I imagine it had so much trouble with the prosthetic, not because of its lack of strength, but because the feather was completely different aerodynamically and wasn't able to move in the same way a natural wing would. But it did it! Eventually it learnt to compensate and I think that's incredible.

the Kingdom of GOD is coming…“Silver is for the kettle, and gold for the furnace, but The LORD is the tester of hearts- Bible” your heart is like discovered silver, dirty and not pure, when silver is purified it is melted over and over, to the point that when it’s melted and glows red hot, it is pure enough to see your own reflection in the puddle, so also does the LORD purify your heart, till HE can see HIS own reflection in it, seek the LORD and be reborn, ask The LORD to renew and restore you, repent and ask The LORD for HIS Salvation for those who seek will find and those who knock the door will be open unto them, no man is good, all are in need of salvation, Jesus died so that our sins will be wiped away and so that we could be made new, seek The Kingdom of GOD for if you would be wise you would be wise for yourself, pick up your cross and deny your flesh and follow the path of GOD, for The Kingdom of GOD is at hand, in JESUS MIGHTY NAME Amen and Amen

I still remember it like it was yesterday, but it was almost 20 yrs ago now, the day I walked outside my mom's house in N.C. at the time, and a huge monarch butterfly actually landed on my arm, uncurled it's long proboscis & proceeded to give me a bunch of "butterfly kisses" all over my skin. My mom said it was probably because of the cocobutter I would also use after a shower, but I didn't care why, I just thought it was the coolest thing ever! It had never happened to me before, and hasn't happened since, but I would definitely welcome it again! It makes you feel kinda special to know a butterfly picked you to be their "flower"! Some folks are touched by an angel, but I was kissed by a butterfly!

Their numbers are dwindling sharply . If you see milkweed in your garden...leave it that's the only thing they eat and with increased urbanization their food sources are dying out and they are too. This year I only saw one in the garden. Even 20 years ago we'd see at least 4-5. And growing up there were monarch butterflies almost all late summer.

Not for this one, I don't expect him to last long. As a butterfly rearer, I would have humanely euthanised this one, because that deformity looks like Ophryocystis elektroscirrha. OE is a protozoan infection that causes weakness and deformity in step with protozoal load.
The problem with wing replacing and releasing this butterfly is that it will now spread OE over caterpillar food sources and cause even worse load in them, or introduce OE to areas where it didn't exist before. Really sad, but releasing him was not the right decision for the local population.

The feather was heavier but the poor thing managed to get it right! It's amazing.
Made me remember a butterfly we found literally attached to our kitchen door last February. It's been really a strange thing because in nearly 40 years I've never seen butterflies around during the winter season, in the very coldest days. My mom tried to make her fly away but next time she would open the door, the butterfly was still there.
During one of these times, the green lady came inside and flew in the living room, where there's a wood stove. She clung to the curtain and stayed there for all the rest of the evening. When it was time to go to bed, we tried to make her go out, in vain. She wanted to stay in the warm!! So we left her some water with sugar and went away. The next morning my dad found her on a piece of apple skin.
She stayed with us four more days and then flew away. Having a pet butterfly has been a wonderful experience, actually taught me to open doors with gentle movements!

Something you've likely never seen before, and probably will never see again, and the events leading up to it, unless you by chance stumble across this video, are a complete mystery, even if you know there has to be a story there. To you, it's just a little miracle, a little blip of an event with an unknowable cause rooted in the deep interconnectedness of life. As extraordinary as the woman being prepared - and able - to repair a butterfly wing with a prosthetic was the fact that the butterfly learned to fly with it. Although feathers and butterfly scales are both made of chitin (the same as our fingernails), butterfly wings are way thinner, and the scales can be accidentally rubbed off by handling, sufficiently to impair flying. The prosthetic wing must have been considerably heavier (in relative terms) and thus the insect would have had to completely relearn how to fly - something that was instinctive - with this new imbalance.
In addition, the forewing, like all the wings, has a network of microscopic veins fed through a single vein where the wing attaches. These were obviously severed, so the butterfly also has to learn how to flap that one forewing minus the control and sensory feedback that would have allowed it to fly.
That a butterfly even has that capability for such rehabilitation is qute astonishing to me.

This is awesome evidence to show learning in insects. He was clearly learning through trial and error how to fly with his prosthetic wing, and altering his style to try new techniques. This requires complex thought and memory. He could not figure out how to do this through "pre-preprogrammed" instinct as he had to figure out a new technique with which he could fly with as prosthetic. So cool that this process was documented, would love to see research on insect learning observing similar things.
