After seeing this, I checked out the whole podcast episode. Excellent work, you really got Michael Emerson to go into places I didn't expect him to in an interview. I found what he said about his father's passing and the play he did around that time really touching. I believe the show he did that caused him to set aside dealing with the grief was Person of Interest, and it just feels terrible that the character he played in POI lost his father to Alzheimer's. I kind of have a crush on Michael Emerson. Smart, insightful, nerdy actor? Yes please. Also he's just such a great character actor and he should read Dagoth Ur's lines b/c Michael Kirkbride.
I fell I love with Ben long before it was clear he was being played by the man in black. He like many on the island lived by eko's final confession; "I did not ask for the life that I was given, but it was given nonetheless and with it I did my best". Ben is a gravely mistreated & misunderstood character which makes him relatable & loveable
Michael Emerson was to Lost like Eli Wallach was to The good the bad and the ugly. Only the highest caliber of actor can play such a complicated and multi faceted character.
The character of Ben was the first time I had seen Michael act. I absolutely loathe that character. However, the sign of a great actor, 4 me at least, is when the actor can make u feel sorry for him, when he’s being harmed, when 4 months u wanted 2 strangle him. Michael did this for me when he played Ben. So much so, I was so excited to c that he was back on tv w/ playing another character on “Person of Interest”. I absolutely LOVED that show bc of of Michael & Jim, 2 extremely talented actors.
I bet we will see a reimagined version someday. Shows like battlestar galactica have a certain time cycle, even if its 20-30 years. The stories were SO compelling. They will love seeing current or undiscovered actors in these parts, even if its hard to imagine now. Theres Hurley's time as island protector. Theres an endless need for new protectors and candidates. Any protector gets tired of being immortal after 2000 years. It was an honor and a privilege to watch this amazing show. There were stories like Eko & Walt that were changed due to circumstances with the actors that can still be explored too. If the creators are still around, they can still be consulted an interviewed, and may have new ideas. Im still sad sun, jin, sayid, and jack had to die, but happy endings are not in vogue anymore.
I sure hope there's never a spin off of Lost. The show ended and it ended well. The story is finished. No need to ruin a great story with a pointless continuation of something that's already ended. I'm pretty sure the writers are smart enough to know this though and will never do it.
Agreed, but I’d have said the same thing about Watchmen and that was fabulous. Granted, that means there’s only one person who can pull it off... Damon Lindeloff!
@Cillian Murphy it would need to be a reboot. We already know the island and it's secrets and that's part of what captivated us so much and kept us glued to our seats. A sequel with the same island wouldn't be as special since we know what happened and who resided there.
Having researched recently I think the only way it could be done is with the kids, next generation style. There was never a satisfying payoff for all the intrigue around Aaron especially.
Ah, I'd also love to have Terry O'Quinn on my show. Must've been interesting to sit next to him. He's in this season of FBI: Most Wanted, but it's a small part. We need more of him on TV, imho!
@@ReallyFamous He wasn’t interested in conversation, & I had just left Albuquerque, where I had been taking care of my cousin with stage 4 breast cancer. Husband and I just finished watching Lost last night. Neither of us had watched it when it originally aired. I was Hooked by the first episode, and so did my husband who hates all Series. I loved the ending. "Ben" got beat up so many times! More than any character? While he didn't go into the Church at the end, he had "some things to work out", and that was appropriate, in my opinion. Michael, I loved you in Person of Interest. It was a series that wasn't given the recognition it deserved and why Taraji P. Henson doesn't seem to be mentioned (in interviews and articles) for her role it it. Sad. Thanks for this video.
Why did we like ben? The answer is simple. Because Michael is Ben by default! Listen to his answers! He didn't need a script to be ben linus! Such a great actor ❤️
I still laugh at how, during the final season, the folks who had been on the island became aware of their time on the island when they experienced some kind of "love connection", but for Ben Linus, it happened when he was getting the tar beat out of him!
Its nice of him to characterize his offhand mention that Benjamin was the leader of the Others as something the writers were planning from the start. They clearly just took his suggestion and ran with it because, with the benefit of hindsight, they had no idea where they were going. They owe him a writing credit.
13:55 I love that so much lol. Exactly how I feel lol I think people who hate lost hated it for not understanding it and that can be fixed by explaining not just the show to them but the philosophy that drives the show. Their minds could be changed. But I agree it would take a little bit of time. Best summery I’ve seen is 5 and a half hours long. Lol But it’s not the worst way to waste your time. The enrichment Lost can bring to you when you get what it’s going for and accept/appreciate it for what it is, that’s worth the time and effort.
