The trick is to be gentle with ALL living animals.
Gentle, caring, and incredibly precise.
I imagine it had so much trouble with the prosthetic, not because of its lack of strength, but because the feather was completely different aerodynamically and wasn't able to move in the same way a natural wing would. But it did it! Eventually it learnt to compensate and I think that's incredible.

Well said.
This is a wonderful story about love and respect.
I still remember it like it was yesterday, but it was almost 20 yrs ago now, the day I walked outside my mom's house in N.C. at the time, and a huge monarch butterfly actually landed on my arm, uncurled it's long proboscis & proceeded to give me a bunch of "butterfly kisses" all over my skin. My mom said it was probably because of the cocobutter I would also use after a shower, but I didn't care why, I just thought it was the coolest thing ever! It had never happened to me before, and hasn't happened since, but I would definitely welcome it again! It makes you feel kinda special to know a butterfly picked you to be their "flower"! Some folks are touched by an angel, but I was kissed by a butterfly!
It may have been sipping the mineral salts from your skin... our pores sweat it out. That's what butterflies are doing when you see them on wet dirt near puddles... they actually call it "puddling." How lucky you were to experience that! 😍
There is a special place in heaven for this kind heart.

Amazing. With the time this must have taken, this Monarch had to have been a last generation, the ones that migrate and can live up to 9 months. This past summer I had one that would visit my hummingbird feeders, all throughout the day. He'd land on me from time to time, sit there flexing his wings. Now he's gone, headed south. I miss him already.

It's such a cute tattoo, too!!
Exactly
So very Kind ❤️❤️
If only people cares this much about babies in the womb
i don't think so
I bet the stem of the feather made the right side of the wing much heavier than the left. He was probably trying to adjust flying with more weight on one side rather than being symmetrically balanced. I’m glad he was able to master flight again in the end.
Exactly what I was thinking, there is going to be a weight difference. Just shows you how much any life form fights to keep going and overcome obstacles. Bless this woman for giving the butterfly a second chance.
Ooooo what if she found a dead butterfly, and took it's wing
@@polloduh that's what someone did in another youtube video
She did clip the stem off, it was just the weight of the feather. A butterfly's wing is a lot lighter than that and the poor guy drowned in that weight and kept tipping over in the beginning.
@@polloduh Good idea. But I think the wing of a dead butterfly would be dried out, fragile, and brittle. Likely easy to break. Similar to how leaves that fall from a tree eventually become dry and crunchy 🍂. Water (hydration) is the stuff of life💧.

Seriously. Amazing. These are the Monarchs that fly every year down to Mexico from Canada for the winter and breeding and the young come up here every spring. Their numbers are dwindling sharply . If you see milkweed in your garden...leave it that's the only thing they eat and with increased urbanization their food sources are dying out and they are too. This year I only saw one in the garden. Monarch butterflies lifespans vary from each generation, the longest generations lifespan being 8-9 months. So if we’re lucky he’ll be around for that long or maybe even a little longer :)
Oh wow I thought it was much shorter
Not for this one, I don't expect him to last long. As a butterfly rearer, I would have humanely euthanised this one, because that deformity looks like Ophryocystis elektroscirrha. OE is a protozoan infection that causes weakness and deformity in step with protozoal load.
The problem with wing replacing and releasing this butterfly is that it will now spread OE over caterpillar food sources and cause even worse load in them, or introduce OE to areas where it didn't exist before. Really sad, but releasing him was not the right decision for the local population.
@@LevadeNZ I’m curious, how does one humanely euthanize a butterfly?

Made me remember a butterfly we found literally attached to our kitchen door last February. It's been really a strange thing because in nearly 40 years I've never seen butterflies around during the winter season, in the very coldest days. My mom tried to make her fly away but next time she would open the door, the butterfly was still there.
During one of these times, the green lady came inside and flew in the living room, where there's a wood stove. She clung to the curtain and stayed there for all the rest of the evening. When it was time to go to bed, we tried to make her go out, in vain. She wanted to stay in the warm!! So we left her some water with sugar and went away. The next morning my dad found her on a piece of apple skin.
She stayed with us four more days and then flew away. Having a pet butterfly has been a wonderful experience, actually taught me to open doors with gentle movements!
The amount of patience that took is awe inspiring. Respect.
She prob kept the room super cold to calm the but down also

There‘s a video on UA-cam, of a butterfly playing with a dog. Keep on landing on his nose. The dog played along catching. Butterfly seemed to enjoy the game. Incredible.
How can this video be sad and happy in the same time
As extraordinary as the woman being prepared - and able - to repair a butterfly wing with a prosthetic was the fact that the butterfly learned to fly with it. Although feathers and butterfly scales are both made of chitin (the same as our fingernails), butterfly wings are way thinner, and the scales can be accidentally rubbed off by handling, sufficiently to impair flying. The prosthetic wing must have been considerably heavier (in relative terms) and thus the insect would have had to completely relearn how to fly - something that was instinctive - with this new imbalance.
In addition, the forewing, like all the wings, has a network of microscopic veins fed through a single vein where the wing attaches. These were obviously severed, so the butterfly also has to learn how to flap that one forewing minus the control and sensory feedback that would have allowed it to fly.
That a butterfly even has that capability for such rehabilitation is qute astonishing to me.

