  • It's October which means it's time to start getting bulbs in the ground starting with my freesia which don't mind the soil still being a little warm. I am planting singles, doubles and a couple of fancy colours plus doing an experiment to see which grow better; new bulbs or the few I managed to save from last year.
I'm Pheigi at From The Witch's Garden, a Scottish girl trying to grow cut flowers on my allotment in Kanagawa prefecture in Japan. Remember to subscribe if you want to follow along and see if we actually get any flowers at the end of the season or if it is all a crispy burnt mess.
If you want to see what I do with the flowers I grow check out ‪@fromthewitchsgarden‬ on instagram.

Hi Pheigi...Here where I live mosquitoes are a menace almost year round too. I'm glad you have a positive outlook, I would be sad for only 3-5 bulbs. In the US we are so spoiled. Could you gather pine needles from parks to use as a mulch/ground cover? I don't know if it would be helpful for water retention or just a shady sanctuary for ravenous beetles tho... =)
    I'm certain you've considered this...Take care!

Seriously with the mozzies and the beetle my garden and I are constantly in a half eaten state. I think I ended up with about 15 freesia bulbs plus the wee ones but I’m hoping that as I am leaving them in the soil this year I will have more come back in 2025…I’m not really known for my patience though…

3-5 bulbs in a bag is infuriating. 2 daffodil bulbs for about $8 just makes me cry.

They're a bit of a forgotten flower - thanks for this. I might plant some myself 🎉

They definitely don’t get the love they deserve. They smell amazing and have such a good vase life. I guess the colours don’t necessarily match more modern palettes which love soft peach tones and they are on the short side for a cut flower so maybe aren’t overly useful to florists which is maybe why they are overlooked but I love them.