There was nothing wrong with the ending of Lost. Certainly nothing that made watching six seasons a waste of time. The writing was brilliant, and fans really love these characters more than should be possible for a TV show. The connections, the set-ups and pay-offs between characters and episodes and seasons are such a rich, intricate tapestry, you could spend two decades unraveling it all. Lost is one of the greatest television shows ever made. A perfect storm of talented artists. The most beautiful soundtrack ever put to a series. Flawed, for sure, but lightning in a bottle.
I like your analysis, Leon. I simply loved Lost at the time. I'm ok with the ending. I do wish certain questions were answered and I do wish the sci-fi elements were toned down (personal preference), but it was undoubtedly a stellar show. Loved it!
I just thought he was a really interesting character from hearing he was born well been on the island since a child, made me wonder what he must have seen and known. Plus he was very intelligent or seemed to be.
Obviously, any given viewer is completely allowed to dislike something they watch, including the ending of a major TV show. Having said that, in all my experience within the fan community over the years, well over 50% of those people who "hated" the LOST ending (particularly in a visceral way), when I hear their explanation why, that opinion is born out of objectively incorrect information. Something they've come to believe that is simply factually wrong. The show actually answered a huge majority of the "mysteries", there's plenty they quite literally spell out to the audience (even perhaps to the detriment of serving its dramatic purpose). You can not like WHAT the answer to something was, but to say it wasn't given at all is just not true. And yeah, a good bit of those answers still took lots of contemplation on the audience's part, but I'm a friggin idiot, if I understood it, trust me anyone could lol
First time watching one of your videos, great interview! Very enjoyable, fun listen Came here for Ben Linus, but you Kara, took all my attention! Wow, you're so beautiful. You are a real catch 🙂
Michael Emerson, as first Henry Gale, then Benjamin Linus in my opinion was the best actor on Lost. had Anthony Hopkins not been able to play the role of Hannibal Lechter, Michael could have. Lost is my all time favorite. i found it to be the perfect combination of ALL genres. sci-fi, drama, romance, and even some comedic moments. as a fan, if i was to see any of the cast members out in public nothing would thrill me more than to talk to them. but i'd be hesitant to approach them for the following reasons. maybe they don't wanna be bothered, and if i approached them they could be offended by the invasion of privacy and i can respect that. to say something Ben Linus might say, i'd want them to want to talk to me. also, and this might seem extreme, i've heard many stories where big name actors that played characters that were supposed to be nice, when approached by fans were anything BUT nice. in fact sometimes downright abusive. if this were to happen it would ruin my whole perception of them and the show. So, at the end of the day, unless they initiated contact with me, as hard as it may be I'd be inclined to acknowledge them then just leave them alone. at the very least i could tell my friends and family hey i got to see that person in real life and in my opinion that's a win in and of itself
I’m happy to say I can vouch for Michael in real life. He’s one of the nicest, most thoughtful people. A little reserved, maybe - so I’m not sure how he feels about being approached on the street - but something tells me he’d be very gracious and wouldn’t disappoint.
@@ReallyFamous wel miss kara, i live in a small ohio town, i dont get out much and have no idea where id run into the guy or any other cast member lol. but i can honestly say i did see in person a temporary cast member in person. it was actor clancy brown who played calvin of the hatch. i was a background person in the shawshank redemption and he was the head guard
He felt guilty 'bout everything he had done, I mean, he killed his own father...got his own daughter killed (unintentionally), he killed John Locke, ALL the Dharma people. among other awful things... After everyone was gone from the island, he presumably spent a lot of years with Hurley doing good on the island and making up for what he had done, but in The End, he still felt guilty...
He is enchainting, at first he was so miserable and sad and i felt sorry for him, aftrr that we didnt know if we could trust him, and he was mystetious and it was attracting attention, then when we discovered we got decieved it was mind boggling, then we discovrred how smart he is and it was charisma attracting
Whatever show he and Terry O'Quinn were cooking up, I would've watched the hell out of that! They are two of the finest (largely) unsung character actors of their generation - if they had a chance to team up again after Lost, why did ABC not write them a blank check?
He was off the island tho, I think its like a Neverland thing, dont age on the island, but whatever that "magic" is, doesn't carry over when you leave, its not in you, its in the Island. Now that I think of it... The Island... and Neverland... hm.... lol
@@captahab6370 except Sawyer jokes about how tall he is, before he is ever taken off the island. That may be why they had to remove him from the show, they couldn't show him staying the same age, but it is acknowledged in show that he grows on the island. Because he is not brought back once he leaves, until after the show is over.

