I have a squirrel friend I have named Mary Lou. She follows me around the yard while I am working in the garden or whatever. I carry food with me and she knows it so I feed her almost daily. I Do believe Charlie understands her words and has hurt feelings over his human interacting with another chipmunk that would take over "his" territory. Years ago I saw a story on PBS about a study of squirrels. They were trying to build a squirrel proof bird feeder. The students installed buttons and various deterrents for them and they'd daily change how many times they had to push each button, go in and out of things, and daily by day's end, the squirrels would have the codes figured out. People think little animals aren't smart, but humans are just not paying attention. 💘
@@TheGamer.4310 I just Googled that. It seems I'm subscribed to Mark's channel, so I must have seen something on his channel. His configuration does put me in mind of the "squirrel proof" contraption from years ago- certainly long enough ago that Mark wasn't even born. The course that the PBS squirrels went through had buttons they had to push in sequence to open the next part of the course to them. They would have to press 3- 2-5 one day and the next day it would change to some other sequence, and there were several. There were gymnastic feats also, like Mark's, and the squirrels would have it all down pat every day!😆😀
This relationship you have with Charlie goes beyond words. I have no idea how you communicate together but it’s very clear that he not only “gets” you but understands you and vice versa. Indeed your friendship is very special and I hope you both have many years to share it together!
Lol, she hasn’t trained Charlie- Charlie has trained her! The cold shoulder and silent treatment is textbook- Charlie is a sophisticated man of the world.
I had a chipmunk or Squirrel as its called here, as a pet, To my surprise they are extremely intelligent creatures. I actually found them to be more intelligent than dogs .. He could respond to calls. He could recognize my voice while i left him on the tree in my yard. He would comeback and hide in some old pipes outside my door and give a loud cry to open the door if my door was closed.. and as soon as i opened the door he would rush like Flash.. He used to be afraid of dogs.. He was one day killed by a dog.. He had come home and slept in his box and breathed his last.. could see bite marks on him 😥😥😥
Idk about the smile, but the "freeze!" Trick seems to be she says it while holding up another equivalent nut to the one he's munching on. Maybe she eventually got him to associate that word with being motionless and then being rewarded with peanuts--hence how she could tell him freeze and he’d stop without a peanut already in his mouth. This is just my theory from watching the video, but it is amazing regardless of her actual method!
I hate to be pessimistic but it kind of sounds like those commands were recorded and patched in after, to match what he was doing. I don't believe that a chipmunk can understand commands in this manner. The freeze seemed to be based on the second peanut rather than the word.

I have the same feeling toward a sickly stray cat I took in. Shortly after his arrival I took him to the vet. It was during that trip that I discovered his love for car rides. So the next day I took him for a little drive around my neighborhood through a maze of various scenic streets. The whole time he stood up in the seat next to me staring intently out of the passenger window. Initially I thought nothing of it. Even though he looked out intently, at the time I had no idea how intently. A few days later I took him for another ride on almost the same route. The difference this second time was the last turn. Instead of turning right to go home, I continued straight to go to the gas station. When I missed that last turn to go home he frantically meowed at me then strained to look back at the road I should have turned on. After just one ride with many turns, he was able to memorize the precise route we took. One of the most stunning things I have witnessed from an animal. This emaciated,…almost near death cat (according to the vet) was telling me I missed the turn. And nearly 9 years later, rarely does a week go by where he doesn’t impress me with his human-like awareness.

This woman is patient and caring. The animal has no idea what freeze means, he just knows this is what he needs to do to get more free food and safety (less stress). Bears, dogs, hedgehogs, humans, birds, cats, etc. all know how to (ab)use this.

When I was about 5 years old, there was a squirrel that would come into our kitchen and sit on my shoulder while I sat on the floor. I would feed him peanuts, and he was my little buddy. He wouldn't do that for anyone else. I thought no one would believe me but i actually found a couple photos after my mum passed away, showing him coming in and running up my arm in the kitchen. I'm now 67 and I still cherish that little relationship.
I have a squirrel friend I have named Mary Lou. She follows me around the yard while I am working in the garden or whatever. I carry food with me and she knows it so I feed her almost daily. ....And it's a complete fake. The audio was obviously overdubbed after the footage was assembled. Squirrels and chipmunks have something called freezing behavior, which is their first response to a flight-or-fight decision. They can't help it. It has nothing to do with her command to do so. "Charlie, come" is easily dubbed, so is "high five" and the whole "smiley face" is dubbed after Charlie tried to stuff the whole thing in his mouth, which is what they do when they are getting ready to transport food.