Thank you for sharing that info
I wish she had indicated what medium she used to attach the feather. If anyone noticed can you post here? I was thinking of one of those 'gossamer' tea bags (cut into the appropriate shape) would be a possibility, too.
not really, but ok
For the short-life of that one-single butterfly, she did a wonderful job. She made the world a little bit better. If only, all people are like her.
*better
@@aaliafathima9847 thank you! :)
Same people with this same speach be like "of course it's okay to kill an unborn baby!"
@@hanielm.7802 A pile of cells is not a "baby" but nice try
😭 Knowing me, I would try as hard as I could to do the same thing in a similar situation, but my dexterity is so poor that I’d probably cause *more* damage 😔
of all the dodo videos ive binge-watched like forever, this one got me to tears. butterflies have a short lifespan and yet she still made it's life better after it's failed wings ❤️
How’d she attach the wing so permanently? Like did she sew it on? I’m so curious how it’s staying attached so well lol amazing
i was thinking this too. i’d be worried it would fall of
Non toxic glue or something
@@maxwellwilson3871 lol but how the hell do you hold a butterfly down and glue a wing on? Butterfly anesthesia?
Even knowing butterfly lifespans are short, she still helped it get better. Man, I feel like I need to learn from her
The whole world needs to learn from this lady !
Devote your time to mammals and above.
@@nikkingman why not just all animals? They exist and well if they aren't harmful it's mildly understandable to help them, unless they have the life span of a day.
Even a day is a blessing for butterflies.

What about 🐔 or 🐐??
They don't deserve २ live right???
That woman is an absolute genius. She invented a prosthetic wing for a butterfly, of all creatures! Never would've thought of that!
What a wonderful person.
@@annette5653 I couldn't agree with you more on that. Butterflies are such delicate and frail creatures, and nobody knows how long they'll live. But people like that woman must truly be wonderful if they take the time and risk to rehabilitate butterflies, which some people are afraid of (for some strange reason).
What a beautiful Soul you are for saving him. When he came back to see you, I cried. He was saying Thank You for saving him 🦋
WOW, that has to be one of those most amazing things I have ever seen! I can't believe not only was she gentle and skilled enough to fix a BUTTERFLY'S wing, but that it actually worked! She saved him and at least gave him a good quality of life.
Oh boy and now I'm crying. The world really is full of little miracles. I'm so thankful she rescued him and gave him a chance at life.
if only people cared this much about babies in the womb
@@mooneymakes359 If only people cared this much about children in the system 🥺

well stated! There is still hope in this world!!!!!!
Butterfly's life is so short. Normal people would have thought, why bother when he is just gonna live for some days. But angels like U, who know the value of life even for days, exists ❤️. I'm glad he found you😇👼
Monarch butterflies live the longest they live 12 months
Me too!!
@@theoneandonlypinkypinky8245 there's also the ones BEFORE breeding season start living only 1/3 of their lifespan.
Perhaps to a butterfly a day seems like ten years. Maybe even a butterfly sitting on a flower with the sun shining on its wings can feel joyful in it's tiny heart.
This should be made into a children’s book! I loved it. I almost cried near the end, when Monarch butterfly takes off and then the lady’s comment and her tattoo. Brilliant! Thank you for sharing this story. It felt like a story from a children’s book.
Actually you never gave up. The hope you instilled in him is all that mattered. Thanks.
Man...I am tearing up. This woman is pure gold. And the bionic butterfly is beyond amazing. God bless them both!
❤❤
I thought somebody was cutting onions in here. :)
Yeah I was blaming my cat 🐱 lol
I love how she would always know it's him coz no other butterfly will ever have a feather for a wing.
Edit: guys I'm not stupid, Its not like I think this butterfly is gonna be Immortal 🙄 I just meant whenever the butterfly comes to her house for however long it's alive.
Wow...
@@heylol3335 yes?
So sad though butterflies have a short live snap though 😭
@@thetacoguyy actually monarch butterflies live up to 2 months, but depending on the generation and other factors they can live up to 9 months and even to a year, so its not that short
@@youwontrememberme yeah
Besides they helped them fly and maybe even their dna carried on

It made me choke what she said in the end - it maybe short and fleeting but in the grand scheme of things all of our lives are just a short blip here on Earth.
Apart from the love she has shown to this little butterfly her Message of, "Never Give Up" should be a boost for all of us. What a beautiful thing she did. 👍🎸🙏💜
Exactly! 👏 👍🦋
That is what “a heart of gold” means. Also, it was super adorable when they were “training” a butterfly 🥰
It made me giggle to be honest.
I used to be such an a*shole when I was a teen basically a swarm of butterflies flew near my home and I killed a lot of em I'm soooo not proud of what I did I was such a bad person I hope nobody does that
🦋how magnificent it is to live in a time where this precious story can be documented, and rewatched for inspiration, Thank you for being so kind 🦋
That butterfly is better tamed than my parakeets 😆 how kind of you to fix that little butterflies wing! Reminded me of toothless from How to Train your Dragon
This is awesome evidence to show learning in insects. He was clearly learning through trial and error how to fly with his prosthetic wing, and altering his style to try new techniques. This requires complex thought and memory. He could not figure out how to do this through "pre-preprogrammed" instinct as he had to figure out a new technique with which he could fly with as prosthetic. So cool that this process was documented, would love to see research on insect learning observing similar things.
@@donnykiles9522 To be fair no animal can drive a car its a lot more difficultly than to fly.
Agreed and I wonder if the butterfly understood/remembered that a human helped add a new wing?
but this research would require harming insects ....

"He never gave up..." And neither did his awesome mom:)
That butterfly was able to live longer because of this woman. For an insect to remember her kindness is really extraordinary.
It’s so cool seeing people helping insects and animals✨🙂
She never gave up either. Lovely story. Faith restored indeed.
Agree wholeheartedly. 💕