Such a damned good actor.
Favorite show ever!❤️
"She means nothing to m--" BANG! (Commercial break.) I think I'm still traumatized by that.
Thanks everyone, for tuning in! Comment with your favorite #Lost character below!
he nailed it tbh
Michael Emerson is so cool!
We loved him, yet we loved Ben getting the crap beat out of him too. Strange! I feel it was a dark in-joke with the writers!!
extraordinary actor. any scene with him in it was intense and memorable
Unforgettable character. Rich and immersive.
I love his pitch for his show with Terry, sounds like a US version of Bottom
I know, right?!? I would LOVE to see that show.
My name is Henry Gale from Minnesota !
@Cillian Murphy me too!
Any kind of spin off would ruin the perfection of lost
I sat next to Terry O’Quinn on a plane. More handsome in person. Obviously, weary of being approached. He reminded me that he had done more than Lost.
I told him that I loved his portrayal of John Locke. We were stuck together in 1st class for 2 hours. He wasn’t very friendly, & I couldn’t stop crying. He was over me. Still, a pretty cool encounter.
And a story for the rest of your life. [Sorry to hear about your cousin.]
Great interview. I would love to see some actors from Lost together for an interview !
I love that idea. Glad you enjoyed our talk!
We need a new reunion!
Almost 20 years. Definitely!
Michael is such a delight
Why did we like ben? The answer is simple. Because Michael is Ben by default! Listen to his answers! He didn't need a script to be ben linus! Such a great actor ❤️
I still laugh at how, during the final season, the folks who had been on the island became aware of their time on the island when they experienced some kind of "love connection", but for Ben Linus, it happened when he was getting the tar beat out of him!
I love the way he talks
Its nice of him to characterize his offhand mention that Benjamin was the leader of the Others as something the writers were planning from the start. They clearly just took his suggestion and ran with it because, with the benefit of hindsight, they had no idea where they were going. They owe him a writing credit.
I dunno it was pretty clear what their intentions were with him getting captured. He just didn't know yet.
13:55 I love that so much lol.
Exactly how I feel lol
I think people who hate lost hated it for not understanding it and that can be fixed by explaining not just the show to them but the philosophy that drives the show. Their minds could be changed.
But I agree it would take a little bit of time.
Best summery I’ve seen is 5 and a half hours long. Lol
But it’s not the worst way to waste your time.
The enrichment Lost can bring to you when you get what it’s going for and accept/appreciate it for what it is, that’s worth the time and effort.
You could be any of the characters that you played so darn well Michael. To me you'd be Zep.
phenomenal actor
Name a more iconic duo than Ben Linus and 🥊
There was nothing wrong with the ending of Lost.
I believe his stage acting made him the best actor!
“Can I get ya some lemonade” 😂😂😭
Very enjoyable, fun listen
Came here for Ben Linus, but you Kara, took all my attention! Wow, you're so beautiful. You are a real catch 🙂
Hey thanks, Charlie. Glad you’re enjoying the show! And Michael Emerson is so great - one of my favorite actors and guests 👍🏻
Fans grew to like Ben because Michael nailed the part.
@@ReallyFamous it's very refreshing to hear that. not that id ever get the chance to meet the guy but now i'm not so scared lol
@@kennethrisner8648 you never know 😅
@@ReallyFamous wel miss kara, i live in a small ohio town, i dont get out much and have no idea where id run into the guy or any other cast member lol. but i can honestly say i did see in person a temporary cast member in person. it was actor clancy brown who played calvin of the hatch. i was a background person in the shawshank redemption and he was the head guard
Ben was one of my favorites. Juliette was the other.
What an intelligent an thoughtful man. The question I have is why Ben didn't join the others in the Chapel in the finale.
I think maybe is waiting for Alex..
I hope Michael and Terry will do the lazy old conmen series still. I would watch it.
I remember when they leaked his Hurley audition 😂
Whatever show he and Terry O'Quinn were cooking up, I would've watched the hell out of that! They are two of the finest (largely) unsung character actors of their generation - if they had a chance to team up again after Lost, why did ABC not write them a blank check?
omg Ben is alive!
Did you see ANYONE age on the Island? WALT!!!!!
Alpert gets a grey hair, does that count?
@@LilyUnsub Richard gets grey hair bc Jacob dies I thinks and being touched by Jacob is what made him immortal. So it’s like his tie to immortality faded
great actor.
Some say Michael Emerson has a resemblance to the late countertenor Klaus Nomi, if y'all know who he was. What do you think? Anybody?
