@@vizefusion4895 I agree completely. It would teach a much better lesson if they just got her proper debt counselling, got her on a fixed repayment scheme and taught her how to cook on a budget. The food she's cooking "cheaply" is unnutrious garbage when she could be eating much more healthily.. especially given she could stand to lose a few pounds herself. I would have loved it if they had discussed the long-term financial consequences of selling the house. It's not obvious to me that selling the house and then renting it back is a good financial decision. The 25k wouldn't even clear her whole debt under normal circumstances. And how much is the rent going to be compared to the mortgage? This seems really dumb.

He's using basic behavioural therapy where he doesn't respond with any favourable facial expressions or tone that she could misperceive as a cue that he's willing to be taken for a ride.

A strategy like that, all expenses to zero, doesn't work, people can manage that for a month, then they look ahead, realise they still have 5 years or something left, despair and go on a spending binge ruining their progress and more. It's the same with obese people trying one of those extreme diets where you literally eat almost nothing, they manage for a while, then relapse and end up fatter than ever.
What these people, both obese and indebted people, need is a long term lifestyle change, and the only way for most people is to ease their way into it, going in too strong kills motivation quickly
Also she isn't going to be earning 800£ for the rest of her life, if she increases her earnings to 2000£ but keeps the 800£ budget she will pay off the debt quickly
