south, if it's hot outside people will always wear shorts and flip-flops or sandals, in the north, even in the summer heat people will still wear long pants and closed shoes. There are many reasons i think it's this way but right now in Turin is way hotter than in Sicily so i wish wearing shorts and flip flops outside was more acceptable here.

I've been there last September. I'm Italian but never traveled southern than Rome and once in Positano I asked myself why I haven't been there earlier! It's called the Amalfi Coast but the real pearl is Positano, much better than Capri in my opinion both seen by the sea or walking through them. Many restaurant with amazing view on the coast, but Da Bruno offered such a tuna tartare off the menù that now I can tell the real taste of fresh tuna! CAN'T MISS IT

~25% a my very ethnically mixed roots are to what's now southern half of Italy. Primarily to Sicily n more specifically Palermo, with all the rest pretty much confined to Calabria, Apulia, & especially Campania. My most recent ancestors from what's now Italy are 3 a my great-great grandparents (two via mom's dad, one via mom's mom), all born in Sicily in range of 1856 - 1894
A mia famiglia viene Castel del lago (SE of Benevento-nonno) e Santa Croce del Sannio (N of Benevento-nonna). Despite being so close in proximity to one another, they didn't meet until my grandmother's brother brought her to Philadelphia in America to meet her future husband. I was in Italy four years ago and got close to the areas...but didn't get to the towns-no car. Next trip!

I'm a US/UK dual national with 100% Italian ancestry: mother - Abruzzo and Apulia, father Molise and Ischia. I was planning to retire to Italy, but BREXIT threw a spanner into my plans. I've been on holiday in Italy six times, but do not speak Italian. My favorite area in Italy is in the Apennines as I love to tour the medieval hill top villages. My maternal grandfather's village, Pettorano sul Gizio (3km south of Sulmona) hasn't changed much in centuries and must look like it did when my grandfather lived there before immigrating to the USA.

My Italian side is from Northern Italy Emilia Romaga region and Sicily. Oddly I felt a connection while playing Assassin's Creed 2 like it oddly felt familiar before discovering Italian ancestry.

Thank you for this informative video! In 1988 and 1989 I spent several weeks in Spoleto (Umbria) as a performer in the Festival dei Due Mondi. My fellow musicians and I loved Spoleto and the other small, ancient towns in Umbria, and on rare occasions we were able to take very short trips when we had a day off. I was able to visit Firenze, Siena, Orvieto, Assisi, Roma, and Venezia. It was a wonderful experience! The food in Umbria is spectacular.

The south as you call it is not really south of anyone until the fake union and forced with what is now Italy was the third richest kingdom in Europe... Until 1860 nobody here ever had to emigrate, then the union came if we want to call it that and here we are, you have to study the real story before you comment.

My mother came to the US from Napoli when she was 27. Not being allowed to speak dialect in her family, she only spoke pure Italian, which really benefitted me when I finally wanted to speak Italian. Of course, she swore in dialect her whole life so I learned those important words, too☺️🇮🇹

My father's side was from the far south..Aspromonte area..and my mother's side from the farthest north..alpine area of Piemonte. Everything you said is true in my family as well. Unfortunately my parents split up and I believe many if the north- south differences were the cause. So many misunderstandings and differences of preferences, differences in expression, even differences of heat tolerance both in food and weather.. there were constant arguments. Intellectual interests and broadmindedness however were the same. Whew!

As a southern italian, a thing i noticed living in Turin for 4 years, is that while in the south, if it's hot outside people will always wear shorts and flip-flops or sandals, in the north, even in the summer heat people will still wear long pants and closed shoes. There are many reasons i think it's this way but right now in Turin is way hotter than in Sicily so i wish wearing shorts and flip flops outside was more acceptable here.

I've been there last September. I'm Italian but never traveled southern than Rome and once in Positano I asked myself why I haven't been there earlier! It's called the Amalfi Coast but the real pearl is Positano, much better than Capri in my opinion both seen by the sea or walking through them. Many restaurant with amazing view on the coast, but Da Bruno offered such a tuna tartare off the menù that now I can tell the real taste of fresh tuna! CAN'T MISS IT

My family is from the commune of San Nazzaro Calvi in Benevento
I'm a US/UK dual national with 100% Italian ancestry: mother - Abruzzo and Apulia, father Molise and Ischia. I was planning to retire to Italy, but BREXIT threw a spanner into my plans. I've been on holiday in Italy six times, but do not speak Italian. My favorite area in Italy is in the Apennines as I love to tour the medieval hill top villages. My maternal grandfather's village, Pettorano sul Gizio (3km south of Sulmona) hasn't changed much in centuries and must look like it did when my grandfather lived there before immigrating to the USA.

My Italian side is from Northern Italy Emilia Romaga region and Sicily. Oddly I felt a connection while playing Assassin's Creed 2 like it oddly felt familiar before discovering Italian ancestry.

@@italianforamericans2416, yes we send things like old letters etc that are written in Italian, to our family in San Zenone, and they always say "we will have to translate that into Venetian". I have never really understood the difference.

Thank you for this informative video! In 1988 and 1989 I spent several weeks in Spoleto (Umbria) as a performer in the Festival dei Due Mondi. My fellow musicians and I loved Spoleto and the other small, ancient towns in Umbria, and on rare occasions we were able to take very short trips when we had a day off. I was able to visit Firenze, Siena, Orvieto, Assisi, Roma, and Venezia. It was a wonderful experience! The food in Umbria is spectacular.

The south as you call it is not really south of anyone until the fake union and forced with what is now Italy was the third richest kingdom in Europe... Until 1860 nobody here ever had to emigrate, then the union came if we want to call it that and here we are, you have to study the real story before you comment.
