oh man calling Luke Slick, Linus should start calling him slick again on the WAN show
am I allowed to feel a sense of nostalgia watching these old videos?
they where so young and untethered....and luke was slick
sweet memories :D
The fact that Linus is able to get the hookup with local emergency services to test equipment like this speaks volumes with how far his channel has come. Keep up the great work, Linus!
I'm going to guess a relation of Luke's judging the name on the fire officers helmet.
@HA05GER at 3:13 you see the back of the helmet it might be one of lukes cousins or something at 7:16 also
that fan did a really bad job at cooling if the nas got to 900°C
I think they said 900°C and 800 to 900°F
900°C ... and afterwards Linus said 1000+°F... I still don't get why only the US uses the Fahrenheit scale... If you wanna be special at least use Kelvin... try the metric system...
canada uses both, which doesn't help
James Mastroianni it melted...
mikos321 we only use Celsius, don't know what you're talking about
They wouldn't notice that the drive's been in a fire for 25 minutes huh.... Guess we'll sell it on ebay then as barely used
Lets make it a full 24 hours then. and see if it can survive.
I was like, "only 900 degrees?"and then he said Celsius and I was impressed.
Then later he said Fahrenheit again and you got really confused... xD
they're in Canada so no worries.
900 degrees not celsius is very hot for a house fire. ite44 i dout they were planning to land it on the sun.
ite144 ok
@@Z3Cubing I didn't get confused. I'm deaf, so I read the guy's lips beginning to say "no, Fahrenheit" even though the sound on him had already moved on
Fahrenheit or Celsius? You changed units in the middle Linus...lol
Obviously Fahrenheit, it can't be almost the same temperature as the sun lol.
***** Well...
That's only the surface.
Blade Mastr the same temperature as the sun? really?
Johandyman Not quite but really dude that's pretty damn hot for a normal flame.
Blade Mastr regular flashover in a normal housefire happens at 600-700 degrees celsius - i doubt they came close when it was in an open room
Great video, would have loved to see what would happen if that thing was running while that fire raged next to it.
Would love to see more stress test videos from you guys, whether it be more fireproof NAS enclosures or even the phone cases you guys tested before.
Remembre when Luke was Slick?
Yes
+Ivan Crespo Gomez I do remembre. I remembre very well.
***** Remembre, remembre, the 5th of Novembre, the gumpowder, treason and plot. I see no reason fro the gumpowder treason should ever be frogot.
Edzel was Diesel and Brandon was B-roll.
Them nicknames son.
Did anybody else notice that the firefighter Richard is called Lafreniere, just like Luke/Slick?
You can see it at 9:12
I see lots conversion from Fahrenheit to Celsius in the comments, but Linus clearly says a couple time 800-900 Celsius.
And if you look up the average temperature of a home fire, that's about what you get.
Oh, that's 1400-1600 Fahrenheit if you were wondering.
Here from the future, 2020.
Just watched the video about using the automotive ceramic coating on your phone!
Great video, but this is a great comparison to videos now. Your quality has improved 100x. Great job!
is that Lukes brother... on his helmet it said R. Lafreniere
No, Luke, I Am YOUR FATHER
im wondering the same thing
yeah hes been on some wan shows before
You fuck, It's just no, without Luke... get a grip... sheeesh
Ive watched a lot of LTT over the past few weeks and I think this 9 years later being recommended as a video is kinda telling me that I might need to cool off on the pace a bit :D
I like it though its great to see the evolution of LMG and LTT in style and production
That is just amazing! If that NAS could fit 4 or 5 drives, I would get it.
Finally! Now I know where I can store my rare hentai.
Lamarfin perfect
I would have prefered you to have the drive plugged in when you torched it, it would have been good to see if the fan filled it with smoke and if the smoke would have had issues with the drives.
The fan only cools the aluminium enclose of the drives, I believe.
Joel Nilsson Yeah but it's a part of the design so it's not a fully valid test if you don't have the device powered.
Aisha Kegawa Yeah, would have liked to see the same!
yea my drives were fucked when I had a house fire, even though other components like the graphics card actually survived. My pc was plugged in and on (albeit in sleep mode) the whole time too
Funny to only see this video years after being uploaded. Used to work at IO Safe when they were only a startup. The way they go about fireproofing the enclosures is neat and I think has a lot of unexplored DIY use. The fireproofing is just gypsum cured to shape. It would be quite strait forward to fireproof entire computer enclosures using the same materials.
stuff like Kaowool comes to mind, easy to shape and use. Might be worth some testing
@@BeetleBuns Kaowool would likely have some use. Gypsum has the benefit of retaining a lot of water when cured. As a result the internal temperature hardly goes above the water boiling point for quite a while during a burn. As you mention, testing would bear out weak points to be addressed.
Ohh man, what a blast from the past. I had totally forgotten about "Slick", lol.
Right? Crazy how far they came in 6 and a half years. I still have this video liked from when when I originally watched it.
If you mean that you want to build a PC with two SSD's, one for your OS and one for data (games etc), and than you want three WD 2TB drives in a RAID configuration. Yes this is possible, you just need a capable motherboard for RAID 5 support because that is the "only" RAID config for three drives. The only problem is that RAID 5 running of your motherboard is (almost) always very very slow.
We need to see this kind of test again in 2021
I know that this has like nothing to do with the video. But seeing this channel grow over the past like 4 years is really nice. Started watching it when I was like 13? Now being 17 seeing the growth makes me fanboy inside for Linus! Good Job!
Am I the only one that thought Linus looks like an idiot wearing all that safety gear while having that interview lol
That NAS looks so majestic with the piano music and the fire in slow motion.
But will it blend
That is the question.
*blendtec theme starts playing*
not necessarily, just testing each drive individually works
The best burn in test ever.
hes not talking about performance, hes talking about the fact that if they were set up as raid0 then they would be less reliable and therefore would make it a worse case scenario so you would know even if you had the absolute worst possible situation you would still be ok with using one of these.
Is richard related to luke? They have the same last name.
I think so
yep, its luke's brother they did wanshow some time ago.
Can we get an updated LMG video on Fire tech? That seems like it would be a kick butt video.
But can it run crysis?

Love your early reviews, guys. Thorough & chill af. Keep up the great content!
7:14 it says Lafreniere on his helmet. He's related to Slick :p
Cool seeing Slick's bother again. Would be awesome to see him in WAN show again.
Fireproof....?Waterproof...? LAVA!!!
I wanna see them test the lava
Justin Wood Yes,I do too.Although I think I know how it would end,it would still be interesting.
***** How would they get it out!?
that would be the most interesting part of the experiment lmfao
Wittacon have a heatproof chain connected
You should power up the IOsafe while its caching fire and see when short circuit of power wire can effect the device.
i'd suggest to avoid setting your house on fire unless you see a spider
When the relaxing fire scene started to scorch the NAS (7:48) I propped my legs up on the desk, cracked open a beer, & started to think about my life as I continued to watch.
No 210 fps
Omg the slow mo looks sooooo good
Did anyone notice, the fireman's last name is laferniere which is Luke's last name. So that means they're brothers?
look at the top messages people did
Wow just having the "interviews" with the firemen was really cool! Great video Linus Crew!
Wait, that firefighter has the same last name as Luke, are they related?
Single greatest video LMG had ever created
Is Luke's last name common around there? The firefighter had "Lafreniere" written on his helmet :P
that's Luke's brother
that whole time lapse authenticiy was compromised because it changed the view at 14:02
Enhanced Pyrotechnics I noticed that also because the audio had gotten lower for some odd reason.
Enhanced Pyrotechnics Given the fact that Linus has given negative feedback and comments to even the companies that give him keeper units worth thousands to tens of thousands. I can say definitively after being a longtime viewer that there was no trickery. Since he would gladly tell us customers that something didn't work as advertised. Even though that company may be paying his company to review it.
so he said he wouldnt do any cuts so we know he didnt switch the drives but then at 14:28 he cuts away for it to come back fully put together and him saying "NO WAY!!!" also i know we saw him put the drives into the other computer but who says he didnt cut and take them out for new ones
Might be the best video you guys have done so far.
"so we're just going to keep the camera rolling and we're going to time lapse this* be*cause i want you guys to know there's no faking and no switcheroo going on"
*noticable frame stutter and obviously different microphone and camera settings probably just a problem in editing, in intentional in editing as a joke
The slowmo and music was awesome
#Firepole
incredible! i would have never thought it could have survived the fire. regardless of the fact that it is in a firesafe enclosure. yes the drive itself would not get touched by flames. but the drive will still have to endure temperatures that far exceeds the temp range a harddrive can withstand. Ok, so yes the power would get cut off soon after so the drives wont be operating at the time it starts baking... but you have to think about it, it is the equivelant to sticking ur harddrive in the oven for 30 minutes.
what you should have done is put some type of thermometer inside the box to see how hot the inside of the box got at peak temps. i wish u could go back and do this. because i am very curious how hot it got inside the box.
is that Slick's brother?
Man you're a crazy person to test a device's fireproof in 1000C . Good keep it up
in the backgrround are you getting 810 fps in that game?
***** He is looking at the sky... suddenly not as impressive.
the tearing would be unbearable though
well i was playing skyrim and removed my enb cause i was getting heaps of lag and decided to check my frames ain this one spot in a cave i got 1055 frames
March 4, 2020.
Watching this cool video after the ceramic coating protection video.
😊
I thought you had a wireless microphone
Yeah!
Nick Evans You're not going to take a wireless somewhere they can get buttfucked by fire
Celsius or Fahrenheit ? You said both at different times with the same numbers.
Excellent video! Thanks for bringing so much originality to us!
Damn
How much ltt has changed
Kind of funny watching back how WD were "our preferred drives" when now Seagata is the only option they'll consider. Whoever sponsors is the best.
At the beginning, you said 900 C° but in the end, you said 1000 F°. What was is?
good ear. i think linus made a mistake assuming the guy meant 900 C when he meant 900 F. 900 c is insane for wood and hay
Canada goes off Celsius so it's most likely Celsius
Ashton Flint he meant F. not C. linus just automatically jumped to C because hes a computer science guy and a Canadian.
Yeah, confusing...
For an unstoked wood fire, that has to be Fahrenheit. Also, the ioSafe datasheet says it's rated up to 1550F for 30 minutes, which is 843C. So, if the fire went above that temperature, then it wouldn't have been a fair test of the product.
Thanks for helping them do this WD, absolutely awesome!
There are 27 that still think that the best way to keep your data safe is in a floppy disk
Now, this is what I call a thorough review! Keep up the good work you guys.
now place it IN the fire... not outside. in a real-life scenario, the house fire wouldn't attack 1 side of the Case, it would attack the entire case
In a real-life case, this would sit in the "server room" of a small company, surrounded by lots of metal & Server stuff, which wouldn't even burn under normal conditions(I don't think this NAS is intended for "home use"). As the fireman said, I guess this is the absolute worst-case scenario. Think about this: The earth's core is just about 6x hotter than this. Man, this thing is tough...
Maxjoker98 Even if it was in a server room, it would still be surrounded by fire, the fire isnt just going to be excluded from the room, it's going to move inside the room and start to burn everything in it's path
HeyItsMassacre
Yeah, but Metal don't burn. The plastic will burn, and you have to think, in a server room, there will be Fire Sprinklers, so the fire won't get a chance to get out of hand. And most devices these days have protections on them, encase of a fire or short. And server rooms are temperature controlled, the room needs to be very cool at all times to keep the servers nice and cool.
sprinklers or not, the fire isnt just going to stop... metal may not burn, but hard drives arent all metal.
HeyItsMassacre Yeah and there's server rooms that when a fire is detected suck all of the oxygen out of the room to kill the fire.. Wouldn't want to get stuck in there.
8:55 Richard is Slick's brother?
btw I never knew that fire extinguishing technique and I find it rather dope
But can it run Crysis?
It was a joke xD
*****
Actually IT HAS A CPU, alas far too weak to run any game. It is a dual core ARM CPU at 1 Ghz with 512 megs of ram. And IIRC it doesn't even have graphics capabilities, instead it adds stuff like PCI-E, gigabit lan and whatnot.
***** you think that you can just power a bunch of hard drives and create a NAS?? lmao, everything that has an os has a cpu. Your nokia from 1999 had a cpu in it. . .
1:53 - The look of a madman.
Is there an app for the Note7?
B Roll really got some nice shots
I wish they had had the drives running. Oh well.
Dont know if they saw my comment or not but this is exactly what i suggested when they asked for suggestions. This is AWESOME.
I think they should've put it on top of the fire instead of next to it.
Mohammad Fouad What they did here is a more realistic situation though for a house fire.
Epic14Games You are right
One thing you should have done was had the NAS powered up during the fire until the point where they put the fire out. In a real world situation it would be on until the power was cut by the fire department or the adapter and NAS wiring failed, whichever occurred first. This was a demonstration that at least the box itself will protect against a fire and in most fires it would probably do fine even if it was on.
eeeh yes it might be fireproof but if the house start to burn the rof is probably going to fall down and crush the NAS :/
LMAO
Kaare Hansen yea but what if i have a 5 story concrete only house?? (roof is also concrete)
Kaare Hansen lol ye might
XybaZ swe if it was made just out of concrete it probably would not collapse in the first place
aottaz :P but "what if"
That's pretty awesome, it's good to see this in a real world situation. I was looking at getting an IOSafe for important stuff backup. I have a Synology 3615 with SE drives for data storage, but this would be a great back up for things that you don't want lost for life. WD Reds are a great recommendation, I cringe when ever I see people try to use eco drives, or worse..white label for a NAS.
Luke's nickname is slick? Hahahahahaha
+Dynamode Gaming used to be, yes.
now thats a fun video, i am a huge Linus fan(seeing his cheery mug is enough for me to subscribe to any youtube channel it just happens to be featured on) and this video proves that i am right. Do more torture videos Linus!
Just came here from Floatplane lol.
Holy throwback slick, that intro!
What if I drop my mixture on Tha nas?
I meant mixtape
joey serenko then those drive are going to be very wet
They call it the fire extinguisher
xxTandJ
the roasting is real
lol
Oh Linus, you show off! The quality is over 9000!!!
broo the camera doesn't "remember" where the area was touched or something it just stayed hot from his body temp.
nice touch with the music and fire
That slowmo bit was awesome
I honestly do not understand how somebody could dislike this video.
Wow amazing how it survived.
Overall it was fine, but there are two things I would have liked to have seen. First, they should have sprayed the NAS with water for a much longer time to make sure it was fully drenched. At least 10 minutes.
Second, I would have like to see a SMART readout of the drives after they were taken out. I know they don't recommend using the drives afterwards, but that would have been a nice touch.
2000 vids on this channel. Congrats man!
The question remains: How would it hold up if it was powered on? does it have power surge protection for when the power cable melts and causes a short?
Were not going to Fire this up! Get it Fire it Up Har Har Har! Best video I have seen from you guys. Fun experiment and great effort. Thanks Linus and Crew!
Very cool editing on the slow mo fire.
The epic music was just... epic!
and this is a proper 2000 video man. It was awesome
Amazing production, you really get good at those things!
We didn't understand the music that was playing in the background while the fire was burning - it's quite relaxing - what is it called?
You could do that, but Linus didn't. In the vid both drives were tested together at the same time. And if it was RAID1 maybe only one of them was broken, but you might not know about it until the other one conks out as well. At least that's how I think it works. And because the fire was only on one side it'd be nice to know both drives survived, because in a real life situation the heating may be on both sides.
Cool hands on testing Linus.
Epic Fire+Slowmotion= Awesome!
